Cyrus Wells - From Canada to New Mexico by way of Vermont, New Hampshire and Kansas

One of my Vermont ancestors was Cyrus Wells, the son of William Wells (1794 - 1855) and Martha Myrick (1798 - ?). They were from New Hampshire, but settled in Canada by the time Cyrus was born. He had at least four sisters ( Sarah, Mary A., Caroline Calista, and Helen Naomi) and one brother (C.J.Stuart Wells) I know he was born December 22, 1817 in Hatley, Canada, when his dad was 23 and his mother only 19. His Great-grandfather Ezra Merrick was in the American Revolution, and died at Fort Ticonderoga in 1777.

When Cyrus Wells was 22, he married Susan Garvin in Charlotte, Chittenden County, VT on March 3 1839. They would eventually have 10 children, perhaps more.

Marion Missouri Wells their first child was my ancestor, born July 17, 1840 in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, NY. They must have lived there for a while as their first son, Marshall William Wells was born there as well on May 7 1843. In 1847, their son Eugene Charles Wells was born March 24 in St Armand, Canada East. Caroline Melissa Wells was also born in St Armand, Canada East on June 16, 1848.

Their next child, Paulina Mary Wells, was born Sept 16, 1850 in Essex, Chittenden County, VT. This is the town where Susan's parents lived, and Cyrus and Susan show up in the 1850 census there. The US census lists another child, Helen Wells, age 3. I am not sure where or when she was born as I have no other birth information on her. Cyrus is listed as a Cloth Manufacturer. In the 1900 Census Cyrus states he did not immigrate to the United States until 1859, perhaps in 1850 they weren't living permanently in Vermont yet. In the 1851 Canadian Census there is a Cyrus Wells listed in St Armand Quebec, which could indeed be our Cyrus.

The next three children are recorded as being born in St Armand, Canada East. Byron Edwards Wells was born on Oct 24, 1853; Genieveve Wells on April 13 1855; and Susie Wells on 10 Dec 1856. Their last child I know of is Harriet Abigail Wells, born September 17 1860 in Waterville, Lamoille County, Vermont. They are also found in the 1860 Federal Census living there. By this time, Marion had married William B Smith, and they were living with her parents at that time.

Another newspaper clipping from July 27, 1869 that gives a glimpse of Cyrus's life - The railroad was apparently coming to Waterville, and Cyrus was renovating an large factory which furnished water power for the town. He intended to start manufacturing flannels as soon as the times allowed it. - So apparently Cyrus was still involved in cloth manufacturing 20 years later. In 1870 Census the family is still living in Waterville although Marion and William are not listed as living with Cyrus and Susan anymore.

In the 1880 Census records we find Cyrus & Susan are living in Kinsley, Edwards, Kansas with their son Byron and his wife Sarah. Cyrus' occupation is listed as Coal Mining. He must have been on the move, as he was also listed in the 1880 census as a Mine Broker, living by himself in Los Cerillos, Santa Fe, New Mexico. (Remember at this time New Mexico is a territory, not a state.) August 24, 1888 Cyrus Wells was elected postmaster in Turquesa, New Mexico until May 12 1899.

Cyrus is mentioned in the St. Johnsbury Vt, Caledonian paper, even though he has moved away. 3 April 1890.

His wife Susan Garvin Wells, daughter of Thomas Garvin and Abigail Warren, dies July 15th, 1891 after a long illness. Their daughter Helen Wells Wilson nursed her mother through that illness and continued to live there after her mother passed away.

Helen and her father Cyrus are in the 1900 census living in Cerrillos, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Cyrus is listed once again as a manufacturer, widowed, born December of 1817, and says he immigrated in 1859. Cyrus died shortly thereafter on Oct 30th, 1901. Cyrus & Susan are buried in unmarked graves in Los Cerrilos.

Captain Joseph Dyckman

Joseph Dyckman (also spelled Dikeman and Dykeman) is the ancestor that solved the mystery that started my quest into my family tree. Quite young, I was fascinated that my Grandmother on one side of the family and my Grandfather on the other had the same last name. I wanted to know just how they were related, and it took some time to find the answer- they are distant cousins.

Joseph Dyckman was born about 1737 in Fairfield County, Connecticut, to Frederick Dyckman and his wife Ann, being the oldest child. His known siblings are Thaddeus, Levi, Mary, and Ann. Unfortunately the records for this time period are very sparse so we don’t know for sure how many siblings Joseph may have had nor much of his early life.

We do know from the records in Redding, Fairfield County, CT that he was married to Eunice Darling on My 25 1757 by Reverend Nathaniel Bartlett. Their Children included Hezekiah, Benjamin, Joseph, Sally, Arron, Peter, Ezra, and Eunice, who were baptized in Redding, Connecticut. He also married Elizabeth Smith and Miss Judd. His other known children were Elizabeth, Daniel, Abigail, Ruhama, Phebe, and Ann, but their mother is unidentified.

