Phantom Birds / Los Pájaros Fantasmas

2018-11-14T12:43:00.001+01:00

I HAVEN'T BEEN doing much of interest or significance in recent days. We have coffee and sometimes pitufos in the morning. I go for walks. I do some exercise. I blog (and create a new blog on Wordpress). I do laundry. I eat. We go out for dinner a few nights... or more. I write to and phone The Kid Brother. I take care of some business and put off other business. I wash dishes. I watch the sunrise.

I watch the birds outside our windows and I watch the cats watch the birds outside our windows.

I cuddle with the cats... and even sometimes San Geraldo.

When I write it all, it doesn't sound that bad. But I'm due for something constructive and cultural.

Click the five images to make them real... or more unreal.

Voy a caminar. Hago algo de ejercicio Yo "blog." Y crear un nuevo blog en Wordpress. Hago lavanderia. Yo como. Salimos a cenar unas noches ... o más. Escribo y llamo a The Kid Brother.

SAN GERALDO AND I are pretty much incompatible when it comes to sleeping together. We've tried over the years. Sometimes it's worked, but not for long. He likes it hot. I like it cold. I sleep with nothing on, rarely even a top sheet. He likes weight and can sometimes sleep under three blankets.

If he wakes up during the night, which he often does, he turns on the lights and reads. If I wake up during the night, which I often do, I can't turn on a light or read or I might be up for the rest of the night.

He snores. I sometimes do, too.

When we were both working, I would grind my teeth in my sleep. It kept him awake and left me aching in the morning. I also had restless leg syndrome, which would wake San Geraldo with a start during the night (and me, too, sometimes).

I sleep with four pillows and I'm an active sleeper; I move all over the bed. Pillows end up on the floor or under my feet. Even the cats won't get too close to me when I'm asleep.

Unlike us, Dudo and Moose are very compatible sleepers. However, when they're awake they can be brutal. San Geraldo and I are always kind. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

I do wish we could be more like the cats.

San Geraldo y yo siempre somos amables. (Esa es mi historia y me atengo a ella.)

Ojalá pudiéramos ser más como los gatos.

At Least It's Not Alabama / Al Menos No Es Alabama

2018-11-11T14:34:00.004+01:00

THE FIRST TIME San Geraldo's cousin Ellen visited the United States from her home in Bergen, Norway, she for some reason decided to try and sound "Southern." She sat in the car and, in her best imitation of a generic Southern American accent, she repeated, "Hi, my name is Ellen and I'm from Alabama. I got me a gun to protect my family." For some reason, it was funny.

About a year later, we were in an antique and collectibles shop in Santa Barbara and found a new, but made to look old, metal roadside sign that read, "Welcome to Mississippi. At least it's not Alabama." Of course, we bought it for Ellen and brought it to Norway that Christmas. She hammered nail holes into the sign (to look like bullet holes) and hung it on the wall.

I saw this guy on the train the other day. At least it's not AlaBama. And I have no idea what "old mincren" means. Another clothing item lost in translation.

Note:
Crimson Tide is the nickname of the University of Alabama football team.

IT' SHOULD BE ALABAMA... NOT ALALAMA.
DEBERÍA SER ALABAMA... Y NO ALALAMA.

I'VE FIGURED OUT what our local "boat builder" is up to (click here if you missed that post). With what's going on in many parts of the world, it could be time for another biblical flood.

Do you think I should start gathering the animals (in by twosies twosies)?

Noah has added more spray foam insulation, some styrofoam side panels — and cardboard. I don't hold out much hope for this ark.

That's The Way, Uh-Huh Uh-Huh, I Like It

2018-11-08T11:02:00.000+01:00

WHEN WE LIVED in San Diego in the 1990s, I alphabetized the cookbooks in our library. I was so happy with the results — order out of chaos — that I decided to do the same with our mess of spices in one of the kitchen cabinets. When I finished, the spices were in alphabetical order on stepped shelving and two-tiered turntables (which, oddly, I always had on hand and which should tell you something about my personality), easily visible, easily reachable, and exactly where they were supposed to be.

When San Geraldo walked in the door, I pointed at the bookshelves and announced, "Look what I did!"

"What?"

"I alphabetized the cookbooks!"

He sputtered. "Well, using what system?" (I should note he was director of libraries at University of California, San Diego.)

"What?"

"Where did you put the Sunset Ground Beef Cookbook?"

"What?"

"Well, did you put it under Sunset? Ground? Or is it under Beef?!? How am I supposed to find anything?"

"I also alphabetized the spices," I commented as I walked into the kitchen.

