The days are scorching hot with the right dose of humidity to boot. Come evenings, thunders roll in from the horizons with a short round of downpour to cool off the day. As I sat by the balcony, with the glass doors wide open, I caught a scant scent of fresh damp earth, of magnolias glistening in the evening sun, of morning glories that have yet bade the day good night and scent of roses which seemed to intensify after the rain. The cheerful chirping of the sparrows slowly faded away until the only sound I heard was the night settling around me. Intoxicated. Content. Enriched.

I know, blogging has taken a back seat recently. What shall I say? Summer got in the way. I used to wonder non-stop about who would want to read about what I write about the ongoing (in)significant events in my life anyway. But whether I have an audience or not doesn’t matter much to me anymore. Have been taking some time off to read, to explore, to shop, to ponder, to experience, to experiment, to learn, to go places, to plan, to taste, to go off the beaten track and to wander out of my comfort zone. So you see why I need a break from blogging. Summer is all but too short and the sun sets way too fast for my liking. When the mood strikes again, I’ll be back.

If you happened to visit Bavaria, besides making a compulsory stop at Munich, I’d very much recommend you to drive/go a little north to visit this very beautiful town of Bamberg. There are only a handful of cities in Germany that aren’t destroyed by WWII bombings and Bamberg happens to one of those very lucky ones. A very nice tablecloth depicting the old town of Bamberg. It’s saying ‘Weltkulturerbe Bamberg’ (Bamberg is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Visiting Bamberg was actually one of those spur-of-the-moment decisions as a friend of mine stayed just an hour of train-ride from this charming little town. I didn’t expect much from it and I ended up liking the town much more than I first thought I would. The colourful old town of Bamberg
It has all the features that I’ve listed for a typical German town. A walk down the town and you’re surrounded by all sorts of colourful town houses, each one of them unique in their own steep, slanting roofs, the discerning wooden windows and the patterns on their brick walls. I can’t help but noticed that not one of those shop houses has the same design as the other. Little Venice of Bavaria
The river Regnitz which runs across the town no doubt adds some Italian flavour to this town as some eye-catching shops and houses with their colourful facade dot the riverbank, deeming it the Little Venice of Bavaria. The only thing missing is the gondola . The wonderfully painted walls of the city hall
Even the city hall stands out from the crowd with the stark, attractive paintings on its wall. You can’t miss it. Surprisingly the town was already teeming with tourists despite the not-too-cheerful weather that day. I can’t imagine how it’d be like when the weather is fine. A very Venice-like building
As we explored further into the less crowded area of the town, we came across some buildings which remind me very much of those that I saw in Venice. The quasi-dilapidated look, the plain wooden windows and doors, those rusty window sills are so Venice-y. That area was like Venice revisited! One of the brewery in town
Another very common sight in Bamberg. Buildings with very different heights directly next to each other and those half-timbered houses. I realised that I really love seeing those half-timbered houses. The geometry formed by the frames painted in contrast with the windows and the walls complemented with some tiny red potted plants creating such a pretty sight for the eyes to behold.

The past Sunday was a very atypical day in Germany. As far as I’ve remembered, I’ve never experienced a day here where all the elements in the sky, the sun, clouds, rain were trying to outdo each other. It rained for awhile, stopped in time to allow the sun to make its presence known, deceitfully shining brightly, letting me to believe that the rain has finally cleared and I could finally go cycling. Ha. My jubilation was short-lived as the heavy rain clouds set in just after I’ve put on my cycling gear. The succession of rain, sun, rain, sun was enough to make me give up going cycling altogether. Grrr. But towards the evening, around eight, the sky cleared up at long last leaving some harmless cotton-ball-like clouds behind, suffused in the mellow glow of the last rays of sunshine of the day. I was glad that the day wasn’t completely ruined at all when beholding such spectacular display of beauty. The sky has never been so blue!

Mother nature takes but she also generously gives.

Have you ever done some crazy stuffs in order to take certain shots with your camera, stuffs that require you to pose/act/behave less than ordinary? Not everyone shares the same passion for photography. I’ve encountered some people who pooh-poohed the notion of spending so much money on camera gears, while some, whose aims are to buy a camera lens a year.

A couple of days ago, I was visiting some friends in Bavaria and we were doing some very touristy stuffs around the very beautiful town of Bamberg (will write more on this later). There’s this must-visit lovely Gothic-style church on the itinerary, whose interior was a tad too dim for the camera, even though it was bright daylight outside, making it rather difficult to capture the elegant interior of the church.

There were however some plain glass windows built high up near the ceiling of the church, allowing shafts of sunlight to create some pools of lights along the pews. Then an idea dawned upon me to have a friend of mine to pose in the small pool of sunlight and she cheerily played along to have a picture of hers taken. I like this picture very much.

We weren’t being disrespectful nor sacrilegious to the church as we were simply taking pictures, right ? Then there were these group of Germans sitting on a pew beside the spot bathed in the rays of sunlight where we posed, amusing themselves while observing us. They were trying unsuccessfully to suppress their chuckles out of our ear shots.