Joseph and at least three of his sons (Joseph, Hezekiah, and Benjamin) served in the American Revolution. As Lieutenant he brought in three conspirators, and as Captain he collected seven pounds eight shillings for bringing prisoners. Joseph is a recognized Patriot for the DAR, so anyone who descendants from him qualifies for the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Benjamin Dikeman - Dyckman - Dykeman - Dykman

Benjamin Dikeman is one of my Revolutionary War ancestors, and since names and dates don't tell half the story, I thought I'd tell you a little bit about him.

Benjamin was one of 14 children born to Joseph Dikeman (abt 1737 - 1822)  and Eunice Darling (Jan 25 1736 - death unknown). The others were Ann, Phebe, Hezekiah, Joseph, Sally, Aaron, Peter, Ezra, Eunice, Elizabeth, Daniel, Abigail, and Ruhama. Benjamin was born the 24th of May in 1761, in Redding, Connecticut and died 8 April 1845. Three of those sons were ancestors of mine, of them, Benjamin was the second son and fourth child in the family.

Benjamin enlisted 1781 in the Dutchess County Militia, and is listed as belonging to the company commanded by Captains Williams & Dykeman (his father) In his pension application, he mentions his three sons, 2 which are wealthy farmers and the other a cattle dealer and butcher.

Benjamin Dyckman Married Huldah Kelly in Patterson, Putnam County, NY, daughter of Jonathan Kelly and Priscilla King. Benjamin & Huldah had four children that we know of, some sources say there were more children that died young:

Isaac Dykman was born 29 Dec 1788 in Dutchess County, NY and died Jan 16 1872 in Putnam County, NY. (note: Putnam County was created from southern Dutchess County in 1812) Isaac married Polly Wood on 18 Sept 1808, and they had a family of six children - Jane, James, Eunice, Mary, George, and Emma.  Polly was Born Nov 19 1778 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT and died Sept 14, 1867 in Patterson, Putnam County, NY. In 1850 he is listed as a farmer.

  Ezra Dykeman was born Dec 13, 1771 in Dutchess County, NY and died Sept 29, 1857. He married Keturah Ellis who was born June 27, 1797and died Dec 9 1878. According to His brother Isaac's will, he had three daughters Martha, Emily, and Eliza. He was a farmer. He was most likely named after his uncle Ezra Dyckman, Joseph's Brother, who died in 1771.

Priscilla Dykeman was born about 1792. She was most likely named after her grandmother, Priscilla King Kelly.She married James Baker.

Benjamin Dykeman, (the younger) was born 1796 in Dutchess County, NY and died July 28, 1860. Benjamin married a woman named Asenath who was born 21 July 1790 and died 9 Dec 1873. They had a family of seven children - Beulah, Mary Elizabeth, Albert, Huldah, Sarah, Isaac, & Charles. In the 1850 census Benjamin was listed as a butcher.

Benjamin's son Isaac had a daughter, Emma C. Dykeman. That daughter married her second cousin, Daniel W. Dykeman. But then, thats another story for another day...

Arthur M Ballard

When Arthur Mortimer Ballard was born on February 13, 1873, in Danbury, Connecticut, his father, Cyrus B. Ballard, was 27 and his mother, Sarah Lewis, was 25. Arthur had an older sister, Fanny Deroselle Ballard. His Father Cyrus was listed as Store clerk in the census just three years before and his mother as Keeping House. They lived in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

In 1880, Arthur and his family are still living in Danbury, Connecticut. His father Cyrus is a Dry goods Clerk, born in Connecticut just like Arthur and Fanny. Sarah is listed as born in NY. His sister Fanny Marries Ferris Morehouse in 1888 in Connecticut and has a daughter Mildred in 1898.

On the 11^th of October 1899, Arthur is married to Carrie E Harrison by the Methodist minister, Rev Stratton in Brewster, Putnam County, New York where Carrie lives with her parents Josephine Hoyt and Henry F Harrison. In 1900, Carrie and Arthur are living on east 136^th street in the Bronx. Arthur is listed as a Bookkeeper.

In 1905, Carrie and Arthur have a daughter, Helen Jessamine Ballard, Born 28^th of September in Williamsbridge, Bronx, New York. Arthurs sister Fanny marries for the second time to Arthur Borden who lives in Washington D.C. and has a daughter Laura in April of 1909.

In 1910, the census finds Arthur, His wife Carolyn, and daughter Helen all living in Manhattan, New York. Arthur is working as a cashier in a hotel. In 1915 Arthur, Caroline and Helen are living at 151^st street west in Manhattan.