"But... What system did you use? Is black pepper under Pepper? Is it under Black? What about red pepper? Or Spanish Paprika? Is ground cumin under Cumin or is it under Ground?"

"Jerry, tell me, what system do YOU use for organizing the spices and the cookbooks?"

"I don't use any. I just search for what I need."

"OK, then, just pretend everything is still a complete mess and keep searching."

Today's two photos should give you an idea of what it's like to live with me. And, just so you know, this is all me. I make no demands of San Geraldo, who never puts anything away anyway. And, yes, I rearrange daily as stock dwindles.

I control what I can.

"No uso ninguno.

Be Fruitful And ... Vote / Ser Fructifero Y ... Vota

2018-11-06T12:07:00.002+01:00

ONE OF THE first people we fell in love with when we moved to Los Boliches in the city of Fuengirola nearly 6 years ago was Ana Crespillo. She owns one of the local fruit markets (the best local fruit market), housed in the Los Boliches public marketplace. Ana brings sunshine and color to even the dreariest day. Even if she does prefer San Geraldo's bear hugs to my hugs, which she says feel like she's hugging a block of wood. I suppose, in one sense, I should be proud of my rock-hard physique — which I'm sure is what she means. Besides, San Geraldo does give the best hugs. (So does Ana.)

By the way, I paid 50 euros today to send our ballots via DHL to California. Orange County (The OC) had better count them! Especially after not confirming our registration, not responding to my emails, and emailing our official ballots at the last minute after I wrote and complained to the Federal Voting Assistance Program. It turns out that, if I had better understood how it all worked, I wouldn't have needed to wait anyway. May all our votes bear fruit!

¡Orange County ( The OC) debería contarlos!

Where Are We Going? / ¿A Dónde Vamos?

2018-11-05T13:51:00.000+01:00

I WENT FOR a hike Friday into a bit of the countryside with my pal Luke and his parents, Pedro and Kathleen. Leave it to a gifted 3-year-old to pose the existential question of the day.

Every few seconds Luke asked his mother, in English, "Where are we going?" "On a hike" or "for a walk" or "to explore," she would reply.

So Luke would turn to his father and ask, in Spanish, "Donde va?" Pedro would correct his Spanish and say, "¿Donde vamos?" which would prompt Luke to ask, "¿Donde vamos?" Same answers. In Spanish.

I tried faxing in our absentee ballots to Orange County, California, today. They are due Friday and we only received them this past Friday. The FAX wouldn't go through. Apparently too busy in Orange County. So now I have to rush mail them and hope they arrive on time. And I ask, "Where are we going?"

LUKE CHECKS HIS MAP.

Y yo pregunto: "¿A dónde vamos?"

YES, HE ASKED, "WHERE ARE THEY GOING?"

I WAS GOING to tell you the details of my recent frustrations with online technologies — like the fact that some readers are unable to comment on some Google Blogspot blogs, like mine, for no apparent reason — or the fact that Facebook has been blocking me from sharing my blog posts for more than a month because either: 1) my blog has been reported as abusive, or 2) Facebook thinks this is spam, or 3) this post goes against our "Community Standards", or 4) Facebook is experiencing technical difficulties and apologizes for the inconvenience.

But I'm not going to talk about that today. I'm going to be more Zen... and talk about S'mores. We had dinner at our friends' Pedro and Kathleen's the other night. Pedro cooked vegetable soup, which was exceptional. Kathleen followed with S'mores by candlelight. Traditionally, S'mores are created by skewering marshmallows on twigs and roasting them over a campfire. Kathleen, always creative, always non-traditional, and — more importantly — without a campfire, gave us each a chopstick and lit a "Buddha" candle. It worked just as well.

We followed our Buddha S'mores with a game of cards. Pedro won. As you can see by his reaction in the last two photos, Pedro doesn't win very often.

KATHLEEN COULDN'T FIND GRAHAM CRACKERS. WE DID NOT COMPLAIN.
KATHLEEN NO PUDO ENCONTRAR GALLETAS GRAHAM.

It's Not Underwear / No Es Ropa Interior

2018-11-03T13:40:00.002+01:00

WHILE GETTING READY for Halloween at Mesón Salvador, I asked San Geraldo if he wanted to put a change of clothes in a bag. His costume was going to be hot and uncomfortable and I couldn't imagine him wanting to wear it all evening. (And I knew I'd have to listen to him complain.)

"No, I've got it figured out. I'm wearing my black, long underwear and a black shirt under the costume," he responded.

"And you're going to walk around the restaurant in your underwear?"

"No, I'll wear black boxer briefs over the long underwear."

"That's underwear, too, you know."

"Oh, it'll be dark!"

