The Story of Eostre and Kaskuh

Moonlight held the eventide to ransom. Silvery light dazzled the night time creatures until they became moon drunk, dizzy with love and yearning for the lustrous disk. Slowly traversing a singular path through the midnight sky, he drew all woken creatures to him like a lodestone.

The doe paused in the centre of a field of barley; scenting familiar aromas on a breath of moist air whispering past her twitching nose. Gradually a deep longing invaded her bones, from the tips of her paws that touched the fertile, mahogany red-brown earth, to the ends of her elegant long ears gilded by the solitary moon.

An elemental force surged throughout her lean body and trembling she stood tall on her muscular hind legs to survey the supernatural world around her. She strained to listen, both ears taught and standing proud, as slowly and quietly a strange but wonderful music began to play. The echo of this ancient song rippled across the whiskered barley spikelets, swaying and moving in spirals and circles until the field seemed to shimmer as if a sentient being.

Deep inside, the young hare felt a stirring, joyfulness began to radiate, to pulsate through her veins and tingle throughout her fur, until, effervescing she leapt high into the night sky. Not once or twice but ceaselessly and in perpetual motion she rose swiftly and seamlessly, mirroring the endless motion of waves sent by great oceans across endless shores.

With each leap Eostre gazed up at the sole object of her desire. Her large dark brown eyes reflected the love she bore for Kaskuh. Consumed by a thirst that would not be slaked until she fell to the earth panting with her exertions; Eostre danced and gyrated, pirouetted and capered in the barley until she attracted the eye of Kaskuh.

In that split second, time spluttered and stood still. Pale blossom falling from the trees hung suspended, birds arrested in flight, dormice halted mid-nibble and worms rested. The doe sat contemplating the giant orb. Kaskuh admired the lissom hare. An eon passed, minds met and melded; all thoughts became one; knowledge was exchanged and with one giant earth-shattering crescendo nature began to move once again.

Eostre rested, that lethargic well sated rest, of one who has danced for and been acknowledge by a God. Quiescent she lay on the earth, safe in the knowledge of a feminine secret; of love exchanged, of life emerging. Kaskuh looked down and embraced his hare with a mantle of protective moonlight.

This piece was almost definitely commissioned as a travel poster for the Southwest, though its location is unknown and may be a combination of a real place and the artists imagination.

Stanley Roy Badmin was known for his detailed watercolours, though it was his book illustrations that brought him to a wider audience, and in the later years of his career that he was asked regularly to produce travel posters for clients such as London Transport and British Railways.

This poster is likely to be one such commission
