Northeast Shelters during Covid 19 in Chennai (NEIWAC)

We had 5 Northeast Shelters in various parts of the city housing 250 people (27th March to 10th May 2020)

Before the Shramik Trains in the following Shelters:

Most of this people in this Shelter no longer had enough money to pay for their rent and for their food as they were without wages for more than 2 months.

Many of those whom we had given ration had run out of money to buy food. The ration kit that we distributed consisted of 5 kgs of rice, 1 kg dal, 1 kg sugar & 1 packet of oil. We are thankful to the generous contribution of various donors who would like to remain anonymous.

The Northeast migrant worker conundrum post Covid-19 shutdown and the way forward

As of 10th April 2020, there is a longing among the Northeast people locked down in metros either in Shelter provided by government or at their home to return to their homes. Many of them among the Northeast are longing to return to their Homes in the Northeast. On the one hand there is news among the various Northeast state governments that the states would be under lockdown until 30th of April. Most of the people in the unorganized labor are now in the dilemna, the places where they are working have already been shut down and many of them have not received their wages. Many of them have asked their Landlord for extension and payment of rent in the coming month. With no income from work they are not sure how they are going to pay their rent, morever the sector that they are working on

There is a lot of apprehension and fear among those from the Northeast involved in the unorganized sector. The places where they work – Movie Theatres, Shopping Malls, Restaurants, Bars, Spa’s and Hotels are likely to be the hardest hit Industries post covid 19. People are likely to be reluctant to go for a Movie or go for a Massage post Covid 19 due to fear and physical distancing encouraged during Covid 19. A lot of these migrants are likely to come back to their villages and towns unemployed and leading them to greater poverty.

This would be a good opportunity for the respective state government to reskill most of these youth in different sector provided under the National Skill Development Corporation. One area that would be a good place to train these youth would be in the Healthcare sector. They could be trained as Health care assistants, dental assistants, diploma in lab technology, dialysis , radiology or many others which would strengthen the Healthcare system in the country. India has one of the lowest healthcare spending at 1.6% of the GDP while defense spending is 2.41 % of the GDP. The Government is likely to realize post covid19 how ill prepared it is to face such a pandemic with only 0.11 Hospital beds per 1000 people and very less ventilators. Most of the developed European countries who had suffered through the pandemic had over 10% of their budget allocated to Healthcare. Spending all those budget amount to healthcare instead of Jet fighters and aircraft carriers would definitely be a good defense against future virus outbreak and bio attacks and also benefit the common man in terms of better healthcare facilities as well as provide employment to the youth of the country in this age of artificial intelligence as no technology can replace the human empathy and care in the Health care sector.

Which state has the highest Human Development in Northeast India

Northeast India has 45.5 million people compromising only 3.7% of India’s population but cover 8% of the country’s area. Northeast India is also a place of diversity with no single language spoken in each state. While English and Hindi are the most commonly spoken languages, there are 225 tribes with distinct language and culture in the mountains and valleys of Northeast.

The region is rich in natural resources, covered with dense forests, has the highest rainfall in the country, with large and small river systems nesting the land and is a treasure house of flora and fauna. Marked by diversity in customs, cultures, traditions and languages, it is home to multifarious social, ethnic and linguistic groups. Troubled by history and geo-politics, the North East has remained one of the most backward regions of the country. The trauma of partition in 1947 not only took the region backwards by at least a quarter of a century, but also placed hurdles on future economic progress. It isolated the region, sealed both land and sea routes for commerce and trade, and severed access to traditional markets and the gateway to the East and South-East Asia

While efforts have been made to check different parameters, I do not have a parameter for political freedom and human right where there are many insurgency issues in the northeast. Northeast generally has poor infrastructure due to the terrain of mountains and also conflicts arising out of different ethnic and culture identities in the Northeast.

Let us have a look at the different parameters in Northeast:

The population in Northeast India is unevenly distributed with Assam having the Majority of the population. Infact Arunachal, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland were part of Assam at one time, hence Majority of the people in Northeast are from Assam. Population does have an effect in economic development as smaller population makes it easier for administration to reach to the population.

Urbanization Plays an important role in development index of a state. While NE as an average only has 27% , it has lower urbanization rate than the national average. Higher rate of urbanization tends to translate to better development and higher standards of living due to better chances of employment, better education and Healthcare.

A small state like Mizoram has the highest urbanization rate of 52% because of forced clustering of villages during the MNF Insurgency movement.

Urbanization rate does have a huge impact on development of a state. While Assam has the biggest population and biggest economy in the Northeast, it’s low urbanization rate does have an impact on per capita income as rural household tend to have lower income due to their engagement in agricultural practice. Meghalaya, also a relatively developed state also has low level of urbanization pulling down it’s average per capita income.