HE LOOKS READY FOR THE ROYAL WEDDING.

LAST NIGHT, WE were at our favorite place, Mesón Salvador, for their second annual Halloween dinner (click here for last year). We, and our friend Elena, even went in costume this time. But we wore masks instead of makeup because: 1) We couldn't figure out what makeup to buy; 2) We had no idea how to apply makeup and; 3) We had no idea how to remove it.

The menu was excellent, clever, and extremely creepy. All the usual zombies and ghouls were in attendance. I'll introduce some of them tomorrow. Following that, I'll share photos of us in costume (as well as San Geraldo in his underwear).

Today, it's all about the zombie food.

Am I Batty? / ¿Soy Chiflado?

2018-10-31T12:15:00.001+01:00

NO, I DON'T think I'm batty. Well, I'm at least less batty than I was a few days ago. Does telling you I'm struggling with my clinical depression help me come out of the darkness or do I admit I'm struggling when I'm already escaping the darkness? I'm sure it's the latter because, if all it took to overcome depression was to tell someone else, there wouldn't be a problem, would there?

But, speaking of batty, for some reason I fixated on the fruit bats (flying foxes) hanging around the aviary at Bioparc Fuengirola last week. Taking inspiration from an image recently shared by the very clever "She Who Seeks" (click here), I flipped some of the bats 90 or 180 degrees. Batty!

Entonces, me pregunto si soy "batty."

¡Loco!

THERE'S A MAN in town who used to get paid by a sand sculptor to guard his work This past summer, he created a sand castle of his own and chatted up the passersby to drop some coins for his efforts. It might possibly have been the worst "art" I've seen on our beaches. But he was out there every day for a number of weeks, so I dropped some coins on his "tip towel."

Lately, he's been on the paseo building a "boat" out of scrap wood and spray foam insulation. I sure hope he has no plans to take it out to sea.

The man has a camper van parked on the paseo. I walked by the other day when the curtain was drawn across the side door and I snapped a picture of his boat on the roof. At that very moment, he threw open the curtain and my camera caught him in nothing but a pair of blue-striped boxer briefs. I've only shown you the boat. You're welcome. (Trust me.)

The photo of the boat under construction is followed by some of his earlier projects. (OK, that's a lie.) But, click the images and they'll get bigger. (And that's the truth.)

Weathering The Storm / Aguantando La Tormenta

WE'VE HAD SOME rain here (not much locally, but terrible flooding in the area) and quite a lot of wind. It was a beautiful morning and, although the sky is still a vivid blue, San Geraldo's cyclonic winds are back.

You might remember the photos of the two sand sculptures I shared 10 days ago. One sculptor was determined to weather the storm. The other took his chances. Here's what's happened since. I'm not quite sure who I'm more like. Probably the latter.

THIS MORNING. IT PROBABLY LOOKS LOOK LIKE A BLIZZARD RIGHT NOW.
ESTA MAÑANA. PROBABLEMENTE PARECE UNA TORMENTA DE NIEVE AHORA MISMO.

TEN DAYS AGO. HOW HE MADE IT THROUGH THE RAIN.

TEN DAYS AGO: REMEMBER THE RAT WHO DIDN"T PLAN FOR THAT RAINY DAY?
HACE DIEZ DÍAS: ¿RECUERDES LA RATA QUE NO HIZO UN PLAN PARA ESE DÍA LLUVIOSO?

HE'S GONE AND THIS IS WHAT'S LEFT OF HIS CHEESE.
SE HA IDO Y ESTO ES LO QUE QUEDA DE SU QUESO.

Kalimantan

MY MOTHER THE Dowager Duchess hated animals and only tolerated container pets. We had two parakeets (one at a time). Those were followed by, also one at a time: a turtle, a chameleon, a series of hamsters and, finally, three large tanks of tropical fish (all at the same time, in my bedroom).

When I went away to school, I deeded the fish tanks to the Kid Brother. That first winter, he was worried they'd get cold, so he turned the heaters up. He boiled the fish.

Unlike the Dowager Duchess, I love animals. (It's people that give me trouble.) Introducing Kalimantan (Kali). She's a 2-year-old Borneo Orangutan (critically endangered) born at Bioparc Fuengirola. In 2013, Bioparc Fuengirola began a partnership with Borneo Nature Foundation to promote education and preservation of the species and its natural habitat. Our "Bioparc" makes me proud. Kali makes me smile.

Presentando a Kalimantan (Kali). Nuestro "Bioparc" me enorgullece. Kali me hace sonreír.

AND SPEAKING OF MAKING ME SMILE. DUDO TAKES A BREAK FROM THE BIRDS.

