Urgent Appeal

Dear Friends,

We have an urgent appeal for a young student, named Jeremiah Lokol who lives on the border between Turkana and Pokot areas; one of the poorest parts of Kenya. I met him in September when I was on a food relief mission to the people in that area.

Jeremiah has just been accepted to the top school in the country and this has made my day with this news. But he needs tuition and school uniform costs in a matter of days (by the end of this month) so I am making an URGENT appeal to everyone.

Sadly, everything that Jeremiah's family had was stolen by their neighbours just around the time the parents were planing to sell some cows and goats to pay for his education. Some of you will know that in this area the people are pastoralists and they suffer from cattle raiding.

As the boy comes from a family of 9, it looks like his dream of attending the school which is located in Kikuyu town near Nairobi, might not become a reality. He might lose the chance of joining this great school and achieving his dream of becoming a pilot after finishing high school.

What we need to do is gather everyone's support to ensure he can go to school. He needs everyone's support to make this possible.

The fees and costs for term one are 24,943 Kenyan shillings ( $304 Canadian, $275 Australian, $292 US, 222 Euros, 187 GBP) There are additional costs of 6695 Kenyan shillings for school uniforms ( $81 Canadian, $74 Australian, $78 US, 60 Euros, 50 GBP and some modest amount for travelling to the school and making sure he has the other clothing and bedding he needs.

I am praying to God for someone to come forward and answer the prayers for this family and this boy.

Changing Lives

We continually monitor the work of this lady--Mama Linet since giving her start up funds to get a small business going. She is the one with the little girl, Linet; the one with a cleft palate.

Mama Linet's business is booming (according to her). She has rented one more room so she can use one for her business of selling charcoal and omena (small fish). She also sells cabbages to her friends and neighbors. I'm so glad she has been able to pay fees for her kids who are going to primary school.

With the little help we've given her, I am seeing a big sign of moving forward and lifting herself and her family out of poverty through small business.

Please continue to pray for her.

At the same time, continue to pray for the medical student Kipngeno. Kenya desperately needs young men and women who will study and train to become doctors. Kipngeno went back to school today with only 10% of all the fees he needs. We are trusting God for a breakthrough for him.

December Missions in Photos

Helping a young mother start her charcoal business so she can support her family.

She has her charcoal lined up for customers.

Everyone is eager to see what we have brought. We usually bring sweets for the kids.

This woman is showing me her crowded living quarters. There is no room for cooking inside.

She cooks for her 5 children outside where these stones are.

The main things I bring for the people are mosquito nets to protect them from malaria. I also bring blankets to keep them warm as their shelters are not adequate to keep out the wind and rain.

These are the makeshift shelters they live in. There are about 35 families here.

Someone is always in need of medical attention.

Even the smallest things can make a big difference to the health of the children. These people are too poor to buy even the cheapest of medicines.

I brought sweets too. Even the adults like these little treats.

The Missions of Hope also provided food relief on December 24, 2011. If you missed it please see my last post.

Christmas for the IDPs

Helllo,

I had a busy day going on a quick Christmas mission taking gifts to the IDP camp near where I live. I managed to secure some volunteers to help me out. I'm glad I could make it there before Christmas.

It is so sad to see the situation these people live it. Indeed it is so heartbreaking.

I want to tell you of the love these guys have for you after you gave them these gifts. They are so grateful for the gifts, especially at this time of year.

I wanted to get this report up before Christmas passed and to upload a new slideshow set to music in my language, Kipsigis.

Mama Linet

Hello friends,

I was able to meet Mama Linet on Wednesday of this week. Mama Linet, is of the Luo tribe, like President Obama in USA. She has been away a long time due to a death in the extended family.


I catch a ride to "Mama Linet's." It is too far to walk there.

I found her doing great and I was so glad to meet her again to see how the children are growing.

You might remember that little Linet is the girl who was losing weight and couldn't eat. She was wasting away but after receiving medical treatment she is doing much better.

Linet is getting more energy each day and she has started to play with the rest of the kids, and that is very good.