Mizoram has the highests rate of pucca and semi pucca houses at 78.53% , this is understandable as it has one of the highest urbanization rate in Northeast at 52%.

On the other hand Arunachal has the lowest rate of pucca and semi pucca houses at 38%, this could be attributed not only to it’s lower rate of urbanization but also due to the fact that it is one of the largest state in Northeast with an area of 83,743 km² with one of the lowest population density of 43 people per square meter.

Meghalaya has one of the highest per capita rate of electricity consumption, this could be due to the Presence of more Hydel Projects in the state as well as different Industries like Cement and Timber in the state which consume more power within the State. The Consumption of power in Assam is likely to be the most in Northeast but due to it’s large population, it’s per capita consumption of Electricity is lower. Arunachal Pradesh has a larger number of big dams which are completed. As Arunachal is a power surplus state, consumption of power could be higher within the state.

Again here, Mizoram has one of the highest rate of access to Electricity in spite of importing electricity from outside of the state. Mizoram has only 2 big Hydel Projects, namely Serlui B Hydel Project and Tuirial Hydel Project. The high rate of access to Electricity could be attributed to it’s high rate of of Urbanization. Assam also has the lowest Access to Electricity, this could be due to its larger population and lower rate of urbanization within the state. The situation post 2001 is likely to be improved in Arunachal and Tripura as new Hydel and Thermal Projects have been completed.

Manipur has the lowest infant Mortality rate, I am sure the date for the hill areas and plan area of Manipur would be different, with the plain areas of Manipur dominated by the Meitei are far more developed than the tribal areas in the hills surrounding Manipur. Manipur also has 2 Medical Colleges which could be the highest per person in the Northeast. In General , most of the babies in northeast are delivered in Primary Health Centre’s or Hospitals. The high rate of infant mortality rate of Meghalaya could be due to the low rate of urbanization and poverty in rural areas of the state.

Arunachal Pradesh has one of the highest hospital beds per lakh of population followed by Mizoram, this could be their relatively smaller population and better spread of Primary Healthcare Centers. Assam is at the bottom due to the large population and vast terrain of the state.

77.5 % of the households in Arunachal Pradesh have access to safe-drinking water, this could be due to the presence of abundant amount of rivers in the Northeast. Other Northeast states like Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya have lower access to drinking water because most of the small villages are situation at the top of hills or mountains and they have to travel to the nearest well for water source. Even the cities and towns of most Northeast face difficulty in water as water has to be pumped from the river in the valley to the top of the mountain and then distributed.

Northeast India has one of the highest average literacy rates in the Northeast. People from the Tribal Northeaster States like Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur tend to have a higher literacy and good English communication skills. This could be attributed to the Missionaries who came to Northeast and started schools in Northeast. Northeast in fact still has some of the best Schools and Colleges in the Country. Many from the Northeast are employed with the Hospitality industry due their good communication and social skills due to the good education institutions in the Northeast. However, Technical education facilities are limited in the Northeast.

Mizoram records the highest proportion of those above poverty line which is 80.53 percent of population. This could be because Mizoram is relatively homogenous with most of the people speaking or understanding Mizo language. The Presence of a Strong Church and NGO like YMA and TNT also helps. Mizoram is relatively free of slums or beggars even though poverty is there. This could be because most of the drug addicts, orphans , homeless are taken to private NGO Shelters or by Church run Charity Institution. Also strong Institutions like the YMA and the Church to a certain extent reduces the gap between the rich and poor by bringing people together resulting in some trickle down effect.

Meghalaya, despite having a relatively advanced state Capital, Shillong. It's rural areas in Garo hills and Jaintia hills have poor infrastructure in terms of healthcare and education facilities with social issues like alcoholism and gambling in the rural areas which could be a contributor to the lower level of people above poverty line. The rural urban gap in some of the states like Meghalaya is quite big.

Per capita income is unevenly distributed across the state. Arunachal Pradesh has one of the highest per capita income in the Northeast besides having a low rate of urbanization, this could be due to higher proportion of people involved in Government service considering it’s low population. Even Mizoram has a high proportion of people involved in service, with no major industries in Mizoram, this also can be attributed to higher proportion of people involved in Government service considering it’s lower population. While having a high per capita income due to high proportion of people involved in Government service seems like a good thing, it could have an impact on the state Finance if most of the Budget allocated for development goes towards payment of Wages, leaving a few amount as working capital.