Moose And The Sunrise / Moose Y El Amanecer

I WOKE UP just before 7:30 Friday morning to the start of another spectacular sunrise. I grabbed my camera from the night table and headed outside. When I arrived on the terrace, I was surprised to find Moose sitting in the dark admiring the view. I had no idea a cat could appreciate a sunrise.

I wonder if I should enroll him in a school for exceptional cats. (Maybe CATS College Canterbury.)

Click the images for a closer look at what Moose and I saw.

NEVER MIND!
HE WAS COVETING A CRAG MARTIN ROOSTING IN THE AWNING (THANKFULLY OUTSIDE THE GLASS CURTAIN).
¡NO IMPORTA!

LOOKING FOR A bit of "me" time Thursday, I really identified with two ring-tailed lemurs who sat quietly on a log only to be overrun by their extended family. But when their extended family left as suddenly as they arrived, my two friends looked a bit lonely, which I guess is not much different from how I feel. I want to be alone... until I'm left alone.

I wonder if a couple of the males had had a "stink fight." They really do that. They cover their tails with their scent and then waft it at their opponents. I'm sure we all know someone who does that.

Twelve lemur photos. Because it struck me funny. (Click the images for bigger lemurs.)

DUDO THIS MORNING. "OH, BIRDIES, I'M LONELY..."
DUDO ESTA MAÑANA. "OH, PAJARITOS, ESTOY SOLITARIO..."

ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T said anything, I've been having some emotional challenges again lately. Just a normal downswing in my life. Brain chemistry. (I was never very good at chemistry.)

In times like these, I withdraw from people — sometimes completely and sometimes, like now, just a little. Communing with animals is my therapy. Since the cats are so busy with the crag martins, I decided to go to Bioparc Fuengirola (the zoo) after lunch today.

In January, Bioparc Fuengirola become the only animal park in Andalusia authorized by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums to house a reproductive group of gorillas. I'd like you to meet my new friend Echo, a Western Lowland Gorilla who moved to Fuengirola in May to hook up with longtime resident Kim. He and Kim are getting along well... although I don't think they've been "intimate."

I think Echo and I hit it off well. He might not agree.

AUNQUE NO HE mencionado nada, he estado teniendo algunos desafíos emocionales de nuevo últimamente.

"OH, HI."
"OH, HOLA."

"OK, STARTING TO GET UNCOMFORTABLE."
"OK, ESTO ESTÁ EMPEZANDO A SER INCÓMODO."

"WILL YOU BE GONE WHEN I OPEN MY EYES?"
"¿TE HABRÁS IDO CUANDO ABRA MIS OJOS?"

"GUESS NOT."
"SUPONGO QUE NO."

ECHO GOES TO VISIT KIM WHO WAS HAVING A SOAK DOWN BELOW.
ECHO VA A VISITAR A KIM QUE ESTABA TENIENDO UN BAÑO ABAJO.

BACK HOME, MOOSE AND DUDO JUST IGNORE ME. ECHO WILL LEARN.
DE VUELTA A CASA, MOOSE Y DUDO SIMPLEMENTE ME IGNORAN. ECHO APRENDERÁ.

Chili Con Candle / Chili Con Candela

SAN GERALDO MADE chili con carne for dinner last night. It was delicious. As is his tendency, he decorated the kitchen with the ingredients. When I lit the kitchen candle this morning, the fragrance reminded me of dinner.

BEFORE I CLEANED LAST NIGHT. I WOULD HAVE MOVED THE CANDLE OUT OF THE WAY BEFORE COOKING, BUT THAT'S JUST ME.

The Whole Kit And Caboodle / Todo El "Kit Y El Caboodle"

2018-10-23T16:14:00.000+02:00

SAN GERALDO, BEING originally from the State of South Dakota and therefore speaking English as a second language... (That's a lie, people in South Dakota do actually speak English as their first language; only San Geraldo does not). Anyway, San Geraldo, as you may already know, often mixes metaphors and mispronounces words.

Come to think of it, Malapropism may be his native tongue.

The other day, San Geraldo asked me, "Where did the expression the whole kit and caboodle come from?" As I tried to explain what I thought might be the origin of this expression, which simply means "everything" or "all of them," I discovered that what San Geraldo was actually saying was the whole "kitten caboodle." No wonder he gets confused.

"HMMM, GIN. BUT WHAT'S THE PLASTIC TUBE FOR?"
"HMMM, GIN. PERO ¿PARA QUÉ SIRVE EL TUBO DE PLÁSTICO?"

"COKE... BREAD. NOW THIS MAKES SENSE."
"COCA COLA... PAN.