Arthur registers for the draft on Sept 12, 1918 describing himself as Medium height and build, with brown eyes and black hair. He is a bookkeeper and cashier at the Hotel Endicott and lists his wife Caroline Ballard as his nearest relative, living with him at 122 West 88^th street in NY.

In 1920, Arthur and Caroline are still living at west 88^th street and they have a houseful. Arthur (46), Carolyne (41) and Helen (14) are all living together along with Carolyne’s parents Josephine (63) and Henry F Harrison (65). Also living with them is Arthur’s cousin, Robert Bennett (63).

In Jan 1923, Arthur’s Father Cyrus Passes away in Washington D.C. Arthur and Carrie’s Daughter Helen marries Harold H Dykeman on 9 May 1924 in New York city and has a son Robert in April of 1925. In August of 1927, Arthurs Mother Sarah Lewis Ballard dies in Washington D.C. where his sister Fanny is living.

Arthur and Carrie Get divorced, and Arthur remarries on the 14th of April, 1928 to Mary Lewis Lee as her second husband. Arthurs daughter Helen has a daughter Lois in 1929. Shortly afterwards, his first wife Carrie remarries to Arthur’s cousin Robert Bennet. In 1930 Carrie and Robert are living in New Jersey.

In 1930, Arthur and his new wife, Mary are living at 25 Prospect street in New Richelle, Westchester county, NY. Arthur is working as an undertaker. In 1938, Arthur is the undertaker at the Ballard Funeral Home which has moved to 2 Maple Avenue in White Plains, NY.

BY 1940, Arthur, Mary and their maid Prudence Shepp are living in White Plains. About this time, Arthur acquires a partner in the funeral Home, George Durand. In July of 1943, Arthur’s last Grandchild is born, Ralph Dykeman. In 1948, Arthur’s grandson Robert marries Lucy Ryea and in 1949, his granddaughter Lois marries Clifford Ryea Jr.

On 5 June 1951, Arthur Mortimer Ballard dies of a heart attack. Arthurs second wife Mary dies in 1961, and his first wife Carrie dies in 1965. Arthur’s business, the Ballard – Durand Funeral Home in White Plains, NY is still active today in 2020.

John Edward Ryea

Some three months after the end of the Civil War, John Edward Ryea was born on August 3 1865. His birth record states he was born to Peter Ryeau, A Day Laborer from Canada East and Mary Young, born 21 years ago in Canada East and now living in Fairfield, Franklin County VT.

John is the fourth known child of Peter Ryea and Mary Gero (dit Young), a family that grew to have at least eight Boys - Lewis, Peter, John, Andrew, Etienne (Aiken), Frank, Henry, and Joseph and two Girls Julia and Mathilda.

His Ryea family is still in Fairfield, Franklin County Vt in the 1870 Census, and he is listed as 5 years old and the second child they have that was born in Vermont. His older siblings, Lewis, Julia and Peter were all born in Canada as were his parents. Peter is listed as 28 and Mary 26. Both parents are marked as cannot read, cannot write.

By 1880, the family is living in Richford, Franklin County, VT. All the children are living with their folks – Peter is listed as 42, Mary as 30. John is listed as 14, and all but the smallest children are listed as cannot read and cannot write. Their last name is given as Ryer, but that could be the result of careless writing of the census taker. Peter the father along with Louis, Peter Jr, and John are all listed as Laborers.

On September 8, 1888, John Royea, a laborer, 22 years old marries Etta Smith, 21 in Berkshire, VT. His given place of birth is St. Albans, VT, son of Mary Geraw and Peter Royea. Etta is 21, born in Barre, Vt and the daughter of William Smith and Marrion Wells.

John and Etta settle in Franklin County, VT and begin their own family. Berney is born in March of 1889 but dies in August of 1890. Marion is born in October of 1890, Edward in August of 1893 and then Lula on Oct 1895. Lula sadly dies less than a year old. Lillian is born in January of 1897, and Cyrus in Jun of 1899. Cyrus also dies before being a year old.

In the 1900 Census, John is listed with his family in Berkshire, Franklin County Vermont in a rented home. His birthday is listed as July of 1865, 34 years old, married 11 years, a Farm Laborer who cannot read or write but he can speak English. His wife Etta is 32, born in September of 1867, with 6 children born but only 3 living - Marian, Edward and Lillian. She is also listed as being able to read and wrote and speak English.

Next door on the 1900 census is listed his parents, Peter 64 and Mary 60. No month or year is given for their births, which seems to indicate that they did not know when they were born. They were married for 45 years, and mary had had 12 children but only 10 alive at that time. Peter is listed as immigrating in 1849, and had naturalized but records confirming these facts have ever been found. Peter and Mary are listed as not able to read or write, but can speak English. Joseph, Frank and Henry with his family are all living with them.