Mizoram is still one of the more developed states in terms of Human development even though it’s infant mortality rate is high. The Northeast as a whole is full of hilly terrain and bad roads making development difficult. Also weak institutions and rampant corruption among local politicians does not help in lack of economic and social development. Compared to mainland states, Northeast has relatively lower infant mortality rates and better literacy resulting in good and smart workforce. The high rate of literacy could result in talented workforce which could be deployed in Healthcare, Information Technology and Tourism. More effort could be taken by local state governments to have Investment by big corporates not only in Infrastructure but also IT , Healthcare, Education and Tourism Industries so that it will not only provide employment but also boost the Northeast Economy.

Socio-economic cost of COVID-19 to the Northeast involved in unorganized sector in metropolitan cities

The Covid-19 is a double nightmare to those working in the organized sector. Now, it’s not only the Corona virus that they are worried about, they also fear about their wages, fear about their ability to pay their rent and then fear the Covid-19. The Northeast people working in different cities of India are in a precarious situation, they cannot go back to their own states due to shutdown of the Railways and Airport, add to that they are living in crowded areas with poor sanitation which is a breeding ground for other infectious disease like Dengue, TB and Cholera.

Covid-19 has been brought to India by the privileged class into India, the people who can afford to travel on international flights to foreign country, and when they come back to India, due to the inherent inequality and corruption in the country, some of them do not undergo the mandatory quarantine period which is required for everyone. Unfortunately in a country like India where the Political Class, The Bureaucrats and the other VIPS are exempted from mandatory checks or are let off for petty traffic violations, Covid-19 does not distinguish the rich and poor, the VIP and the non VIPs and infects everyone but the quarantine is a different story for the rich and salaried class. While it is a long paid holiday to enjoy and watch movies at home for some, for those in the unorganized sector, it is a nightmare.

For many of the northeast citizens working in the big cities, social distancing is a distant dream, they live in cramped rooms sharing it with 2-3 others. Till the day before quarantine, they were still commuting on crowded trains and Buses with people distancing from where they were sitting or standing with suspicious looks as if they themselves were the corona. In some places, people spit on them saying there are the corona or are ridiculed and made fun of because their mongoloid features saying that they are Chinese and are the source of the virus. Some of them are told to vacate their rented homes because they have taken in some of their friends who are now unemployed because of the shut down in the restaurant or shop that they are working has closed. Their house owner is suspicious of anyone with a mongoloid feature.

On an average, they earn Rs. 10,000 per month working in Restaurants, Spa’s or Hotels. Now that there is a shutdown for 21 days, they are more vulnerable to deprivation of food and nutrition. They have to pay for their house Rent which will be around Rs. 5,000. It’s unlikely that they will be left with any money towards the end of the month. Their employers who are small time shop owners are also facing the brunt of the shutdown without revenue and payment of rent. Many of them are likely to get fired from their job or retained without any payment of wages for the period of lock down even though the Ministry of Labour and Employment has given an advisory to pay wages without any reduction and not to terminate any employees. It is even more difficult for northeast workers who are from outside the state where they are working because most of the cash and food benefits that are being given are given to only those who have ration cards.

Forget about social distancing, they cannot afford to buy mask, hand sanitizers with whatever money they have stretched to the limit to help them survive the 21 day lockdown. Some of them may borrow money from money lenders with high interest rates which will only make their financial situation worse. The Prime Minister has recently increased the price of Petrol , hopefully to create some fund for the poor affected during this crisis. Whatever funds that have been earmarked for supporting the needy must take into consideration those who are working outside of the state and must ensure that no one dies of hunger.

Activities which are likely to go Up:

Education: Education as we know it now is likely to change in the future. With the forced detention at home and learning at home. In the likely future home schooling could become more viable with different apps like coursera, byju and Khan Academy becoming more popular. It would soon not matter where you live or what prestigious school you went to, you could get good quality education from the best teachers through online education. Online education is becoming more and more popular across the world. The advent of online education and online content would enable even professors at Universities and colleges to devote more time to research rather than repeating same course materials.

Work from Home: The impact of Corona has forced many of us to use online cloud technology like google drive and communication apps like whatsapp, zoom and Skype to work from home. This would likely have a very long term impact in the way we work. Many of the IT/ ITES industry people will now find out how convinient working from home is and many choose to work from home in the future. Many of them could work from wherever they want, as long as there is good internet connectivity, yes, they can even work in Aizawl, Mizoram even if their head office is in Bangaluru. Meeting could be done over zoom and shared documents like google drive. This could lead to unexpected benefits even in government services in increased use of email and online services leading to more transparency and reduced manpower leading to quicker services.

Medical Care/ Geriatric care: Due to increased health awareness like hand washing, cleanliness and hygiene post Corona virus, life expectancy may increase which could lead to more old age homes and more geriatric care homes.

