Romney Endorses Snyder in MI Governor's Race

All the buzz in Michigan today seems to be about Mitt Romney's endorsement of Rick Snyder as the next Governor of Michigan.

Mitt Romney, the former Republican contender in the 2008 president election, has endorsed Michigan's gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder.

The endorsement was announced Sunday by Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC.

"Rick Snyder is a successful businessman, manager, and job creator, which makes him uniquely qualified to lead Michigan through these challenging times," Romney, a Michigan native, said in a statement. "Rick will promote pro-growth policies that will put people back to work and get Michigan back on the right track."

Earlier this month Snyder, a businessman from Ann Arbor, won the Republican primary by a wide margin. He will face off with the top Democratic vote-getter Virg Bernero, mayor of Lansing, at the polls in November.

Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, grew up in Bloomfield Hills.

Mitt Romney in Michigan Today and Tomorrow for Book Tour

I'm very excited that the No Apology Tour is coming to Michigan tonight in Birmingham and tomorrow in Grand Rapids!

These stops have been advertised at The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, MLive, The Oakland Press, and I'm sure many more.

It's great to see how much easier it is for Mitt to get press attention than it was when he ran for President. Judging by the first stops of the No Apology book tour, both of these Michigan events should be huge! I can't wait!

What an American President's Response to the Iran Election Should be

That timely and powerful message from Mitt Romney is exactly what the people of Iran should be hearing from all of the leaders in our country.

The people of Iran and the people of the United States have often had trouble understanding each other because of enormous cultural differences. However, it appears the people of Iran are now staring death in the face in order to achieve some liberty. Throughout the history of the United States, we have defended the spread of freedom around the world. The obviously rigged and fraudulent elections in Iran have provided the United States another chance to promote the spread of freedom. However, most of the Main Stream Media ignored the demonstrations of hundreds of thousands Iranians until social networks like Twitter and Facebook demanded coverage. Still, the coverage has not been sufficient. Furthermore, when given a chance to support the people of Iran, President Obama first was silent. Then, he made an even more dangerous decision and instead warned that US "meddling" in Iran's internal politics would be counterproductive, and vowed to push forward his engagement policy with Iran.

How can this president possibly continue to "engage" with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who is now ordering his army and police to shoot at unarmed civilians, expel journalists, bomb mosques, filter and/or shutdown social networking sites, poor boiling water on crowds, and utilize other methods of intimidation?

We already knew Obama didn't seem to think Ahmadinejad's promises to "wipe Israel of the map" were serious enough to stop engaging with him, but how much repression of freedom and bloodshed will Obama tolerate?

Moreover, this incipient revolution is no longer only about the election. Obama totally misses the point. The election allowed the political space and provided the spark for the eruption of anti-regime fervor that has been simmering for years and awaiting its moment.

Unlike the perception the Main Stream Media creates, most of the people (especially the young people) are favorably disposed towards the United States. "Why?" you ask? The spread of technology in Iran has allowed young people (50% of the population of Iran is 27-years-old or younger) to be introduced to more than just the propaganda of the Ahmadinejad regime. Many Iranians have Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites which have facilitated conversations and relationship with the West. The cultural barriers are now starting to be understood, and freedom is on the march in Iran.

People aren't dying in the street because they want a recount of hanging chads in suburban Isfahan. They want to bring down the tyrannical, misogynist, corrupt theocracy that has imposed itself with the very baton-wielding goons that today attack the demonstrators. This started out about election fraud. But like all revolutions, it has far outgrown its origins. What's at stake now is the very legitimacy of this regime -- and the future of the Middle East.

This revolution will end either as a Tiananmen (a hot Tiananmen with massive and bloody repression or a cold Tiananmen with a finer mix of brutality and co-optation) or as a true revolution that brings down the Islamic Republic. For the first time in 30 years, a true revolution is not impossible. Imagine the repercussions. It would mark a decisive blow to Islamist radicalism, of which Iran today is not just standard-bearer and model, but financier and arms supplier. It would do to Islamism what the collapse of the Soviet Union did to communism -- leave it forever spent and discredited.