Later in 1900, Etta and John Have a daughter Lena who lives for 2 years and then dies of Tuberculosis. John’s Brother Henry also dies in 1902 of the same disease. On the 28th of August in 1904, Etta Smith (37) and John Ryea (40) have a son, Clifford Ray Ryea, their 9th child and my great-grandfather. Ethel is born in September of 1906 and Frank in June of 1909.

In 1910 on the Bakersfield, Vt Census, John is 45, married 22 years, Rents a farm, is listed as a famer, cannot read or write. Etta is 42, and has had 11 children, 6 of which are living. She can read and write. Their daughter Marion and her husband Frank Dunham were living with them as well as Edward, Lillian, Cliffford, Ethel and Frank.

In 1912, Johns father, and then his mother both pass away. They had been living with their daughter Julia, who was married to Andrew Playful, in Franklin, Franklin, County, VT. In July of 1916, their son Frank dies of Pneumonia. Clifford Ryea was only twelve when this happens, but recalls it with sorrow more than 70 years later when I asked him about his family.

When World War One begins John and Etta’s son Edward enlists in the army and 1917 finds him in Virginia waiting for his transport overseas. A small item in the Burlington Free Press in 1918 states Edward is injured but gives no real indication how seriously. Edward returns from the war, alive but missing his arm. In 1920 he marries Bessie Bartlett.

In 1920 John and Mary are still living in Bakersfield, Franklin County Vermont with Edward, Ethel and Clifford in their home. In 1923 Clifford leaves Vt for NY. In his later years he would say he “left VT to marry a rich girl”.

In 1925 he married Isabel Osborn and in 1926 had a son, also named Clifford and in 1929 they are blessed with a daughter Lucy Etta. They lived in Pawling, NY their entire married life. Clifford married again after Isabel died, living then in Putnam county, NY.

By 1930 John aged 64 and Etta aged 63 are living home alone, still in Bakersfield. John is listed as unable to read or write, apparently, he never gained those skills throughout his life. In 1940, They are listed as living next to their son Edward, his wife Bessie, and their son Frederick. Etta is listed as completing grade 8, and next to John is says 0, no school attended. However this time, John is shown as owning his home, worth $400.00. He is 74 and she is 72.

When John dies of a heart condition in 1942, his birth is listed as July 3 1965 with Parents Peter Ryea and Mary Geraw. His wife Etta Smith Ryea lives another 8 years, dying in September of 1950. She was described many years later by her granddaughter Lucy as being a gruff woman who smoked a corncob pipe. They are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield, VT.

Reverend Judson Dykeman and his desk

This Desk is a family heirloom, now residing in the home of the 3^rd Great-granddaughter of Rev Judson Dykeman. According to Family information, this is the desk Rev Judson Dykeman write his sermons at, and it predates 1867. As you can see, one of the legs must have broken over the years and been replaced by a plain leg, unlike the other three. Inside the desk has cubbyholes of ledgers and papers. We don’t know who made the desk, but we do know more about the life of Judson Dykeman.

Reverend Judson Dykeman was born July 10, 1805 to Peter Dykeman (1769-1840) and his first wife, Ruth Carle (1776-1815) in the Fredericksburg area of Dutchess County NY (now known as Patterson, Putnam County.)

He was the third son, and fourth child of Peter and Ruth. In March 1829, he married Corinda (Or Clorinda) Lee Smith, a widow with six children. (Abby Smith, Eunice Smith, Arvilla Smith, Joseph Smith, and the twins, Jacob Smith and Isaac Smith.) Judson and Corinda would have four children of their own: Charles Dykeman, Louisa Dykeman, Oscar Augustus Dykeman, and Ruth Ann Dykeman.

On Feb 13 1836, Judson Dykeman joined the Kent – Fishkill Baptist Church by letter. He was listed as living in Kent, Putnam County NY In the 1840 Census. In His home there were 2 males under the age of 9, 1 boy between the age of 10 and 14, and one man aged 30-39. There was one little girl under 5, one teen girl between the ages of 15-19, and one woman between the ages of 30-39. 7 people in all, with 2 of them engaged in the occupation of agriculture.

In 1843 the Baptistchurch of Christ at Kent and Fishkill (At Farmers Mills, Carmel, NY) gaveBrother Judson Dykeman license to preach the word. June 4, 1845 he was ordainedby request of the first Baptist Church of Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY. By 1850, only Judson, Clarinda, Charles, Oscar, Louisa, Ruth and Isaac were living in the house in Kent, Putnam County, NY.

In 1860 Judson is listed as a Baptist Clergyman in Kent, Putnam County, NY and Clorinda, Ruth, and Joseph Smith are living all in the home. By 1870, Ruth has moved out and just Joseph remains at home with his mother Clorinda and Stepfather Judson Dykeman.