I have given Mama Linet some 'seed' money for her business. She is still thinking about her options for making money through small enterprise. I will be returning to see her again soon and to check on the children and her progress.

I am grateful for the support that you have extended to this family through prayer and financial gifts.

This Baby Needs Your Help

Hello friends,

For over a month now I have been coordinating efforts to save this little girl (on the right, in the pink) from losing more weight. She had been losing weight due to having wounds in her mouth. She could not eat, and she has lost most of her teeth. Some of her teeth had broken off and she had early dental issues. Her parents took so long to get her to hospital for one reason or another.

I met this little one and her mother in one of the medical camps that we held at the slums. Her mother brought her and she was weak and emaciated. She had been unable to eat for days and had wounds all over her mouth. I took her to one hospital and helped her for about a month with her medical needs.

This is the slum area. When you live in poverty with little water, food or sanitation, it is hard to stay healthy.

This week was a success for me. The little girl (in the pink) is able to walk, run and smile. She is able to eat! This is miraculous.

It will take awhile yet for the child's blood count to strengthen before she can get surgery. She will also need special teeth to help her eat. The mama is so happy to have help for her little girl.

What we need: prayer and a possible donor for mouth reconstruction surgery and artificial teeth. The long brown elongated one's (teeth) will be removed. Also, food to keep her healthy...in terms of milk & school. That is a lot we know, but God can talk through other people. Pray for this girl. She seems so bright. She draws with very little teaching from any quarter.

Last Update From Turkana

Hello friends,

This is my last update about the Turkana relief effort.

We had a great time in Turkana serving the people there with our love and gifts.

In total we distributed 90,000 kg of corn/maize and 20,000 kg of beans.

We are so much grateful to God for making this possible.

Today we visited AGC Lokichar Secondary School. This school gave us lots of hope because it is doing so well. It is the best performing school in Turkana, and yet it is also situated in a famine stricken area. This brought a lot of hope for us as we left the land of Turkana.

Keep praying for this school.

Several of their students were "A" students last year and yet they don't even have a functioning lab or even some of the other amenities.

Hello,

Thank you so much for following our updates from here in Turkana country in northern Kenya where we are bringing much needed food relief to the people.

The vehicle gets stuck in the fine sand.

There are many people gathered for the food distribution. There are lots of children in the group.

I am so glad that you are praying for us.

Tomorrow will be our last day to visit this place and distribute the food before returning home.

The women and girls adorn themselves with many necklaces.

I'm holding one of the stools that Turkana men carry. They use it to sit on or to put their head on when they go to sleep.

Tonight it is so hot here that I am contemplating whether to sleep inside or
outside the house where I am staying.

Some of our team members who are mostly university students have opted to sleep in the open. Thank God there is a moon to show the way.

Otherwise enjoy the pics and continue to pray for our work and our journey.

This is the dirty water that the Turkana people have to drink. We have brought them some water but they really need good clean water. How wonderful it would be if they had a proper well.

Relief Effort to Northern Kenya

Hello friends,

This morning, along with other partners, Missions of Hope was able to flag off 5 lorries (large transport trucks) full of supplies to be taken to the northern parts of Kenya.

It is such a joy to see that our dear ones in the north are going to get support in terms of much needed food and water.

Please pray with us as we journey to this part of Kenya where the people have great need of everything.

Along our journey we managed as well to visit the Kerio Valley where we had a great look out over the valley. What a sizzling look we had.

Food Relief in the Horn of Africa

As you might have read in the leading newspapers, there is a very bad drought in northern Kenya, in Somalia and Ethiopia. Christians here and several organizations have decided to do something about it and I got involved too. (You can click on any of the photos to enlarge).

In the pictures you can see that we visited and took food relief to the Maasai people and the Somalians providing much needed water and other supplies.

I think we have got to do something. At least
visit these people and give what we have.

Going there is not easy but we have to try to make a difference at least.

I will be travelling there again. Maybe next week.