In the region, it would launch a second Arab spring. The first in 2005 -- the expulsion of Syria from Lebanon, first elections in Iraq and early liberalization in the Gulf states and Egypt -- was aborted by a fierce counterattack from the forces of repression and reaction, led and funded by Iran. Now, with Hezbollah having lost elections in Lebanon and with Iraq establishing the institutions of a young democracy, the fall of the Islamist dictatorship in Iran would have an electric and contagious effect. The exception -- Iraq and Lebanon -- becomes the rule. Democracy becomes the wave. Syria becomes isolated; Hezbollah and Hamas, patronless. The entire trajectory of the region is reversed.

All hangs in the balance. Ahmadinejad is deciding whether to do a Tiananmen, and what side is the Obama administration taking? None. Except for the desire that this "vigorous debate" (press secretary Robert Gibbs' disgraceful euphemism) over election "irregularities" not stand in the way of U.S.-Iranian engagement on nuclear weapons. Even from the narrow perspective of the nuclear issue, the administration's geopolitical calculus is absurd. There is zero chance that any such talks will denuclearize Iran. On Monday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared yet again that the nuclear "file is shut, forever." The only hope for a resolution of the nuclear question is regime change, which (if the successor regime were as moderate as pre-Khomeini Iran) might either stop the program or make it manageable and nonthreatening.

That's our fundamental interest. And our fundamental values demand that America stand with demonstrators opposing a regime that is the antithesis of all we believe. And where is our president? Afraid of "meddling." Afraid to take sides between the head-breaking, women-shackling exporters of terrorism -- and the people in the street yearning to breathe free. This from a president who fancies himself the restorer of America's moral standing in the world and built his entire campaign upon hope and change while he does nothing to bring hope or facilitate change to people who want it so bad they are willing to die for it.

Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) Must Be Stopped!

This is not a cause simply for pro-lifers. This is a cause for all Americans. In the last 25 years, the United States government has never made a decision that would harm as many people as the Freedom of Choice Act would. Even if you are Pro-Choice, if you see the consequences of the passage of FOCA, you will be against it.

The pro-abortion lobby is pushing this bill which will knock down every single restriction on abortion in this country. Effects of this bill include:

1. Partial-birth abortion will now be legal.

2. Parental consent laws for minors will no longer be in effect. Although a seventeen-year-old girl has to have her parents present in order to get acne medicine, a thirteen-year-old can get an abortion without her parents knowing. Think of the injury done to these young women, as well as to their children!

3. Laws prohibiting public funding of abortion will be struck down. The American taxpayer will now have to fund something many of us know to be murder.

4. Laws requiring women to be shown information about (including being shown ultrasounds) and alternatives to abortion will be struck down. Think about any other surgery that's performed: you are bombarded with information. And yet, in one of the most invasive medical procedures, women would be kept ignorant of the facts.

5. Laws allowing medical staff and hospitals to refuse to perform abortion on grounds of conscience will be struck down. (Where's the freedom of choice here?)

6. Laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions would be invalidated because they may "interfere with" access to abortion. (Talk about protection for women!)

7. Government agencies and officials are prohibited from taking any action that would "discriminate against the exercise of" the FOCA-created legal rights, with respect to any "benefits, facilities, services, or information," would leave government officials open to lawsuits for anything that anybody thought "discriminate(s)" against abortion.

Legalized abortion on demand has pitted mother against child and has created a culture of death that forces women to choose between their children and their educations, jobs, and housing. We need REAL, life-affirming solutions to difficult pregnancies, not more of the same. We need laws that support the rights of mothers and babies, not laws that, like FOCA, abandon women and their children to the unregulated greed of the abortion industry.

FOCA defends "to the death" a choice that is invalid in the first place - the idea that mothers and their children are enemies. Legalized abortion perpetuates the status quo - that a pregnant woman must choose between meeting her child's needs and her own. We can do better than that - we can and we must love them both. We can and we must change the status quo in this country that says that abortion is an acceptable solution to an unexpected pregnancy. We can and we must offer creative and practical solutions that identify and solve the root causes that drive women to abortion. FOCA perpetuates more of the same and does NOTHING to eliminate the root causes that drive women to abortion in the first place.