In October of 1872 Clorinda Lee Smith Dykeman passes away at the age of 73. Her will is a lengthy document, setting aside money especially for Joseph Smith’s care, maintenance and support. From the will it seems he is simple minded, and will need someone to be a guardian for him for the whole of his life. Clorinda writes of all her children, alive and deceased, and her will is very emotional for a legal document. In 1873, Judson remarries to 45 year old Armilla White, daughter of Leman White. He passes away at the age of 70 in October 1875. Both Judson and Corinda are buried in the cemetery at the Kent - Baptist Church in Putnam County, NY.

Today we go online and google what we're looking for - and sure enough we'll find the information - and a whole lot of it may be questionable. Years ago, most newspapers had the information about what is going on in town. Sure some of it might not have the facts correct, or be an ad disguised as news - but oh the things there are to learn about the family in the newspaper.

Try looking for those missing facts in the paper of the day. Most my family tree comes from New York. NY is a state where getting information is difficult at best. I find much of my information in the local news columns of the past. Most often i use the search for "Firstname Lastname" with the quote marks included.

Try http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html which covers all of NY - an a little of other places. Read the FAQs section which is the link down at the bottom in the scrolling messages, it will assist you in the searching.

Or for those of us in the Hudson Valley, there is https://news.hrvh.org/ which is a smaller resource but seems to have different papers. Putnam County Courier used to be on its own website, but it has been added here and is much more searchable this way.

Any county in New York, can be searched at the NY Historic Newspapers website, and you can search one or multiple counties at the same time if you choose. Open each search result in a new tab here, which makes it easier to go back to your original search.

For a wider network, there is the Chronicling America website Which runs 1789 to 1963 all over the United States in various papers. The advanced search options here will give you better searches.

For other newspaper resources look at Cyndi'sList to see if there are better newspapers for your area of interest that are free. Ifyou're ready to pay for your searches, there are many susbscription services as well, like Newspapers.com.

Santa Clara Tree

The first year Henry and Velma were married, they took a honeymoon trip to California. After they were gone we found Velma's diary of the trip. Much later we found pictures.

On May 29 1925, (94 years ago) they were in the California State Redwood Park near Boulder Creek, CA. Velma writes "we walked down to the Santa Clara Tree which we were told was the only perfect tree in the park, the center not having been burnt. It was certainly a very perfect redwood tree."

I don't know what she had for a camera, but she took a picture that day of her new husband, Henry Dykeman in front of that perfect redwood tree.

Someday I hope to stand at the foot of this very same tree.

He was Inducted September 26 1917 in Dutchess county, NY.
He served Overseas from Jan 15, 1918 to June 18 1919.
He was in Company I 308 Infantry until October 27 1917, which was part of the 77th Division,
then MTC (Motor Transport Corps) 360 American Mission Reserve Mallet until Discharge June 25 1919 The Reserve Mallet was organized from members of the former American Field Service and were responsible for transport of equipment and ammunitions.

He owned a service station in Downtown Pawling. he was a member of both the Pawling Baptist Church and the Pawling Grange. Solomon died 27 July 1982 in Mount Kisco, Westchester county, NY. He is buried in the Pawling Cemetery, Dutchess county, NY.

Our Ryea family is frequently lost in the records, primarily because the name has been misspelled / spelled so many ways through the years. Our family also was not very literate the first few generations in the US, which has not helped tracking them. The Veterans - George Dykeman

George Raymond Dykeman born 17 Oct 1894 in Pawling, Dutchess County, NY to Peter and Effie K. Hooker Dykeman.

In the 4 Dec 1917 paper, The Poughkeepsie Enterprise has George on a list of drafted men who were leaving tomorrow.

He was Inducted Dec 5 1917 in Millbrook, NY and started at Camp Upton. He served Overseas from April 16, 1918 to April 18 1919. He was in Company A 305 Infantry, then the Machine Gun company 305 Infantry until Discharge, which was May 9 1919.

The 305th was Part of the 77th Division, which has also been called "New York's own" as the men it included were primarily from NY city and the surrounding counties.The 77th Infantry Division was the first United States Army division to arrive in France in World War I.

The division began leaving Camp Upton on March 28, 1918, and sailed from Boston, Portland (Maine), via Halifax and New York City. With the exception of the artillery, all units proceeded through Liverpool, across England and landed at Calais, France.

Also a Truck Driver with the Coleman Lumber company. he was a member of both the Pawling Baptist Church and the Pawling Grange. George died June 11 1979 in Pawling, NY

The Veterans - Lester A Cornell

Lester Cornell, born Nov 20 1889 in Amawalk, Westchester county, New York to Joshua Cornell and Alice Cornell. Inducted May 25 1918 in Westchester County, NY.

