Leith Clark has been for the long time role model in many ways for teenage girls and those little bit older. This dreamy-minded girl, founder of our beloved publication Lula (we are so sad the 17th issue was the last one) has the perfect sense of style and strong voice of young, successful and determined woman who at the same time loves frocks that look like cupcakes. I do believe what you think reflects your style in many ways and always has been interesting to see how her feminist thoughts reflect her juvenile style.

These days Leith’s thoughts were about the vision of a world through spectacles and she did a collaboration with Warby Parker, opticians whose philosophy is to create boutique-quality, classically crafted eyewear at a revolutionary price point. Inspired by smart-looking and smart-thinking individualists (like Zoe Kazan who models for lookbook), 1960s, librarians, nerdy girls, five models Marva, Greta, Aurora, Wednesday, and Willow come in both optical and sunwear.

Leith likes glasses we had when we were kids—or that our dad wore when we were kids—and wearing them now. She likes Bergman. Big thick glasses on a little, tiny face. When there are etchings or engravings or magically-made materials. She like pearls, brass, opera glasses. Everything being all violet. She like seeing the world with a pretty pink tint to it. Leith collaboration with Warby Parker just confirmed what we have known for a while now- somehow we just love to observe the world through Leith Clark’s point of view.

In the high competitive world of modeling, we get amazed by new faces we see every day but we will forget about these astonishing beauties soon as the new model pops in to win our heart. Of course there are those whose face we won’t forget so easily. Xinyuan Zhang is one of those girls.

Born in Hubei Province of China, she graduated from Central Academy of Drama in Beijing and became popular through social networks. Once being discovered, her face graced the cover of I-D Magazine and pages of many others. Not only she has a face of porcelain doll, but this young lady is very self-aware and through her modeling career has developed unique aesthetic vision and oriental wisdom saying no to vulgar photo shootings and editorials. And her personal style is all about collar dresses, exaggerated accessories, red lipstick and unique pieces of headwear. We love her even more once we found about that!

London Stories...Dalston Garden

Dalston Garden is one of those London charming secret little places that win your heart at first glance. I discovered it by accident, few weeks ago when garden hosted one of the Oxjam gigs. Utterly adorable performance of Cat Meat (followed by The Black Fields and The Midnight Barbers) by the light of pumpkin candles and cup of dark chocolate with rum created such a surreal atmosphere. Well, soon as you step from not so pretty Dalston railway station to this loveliness, you feel like you are flying on the cloud of some imaginary world. Not to mention that pizza I tried that night was on one the best I’ve ever had in my life. (Of course made of ingredients that are growing in the garden.)

The Garden has been created in 2010 on the old Eastern Curve railway line. The architectural collective Exyzt built a spacious wooden garden pavilion for events, workshops and gatherings. A super cool thing about garden is that anyone can take part in maintenance of this super cool world, especially keen gardeners. Sounds perfect for all those plant lovers living on concrete without their own piece own piece of land.

We talked about Orla Kiely AW13 back in the March, after she left us breathless with quirky presentation where bunch of gorgeous models/ secretaries were walking around the office and typing on neat retro typewriters in style of the Mad Men. Collection inspired by gypsy royal princess from 1970s, Margot Tenenbaum and Irish artist Breon O’Casey, is one of our favorite collections coming from Orla Kiely’s factory of mod.

Misslikey is crushing this season on: The fitted rosy pinafore in “Raised Flower’ design with silky floral appliques, Angora rosy top that is slightly cropped and fitted , Silk black organza blouse and thick but extremely soft faux fur coat. And do I have to mention all the knitwear pieces adorned with squirrels?

Tell me if there is something better to do on Sundays than to flip through our favorite papers that are delightful like a piece of candy? Today misslikey was hanging with current issues of Lula and Oh Comely and she took some photographs for you as well in case you didn’t see them yet.

Lula Magazine as usual is like a fairytale, full of dainty stories. For the issue seventeen, the clever mind of Leith Clark and associates Clare Shilland, Damon Heath, Davina Catt, Valentine Fillol-Cordier, Kristina Golightly, Pamela Hanson, Jessie Lily Adams and many others brought us amazing selection of interviews and enchanting fashion fairytales. Adieu Deborah Turbeville!