Furthermore, FOCA eliminates the freedom of pro-life doctors to refuse to perform abortions. Doctors who continue to refuse to perform abortions could be sued and barred from practice. Fewer doctors = higher healthcare costs for Americans and unemployed doctors.

Mitt Romney for President 2012

The United States has elected Barack Obama as the next president. We acknowledge that he is our president and we hope he makes the United States a better place for all of us. We also recognize that some upsides exist to having Obama as our president. However, we watched Obama make promises during the campaign to implement policies that will be devastating if he carries through with them. We are basing our forecast of the next four years based on what Obama himself said he will do. We hope for the best and plan for the worst. In 1976, we needed a Jimmy Carter to get Ronald Reagan and today, we may have needed a Barack Obama in order to get Mitt Romney. In four years, if Obama implements his policies, America is going to be in such a mess financially (and in a lot of other categories) that we will need an extremely capable and experienced President to fix our country. People will be more engaged and able to see past any attempts to slander Mitt Romney because it takes only a small amount of research to see how baseless the attacks of liberals on Mitt are. After the 2008 elections and the Democratic gains in the house, senate and the presidency, the Republican Party realizes what a huge mistake it made by not nominating Romney. Mitt emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the front runners of the Republican nomination in 2008. Most conservative leaders endorsed Mitt days before Super Tuesday, but it was too late. They will endorse Mitt much sooner next time! Combine that with the fact that there is no way Obama can deliver on all of his campaign promises, and Mitt Romney will be elected our 45th president in 2012!

Study after study showed that Mitt was attacked far more than any other candidate by the liberal elite during the primaries and even after he dropped out and some expected Mitt would become VP. Anyone who watches the Daily Show, Colbert Report, MSNBC, or other liberal-leaning programming must have scratched their head at how much Mitt was (and continues to be) attacked. That should tell you something. Also consider the way those same liberals celebrated when Mitt dropped out and once again when Mitt wasn't chosen for VP. Liberals fear Mitt most and for good reason. Mitt represents the largest and strongest threat to liberalism in America.

To everyone who is dying for a true conservative leader to emerge in this country and Bring America Back, I have a few questions for you:
Who sacrificed his chance to win the nomination in order to help John McCain unify the party?
Who endorsed and went to more events for conservatives than Mitt?
Who was in Denver leading a conservative rally during the democratic convention?
Who was the most vocal figure to defend John McCain and Sarah Palin during the toughest parts of the campaign?
Who finally gave a voice to the conservatives who needed one to address the auto bailout?
Conservatives are hungry for a real leader.
One has emerged, and it's time we Rally to Romney!

Combating Nuclear Terrorism: We are faced today with the horrific proposition that those who speak of genocide are developing the capability to carry it out.

Confronting Radical Jihad: The consequences of ignoring this threat such as a radicalized Islamic actor possessing nuclear weapons are simply unacceptable.

Advocating Public Service: Mitt will carry the torch from his father (former Michigan governor George Romney) in being a strong advocate for public service.

Winning the Global Economic Competition: We must improve America's global competitiveness and unleash the American economy through lower taxes and less government. Open foreign markets to US products and goods. If we operate much smarter, we can balance the ridiculous trade deficit that we not have every year. It will take drastic measures, but fortunately we have a man who is proven to take whatever drastic measures are necessary to fix the problems he's faced with.

Making the Tax Code Simpler and Smaller: Just look at what Mitt did in Massachusetts. He closed loopholes that were stopping certain people and corporations from paying their fair share. Without raising taxes, we can balance the budget while making the tax code more friendly for the suffering middle and lower class.

Ending Our Dependence on Foreign Oil: As long as we import much of our oil from unstable regions and countries, our national security and economic prosperity are threatened. We will protect the environment at the same time. We must tap into every safe form of energy we can while increasing research on new forms of energy.