Served overseas from June 1918 to June 1919. Co H 2nd Pioneer Infantry, Then HQ Company 2 Pioneer Infantry, then 207 MP until discharge.

The 2nd Pioneer Infantry went overseas to France prior to the 1st Pioneer Infantry.The 2nd landed at Bordeaux and from there went to Bassens, in the Gironde to become acclimated and readied for service at the front.

Some Companies were put into service acting as guards and military police from the time of their arrival in various French cities. In many cases, this MP service continued the entire time they were overseas.

Other companies of the 2nd Pioneer Infantry had the job of building roads through the thickly forested terrain, salvaging ammunition from burnt-out trucks and abandoned artillery positions and helping bring supplies forward.

Until we find Lester's full military record we do not know what service Lester actually did or what action he may have seen. Lester returned home in the summer of 1919, and returned to his life as a carpenter. In 1923, he married Florence Purdy and they raised a family in Yorktown Heights, NY. Lester was afflicted in later years with arthritis, and died in August of 1978. He is buried in Amawalk cemetery, not far from where he was born.

Mary Etta Alley Dykeman

Mary Etta Alley was born 24 April 1878 to J.W. and Anna Alley in Iowa, one of two daughters. In the 1880 census, her grandmother Elizabeth is also living with the family in Iowa.

In 1896 Mary married Peter Baldwin Dykeman, son of James and Ruth Mabie Dykeman. They have a daughter, Ruth Dykeman in September of 1897 in Montana. In 1907 they move to Riverton in Fremont County, Wyoming. In October 1908, the department of the interior publishes a notice in the Riverton review announcing Peter B Dykeman had filed their Homestead claim.

In 1917, an article in the hometown paper mentions Peter and his wife have gone to visit Ruth in Washington DC at school. however two years later I find she is attending dances and community activities in Riverton, so she must have returned to her parents after going to school.

In 1920 they are found in the census in Los Angeles, California, where they had gone for a stay for a few months. I have yet to discover why they are there, but I do know Peter is the president of the local bank and a well established citizen of Riverton, helping to bring electricity and coal mining to the area. My guess at this point is he is in California for business.

. Mary E Alley Dykeman died 13 Jul 1954, at the age of 76 and is buried in the Riverton Cemetery with Peter. Their daughter Ruth married Arthur Ward and had a son Phillip in 1925.

From Dolgopiaty to Dolgin

Harry Dolgin died May 17 1953 in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont at the Brightlook Hospital. Harry was born Hershel Dolgopiaty in Kiev, Ukraine, Russia on March 12th 1890.

Harry was the son of Ariah Lieb (or Aaron Louis) Dolgopyat and Brina (or Bertha) Tabatchnick, and had at least two sisters, Mindel who was born around 1879 and Esther who was born about 1887 along with a brother Phillip.

Mauretania

Brina, Herschel, Esther and Mindel Dolgopiaty immigrated to America on the Mauretania which traveled from Liverpool, England to arrive in New York City on 8 April 1910.

Passenger List of Mauretania

Brina died under the name Bertha Dolgin in Malden Massachusetts on 26th May 1912. She was listed on her death certificate as a widow of Aaron Dolgin. Her parents were listed as Dora and Solomon Tabatchnick, both born in Russia.

Osborn picnic

Its well known that the Osborn part of the family would often get together for a meal and spend the day together. In the boxes of pictures from this side of the family, we found the below photo. After some help from many cousins, we were able to identify everyone in the picture as well.

The patriarch of this family is James Osborn. While he isn't in the picture, His sister Zadie is, along with his second wife Lucinda. Their daughter, Isabel and her husband Cliff, with their children Cliff Jr and Lucy. Their daughter Chloe, her husband John Balser, daughter Barbara Balser and Chloe's son Buddy Dutcher. Their daughter Nancy and husband Herman Bouffard. Her nephew Weston Beach, better known as Pete whom Lucinda and James raised. Their daughter Elsie Osborn, and James' brother Charles Osborn.

Picture is believed to have been taken after 1939, when Herman and Nancy married, and before 1941 when Elsie married.

The four Junia Dykemans

The first Junia was the child of Hezekiah & Constant Doane Dykeman (also spelled Dyckman or Dikeman.) Born Nov 22 1785, he married Sarah Morehouse. They had three children, Belinda, Sally and Daniel. Junia served in the New York Militia in the War of 1812 in Capt. Ferris' company under Col. Carver. Junia died March 6 1875. Junia & Sarah are buried in the Old Southeast Church Cemetery in the town of Southeast, Putnam County NY.