Telemedicine: Telemedicine via Satellite or Internet is likely to become more popular post Corona Virus, Patients would no longer have to visit long distances from Northeast cities like Shillong, Imphal or Aizawl to Metros like Delhi, Chennai or even Vellore. Instead the specialist Doctor will ask them to take certain test in their own cities and analyze their reports and meet them via video conferencing. In the near future, with improvement in technology, Doctors may be able to even operate on their patients using internet and specialized robots.

Activities which are likely to go down:

Traffic/ Transport: Due to the work from home culture, there could be less traffic, many of those working in office commute at least 2-3 hours a day commuting, this would save them a lot of time and would increase their productivity. Also increased use of Skype, Zoom or whatsapp would also reduce air travel and less use of cars.

Real Estate Price: Now a days, real estate traffic has really zoomed up and is not coming down. Real Estate prices could go down if more people choose to work from Home. They would not be saving a lot of money on high rental prices and commuting time by working near the Beach or Hill station of Aizawl or Shillong near their loved ones with money to spare for saving for their retirement.
The Economic impact of Corona and low buying capacity of consumers is also likely to burst the real estate bubble with lakhs of unoccupied apartments across all metros which remain unsold due to their unrealistic inflated price.

Retail: Due to fear of proximity, increase of internet use and also lower rates due to economy of scale of online retailers, this could lead to increased use of online retailer and less use of Shopping malls. This could lead to rise of more online retailers and logistics companies.

Entertainment: Due to fear of proximity and also in part due to lack of Choices, online Platforms like Netflix , Youtube and Hotstar could become more popular forms of Entertainment. For a ticket cost of 2 for a Movie, you can binge watch on endless number of movies and serials. This could lead to reduced use of Movie halls.

Print Media: Print Media and Magazine as we know it is likely to reduce or be gone in a few years time. Now due to Corona virus and fear of touch, Many newspapers and Magazines are out of circulation but no one is missing any important updates due to information on our mobile phones or Laptops. Moreover, unlike print media which decides what you read, online you can choose to read what you want to read. The Same with TV Channcels, now people are moving on to online streaming platforms like Spotify and Youtube where you can see or listen to what news you want to hear when and where you want it.

Worship: Worship in Churches, Mosques or Temples could change post Covid-19, more people could start attending Church services online from Home rather than go to Church.

These are just some assumptions but what is more important is that we keep in touch with our loved ones and move on. While Work from Home or online education maybe good, it’s important that once things come to normal, we have an important role to play to provide employment to many who were in Covid-19 quarantine. If you are going to travel, use the Taxi, Uber, Auto or Ola, those drivers have been unemployed for a long time. Go to the restaurants and give a big tip to the waiters, some of them have been on unpaid leave for a long time, they need all the tip that you can give. And finally go watch a movie, you are providing employment not only to the actor but also the movie Industry and most importantly, go back to your normal routine and Thank God that you have survived a Pandemic which you will be able to tell your grandchildren.

Greetings to the Church in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Hope we are all fine in the Corona virus crisis. Today we are facing another crisis in Chennai like the 2017 floods here, this too we shall overcome with the help of God.

Today I would like to share the difficulties that we faced during the flood in chennai in 2017 and how we came out of it taking the example of Job and how God will take care of us again in 2020.

In this time of Covid 2020, let us reflect on some of the difficulties and losses that we face:

Jobs:

Some of us may have lost our jobs or maybe on the verge of losing our jobs because of the economic downturn that we are going through right now. Those of you who are still going to office and working from home can consider yourself lucky. There are some who are fired from the job or on leave without pay for the next few weeks. They do not even know how they are going to pay their rent or how they are going to manage their food. Some of them are earning only around Rs 10,000, and with half the month’s pay on leave without pay may take home only around Rs 5,000 which they will have to pay for Rent leaving them with nothing for food but their Faith in God and

Fear

Some of us here watching this sermon are worried and fearful and in parannoia

Hoarding:

In america they are hoarding toilet paper, sanitizer and such and in some places in the world they are hoarding rice bags, and when I say hoarding, they are not hoarding 2-3 rice bags buy 6-12 bags of rice. It’s a crazy world that we live in right now, a dog eat dog world where some are hoarding all for themselves without leaving for neighbours while some are hoarding to sell it off at a higher rate taking advantage of the misfortune of other’s. What a world that we live in.

Finance

The stock market has never seen any kind of volatility as such which is seen before, it has nosedived based upon fear and has reached new record lows.

Depression

Many of us have been told to work from home and stay away from socializing. Some of us may have developed depression and fear in our daily lives but it’s important that we have the captian in control

In times of Difficulties, let us remember that:

1. The Pain and difficulties of the world are not going to disappear just because of our Faith in God.

Look at Job, he underwent all kind of trials and tribulations and even when his friends and yes, his wife told him to condemn God, He refused. He was steadfast and strong in his faith of God inspite of all the pain that he went through.