Kigen Goes Home

Hello friends, I want to tell you that the little boy we were helping from Pokot country in the north of Marigat has now been released from Moi Hospital. Some of you know I went to Pokot country on a relief mission because the people were very hungry. Their hunger led to fighting in one place. When I heard about that I wanted to do something to help.

Kigen can now see out of one eye. Praise God!

My post was called "Heart for the Pokot". While there with my friend and with assistance of an NGO from Kericho, I met the little boy and his mother Paulina. We prayed for them because it was clear there was something very wrong with the children. You can see what I mean in the photos below. After that we raised some money to bring the boy to a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. The children had something very wrong with their skin and the boy, Kigen could not see. Both of his eyes were closed shut.

The family has been a long time now in Eldoret but they are now finally going home. They have all gotten healthier looking. The boy, Kigen can now see out of one eye because the doctors did surgery. He has been recovering and the hospital has been ready for some weeks now to release them. We had to wait until we could get some funds to take them back to their village. It took us awhile to clear the bill with the hospital but now that is done. The family is happy to go home at last. I am happy that this mission is completed.

We could not have done it without friends. Those who gave and those who prayed. I thank you all. God knows who you are and he will reward you.

My next mission will be trying to get help for the young man named Kipngeno. He needs a sponsor to help him go to university. He will study in the health field. You can read about him on my Priorities page (see menu at the top). If you know of where we might get a sponsor for him, please let me know. We hope he can start the term in late August as he has already been accepted at Kisii University.

Kalenjin Culture Dictates Burial Rites

Hello,

We lost my uncle (although we refer to him as grandfather most of the time because he is the oldest of the generation of our grandfathers).

Many people really admired him as he was a very strong Christian and never engaged himself in fights. He lived in harmony with everyone.

In Kalenjin culture, a place for my uncle's burial is usually the prerogative of the clan to decide. Uncle married two wives and one of the wives died a long time ago. So he was staying with the wife who is called his second wife whom he married in the 1950's. He stayed with her for most of his working life and through his illness.

The second wife is also the younger wife and because he was living with her there was no need to keep a second home for the first wife since no one would be living in it. Kalenjin culture does not allow a man to be buried near the house of the younger wife so we had to build a house quickly so that he could be buried next to his first wife.

This was a learning lesson for us as we had never witnessed this before. We learned a lot though what was of interest for me is to see what the Bible says and how far culture can be changed by it. I did learn my lessons though and am weighing the pros and cons of this culture (cultural practises).

My uncle has been laid to rest and we are now are now comforted.

Mombasa and Naivasha Travels

I had a great time over the last two weeks resting and attending conferences in Mombasa off Kenya's coast, and in Naivasha in the interior. This is an annual conference that I've been fortunate enough to attend a few times because I've been blessed enough to get a scholarship to cover the cost of hotel, food and conference fees.

It was such a great time staying in Mombasa and having some time to swim. I really loved doing that.

I also had a great visit to the island in Naivasha, where they have what they call a walking safari. Whenever I'm on conference some newcomers to Kenya will invite me to show them on a safari. This one was a short safari.

Wildebeests, giraffes and many animals were at close range.

I really loved it there. It was a refreshing time for me. Now it is back to my studies and my missions work.

One Boy's Fight for Survival, March 30, 2011

Hello friends,

I am writing from the City of Eldoret now. It has been a while since i updated you on Kigen's progress.

I don't have good news yet. What the doctors have been doing so far is cleaning the boy, and his brother together. The kids are very clean. But they are yet to come up with the best medication [treatment] they had promised.

I was able to talk to the person in charge of the ward and he told me they are waiting for the report of doctor in charge of plastic surgery . A 'lady' of Indian origin, she has refused to give up on Kigen, which warms our heart so much. She was the one who admitted to us also and she had given a hint of some surgery, but she was waiting the report of the other doctors. What I found out though is that, they are taking the utmost care not to do something that will worsen the situation.

I do believe though that finally he will be able to get some help. Some of the wounds have healed and i found him moving and eating. I am just hoping that he will be able to get better someday.

