Come Back, Africa

My friend Celiwe sent this to me today. It's the trailer for the restored version of Lionel Rogosin's Come Back, Africa - a feature film released to the world in 1959/1960 about the life of black people during Apartheid in the 1950's. They've done a brilliant job on the restoration. I really can't wait to see this. The local re-release was meant to coincide with the ANC Centenary celebrations this month. If anybody knows when and where this will be screened in SA, please shed some light.

This is clearly my lucky week of discovering cool local blogs. This is the latest, a tumblr blog called I See A Different You. On the ''About'' section of the blog, it simply states: A trio collective from Soweto portraying South Africa as they see it''. I think two of them are brothers because their names are Justice Mukheli and Innocent Mukheli, the third person is Vuyo Mpantsha. Whoever you are, you take really beautiful photographs. The dimensions of my blog don't do the pics enough justice, you have to go to their site to see them properly.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE

This was the only thing I really wanted for Christmas. I didn't get it and was going to buy it for myself at the end of this month but I was visited by a little angel last week. My friend, Penelope is visiting from London and when we met for lunch last Sunday, she was carrying an unnecessarily big bag with a big box inside. When we sat down for lunch, she handed the faded green fabric bag with the box to me and said, here you go Mils, it's your Christmas present. She is a gift freak since I've known her so I knew it was going to be something special but not this special.

When I unwrapped the Christmas wrapping, I was assaulted by a bright gold shining light. The light of reason in my world. And three little words that made me very happy. Daisy. Marc. Jacobs. It's exactly what I wanted. Thank you my friend. I love you. As if that wasn't enough showering of love, she then proceeded with the following words: ''Ok Mils, now it's time to go down the list of reasons for why you are so awesome''. I said many a ''No please let's not''. But actually I was very happy that I have such a friend in my life.

The other day when I was feeling really shit about not being able to save the life of a dying baby bird that I found in Rosebank Mall, I bought the Elle Magazine because I just could not not with Michelle Williams looking amazing on the cover. But I failed to realise one crucial thing about the particular issue when I bought it: It was all about Valentines Day and Love kwatsha kwacima...and... People in Love and Love songs blah blah fish paste. So I prolonged opening it and instead spent the first 24 hours looking at the cover.

I am not in love and don't have a boyfriend so when I finally opened it, I was like...MMMM Let's go directly to the fashion. Boy was that a good move. I flipped open to this very shoot and voila, I was taken away on a magic bed of flowers and butterflies that made me forget all about my shoddy day. This is a really beautiful shoot. The concept, the fact that it's done in studio with amazing printed fabrics and of course, the clothing. I love this wall to wall flower trend. Well done to the lady responsible, Asanda Sizani who is Elle's Fashion Editor. Get the mag and go on the site to find out what happened behind the scenes. The butterflies are real by the way. One morning in November last year, I woke up and said out loud, I need to study something to do with business. Until now, I have pretty much winged it in the business department even though I co-own a fully fledged business. In high school, the guidance counselor advised me to drop maths, which I sucked at, and from the tender age of 13 when this happened, I have been running from any sort of numerical affiliations as well as have had a terrible self esteem when it came to anything arithmetic or that involved counting sums of things.

That very same morning, I was driving to work and listening to 702. I heard an advertisement calling for 10 000 young women in business to apply for a Scholarship Programme that was about educating women in business on Business Management. There was a number to Sms for more information. I smsed the number immediately and got a text back with the web address and the following information:

The 10,000 Women programme (www.10000women.org) is a five-year investment by Goldman Sachs to provide 10,000 underserved women around the world with a business and management education. In South Africa, 10,000 Women is managed and delivered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), the business school of the University of Pretoria.

The Goldman Sachs-GIBS 10,000 Women Certificate Programme for Women Entrepreneurs provides targeted support to growing small businesses through business and management training delivered by leading faculty and industry specialists, mentoring, business advisory services and access to networking opportunities.

Selection criteria for this opportunity:

· Women entrepreneurs who manage their own businesses in South Africa

· Minimum of a matric qualification

· Good understanding of English

· Business to have an annual turnover of R300,000 to R5million

· Business must be in operation for over a year

· Businesses that employ five or more people will be given preference

Naturally, I was like, OMG the Universe is heeding my call. And today I submitted my application form. When I handed it in, the person who I assume is administering this process told me that they are looking for more applicants and if I know anybody else whom this might benefit, I must let them know. So here you go ladies, especially people in the fashion industry. I'm not sure when the closing date is (it was today) but contact them and find out when you can submit an application.

MeMeMe Joburg and as of next week MeMeMe Cape Town are proud suppliers of this really beautiful jewellery by Elizabeth Bloom and her Dorus Mhor label. Elizabeth is an English woman married to a South African and she paid us a visit late last year with jewels in hand and we couldn't help ourselves - we bought all of these on the spot. She's back in the country, this time with new stuff that's going to be stocked at MeMeMe on Long Street from next week!

The jewellery is so well priced, the most expensive pieces are the necklaces which go for a mere R760, the earrings, and bracelets go from R250 to R550. And apparently, Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine, which we pump at both stores much to the annoyance of the shop assistance, is apparently one of Elizabeth's most supportive customers. Small world.

I recently bought my monthly issue of Marie Claire South Africa. I sat down to read it and enjoyed the Kate Moss cover, the cover story, the fashion stories and all the other usual stuff that MC gets right more than 95% of the time. It's one of the few local magazines I make a point to purchase each month because I feel the publication speaks the language of the modern gentlewoman.

However, I stopped. Semi- aghast in all senses of the word. Wondering what it is I was looking at when I saw the above beauty shoot which also showcases Prada's 2012 Resort Collection. After reading and contemplating, I showed my friends the shoot and asked them what they thought. One is an award winning artist. One a lecturer in Art. One a stylist and the other a photographer. I couldn't read their thoughts beyond their expressions of narrowed eyebrows, compressed eyelids and pursed lips.

There are some great elements in the shoot. Like the concept, some of the clothing and the lips in the first and fourth picture. The rest, I really don't think was executed well at all. The first and continuous thought while looking at the shoot was that it seemed like some non-black person wanted to see what all these amazing pops of colour look on a black person and just applied them for fun, as a test, as if playing dress up at home. Yes we know that bright colours look better on black skin, but in moderation. This otherwise beautiful model in these images looks like the cross between a golliwogg and a minstrel. Like no consideration was applied to whether black women could actually wear these looks and be taken seriously. Was it a display of the actual colours against a skin that would expose them the best? Because if it was, then they have done the colours justice. They are beautiful colours. But together, I believe they are offensive to the intelligence of anyone who would want to apply them together in this way.

Am I being too harsh? What are your thoughts?