Job 1: 18,19

¹⁸While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, ¹⁹when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

⁹His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

¹⁰He replied, “You are talking like a foolish[a] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

In all this troubles and difficulties that we face, maybe a flood or Pandamic like cornavirus, are we going to panic and be fearful or are we going to be unwavering like Job and have strong faith in God. 2017 Flood, then Cyclone and now Corona next, are we going to be ready for other signs of God’s second coming? Have anyone of us lost our son’s , daughters or family members because of the Virus, if not then let’s be thankful to God for his mercy and protection.

2. When we face trouble, we will not know why we are facing that difficulty?

If we study the book of Job, we find that Job was a perfect and mature person, a person that even God was confident enough to let Satan tempt him. And the trial and tribulation that Job went through was very severe but he was still steadfast and unwavering in his faith of God even in the face of death.

Floods, Earthquakes and Plagues such as conoravirus does not discriminate rich and poor, or even rich an poor countries like in the case of the virus spreading across Asia, Europe and Africa. Let us remember that God never gives us trials and temptation that we cannot withstand. At the same time let us not judge others who are undergoing death and misfortune at this moment and say that they are reaping the outcome of their sins. Instead, let us continue to pray for them.

3. Let us learn to Praise God in our times of trouble and tribulation.

It’s easy on our part to be happy and thankful and say Praise to the Lord on our Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries, Christmas or New Year but it becomes difficult to praise God when we face trouble. Job was a great example, in spite of the difficulties and hardship that he faced, he was able to praise God.

Job was reassured and confident that God was protecting him and was assured of his Salvation through Christ, he was not afraid to sacrifice his life for God because he knew that God was going to return to take us back home. He has a strong faith in God.

Job 19:25- 27

²⁵I know that my redeemer^[a] lives,
    and that in the end he will stand on the earth.^[b]
²⁶And after my skin has been destroyed,
    yet^[c] in^[d] my flesh I will see God;
²⁷I myself will see him
    with my own eyes—I, and not another.

4. Trials, tribulations and Disasters brings us closer to God.

Job may not have known but because of the tribulations he went through God knew the kind of person he was. To purify Gold you need to smelt in fire. To get closer to God we have to purify ourselves through the difficulties that we God through life.

Let’s take a roll call of some of the famous names in Bible.

David – unfaithful with Bathsheba

Moses – killed that Egyptian

Jacob – Cheated Esau

But there were also those who saw God’s power and were near God but did not change.

1. Pharaoh – He saw all the miracles but his heart was not moved.

Let us choose whose side we are going to be?

Why Mizoram is developing economically in the Northeast due to it’s peace.

Mizoram is a relatively new state surrounded by much bigger and developed states with better infrastructure but some of the neighbouring states have not been able to progress as they should. One of the major reasons could be insurgency problems within the state. Insurgency in some of the northeast states have become a business with both the Army and the Underground benefitting from it. The underground extort money from the government and the public but they too have to pay the price for stalled economic growth as roads, schools, hospital and bridge constructions are stopped.

There has been very less investment by big corporates of India, even if incentives like tax breaks are given by the government. The blame for this is not only the underground but the politician & burecreaut corruption in addition to the extortion by underground elements. This leads to shoddy and poor quality of construction. Pumping in money into Northeast to boost up the economy is not a solutions in itself as Institutions to monitor and check have to develop too. Though far from perfect, here are a few of the reasons for Mizoram’s success in troubled Northeast

1. Christian Missionaries

While the British Colonial powers were seen as distant and dictatorial in most of the plain kingdoms, there was a struggle for power. The Government was hardly involved in social life of the people, this could have been due to the developed system of literacy, governance that had devoped in kingdoms of Assam, Manipur or Tripura. But in a state like Mizoram, the British had no real economic interest to annexe Mizoram other than to prevent the raid on tea gardens by the Mizo chief’s. Hence, after Mizoram was taken control of by the British, they outsourced most of the day to day administration to the Mizo Chiefs. It also helped that the Missionaries converted most of the animist in Mizoram to Christianity enhancing the legitimacy of the white man whereas in most of the plain kingdoms they already had a well established Hindu religon. The social change brought about the missionaries played a key role in co-operation with Administration of the Colonial power.

2. Use of common language and culture across the state

The people of Mizoram tend to speak a common language, the Mizo and many of the other tribes in the state like the Hmar, Mara, Chakma etc also know the Mizo language. It also helps that Mizoram is not polarized on caste system basis as there is no caste and also no poliarization along religious lines as most of them are Christians. Ethnic mobilization based on language is not actively encouraged hence the etnic tribe polarization even though also present within the state is not as severe as other mountain tribe states within the Northeast. It remains to be seen how this could play out in the long run as some of the Main stream National parties have tried to polarize vote banks based on religon and language.