I don’t like mourning. Nor the news of blues. The death or illnesses are not dreamy at all in reality. But they are part of this petite world we know. We just cannot avoid them, I guess. We rarely talk about these kinds of things here. Therefore, misslikey is so sad to share among the others the tragic news that Deborah Turbeville, one of the most influential female photographers passed away of lung cancer on Thursday in Manhattan. She was 76.

Deborah started her fashion career at the end of the 1950s as a fit model for Claire McCardell in New York. After working for mentioned designer as an assistant, she had a decade long career as editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle. Inspired by avant-garde cinema and influenced by great photographers of her time whom she worked with, Deborah at Mademoiselle started to photograph her own sittings. At the beginning of 1970s she fearlessly decided to pursue career as a freelance photographer. As a self- taught she didn’t really understand photography techniques but she knew she likes soft focus and grainy films. From the thing that most of “professional photographers” would name as a mistake, such as models out of focus or scratches she created a really unique and dreamy photography style. ‘The imperfections in my pictures were the things people found charming’, she said in one interview.

With this kind of aesthetic where images are more oriented on characters, story and interior than to product is hard to survive in the commercial world of fashion but Deborah somehow managed by staying faithful to imaginary world she was creating with her lenses.

Filmmakers like Jean Cocteau, Jean Renoir, Alain Resnais and Andrej Tarkovsky and vibe of lost aristocracy influenced surreal world of Deborah Turbeville. She never called herself a fashion photographer, or neither photographer nor she was taking fashion seriously like most people in the industry do. Nevertheless, she created one of the most important fashion images. She had a special ability to create a connection with the models she was photographing which were often in groups and as a female she tended to capture inner spirits of females and their femininity that on her photos would become deep, opaque and mysterious. Now that new generations will remember her mostly because of beautiful and surrealistic spread in Vogue Italia featuring enchanting Valentino Haute Couture, Vogue readers from 1970s would remember her spread Bathhause that caused lots of controversy back in the days and she became embroiled in a debate about the morality of fashion imagery. October 24th will be remembered in the world of fashion as the day when vogue society lost one of the visionaries that were portraying fashion in another dimension by not showcasing fashion itself.

If you haven’t heard already about French singer and songwriter Petite Meller (which is offence per se) now it’s the right time for a proper introduction. The girl with a sweet voice and pink cheeks recently came out with a new video for her newest single Backpack that was filmed around the village Garabit, the summer residence of Matisse and Picasso. The video for the single is kind of homage to Petite’s childhood days spent on French Riviera where she as a child was giggling at all old madams and gentlemen in tacky bathing suits. Therefore the talented team responsible for the video together with Petite tried to capture her juvenile memories through the lens of the 1960s masters Truffaut and Godard.

Petite Meller is one of those French girls that with her beauty a la Brigitte Bardot and charm of Mia Farrow could easily fit in the days of Nouvelle Vague cinema. Actually Petite reminds a lot of Mia in a curly hair days. Besides we could look at her for ages, we could easily listen to her easy jazzy melodies all day long with carefree breeze somewhere by the pool.

Jauntiness, prettiness, pools and châteaux are really misslikey’s thing so that’s the reason why Backpack deserves total respect here. Talented London-based stylist Nao Koyabu did an amazing job with the styling of Petite Meller and models. With the girly dresses, striped little things that remind of lingerie, Victorian nightgowns and lovely boater hats, swimsuits designed specially for the video by Vin + Omi and swim caps in 1930s style, she recreated aura of French Riviera in the 1960s. And yes we are totally jealous how that pinkish coat and Simone Rocha plastic heel brogues look on Petite!

Sweet details are something that is not usually familiar with the Gothic mood. Since we like unusual, we love to add a little of sweet and simple to our dark moods. This Saturday yours truly went for East London exploring mission together with my new dear friend Linda, talented stylist and photographer that also writes amazing Alice in Wonderland blog. After Columbia Road where I almost fainted when I saw Ryantown, shop of my favorite collage artist Rob Ryan, the road and Linda took us to Brick Lane, the heaven of hip and vintage. On the first glance, as soon as I stepped into This Shop Rocks store I knew I would adore this place. Two floors of the shop are full of all kind of vintage things from home décor, toys, books and postcards to delicate clothing pieces. The friendly couple (maybe) that works there look like from some aged novel and place has such a nice unpretentious and serene aura.

