MOBILE NO. 1 - Mobile/Baldwin

According to Moody's Economy at www.economy.com, Mobile County will have the fastest growing economy over the next five years among all 363 American metropolitan areas, growing 34.31 percent from 2007 through 2012.

The $3.7 billion ThyssenKrupp AG steel mill, Austal USA's continued growth in shipbuilding, and the possible Northrop Grumman/EADS airplane assembly plants are credited for this projected growth. Forbes also mentions the city's port and highway access as positives.

According to the survey, Huntsville, Auburn-Opelika and Gulfport-Biloxi, are nearby metropolitan areas that could be among the nation's hottest growth areas.

"Being at the top of this list is the best third-party endorsement we could ever receive. This proves that our economy is on a roll and continues to be recognized by investors throughout the world." said Bill Sisson, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce's vice president for economic development.

Short sales lose appeal among first-time buyers

WASHINGTON - Sept. 29, 2011 - Short sale transactions are becoming less popular among first-time homebuyers. Buying a home in a short sale transaction may offer a huge bargain - sale prices average 27 percent lower than non-distressed properties - but more first-time home buyers say the processing delays aren't worth the trouble.

Adding nearly 119,000 people in 2011, Florida has capped a decade of steady population increase to see the state grow 19% since 2000. Despite 2009, an historic year where more people left than arrived, the overall net growth of Florida has yielded two additional congressional seats, moving the state well on its way towards the becoming third most populous state in the nation. This ascendancy brings new responsibility to the shoulders of the state's leaders, and the direction this state.....

AIRBUS TOASTS MOBILE....... - Mobile/Baldwin

.......on the eve of a historic announcement

Late Sunday, a group of European business executives and Alabama political leaders gathered in a second-floor suite at the historic Battle House Hotel in Mobile.

There, as a scorching summer sun sank over the city's downtown, Airbus President Fabrice Bregier raised a glass of champagne in salute to his hosts.

Welcome to Mobile, he said, my American home.

The toast was returned by Gov. Robert Bentley, who will stand with Bregier today and announce a project that could forever alter the city's economic fortunes. Airbus is planning to construct a $600 million aircraft assembly plant at the Brookley Aeroplex, giving the Toulouse, France-based company its first production center on U.S. soil and vaulting Mobile into an elite group of cities that manufacture large airplanes.

Airbus, a subsidiary of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., will announce the massive project at a 10 a.m. news conference at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center. The plant will produce A319, A320 and A321 aircraft and employ 1,000 full-time workers at full capacity, according to an internal briefing document obtained by the Press-Register.

Construction is slated to begin in 2013 and create an estimated 2,500 jobs over a two-year period to build the plant. Aircraft assembly is scheduled to begin in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile plant in 2016. Airbus anticipates the plant will produce 40 to 50 aircraft per year by 2017.

Sunday, on the eve of the announcement, an entourage of Airbus officials mingled at the Battle House with guests including U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions and U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, among others. Representatives from the company's major suppliers and customers also traveled to Mobile to participate in the event, along with former Gov. Bob Riley, U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida and David Bronner, the head of the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

Mobile police and hotel security teemed throughout the lobby, ushering media members and curious guests away from the party. Local TV crews, stationed on the Royal Street sidewalk, trained their cameras on the hotel's main entrance.

Invited guests at the reception dined on seared scallops, loin of Kobe beef and fois gras roasted fingerling potatoes, according to several in attendance.

Bentley, in remarks to the group, said the project could have the same impact on Alabama as Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker in 1993 announced plans to build an auto assembly plant in Vance, Ala., its first production site outside of Europe and the first auto plant in Alabama.

The Mercedes plant opened a wave of new investment from suppliers and other related businesses, and was followed by Honda and Hyundai, who later opened assembly plants in Lincoln and Hope Hull, respectively. Alabama, which never produced a car before 1997, is on pace to become the nation's No. 3 automaker in the next few years.

For Mobile, the Airbus announcement is a victory born in the ashes of defeat.

The port city never fully recovered from a four-decade-old decision by the Department of Defense to shut down Brookley, a former Air Force base that drove the local economy.

There was more heartbreak in recent years.

On Feb. 24, 2011, the U.S. Air Force announced it was picking Boeing Co. over EADS for a contract to build a new fleet of refueling tankers. That decision, after a fierce, five-year war for the contract, was a bitter disappointment to EADS and to Mobile, which had hoped to win the work building the new planes.

One week later, EADS announced it would not challenge the decision, killing plans for a $600 million plant at Brookley that would have built tankers and Airbus A330 freighters.

AIRBUS PLANT IN MOBILE.... - Pensacola

.......could create 5,000 area jobs

In a tactical move in the battle to dominate the global aviation industry, European aerospace giant Airbus announced Monday it will build a plant in Mobile expected to cost $600 million.

The assembly facility will will employ 1,000 people when it reaches full production, likely to be four planes a month by 2017.

The likelihood that companies providing parts and supplies for Airbus will locate in the Pensacola area is high, said business leaders.

"We are going to create great jobs and generate growth right here," Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier said at the convention center in Mobile, where many of the 2,000 people in attendance waved American flags as music played in the background.

"We know in aerospace, when we create one job, there are about four related jobs, so we could bring as many as 5,000," Bregier said at a later news conference. "The management to the blue collars will be 100 percent American."

The move will boost the Northwest Florida economy and put the area on the "aerospace map," CEO of the Greater Pensacola Chamber Jim Hizer said.

Hizer said Pensacola's close proximity to Mobile will likely spur suppliers for Airbus to build facilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Hizer said the chamber has been approached by a supplier about locating a site in Escambia County.

University of West Florida economist Rick Harper said Airbus' decision is a potential "game changer for the Gulf Coast."

Airbus planned to build refueling tankers for the Air Force in Mobile, but its parent company, the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co., lost the contract to Boeing in 2011.

While Airbus had parts plants in the U.S. before, a full-fledged plane-making factory is a more significant presence and could help it boost its share of U.S. commercial and defense contracts.

The Airbus plant advances the company's strategy of expanding production outside its home base. The company, jointly run by French and German management, wants to expand in China and India as well as the United States.

Airbus plans to manufacture the A320, a widely used plane flown by Delta Air Lines, US Airways and others. The 150-seat plane is generally used on short- and medium-haul flights, and Airbus makes more of them than any of its other planes. They retail for $88 million, although discounts are common for big customers.