3. Use of Social organizations for Harmony

The perceptions for an outsider to Mizoram would be that the Politicial power at hand is the numero uno power in the state but that’s far from truth. The Young Mizo Association - a non political non denominational social plays a vital role in the state along with the Mizoram Kohran Hruaitu committee – A Mizoram Church leaders Association. It would be difficult, if not impossible to go against the tide of YMA and Church leader’s advisory, almost tantamount to political suicide, if politicians went against the diktat of these two powerful organization. But these two organizations which binds the Mizo Society together have played a key role in the state, including the peaceful return of MNF back from Insurgency. The two big social organization serve as a moral compass for the society to ensure that policy decisions are fair and that rampant misuse of power is in control.

Lessons for Mizoram from Bangladesh

Bangladesh for long has had an image of a basket case country of a very poor overpopulated country bursting on the seams, we the people on the border of Bangladesh in Mizoram are terrifiied of assimilation by the burgeoning Bangladeshi population of over 16 crore coming over to India due to economic migration but that may not be the case any longer as Bangladesh economy has picked up and set to clock double digit growth in the next five years.

It’s sad that the politicians in Mizoram through their myopic vision for the future of Mizoram cannot plan any development beyond Agriculture be it the MNF with it’s SEDP or the Congress with it’s NLUP, it could be due to the fact that the majority of the people in Mizoram are farmers. Mizoram has over 90% literacy and the young people of Mizoram are not excited at the prospect of growing rice at the steep slopes of Mizoram, unsuitable and hardly ideal for growing rice or any sort of agricutlure.

Instead of the vision of Mizoram politicians of everyone being involved in agriculture, I would suggest that in this world of globalization, we the Mizo people can plan on specialization. Bangladesh in the last couple of decades has emeraged as a key hub for footwear and apparel exports and employs more than 3.6 million people, more than half of whom are women. It’s a sad picture in Mizoram that almost all the educated youth in the state are looking for government jobs. There cannot be an economy where everyone is involved in government service, the economy would collapse, who would contribute to the taxes?

With the mizo love for fashion and footwear, it could be an ideal platform for employment generation within the state. To promote this apparel industry which requires a lot of water and power, Mizoram could entice industrialist to invest in the state by providing suitable land at subsidized rates, convince the Industrialist of the abundance of water and power in the state due to hydel projects within the state and reduce tariff’s for atleast the first 5 years.

It’s time for Mizoram to jump from the Agro based economy to the global value chain (GVCs) of the world. GVC’s are important development in cross border trade. We could transport our goods to China via Myanmar or to the rest of the world through Chittagong port via Bangladesh. It’s of the outmost importance that we hammer to the head of our policy makers that instead of trying to be self reliant in only agriculture, we try to be a cog in the global chain of good and specialize in a niche industry as our population is small. The inputs can be from anywhere in the world but the assembly could be done in Mizoram at a lower cost due to low cost of labour.

Instead of the Mizoram government trying to promote civil service among the youth, it would be more beneficial for them to concentrate on skill development training instittutes for the general population. The IAS or IPS are the cream of the society and not everyone can aspire for it just by dint of hard work, it also requires hi IQ which is not had by everyone and can be achieved by only about 1% of the popoulation. What Mizoram really needs is to take advantage of it’s literacy and train low skilled workers who can work in the manufacturing industry like fashion or service sector like tourism instead of graduation degrees in the arts field for which there is no more demand.

To promote such employment, the government would not only have to lower tariffs but also invite Industrialist to come and invest in Mizoram. For this to happen, not only the Government but the NGO’s in Mizoram like the MZP would have to open their minds and see the benefit’s that the industrialist would bring to the state not only with their capital but also the employment boost to the state. You cannot expect the local people of Mizoram to have the same level of expertise, skill, global marketing linkage and capital as the Industrialist Investor’s and if we are going to wait for the local peole to match up to these Investor’s, it would be either a very long wait or never ending wait for development of the state.

For the Industrialist to Invest in the state, Mizoram has to not only promote it’s cheap and skilled labor but also promote it’s advantage as a logistical hub with close connection to ASEAN countries via Myanmar and Transport of goods to Bangladesh and make use of it’s ports for easier logistics. The Central and state government should expedite the Kalasan Multi Modal Transit Transport project and the Tlabung border trade with Bangladesh.

On the global side, it’s important for the state and Indian politicians to take advantage of the hostility and uneasy trade relationsn betweent he US and Chinda. They are placing trade restrictions on each other which Bangladesh and Vietnam has taken advantage of. Mizoram, as a state of India should take advantage of this opportunities and bring in more GVC’s to Mizoram to invest within the state. Bangladesh has a already surprassed Pakistan in terms of per capita GDP and is set to surprass India’s GDP too at this rate, it would be our loss to ignore this lessons for Mizoram.

