I feel like this song really resonates with much of what I've gone through these past few weeks. I haven't been around much because I was trapped in the midst of finals at school. Now it's over and I have 6 more months of college.

While in my world of academic isolation, I arrived at this philosophy: Thinking about life after college is the equivalent of wondering if "heaven has a ghetto."

There is so much that I could say here to further illustrate my point, but I hope you can take what you will from that particular statement. It's all about perception after all.

One night after endlessly surfing the web, I’m stopped dead in my tracks by a piece of artwork so beautiful I needed to share it with the world. That particular piece was Terence Nance’s teaser for his debut feature film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Nance’s film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, was recently selected to screen at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT this upcoming January. Nance so graciously agreed to interview with MissRiot.com and there is much to be said about such a talented soul.

Name: Terence Nance

Age: 29

Location: Brooklyn, NY I moved from Paris to Brooklyn in 2009. I lived Paris for 2 years. 2007-2009

Occupation: Artist / Co-founder and Creative Director at Media MVMT a film production company (media.mvmt.com) and Embassy MVMT an artist development company (embassy.mvmt.com)

Media MVMT is a production company that makes films, music videos, and a web-series called MOCADA TV. MoCADA is the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art, it’s in Brooklyn. We partnered with them to produce the series which profiles Artists, Cultural Organizations, and Businesses. The show aired locally in Brooklyn on BCAT and will be released on line in 2012.

We produce music videos as well (which I direct) for musicians: Pharoahe Monch, Blitz the Ambassador, L4 are a few we’ve worked with.

Also produced music for television shows. In 2012 our we are moving into producing more long-form content.

Where are you from originally? Moved? Where have you lived?

Dallas, TX- Born and Raised, Boston- Undergrad and NYU for Grad School. Paris France for 2 years after school was finished.

How did you find yourself in the business of making films?

I came to it very late. When I went to undergrad, I was a visual art major. I still consider myself an artist and not necessarily a film maker. This (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty) is my first feature film, I also make music (under the moniker Terence Etc) and work with other media. When I was in undergrad I went to South Africa for 9 months and I made a film called Exorcising Rejection and it was at that moment that I decided to work with cameras and editing in my work. (propelled into filmmaking as an extension of his artwork) The film was shot on a point and shoot camera and I impressed myself so that pushed me forward.

I first came across your work by watching the Teaser for your upcoming film. I’ve read that this film actually started off as a documentary of your own experience in dealing with love. What is the story behind that?

It was non-fiction but not documentary. I was re-enacting. It was my non-fiction. My truth. An incomplete truth.

I noticed you used Janelle Monae’s “57821” from the ArchAndroid album in teaser for An

Oversimplication of Her Beauty, Is Monae one of your favorite artists? Who are some of your favorite artists?

She is quite possibly my favorite artist. She inspires me generally as an artist to be unapologetically me and express myself from a place of confidence. She is at the Vangaurd of Black music (which by default places her at the vanguard of all music) and is truly pushing culture forward. Flying Lotus is dope, My Brothers Djore, Nelson, and Blitz the Ambassador are all musicians and are continually an inspiration to me. I really like Thundercats new album. King. Krystle Warren, Valerie June, Emily King, Michael Kiwanuka, Lianne La Havas. Son Lux, St. Vincent and The Stuyvesants thestuyvesants.com

What were your original intentions in making this film?

I started the film in school in 2006 and It was largely an impulse at first. I thought the film would be 5 minutes long I had no intentions or no how to make a feature film. I had a lot of omni – directional creative energy at the time, I was making t-shirts, and walking around the city with spray paint stenciling the word FLY everywhere. Around then I had what I thought was a complicated situation with a woman, that inspired me to write the film. So my original intentions probably amounted to some sort of need to consecrate or validate a dying romance.

But I took so long to make the film that I needed to formulate some new intentions to keep me going so. I was probably also attempting to depict an archetypal ambiguous romantic - ish relationship within the swarm. (people who are of color, culturally of color, in non-corporate occupational situation- for fulfillment as much as it is for compensation, not Goldman Sachs or Corporate Lawyers educated through college or found means to educate themselves, Not from the neighborhood but moved into it.)

At the end of the day the movie is about how I felt about her. On some level I do feel the film was Goddess worship. It’s a prayer to her.

I read that you actually casted the person of your affection as herself in the film. How did that play out for you when she discovered the film was about her?

I can’t really tell you that because it’s in the film.

The teaser painted a fairly intense picture of the reality of love and relationships. Since producing this film, has your outlook on love and relationships changed? How?

Well at the time I had a very concrete moral compass, Now I’m back and forth on the practicality of ALWAYS doing the right thing (morally) for everyone involved, maybe sometimes you should just do you. I’ve never actually tried that in the way that I’m talking about (doing me) so maybe it’s just that the grass is greener on the other side.