Linda bought herself vintage silky nightdress in pale pink trimmed with nice delicate lace and I fell for adorable cake tins that are all over the place but since I have one suitcase I don’t allow myself any décor till I find a permanent place. However, I’ll be visiting this place often!

Emily Winfield Martin is amazingly talented illustrator and painter based in Portland, which really seems to be today’s mecca of prettiness full of creative folks that we thanks to this huge virtual world discover on daily base. Therefore, I was happy from the moment I discovered one of Emily Winfield’s illustrations that featured a girl wearing a striped top and Mary Janes and riding on carousel surrounded by ducks and other dear animals. From an early age Miss Winfield had a quite picturesque imagination therefore as a little girl she was spending every moment drawing, reading, dressing rabbits in fancy clothes, and having many peculiar daydreams.
Besides she is known worldwide and her works have been published in many magazines, she is the author and illustrator of an illustrated novel for children Oddfellow's Orphanage and a paper doll epic called The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer. Her illustrations are like little secret doors to another vivid world where magical prettiness lives. And we adore secret worlds like this one of Miss Winfield. It’s good that she lends us a key for this door so we can enter into this imaginary and picturesque world.

Over the years, we have been testifying arise of the enormous number of handmade labels that were born in sleepless nights from one creative mind and sewing machine with the intention of creating proper garments that are ready to wear. There are really many of those who we unpretentiously admire, and the one that is at the top of my "women in making proper garments" admiration list is Nadia Izruna, brain and seamstress behind label Nadinoo. Her proper dresses wrap body in pretty silhouette and every collar, cuff or any ending always appears to be perfectly tidy and neat. Nadinoo had taken the short break lately because Nadia became a mother to cutest little girl named Lula and family together with sewing equipment is based in Cape Town these days. There, from its place under the sun, Nadinoo comes back again with a new playful collection named Play by numbers, inspired by a wet and miserable English summer and school girls who care about life that is full of fun. The fun is surely guaranteed when you are wrapped in a comfy Liberty Tana Lawn that Nadia has been working with the last couple of years. And we come to the conclusion that from all those that are playing the Liberty game, she is the one that does it excellent.

I spent most of my August days in Dubrovnik. This is the city that won my heart with breathtaking architecture and unexpected adventures that appear around every corner. Like an old graceful lady it will keep one safe among the city walls while palaces and buildings will whisper the stories of the past. In this city you just can be either annoyed by colonies of tourists that believe they are in Game of Thrones set or you can stay speechless after observing all those wonderful architectural and botanical surprises (in this city plants and tress literally grow from nowhere) or being observed by hundreds of cats marching through the city like some old keepers of bygone times.

back to school dress

Now that leaves will soon begin to fall, in the upcoming days when our nudity will be covered with clothes, we are going to replace our canvas totes with leather satchels, light shoes with those made of heavier material and all those tiny high-waisted shorts with trousers. This transition from our ice-cream-looking clothes to those serious autumnal pieces can be horrible and frustrating sometimes.

Girls that wear dresses eventually have to put on the trousers from time to time, but just for a while we are going to put all those plaid and denim trousers in delay. The reason for that is this check dress in popular Angel cut coming from lovely The Whitepepper, which is perfect for beginning of our school days. Wearing this preppy check-patterned fabric we will be taken seriously in a cool way, while smock shape and purple checks will work for our charm and loveliness.

Dearest readers and fellow bloggers,

I spent few last days rambling through various flatshare webites and contacting friends and friends of the friends via facebook trying to organize my living in London. I want to thank all the wonderful and friendly people helping with advices. I am flying to London by the end of this September. I will be there for at least two months to attend course at Central Saint Martins.