Well, what shall I say? Sometimes we’d have to be thick-faced enough to get the perfect shot, agree? I think we scurried out of the church in no time after that .

With so many strawberries at hand, it doesn’t take me long to figure out how to dispose of them . I’ve been dying to make strawberry rolls myself after tasting the finger-linking-good version from T’s mom a couple of days ago. What shall I say, after toiling in the kitchen for hours in a row in the uncharted waters of making strawberry rolls when at times my brittle wall of confidence tended to be knocked down by sudden bouts of despair, wondering whether it’ll turn out right.Well, I’d say, my earlier round of despondence was rather uncalled for, as the results were better than expected (do I sound like some company analysts reporting its quarterly earning results? ), earning two thumbs up from my ‘unbiased’ fellow guinea pigs . Yumm….despite the not so perfect appearance, the chaos in the kitchen and the mess that had to be cleaned up later on, I was in cloud nine with the first bite.

Will update the post with the recipe later and I’m off to Bavaria! Have a great week ahead!
for the recipe..

Strawberry rolls

For the sponge cake roll you’ll need:
4 eggs
175g sugar
1 packet of vanilla sugar
80g starch flour
80g flour
1 tsp baking powder

For the filling, you’ll need:
500g fresh strawberries
6 pieces of white gelatine
500g curd cheese
250ml of cream (to be whipped)
75g sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
1 big tbsp of Kirschwasser

For the decorations, you’ll need:
Some strawberries
1 cup of whipped cream
Some lemon balm leaves

Preparation of the sponge cake roll:
1. Separate egg yolks from egg whites. Beat the egg whites together with a teaspoon of sugar at the highest speed of your hand mixer until the egg whites turn into a buoyant foam.

2. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks together with the 175g of sugar and vanilla sugar until combined. Then pour in the egg-white-foam without mixing them at this point.

3. Combine the starch flour, flour and the baking powder and sieve in the flour mixture on top of the egg-white-foam. Use a spoon to fold in the whole eggs-and-flour-mixture until everything is nicely combined. There is no need to use a mixer at this point because you’ll be surprised at how easily the flour and eggs-mixture can be easily combined just by using a spoon!

4. Preheat the oven at 195°C. Grease a square baking tray at the sides and lay it with parchment paper. Pour in the cake dough and smooth the dough out on the baking tray. Bake for about 10 minutes. Don’t over bake the dough as it’ll turn out too hard to be rolled.

5. After baking, flip the cake dough on to a clean, damp kitchen cloth. Moisten the parchment paper that usually sticks on the cake and carefully lift the parchment paper from the cake.
6. Roll the cake together with the kitchen cloth and let it cool completely.

Preparation of the strawberry filling:
1. Wash and cut the strawberries into small cube size.

2. Soften the white gelatine and heat it on gentle heat to dissolve it according to the instructions on the packets.

3. Whip the cream and mix it together with gelatine.

4. Add in lemon juice, Kirschwasser, and the whipped cream-gelatine mixture to the cream curd cheese and whip everything together with the mixer until combined. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of the mixture aside to be brushed on the cake when it’s finished. Then mix in the strawberries into the rest of the cheese mixture and use a spoon to once again mix everything together.

5. Unroll the sponge cake and smear the strawberry filling on the sponge cake. Then carefully, with the support of the kitchen cloth (which is still underneath the sponge cake), roll the cake together with the filling (just like rolling sushi ). Be prepared that the filling might spill out on the sides as it might still be a little too ‘watery’. Wipe away excess filling that has spilled out on the front and the sides of the cake.

6. Chill the cake in the fridge for about 2 hours, by then the strawberry filling should be hardened due to the gelatine.

7. Smear the outer cake with the cream-curd-mixture earlier on and use a fork to make some lines or some patterns on the cake. 8. Decorate the cake with the whipped cream and strawberries to your fancies!

Bf’s mom owns a piece of heaven in her garden. Her seemingly ‘hibernating’ garden will thaw from the winter frost every coming spring and bounces back to life with great speed in front of our eyes. It’s unbelievable how resilient mother nature is. It charges back to life with anew vigour and intensity as if the passing winter, which was unusually bitingly cold, was nothing but a comfortable, deep, long sleep. With each passing day, I’ll see new buds springing from every corner and petals growing bigger. With so many species of colourful plants, the garden naturally beckons some passing winged visitors. T’s mom told me that these brown coloured butterflies are actually migrating northward out of Africa at this time of the year.Certain plants in the garden seemed to attract these lovely creatures more than the other. I don’t care where these lovely, delicate beauties are heading as long as they make a stopover at the garden . There were at least six of them that day fluttering around the plants. It was a delight while barbequeing at the porch to have these winged beauties fluttering about. I was absolutely surprised to discover another type of butterfly, which reminds me very much from the one I saw in a picture taken by Stardust, with such exquisite colours on its wings. It is one thing to see these gorgeous butterflies in a commercial butterfly farm but it is totally another feeling to find them roaming about in your garden! This particular butterfly was fluttering about at high speed and it took me a great deal of patience to be as still as possible in order not to frighten it away. I wonder when I’ll see them again soon..