Kigen Update, March 13, 2011

Kigen is doing better. I went to see him in the hospital today. He was asleep most of time I was there. His mom told me that he was better and he is getting some ointment for the wounds and some medication for his ears and eyes.

The younger child Tikitiki, is doing much better too. He can now see and they look very clean. Praise God. The mother has also been able to make friends.

We thank God for the doctors who were able to give the two boys one bed to stay in together as a family. Initially, they were given different wards because of the age difference. In this hospital, people are sharing beds because there are so many who are sick now, and there are limited spaces to put them.

Another update is that Kigen has received blood into his system. The skin specialist has been booked for tomorrow (Monday) and Wednesday is the surgery day. Just note that things can change without notice here in Africa so we will update you when the actual surgery and skin study is completed.

Nonetheless we praise God for keeping this family well. The mother left behind a sucking child in the village where they live so we are just glad she is here though she had some pain in her breasts earlier this week.

Continue praying for us all as we live here in Eldoret.

Emmy Launchs New Album in Eldoret

My time in Eldoret is mostly going to the hospital concerning little Kigen's care, and back to my hotel. But I had a change in routine this Sunday,

After a visit to church then to the hospital, I was happy to visit the launch of a new album by Emmy Kosgei. Emmy is a renowned gospel artist in the country of Kenya though she sings mostly in the Kalenjin language.

I was happy to see her father the Rev. Jackson Kosgei, who has been in a wheelchair since he was young because he had polio. He thanked his wife for accepting to marry him, the way he was, and now his kids are making him even more popular.

He himself is a great speaker and very knowledgeable speaker. He is now pursuing his Ph.D studies even though he started Grade one when he was 21 years old!

I have been able to make friends in Eldoret and it is a great place to be. Enjoy the pictures of the launch.

Blessings for Kigen

We arrived in Eldoret, Kenya with little Kigen's family and went straight away to the hospital.

I take a photo to commemorate this trip.

I just want to praise God for His faithfulness. My heart is now 'free'. I can now eat a bit as I know Kigen is in the doctor's hands and in God's hands as well.

This bag was donated to Kigen's mother on the streets of Eldoret.

I also want to thank God for the bag that was donated (blue one in photo) by people in the streets of Eldoret. We had realized that Kigen's mother came on the journey with an old bag, so we decided to buy her a new one. Instead, it was given to us for free! In addition, close to 500 Kenyan shillings was donated right there on the streets for this boy and his mum. God really works wonders.

It was a more touching moment for me as I felt God was telling me "I will take care of this situation" and I felt really that I am just a tool/ instrument to be used for God's purpose. The doctors too were so kind. We did not even queue! [If you know Africa, you know what this means]. We were welcome everywhere we went and I must praise God for that.

What is next now is that Kigen was given a dressing up by the doctors and is awaiting surgery (if I understood what they said well). He will need three practitioners or doctors to be able to treat him. First will be the one's to deal with the skin (there is a scientific name for it), those to deal with eyes, and another part, I forget but I guess general health.

The doctors here were so much touched too with the amount of courage the boy has. They were saying that they are seeing for the first time, something they were just reading in the books when they were in medical school.

The boy Kigen is upbeat, and he raises our hopes for his health. His younger brother too is here with us. He was not feeling well, too. So he is here for check up; especially for his eyes. He kept asking for him [his older brother Kigen] when they were with different practitioners.

We did mention to him [Kigen] of the many people praying and supporting him for his medical needs. He said, he is so much grateful and "TOROROT (Pokot for "God Bless you abundantly".)

Heart for the Pokot

Hello friends,

I'd like to share with you a small update on my travels to Baringo and Pokot country here in Kenya. I went there to distribute food supplies to people who have been hit hard by drought.

People gather and await the food distribution.

The women are especially excited.

It's hot here. Water is very precious in this dry climate as it is very scarce.