Knowing what you know now, would you do anything different?

Oh god yes, before I was the person who followed a fair amount of the rules and now I still am that person but I’ve become very self aware about how much less fun I’m having, or maybe how different my fun is.

What do you want a viewer to take away from An Oversimplification of Her Beauty?

I wouldn’t say I have any concrete desires for how I would want an audience to experience the film other than I want them to feel like they have seen something new, a new style, a new voice etc.

It would be nice if people walked away with a self-awareness about their own romantic relationships and an ability to look at love in a positive way even if it didn’t work out with the person. The film is a lot about remembering emotions or cultivating your emotional memory.

hopefully people walk away by feeling empowered by having loved.

I really want people to see dope art with black people in it that will engage all of their senses.

What advice do you have for other artists of color?

The first thing is learn your craft to competency but learn your voice to mastery. There is not as many people in our community as you would think who are technically proficient at the technical skill of making films, I honestly feel for artists of color we really need to focus on learning the tools of the trade and understanding them in a way that facilitates their optimal use. Learn how to light, learn how to compose, how to do a match on action cut, how to do a breakdown and schedule, etc. etc. it’s just a matter of increasing your vocabulary, you will construct better sentences the more words you know. As people of color I don’t think we can afford to Woody Allen / Kevin Smith the game and focus on the non – technical aspects of filmmaking because we don’t have the privilege of having an endless amount of technicians at our disposal, as Writers / Directors of color we need to be auteurs with a whole understanding of the process from script to screen. It's important that we work as a community, we can't get anywhere if we are all working unconscious of each other's work and resources. I am a co-founder of a filmmakers collective called Cinema Stereo (cinemastereo.org) and we are attempting to do just that. Collectivize as a means of elevating all of our work to more visible platforms.

That said.

Knowing how the camera works won’t get you far, once you are technically proficient you must posses your own entirely unique voice as an artist, and you must master that voice.

Second, make some art! Completing the work is often the most difficult thing. Additionally, you must complete work that firmly positions you as an artist with a voice as opposed to a technician making trivial entertainments or spectacles. We don’t live in a meritocracy in the world of media the person who arrives with the work first wins. I think a lot of great artists have a problem finishing things or finishing things consistently. Master your craft and voice through making art work and finishing a lot of it. Be prolific, If you build it the people will come. Not that I’m anyone to be making this challenge but I want to personally challenge anyone who is filmmaker to write and direct a feature film that is distinctly your voice, in the next 20 months. We can no longer say this is unrealistic. The next cultural frontier for people of color is filmmaking.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I hope to have 3 feature films under my belt. I have 2 screenplays that I hope to produce in the next 5 years. Additionally I want to produce a theatre piece on the Swarm. I want to continue to make art. I want to have the access to resources to be able to produce any project that comes to mind in a reasonable amount of time.

Describe your ideal girl.

They are all described in the movie.

But I guess my Ideal person is just dope, what they are doing with their life, their time, their energy is dope. They are prolific, ambitious, giving, knowledgeable, curious. They probably smell like some combination of sandalwood, Egyptian musk, coco butter, coconut oil, and maybe some lavender. They are responsible, emotionally healthy, physically healthy, and mentally healthy, they value their time and spend it wisely, they are doing what they love. They’re an artist, athletic / active, open, they can dance, they can sing, they are autodidactic, they are unflappable, independent, confident, CONFIDENT, aggressive, communal, they are growing and invested in their continual growth, they are secure in their hue, they are competitive in a healthy way, maternal, disciplined, determined. They’re probably one of those people who post pictures of Solange, and animated Gifs of the Pyramids at Giza on their Tumblr, or they’re in one of the pictures those people post. They eat to live, They are witty, quick of the mind, quick of the tounge, opinionated, progressive (politically), well informed, spontaneous, cultured in the way I was, centered, loyal,

As you all have probably know by now, I'm serious about my Halloween celebrations. This was look #2 of my RuPaul costume. The first was an elaborate pink, sparkle-y, vintage gown. It looked a bit too Barbie-like and as a result I was oogled by men old enough to be my grand-daddy. Someone even thought I was a pop star! See video below:

I made almost 50 cupcakes in the name of Halloween! I probably ate a good 10 of them. My good friend Rich dressed up as Frank the Bunny from Donnie Darko. We walked the streets of West Hollywood for the Costume Carnival last night and he took the show! What about Queen Ru?!

I'm already conjuring ideas for next year. I wish I could dress in Drag everyday!