Therefore I am looking for the room from beginning of October. If you know maybe someone who needs a roommate or you need a roommate, please let me know, via comments or my email (ninablace@gmail.com)

I am friendly, responsible and easygoing fashion writer looking for a room in East London area in a flatshare or house with normal, cool roommates. My only needs are bed to sleep and meditate, wifi if possible and tiny desk for writing. I am going to be in London for at least two months, but who knows maybe I’ll stay longer.

days of summer were different this time... really peculiar. i was saddened more than once. i detested possessions and human’s obsession with it more than ever. i felt determined, grown up and naively juvenile at the same time.

my june and july wouldn't be survived if it wasn’t for one blonde boy. through our coffee times i laughed like foolish kid in luna park. we invented humor that was bitter and delightful, innocent and evil. my summer, summer spent working in mine is lost but it was too kind to give a friendship to cherish for the rest of my life. misslikey was forgotten. it was work, work and sleep with some gems of laugh and wisdom that I found in between. no spare time. no muse to take me to my cloud. lost identity, I guess. after all these years of living on blogger, i really started to believe i suffer from bipolar disorder. there is always this made-up misslikey who appears to be my fantasy second half (could be entitled ego also, I suppose). when I feel like a dreamer misslikey has a wisdom. when I feel like a phantom, misslikey flirts witty with life.

when august came, came along the freedom as well. i would love that I am relaxed type of person, but I am not. moi wanted to be a mermaid and get lost somewhere where one can bathe among the stars. misslikey, au contraire, decided to throw us in the service of cheap liquor and summer playing. therefore, we visited terraneo festival one more time. misslikey is too fond of cool cool breeze, liquor and dirty knees. my photographer was on the mission just on the first day. the next two days liquor took away my common sense and I just couldn't mislay those poetry and Père Lachaise talks because of camera and pen. it was dirty knees, chewing gums on my lingerie and dresses made of gingham and beads. we don't have photos or words to describe that. and it's misslikey's fault, not mine.

The Loved Hannah

In the sea of hip kids we see around every day, there are not many of those who can actually surprise us pleasantly every time they do something new. Among the ladies we love to see around the internet is Hannah Metz, brilliantly creative mind that with her lifestyle recreates the sensuality of some bygone times. Hannah is also one-half of the duo behind vintage store and lingerie brand The Loved One.

The Loved One lingerie pieces created together by Hannah and Elvia Lahman are here to bring an air of lost indulgence into our modern lives, while their vintage stock has been a place for finding secret gems coming from beginning of the century and the mod era. The recent novelty from The Loved One is new in-house clothing line named Made by TLO and instead of old big cartel shop, label has launched online shop where they except of their own designs, still sell amazing vintage pieces and some independent labels. Actually, in the future TLO has a plan of surprising us with more pieces from independent designers which is always good news for misslikey. This latest photo shoot Hannah did for TLO came as an inspiration for these days when you can sense the different air that with blues announces that summer will slowly disappear and will guide us to autumnal days. Let's just hope that rain that comes to our paths would be tender and that winds would play carefully with our handsome frocks. The air might be cool in autumn days, but our hearts are always bright as a dainty summer day.

Bonjour Terraneo!

Dearest missliketes, since the summer and beloved August are reserved for fun, joy and festivals, I’d like to share with you one of my favourite summer festivals. Charming Terraneo is located in my lovely hometown Sibenik that has a soul of an old poet and the prettiest sunsets ever seen. For misslikey these past two years Terraneo has been the place of divine music experience.

First year in my spotlight were amazing The Raveonettes and gorgeous Sharin Foo who looked absolutely magnificent in front of the full moon, wearing capelet and platinum bob. This was total Nouvelle Vague-Blondie moment in the first row. And yes, I screamed. My divine moment, on the other hand, at Terraneo festival happened last year during The xx gig. I have to say I was in heaven even hours after seeing, listening and feeling these angels in black. Not to mention that over past years I also experienced even my stalking moment at Terraneo. Yes, I stalk. Well, sometimes. And I certainly cannot resist it when it comes to pretty drummers and bands like The Vaccines. When I spotted last year drummer Pete Robertson in Terraneo crowd with a voice of crazy fan I announced it to my friend. Any yes he was thrilled to join me in my stalking. And enough crazy to yell at him. Even if we were acting like couple of lunatics, dear Pete was pretty polite. Well, celebrities understand we are all lunatics sometimes better than anyone. So this year, with a cool cool breeze and dirty knees (as The Vaccines would say) I will enjoy Calexico and be in delirium with My Bloody Valentine. Maybe I will even jump with Prodigy. All this in pretty clothes, of course.