The team and I had a great trip and loved everything that we did there for the people. We would like to thank the US government for donating the relief supplies for us to take to the people and also for their relief work to assist many other people here in Kenya. We are so much touched by their generosity.

We travelled by day and night to get to our destinations and we arrived safely. The land rover we travelled in is over 20 years old. We were able to make it to these places though the land rover did have a lot of heating problems....with the engine. We would have to stop after a few hours of travel along our journey.

Along the way, in a place near Kamurio, we met this small boy named Kigen. He is 9 years old and in serious need of medical help.

The little boy we want to help is covered by the blanket. We prayed for him and his mother and siblings.

Hello friends,

I have been out in Marigat, Kenya distributing food to the less fortunate in our society. These pictures that you see of the Marigat area, should make you to feel better off and blessed where you are.

Please continue to pray for rain in this part of Kenya.

We are also pleading that you help these people establish a small church for their members.

In the last two pictures you can see Thomas and I standing on what is supposed to be a shelter. But it is a church for these guys.

On Sunday the 16th of January 2011, we had the inauguration of our 5th bishop of the Africa Gospel Church. The name of that person is Reverend Dr. Robert Langat. Not only is he an astute scholar, but a great preacher as well.

Reverend Dr. Langat was the Provost of Kabarak University before he accepted the position of the Bishop of the Africa Gospel Church. He is blessed with three children and a great wife.

I hope you enjoy the photos of that special day when Reverend Dr. Langat was installed as our new bishop. The installation ceremony was held on the grounds of the Kenya Highlands Evangelical University in Kericho, Kenya.

It has been a while since I updated my blog. Here is a little of what I've been doing recently.

In early December, I was able to visit the borehole that we drilled three months ago near Marigat. I am still waiting to see if we can get a pump that will help us in getting this water to people so they can use it.

The borehole is a prominent reminder that water exists here in this dry and arid place. It is just waiting to be pumped to the people of the area who are spread out over a vast area.

This water project is near and dear to my heart.

Please continue to think about this project.

I was also able to visit the Lake Bogoria National Park which is located a close distance to where the borehole is located. I loved it! The Soi Resort is also close by and is situated on the banks of Lake Baringo. There are many things to do here, including taking a guided boat trip to view the local wildlife.

The Lake Bogoria Spa Resort is also close by and is a few minutes drive from the Lake Bogoria National Park.

A local woman sits by one of the geyers at the lake. The water is extremely hot and many tourists boil eggs in it while they take in the sights.

Local wildlife can be seen in the park.

Just imagine that you can visit all these great places in a span of a half hour or less from the water point! You need to come and visit with us and see these sites for yourself.

Hello friends,

We still have many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kenya. I am just hoping this will be a thing of the past soon, but the challenges are still there for all to see.

It is foggy as we head into the Mau Forest IDP camp.

I guess we need a marshal plan to end this kind of disaster.

Team leaders gather and speak to the people.

There are over 4000 people in this camp. They need a permanent solution soonest. Please pray for them.

Every face in this next series of photos tells a story of the hardships these people face.

Look how frightened and uncertain this young girl looks. Young children should be free from hunger, homelessness, illness and uncertainty. You can be a part of putting a smile back on this young girl's face by helping to ensure she gets all of these necessities of life.

This man has lived a long life. He should now be enjoying his later years with dignity and certainty of food and housing. Just think about how he feels about now being landless and unable to work and provide for himself and his loved ones.

In this entire crowd of mostly women you can see the hardships of life etched on every face. Some of these women are young and some are old but they are all living a very hard life with few people to care about what happens to them.

Hardship is written on his countenance.

Continue to support us as we meet the needs of these dear ones as we did this week. We had a lot of contributions from the doctors and VCT counsellors who helped us in providing medical services and testing the folks here.

Hospital help with doctors and medicines was a huge part of the day's help for the IDPs.

What a challenge it was! Especially driving on the roads. But we did really love this great work of service to help the Mau IDPs.

The roads are really difficult to traverse. There is thick mud everywhere. You need a really good four wheel drive.