This is Halloween

I just had to post shots from some of my favorite Halloween Movies. Halloween is my favorite holiday to celebrate. I can safely say that now that I'm no longer in elementary school where my classmates told me it was, "the devil's birthday." Kids psht.

American Apparel Flea Market

Me and my mate Edith from the U.K. have been taking advantage of the American Apparel Flea Market in downtown L.A. There was simply too much of a good deal there.

We arrived around 10:30AM on a Friday and the crowds were modest. We found parking relatively easy and went to work. Once inside, the first thing we noticed is the walls were lined with vintage finds; all of which were marked an additional 40% off. As you move closer inside the factory floor, you find your staples such as hoodies, v-necks, dresses, skirts, denim etc. Needless to say it was easy for one to get carried away. A live DJ set up provided music from Viva-Radio which was blasting the obscure indie as usual and bands such as Puro Instinct were scheduled to play during the evening.

The only bummer was the LONG lines. I recommend getting there early or else be prepared for a 45 minute-hour wait for checking out.

There were so many goodies! I wish I saw more micro-mesh though. Alas, I believe me and Edith shall be returning tomorrow because the event goes through Sunday. If you're in L.A., I would definitely take advantage of this awesome sale. It's the only one they've had in almost 3 years!

Culture Collide

Yesterday, I attended the Filter Magazine Culture Collide block party in Los Angeles. This was my second year attending and it's always a good time. Echo Park was taken over by bands and food trucks
and the crowd was pretty massive this time around.

My highlights would definitely be seeing CSS perform. The lead singer Lovefoxx is full of so much awesome energy and she explicitly let the crowd know how much the band loves In-N-Out (Who doesn't love the burger delivered from God himself?)

Now I have to retreat back to my cubby to continue to deal with this epic wisdom tooth pain I've had for over a month now. I can't chew on the right side of my mouth. Luckily I'm getting an extraction on Friday and I pray to Zeus it isn't painful... and that' I'm able to listen to my iPod during the procedure.

Alright as always I like to leave with a little ear candy. Here's my song choice of the moment. Super chill.

I will take my scoldings with dignity ya'll. I know it's been over a month but I had absolutely no laptop and I was getting settled into my last year of school! Graduation is here! Praise Aladdin and the King of Theives!

The beautiful leopard case I'm holding is from Target. I use it to carry my HP Touchpad.

I waited in line outside of Best Buy in the hot Houston heat to snag one when they clearanced them out at $99. It was worth it, especially since they were originally priced at $499.

Outside of boring geek stuff, I am working on my first directing project.. that I will complete (my 2008 documentary is on the backburner) I have been working on shot lists and a treatment that I hope to wrap in October. I can't wait to show ya'll!

Only God knows how much I've watched this video over the weekend! I truly admire Drew Barrymore's directing. The girl is crazy talented! Whip It was awesome (especially since it was set in Tejas!) What I really enjoyed in this video was of course the styling. The look of the Night Creepers gang was is very post-punk meets Rockabilly, a look I donned most of 2007. Take a look as Chloe Moretz of (500)Days of Summer shines as Veronica in the Night Creeper gang...Oh and that kid from Maid in Manhattan is in the video too.

These beautiful gems have been on my wishlist for the past few days and I must say that I'm truly intrigued. Jeffrey Campbell has done it again with the platform "Tardy" boots. Yes, they are very similar to the Chloe "Runway" Docs with a slightly better price tag.

It's that time of the year again! Everyone enjoys this nostalgic time when retailers try to push the idea of "Back to School" down your throat as you desperately cling on to the last bits of your short-lived summer. One day the stores are filled with American flags and the ideas of old-fashioned BBQ cook-outs and the next school supplies and lunchboxes line each aisle.

These days it seems like my cherished messenger bags and backpacks have bitten the dust. I ruined my vintage Eddie Bauer leather backpack at Coachella this year with sunscreen and pancake syrup. Needless to say I need a replacement.

I really want the Jeffrey Campbell Rizzler-2 backpack in purple/orange suede. However with a price tag of $200.....ehhhh

I've also had a keen eye out for the vintage Fossil re-issue leather pieces. They're very classic and seem pretty durable. However I wouldn't take them to Coachella. Never make the same mistake twice.

The printed canvas and baja backpacks prove to be a bit more in my price range. The Zumiez Baja backpacks are only $21.99. The Asos Aztec backpack is $77 but alas it's out of stock.

I just need something durable to store my laptop and notebook in yet stylish enough to carry as a purse because I will not carry both around on campus!

Makeover Makeover: DIY Jeffrey Campbell Tick Wedges

Sleeveless Pink Shirt- Vintage, Black Mesh Jumper- American Apparel, Cross Necklace- XXI, DIY platforms- Moi

So I bought these platform woven wedges last year on Santee Alley in DTLA for $25. They're featured in one of my older posts. I love the look of length they gave my legs and anything over 5inches is okay in my book as far as shoes go!