Curbing Out of Control Federal Spending: Politicians from both parties in Washington, D.C. have spent too much money on too many programs for far too long. We need ethics reform for all politicians in Washington

Ending the Tide of Illegal Immigrants: We must secure the border, implement an enforceable employer verification system, punish sanctuary cities and reject amnesty.

Working Across the Isle: Mitt will pick the best and brightest (regardless of party) to solve America's toughest problems just like he did as governor of Massachusetts.

Reducing Spiraling Health Care Costs: A free market, federalist approach to make quality, affordable health insurance available to every American. Look at Mitt's health care plan in action in Massachusetts where the numbers of uninsured people has fallen drastically and the only problems with it are the mandates that Mitt fought to keep out.

Confronting Threats to American Culture, Values, and Freedoms: The American values that have been at the heart of our historic rise to world leadership are being challenged everyday. We must protect the freedom of religion...not freedom from religion.

As for Mitt's pro-life position, he will appoint strict constitutionalist judges should there be any openings in the Supreme Court, but while we're waiting, Mitt will do far more than even Bush did. The Republican Party has been dragging the pro-life crowd along for years now, but not much has been done besides the good judges Bush appointed. Mitt will work to institute policies that provide care and counseling for women who are struggling with a decision on an abortion. Mitt will work to increase the capacity of adoptions. Mitt will work to implement parent notification laws so minors can't get an abortion without parental consent. Mitt will work to bring into law the law that some states have implemented where women have an ultrasound before they get an abortion which has had a drastic effect in decreasing abortions everywhere it has been implemented. Mitt also wants to make sure people understand that being pro-life doesn't simply mean standing up to protect life in the womb, but it also means doing what we can to protect and preserve the lives of every American as best as we can.

Raising the Bar on Education: Improving our schools is critical to the future of our country and our economy. Closing the achievement gap in our schools is the civil rights issue of our time. Many politicians promise things like this, but once again, all you have to do is look at Mitt's track record in Massachusetts where Massachusetts ranked #1 for public schools by the end of Mitt's term as governor.

Rebuilding/Repairing America's Infrastructure (i.e. roads and bridges): This not only improves safety and efficiency, but these projects provide jobs for hardworking Americans as well.

Michael Reagan says Ronald Reagan would have endorsed John McCain; He's right. As Michael notes:

In 1976 the Ford vs. Reagan campaign for the Republican presidential nomination got so heated it looked as if my father and Jerry Ford would never again talk to one another.

When it was over and Ford had won, what did Ronald Reagan do? He simply went all-out to help Ford win his re-election, as did I and as did my sister Maureen. My dad simply followed his rule of backing the Republican candidate no matter who he was.

Of course, as we have noted here on several occasions -- Mitt Romney seems to be following the Ronald Reagan 1976 playbook. His CPAC speech has been compared to Reagan's '76 convention speech -- and now -- his endorsement is being compared to Reagan's support of Ford ...

But while Ronald Reagan's loss -- and his re-birth in '80 -- is a fairly recent model to use as a comarision, the archetype is almost as old as time. As Jung would put it, this entire narrative has long been a part of our “collective unconscious.”

In essence, whether he's doing it consciously. or not, Mitt Romney is seeking to tap into a mythological narrative called the "Hero's Journey."

If you've read Arthur or the Odyssey -- or have seen Star Wars or Rocky -- you are familiar with the idea. Before reaching the "promised land," a hero must first endure his "wilderness years." This is essentially a right of passage or initiation (I've written that Mitt Romney finally passed his "Initiation" into the conservative movement.)

Of course, the last stage of the "Hero's Journey" is when the hero reaches his destiny and in a sense, rises from the dead. If you're a movie fan, this is the part when Rocky finally wins or when Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are given their awards. Or if you like politics, it's the day Reagan wins after everyone thought he was finished in '76.

In Mitt Romney's scenario, he becomes the Republican standard-bearer, and ultimately is elected president.