Travelling by Tata Sumo – Aizawl to Guwahati Tata Sumo’s for those who are not familiar with are Big SUV like trucks wide enough to seat 4 adults side by side in a cramped position which is a very popular mode of transport in Northeast India. In Mizoram it has all but replaced the State transport service in most of the Sectors. Travelling in a sumo has always been an adventure in itself with the sound of Tata Sumo more like the roaring of a truck and the inside more like a cramped minivan. These Sumo’s are driven by skilled driver’s and on long distance journeys like Aizawl to Guwahati there are two driver’s who take turns driving the sumo. As the Sumo drives out of the city traffic towards the outskirts of the city, the Sumo comes to a stop in one of the prayer stops where one of the passenger earnestly prays to the almighty that all will reach their destination in one peisce. Once the other passengers have emptied their full bladders, the journey continues until the the sumo usually stops somewhere like Bilkhawthlir where you can eat freshly steamed rice, hot roasted beef or pork with boiled vegetables and spicy hot fermented salad on one of the many restaurants dotting the highway. The passengers like us who had been crampedly packed four a side had by this time settled into our seats without having to slide in our seats amongst the many curves on the road and getting comfortable with the other passengers passing jokes and maybe talking about the latest political developments. Alcohol prohibition being one of the hottest topics. The sumo’s wait for each other near Vairengte, the last border town of Mizoram and form a long convoy of almost 30 sumo’s travelling along silchar’s potholed roads cautiously as there have been instances of roberry and event attempt to harm passengers in the past. Even if one of the sumo’s have an engine problem or a flat tyre, all the sumo’s gather and wait till the problem is resolved and move together till they reach the Meghalaya border from where they speed on upwards towards the Pine trees of Meghalaya, the hot and humid air slowly becoming cold fresh air. The sumo’s eventually descent to Guwahati by taking the beautiful winding roads of Shillong bypass, stopping in the bridge overlooking Barapani for a last stop before Guwahati. Now that the highway between shillong and Guwahati is four laned, hardly any vehicles stop in Nongpoh, the halfway stop between Guwahati and Shillong anymore. Aizawl’s bazaar or Dawrpui is a must stop visit for most visitors coming to Aizawl for a visit, but I consider it lucky to consider it as a second home because my grandparents also reside in the hustling and bustling center of the Bazaar. I usually make it a point to go all around the Market soaking in the sights and sounds of the market. Mizoram being sandwiched between Burma and Bangladesh get’s goods in it’s market not only from mainland India but from Myanmar, China and Bangladesh. I usually start my tour by going down the step’s of Zion street and get reminded of the time when those step’s were all slippery stones. You know that you’re in the market when you can hear the soulful beat’s of some old 80’s rock star like Bryan adams “Please forgive me” belting out from hawker and as you go down further other old Mizo and Mizo Gospel tunes being soulfully sung by blind beggars with small amplifier seated besides them. As you enter further inside the market, you see rows of shops some selling only shoes, shirts, toys and vegetables all around, all neatly stacked and women sitting around gossiping among themselves. The wares are all neatly stacked and also notice that most of the people are conscious of their cleanliness from their clean feet but then you also smell the floating smell of tobacco, the statistic’s speak for themselves, Mizoram has one of the highest rates of Cancer due to tobacco. I usually go to the building where they sell khukri’s, hunting knife and fancy keychains. Most of the shopkeepers in Dawrpuui or the main market as it is known are helpful and supportive when you ask them about their wares but they are never pushy and call you back offering a lower price unlike the big bazaar’s in India. I usually end my visit by ducking into one of the simple restaurant’s on the side of the market by ordering Artui chhipchhuan which is dry noodles with sunnyside up egg on top and accompanied by beef noodles and some other spicy paste. Sampiau, a rice porride mixed with meat & yummy mizo spices is another of my favourites. Having a fresh, hot and warm food with a view of the steep and narrow winding street’s of Aizawl is all that you can ask for.