Needless to say however, I got tired of the 70s-inspired woven pattern on the sole quickly. I needed to do something to protect my investment. So DIY to the rescue!

Here's what you need:
Black Acylic Paint, Thumb tacks 900-1000 (Try Staples or Walmart or the Dollar Store) and Matte Black Spray Paint

Directions:

Paint over the woven sole with black acrylic paint (It looked super nice and I wore it just like this for a while.) It takes a couple of hours to dry so I'd recommend painting at night and continuing in the morning.
Stud the woven sole with the silver thumbtacks. (This can take you a few hours if you don't have cable. It could be weeks if you do!
Spray paint the gold metal buckles with matte spray paint to match the rest of the shoe. A couple of coats is best to prevent crackling paint.

VOILA! Enjoy your new Jeffrey Campbell- tick wedges for a fraction of the cost!

I've been absolutely obsessed with platforms as of late. My rule for summer has been no less than 5 inches. After all, a great pump can make your leg look long and lean.

Aside from the appearance factor, I've always loved platforms because they're the most comfortable and sturdy heels to wear. I came across the Report Signature "Bergen" heels in Macy's the other day and thought to myself, "Color-block platforms?!"

Had I $225.00 to spare, those babies would have been mine! ALL MINE! I just want to get all Rose Royce on these ohz. Is that too much to ask?

Unknown Mortal Orchestra- How Can U Luv Me

So Netflix finally decided to send me a film that didn't star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I swear ever since I LOVED (500) Days of Summer and Mysterious Skin they have sent me his whole body of work. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm sorry Netflix Manic was hardly a rom-com classic.

Anyway, I heard of the story long before I saw the trailer for the film Skin a while ago and decided to add it to my queue. The film is based on the true story of Sandra Laing, a black girl, born to white parents during the Apartheid in South Africa. The film goes into further detail on how genetics played a huge role in the phenomenon. The film follows Laing as she searches for an identity and sense of belonging in a society plagued with racial tension. Sophie Okonedo's performance is amazing in this role. This is definitely a film you need to see.

Sidenote: I wouldn't have minded if they gave Joseph Gordon-Levitt a small role in this film.

White Denim

I peruse the internet from time to time when I'm not using Netflix and come across a slew of crazy, sexy, cool new music. This band, White Denim is no different. This song reminds me of "Playground Love" by Air from The Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Simple melody but very enchanting.

Sidenote: I love the fact that the Senior Prom footage featured in the video is from the same year I was born. Go figure. Enjoy!

I'm back! Finals are over! Sorry for the hiatus! I'm ready to dive into summer! (Figuratively not Literally because we all know I can't swim.)

Maybe I'll learn how to swim this summer. I've unsuccessfully attempted to learn every year since I was 12 and you know what: This will be the year I learn how to swim! I will find someone who I can trust with the patience of Zeus...hopefully.

James Blake- Wilhem Scream
I discovered Mr. James Blake via my twitter follower Ali! I'm glad I did. James Blake is supposedly taking the dubstep world in a different direction. Too bad he sold out both of his L.A. shows!

Alright I owe ya'll 2 amazing playlists by the beginning of summer! Soon as things settle down with school. Transferring schools can be great fun and yet a nightmare when you're not guided. I'll get it together soon.

Oh glorious Monday morning. I'm positively well. So much is going on right now I'm playing catch-up. Summer is almost here but unfortunately in L.A. it looks like October?

Anywho...New items in the MissRiot.com store. I've added this super kawaii studded corset to the store but there is only one so if it's your size snag it!

I'm really excited right now for the great things to come. I've signed up for my first class at the Upright Citizens Brigade and absolutely can't wait to start! Who knows maybe one day I will be able to guest star as the first American actor on the I.T. Crowd. (Love Richard Ayoade)

If you ever need something to watch on your Netflix, this is hands down one of the funniest shows there is!

My apologies by not getting to the blog sooner! Blogger was down for almost 2 days and I could publish absolutely nothing! Also because of this maintenance over 20 comments were deleted from the blog because they were made after May 11. Luckily, the comments forward to my e-mail. So I had a record of everyone who entered!

On the bright side, I'm very excited about my new boots. I don't quite have the cash for the Sam Edelman "Zoe" but these offer a cheaper comfortable alternative! The Dolcetta harness boots is apart of a special collaboration by Dolce Vita for Urban Outfitters. So they're only available via UO which is pretty much sold out nationwide. I went on one of my epic shoe hunts to find them and voila. Now, if I could only get my hands on a pair of the Jeffrey Campbell "Foxy" in Pink Suede.