August with Family Affairs

When you become aware that the summer is soon forgotten, I can tell you that you woke up in August . Isn’t the truth that when there is a little left of sunrays, you wish to catch them with palms of your hands. Therefore, don’t wait. Catch a beauty of charming A. with blossoms opened to peace and magic that August moons spread.

In the days of August we will drink lemonade with clean minds and warm hearts. Even if we don’t have our soul mates or beloved ones, we would wish that we could get lost to someplace near the sea where birds would wake us up. Then we would truly enjoy sunrises and sunsets that welcome and farewell these charming days.

In sweet Sextilis we would pick lavender and collect rose petals. In the satin boxes we would carefully put them for a scent that will bring delight to our autumns and winters.

In dear August we would make sorbets, drive in boats and wear a pretty pretty clothes. We would play, sing and look alluring with floral wreaths wrapped in our hairs.

Piece of Furniture...Love Seat

When I think about my own future home (this thoughts usually go like this; “dear God, if you exist, you are my witness I deserve apartment at Notting Hill. With staircase. I don’t need anything too big. Something small. Well not too small. Think of Bridget Jones’s apartment! Please?!”) and furniture in it, Ercol loveseat will have the special spotlight in that imaginary place. This classic piece of furniture would fit perfectly into dining space of modern girlie apartment.The iconic love seat was designed in 1955 by Ercol founder Lucian Ercolani who based his range on British classic designs. Therefore loveseat was based on a double Windsor chair but lightened with pale timbers and slender tapered legs.
Today this gorgeous bench is hand crafted in Ercol’s Buckinghamshire factory and costs £700. Also version of Loveseat is available at The White Company (on the photograph) for the similar price and in natural and white tone. These versions are much more reasonable than vintage ones which are more pricier. It is same with reissue of loveseat that Ercol did in collaboration with designer Margaret Howell.

Love seat is still my imaginary perfect piece of furniture but well, who knows, maybe one day misslikey would be written from Ercol love seat. Isn’t that just brilliant dream?

Playful, Pretty and Print

After all those rains we thought that it might never come to us, but Miss Summer had decided that will slowly and elusively sneak into our lives. To have a spirit ready for a little summer playing, we are going to fight those irritating heat waves with friendly water and pleasant frozen drinks.

For those moments of play, many of us will become joyful with the help of charming prints this year. What you wear reflects on how you feel, smart people used to say and this season thanks to all those magnificent folks that are designing and making our clothes, we finally have from plenty to pick. As most appealing of the swimwear offered this season I choose dear Lauren Moffatt that last few years became synonym for the playful and pretty swimwear. Her summer 2013 collection is mind-blowing and the one-piece in the heart print is already a huge star. We must not forget our dear Orla Kiely and one-piece in her genius Poolside print. As well, be close to good old gingham. The cutest little top/corset from Steven Alan would be perfect together with good old A-line denim skirt. After all the playing in the sand, in this combination you will be ready for all those see sighting sunsets.

So, are we ready for the joys that Miss Summer will bring this year?! Oh, oui!

Beard, please!

To be honest with you dear misslikettes, misslikey always had a thing for boys with beards. That look of the gentleman that beard gives together with bit of edge that hair or skinny jeans create makes me to stop and look for a while. It is certainly possible that my attraction to boys with beards started with Iron and Wine or Fleet Foxes, and I know I can be bit of a music hypocrite sometimes for liking the bands with pretty people (read: made of boys with beards). So, yes we did had outstanding choice of bearded boys to listen over the years, but lately I am glad that beards had finally made their move from studios to modeling agencies. These days on the covers of magazines and in different editorials and lookbooks we can see beautiful examples of male specie wearing beards and tattoos. One of the boys we have honor of seeing a lot around is Ricki Hall, 26-year-old model that lives and works in London. Except of the promenade of his instagram fans worshiping his beard and numerous tattoos, Ricki won the heart of people from fashion industry. In fact his story of modeling is quite quirky as his appearance, since his 2-year-old career started when he visited London for a weekend and got scouted in front of Topman where he went to buy himself a t-shirt. What is special about Ricki beside of the tattoos and the beard is his perfect sense of style. He describes it as a fusion of 1950s New York workman with a nod towards 1930’s English gentleman and a sprinkle of the 1980s skinhead era. We couldn’t agree more and add that he embodies all these eras in perfect way. Good luck Mr. Hall, we are delightful to see you around.