The second Junia, Junia Warren Dykeman is the grandson of the first Junia, the only child of Daniel W and Emma C Dykeman. He was born July 9 1856. This Junia marries Helen A Beattys and they have 11 children; Junia Jr, Emma, Charles, Lewis, Frederick, William, Arlene Bessie, Helen Lucille, Elbert, Harold Horton, and Ralph Irving Dykeman. Junia Dies 22 April 1934, in Manhattan, New York City, New York. He is buried in the Milltown Cemetery in Brewster, Putnam County, New York.

The third Junia, Junia Warren Dykeman Jr was born 23 July 1878, in Dykemans, Putnam County, New York, just like the two generations before him. He married Bessie A Nichols and they had two daughters, Helen and Ruth Dykeman. This Junia was a Justice of the Peace and Town clerk in Patterson, NY. Junia died June 17 1962 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. He is buried in the Maple Avenue Cemetery in Towners, Putnam County, NY.

The last Junia, Junia William Dykeman is the son of Helen Dykeman and the grandson of Junia Warren Dykeman Jr. Junia William was born June 18 1942 in Danbury, CT. In July 2 1964, a legal notice was filed by the Putnam County Court stating that Junia William Dykeman would be now known as Miles Rivers. Despite that notice, Junia died in 1973 and is buried under his birth name in the Maple Avenue Cemetery in Patterson, Putnam County, New York.

There are many Helen Dykemans in my family, and this is the story of just one of them - my great-great-grandmother Helen Amelia Beattys Dykeman

The Civil War was a month old when Helen was born on the second of September 1861 to Charles S Beattys and Georgiana Howes in the town of Southeast in Putnam County, New York. She was about a year old when her dad went off to join the union army. A baby brother Daniel soon joined their family. Home life is not easy as her father is injured in the war, and returns just before her three year old brother dies. Just 9 months later, in 1866, Charles dies in a work related accident. Her mother Georgiana remarries in 1871 to Oliver Gay, but Helen remains the only child in the home.

Just shy of her 16th birthday, Helen (called Nellie) marries Junia Dykeman on Jul 2 1877. They reside in in Southeast, Putnam County, NY where Junia's family had been settled for many years. A small article was published in the Brewster Standard: announced “marriage of Junia W Dykeman and Nellie Bettis was very quietly celebrated on Sunday, July 1 1877 at the brides mother’s residence. The reception was held on evening following.” They have Junia Jr about a year later, when Helen is almost 17 and Junia Sr is 22, giving a start to what will become a large family.

In the 1880 Census we find the family living in Southeast, Putnam County NY. Junia is 24, born in NY and a farmer. Helen is listed as Nellie H, 19, Born in NY and Keeping House. Also listed is Junia Jr, 2 years old born in NY and the newest member of the house, baby Emma, at 11 months. Junia's mother Emma had died a few months before baby Emma's birth, which may be where the name comes from.

Four boys are born to the family by 1890; Charles R in 1881, Lewis H in 1885, William G in 1887, and Frederick S in 1890. There is no 1890 census, but all data points to Helen and Junia Sr still living in the family homestead in the town of Southeast, Putnam County NY. No 1892 state census has been found yet for this community. The railroad is established shortly after, going closely by the Homestead. The railroad stop there leads to the establishment of the hamlet of Dykeman's Station and in 1894 Dykemans gets a post office, putting it on the map.

Two more children are born, Arlene B in 1892, and Helen L in 1994. Helen's daughter Emma B Dykeman marries a cousin, Henry J Dykeman in April of 1897, moving out of the house. Helen and Junia have a son, Elbert Leslie Dykeman, born in late 1897 bringing their family to 9 children. In January of 1898, Helen's first grandchild is born, a daughter, Florence, to Emma and her husband Henry. In February of 1899, Helen's son Elbert dies. He is the only child they have that dies young, which is unusual for the times.

In the 1900 Census We find the family living in Dykemans Station, town of South east, Putnam County NY. Junia Sr is not listed.

In August of 1900, Harold Horton Dykeman, my ancestor, is born to Helen and Junia. In October, their son Junia marries and in 1902 has a daughter, Ruth. At some point after Harold is born Helen and Junia move to Manhattan. This was before their son Ralph is born in March of 1903, There are records that Junia's father Daniel had lived part time in Manhattan, so they may have moved to a Family owned apartment, or they could have found a new location of their own. Between 1900 and 1910, Helen sees her sons Charles, and Lewis marry. They each have a daughter shortly thereafter, Doris and Alice, Her mother Georgiana Howes Beatty Gay dies in 1909 in Schenectady.