Aizawl bylanes and Roads

There has been some small changes in the streets of Aizawl. Road which were once rutted by jeep wheels which would turn muddy and slushy have been replaced by pavement bricks and concrete road in the narrow bylanes of Aizawl. The roads are so steep that when you drive downwards that I sometimes I feel I have to swallow my heart. Upwards on the steep slope when I am driving a car or jeep and struck in a upward slope traffic jam with the smell of petrol and burnt tyre due to the friction of the tyre hitting my nostrils I have to orchestrate my legs in such a way that the break pedal is pressed to ensure that the vehicle is not moving backwards at the same time pressing on the clutch and putting the gear at first gear, press the clutch, releasing the brake and inching ahead a few feets at a time, while at the same time ensuring that the wheels of the car don't go off the road in the precariously steep slope going down to the valley several hundred metres below with no barrier to block your car in case of a brake fail. On a two wheeler which is only around 100 cc, I drove up the chandmary west graveyard area and it was so steep uphill that I had to get off the scooter, pull the accelerator at maximum throttle and push it upwards, the steepness of the slope is to be seen to be believed. During the monsoon, even after the rain the slope was so steep that some bikes had fallen of which i felt was justified and not the fault of the driver. In all the steepness of the road, the driver's and people of Aizawl deserve praise for the calm demeanor with which they take all the harsh and difficult conditions which many drivers and passengers in other parts of the world would fear to tread. #Aizawl #loveaizawl #aizawldiaries @ Aizawl

Travel Shillong to Aizawl

My earliest memories of travel between Shillong and Aizawl are embedded in my memory. My fondest would have been travelling on the back of an open jeep all the way to Mizoram, from the cold air and fresh pine tree smells in Meghalaya to the Hot and sultry humid climate in Silchar to the cooler climate in Aizawl. There were also the days when we used to travel by Capital travels where you had to change your bus in Silchar in the morning and go by another bus. I cannot forget to mention the landslides in sonapur, I remember spending one endless humid night in sonapur due to a landslide, fortunately for now there is a tunnel running through it. The foods also varied as your travelled through the three states. From the red rice, jadoh and yummy chicken gravy in meghalaya to the slender long fried potatoes, fish or chicken with sliced onions and chillie in Sonapur or Silchar to the Mizo food with bai, roasted beef or pork along the way.

The road from Silchar to Aizawl meanders along slowly up to Vairengte with lots of twists and turns. The road gruadually getting smaller if you go through Zanlawn road, the tombstones on the side of the road remind you how dangerous it can be if you are unlucky. I do remember travelling on those long buses on those narrow roads and dangling up in the air with no road below if you were sitting in the back rows of those long buses. The air gradually cools down and you can see the cloud and the mist covering durtlang, making it look like a mysterious mountain which could bring you any surprise.

It has been from my earliest childhood memories that I have cherished Laitumkhrah, there’s something special about it, maybe it’s a mix of a lot of things, the cold fresh air, the cosmopolitian mix of people everywhere, you can literally hear the sound of almost every tribe in Northeast as you walk down laitumkhrah, the swishy café’s, restaurants and eat outs – everything from coffee cafee to naga food to local khasi food, it has them all, also must mention, just by walking down the streets of Laitumkhrah, you can feel the pulse of fashion of the Northeast youth, the way they dress. I am sure no city in India would be able to match up to the fashionable youth who are always updated with the latest trends around the world. Last by not to forget, you can hear the floating sound of the latest and old rock and pop sounds in and around Laitumkharh. And peple here are seriously into their rock music, from the Truck driver’s handyman, taxi driver, college going youth to the current chief Minister of Meghalaya.

It has been more than 20 years travelling by train. Travelling by train from Tambaram to Guwahati has been an unregretable experience. I still remember travelling all the way from Guwahati to Pune for 3 days on sleeper in the middle of summer. It was so hot that we used to cover ourselves with wet towel which would dry again, sometimes have a bath in the cramped train toilet.

Now circumstances have changed a bit in that I am travelling in 2^nd AC and not sleeper but sadly most of the remnants of Indian railways remain the same and there is hardly any progress save for the bio toilet, earlier when you defecated, you could literally see your shit on the railway tracks and train stations used to smell. That’s a bit better now. But reading and looking around the world, it’s a far world from the Chinese and Japanese trains which are neat, spic and span and travel at 200-300 kilometers per hour.

The only saving grace of this train journey has been the beautiful farmlands you fly pass by, it’s much drier in the south and gets more lush towards West Bengal and Assam. Sadly, you don’t see much progress in the villages and towns that you fly pass by. They seem to be entombed in some time machine still backward, as you near a town or a village you can see the slums and also can see that open defecation is practiced openly everywhere. I don’t understand how our government can claim to be open defecation free. As with the big cities, scan regard is given to the environment and sewage mixes with industrial affluent flowing into the river. India maybe a developing country aspiring to be a developed country but it cannot ignore it’s environment, ignoring the environmental issues is akin to shooting onself. India’s software prowess is not having an impact on the agricultural poor, It’s time the government put’s more stress on using software and technology in increasing agricultural produce , most of the farmlands are still made using bullock cart and cows. This would increase the agricultural output. India’s population growth, especially in the northern part of India has to be controlled by family controlling or else there will soon be a point where there is not enough agricultural produce to feed the people.