In the 1910 Census, the family is living on West 96th street in Manhattan.
Junia is 53, B in NY, on his first marriage of 31 years, Manager of a Milk Dairy.
Wife Helen is 48, B in NY, a housekeeper, married for 31 years.
William, Son, is 22 and single, B in NY, working as a bookkeeper in a Milk Dairy.
Daughter Arlene B is 17, B in NY, single and working as a bookkeeper in a Milk Dairy.
Daughter Helen L is 14, B in NY, single, no occupation.
Son Harold H. is 9, B in NY, Single, no occupation.
Son Ralph I is 7, Single,B in NY, no occupation.

Between 1910 and 1920, Frederick and William both get married. The grandchildren list grow to include Daniel, Helen, Frederick, Robert, Thelma, Kendall, Una, and Robert. World War one expands to include America, the Spanish Flu happens, and women in American gain the right to vote. Helen's son Charles, a state trooper, dies of Pleurisy in the beginning of 1920.

In the 1920 Census, we find the family still living on West 96th street in Manhattan, all born in USA with parents born in USA.

Helen (listed as Ellen) Wife, Married, 56, at home.

Helen and Junia are living at 166 West 96 Street in New York city when Helen goes to have an operation for a intestinal blockage. Unfortunately at the age of 59, in May of 1920, Helen Passes away from complications. In the Brewster Standard June 4, 1920 her obituary is published: Sunday Morning 11 o’clock at St. Vincents Hospital, Helen Bettis, Wife of JW Dykeman died in her 59th year of age. Her death followed an operation for relief of strangulated Hernia. Helen was born in South East Center Father Charles H Bettis Mother Georgianna Howes, Daughter of late JO Howes.

Helen is buried in the Milltown Cemetery in Putnam county NY. Her husband Junia passes away in 1934. She is surrounded by the graves of many of her children and grandchildren.

Joshua A Cornell 1849 - 1943

When you're big into Genealogy, you find yourself becoming very familiar with people in your family tree who died long before you were born. So although Joshua Cornell is actually my great-great grandfather I tend to refer to him as "Grandpa Josh" because its just simplier. My very tolerant family apparently has gotten used to this because they know exactly who I'm referring to. I've heard some Grandpa Josh stories over the years which I kept in mind while looking at his genealogy.

Joshua A Cornell was born on June 30, 1849 to Jacob G Cornell and Mary McCord. He joined at home two brothers, Aaron and Willett, and a sister Sarah. His brother Ezra was born three years later. There's little known about his mother, Mary McCord, and speculation that she was Jacob's second wife. If so, Joshua was her first child. But thats a whole other story to tell some other time. Joshua's brother Aaron had a blacksmith shop, which was in the exact spot the new Croton Dam was built, which is why many refer to the dam as the Cornell Dam. The family farm and where Joshua was born is now under water, one of many homes flooded when the dam was completed.

Joshua was taught the trade of a wheelwright at first, according to his obituary. However he also is listed in the census throughout the years as a carriage maker, a blacksmith, and a carpenter with his own shop. Joshua married Alice Chase on Oct 22 1871. Their son Ira J Cornell was born in May of 1874, Wright Benjamin Cornell in November of 1878. It was much later, in November of 1889, Lester Albert Cornell was born.

Here they are all together: Lester being the younger one on the left, behind him is Wright, with Wright's wife Lizzie (Elizabeth Titus) besides Lester. Standing in the back is Grandpa Josh with his wife Alice on the right. Ira is in the right front with his wife Allie (Almira Fisher) just slightly behind and to the left of him. Date of photo unknown, but Wright married in 1903 and Ira died in 1905, which gives us a small window when this photo could have been taken. Lester would marry much later - in 1923, to Florence Purdy.

One of the stories I've heard told about Grandpa Josh was that he had a temper and sometimes he & Alice fought. Matter of fact, (they would say) he lived out in the garage for a time. The garage they referred to was once Grandpa Josh's shop. he bought it in 1885 and then began to build their house next to it. I thought this a funny story growing up.

Wright, Joshua and Ira

Then, as I began to research the family tree an odd thing happened. I found Alice & Lester in the census, but not Grandpa Josh. He was alive, so why wasn't he there? Family reminded me he lived in the garage for a while... apparently not for a night or two, but for a year or more. Sure enough, looking around the neighborhood in the census, there Grandpa Josh was, living by himself in the Garage. It wasn't the last Census I found him listed living alone either. no one seems to know how long he lived out there, or if it was an on and off type of thing.

Grandpa Josh, along with his sons Lester and Wright were well known for their carpentry skills. Some of the buildings for Trinity-Pawling, a private boys school in Pawling, NY, were built by the three of them. The family also hunted. In 1926, at 77, Joshua was mentioned in the paper for getting some squirrel and a pheasant.

Alice Chase Cornell died in July of 1939, after being ill for a few weeks. Grandpa Josh however lived a long time. When he turned 91 his family threw him a big get-together to celebrate. Joshua was the last of his siblings to pass away, in 1943 at the age of 94.
