Happy Tuesday everyone! Recently I wrote some reviews on new products to hit our store these past couple of weeks. Since I'm the kind of guy who loves reading reviews, I wanted to share my thoughts on the following three items with you. These are my unbiased thoughts on them, and hopefully they will help you decide if the products will fit your style or not.

CARD ARTISTRY 2.0 BY JUSTIN FLOM - DVD

In case you aren't familiar with the Card Artistry effect, it can be summed up like this. A spectator's card is lost in the deck, and the magician reveals the card by "painting" a classic picture (like the Mona Lisa) which contains your card within the painting! It's one of those things you have to SEE to get the full picture, and you can view a demo of it right here.

With this second 2.0 version, Justin has taken things to the next level. Unlike the original version (which is only done with one painting during performance), this version contains a collage of many famous paintings, with the spectator's card as the highlighted masterpiece!

But BEST OF ALL, in this version, the card can be signed or drawn upon by the spectator. It's much more personal in nature, and as magician's that's worth its weight in gold.

It's not just a "quick" card trick. This is one of those things where you want to CONNECT with your spectator. Since you ask them to draw a piece of artwork on the card, this gives you precious time to sit with them, strike up a conversation, and make that personal connection which really opens them up emotionally for the finale (which they will NEVER see coming).

You can literally turn this into a 10 minute effect as you comment and interact with your spectators!

In case you are wondering: NO, you DO NOT need to own the first Card Artistry before purchasing this one. In fact, Justin includes the entire instruction from the original Card Artistry on this DVD! So you basically get that entire DVD on here, plus you get the new content which was added for this new 2.0 version.

PROS:
- When the effect is over, and they're sitting there in total amazement, all the cards can be examined! Once the spectator sees the final "painting", they are free to look at the cards (front and back). There is nothing to clean up or ditch.

- The cards are produced on quality USPCC stock, so they aren't cheap or flimsy. In fact, because there are no red/blue backs on the cards, they can be put into any deck that you like, assuming that the FACES of the deck you're using match the standard pips of most decks. So if you use a Tally-Ho deck for example, you can easily use these cards because the faces will still match that deck.

- Reset is ALMOST instant. If you want to immediately perform this again, you just need to pick up the cards in a certain order. This can easily be done by picking them up in reverse order, and it's something that can be casually done while speaking to your spectator without them thinking about it. Once the stack is picked up, it's put back in the deck and you're ready to go again.

CONS:
- Not really a "con" since if you're purchasing this effect, you already know what you're getting, but this is an effect that can only be performed with a table or flat surface. Again, not a big deal since this is the nature of the effect. No one should purchase this and say, "What? You mean I can't have this performed while walking down the street to random people?" No, you can't.....unless you have your own pop-up table!

- While the effect comes with a great instructional DVD (and the cards), you still need to perform this with a sticky surface. Justin Flom recommends the back of a close up pad (the kind which has a rubbery back). Otherwise, it will be much more difficult for you to execute the "painting" motion, because the cards won't have anything to adhere to. So if you're purchasing this effect, just keep that in mind.

Overall, I would give this effect 8.5/10. It's a FANTASTIC effect which I would have given 10/10, except it does need to be performed on a surface, and that surface shouldn't be too smooth or else it would be more difficult to pull off. Not to mention, it can't be done with a borrowed deck due to the special painted cards needed, but if that's not an issue for you, this is a MEMORABLE effect, and it's something which you will CONNECT to your spectator because it's very personal in nature. The fact that you can use a spectator's personalized card in the painting, and that it can be performed again with a DIFFERENT card makes this version better than the original.

The DVD is well produced, and Justin is very straightforward and easy to learn from. If you don't mind having a stack in your deck, and you have the right surface to perform on, this is a trick that is memorable, visual, and not something that people will have seen before!

As Joshua Jay says on the DVD, "a thumbtip is a SECRET POCKET that's in plain site, and yet is invisible." What a great description of this universal gimmick that everyone should own! And yet, many who own one don't understand all the possibilities that you can use it for!

Here's what I liked about the DVD Download (which I watched start-to-finish and never got bored):

If you are new to thumb tips, or if you don't currently use one because you think it's limited in what you can do with it, then this really offers some great routines that you can do.

I remember the first trick I ever saw a magician do with a thumbtip: he made a silk disappear. I thought this was all you could do with a thumbtip for a long time (before getting involved with magic, of course)!

On this DVD, Joshua Jay (who is an outstanding teacher and presenter) shows how thumbtips are used to make items switch, appear, disappear, and transpose....all with this simple little gimmick that you can pick up for under a buck!

The routines on this DVD are easy for a beginner, but pack serious power for the professional. Did you ever think to do a METAL BENDING routine using a thumbtip? That's covered on here, along with many other routines.

Not to mention, Joshua covers a technique on here (during the teaching of Salt and Pepper) which I never even thought to use before (but can't mention or else I'd give it away)! All I got to say is, "Joshua, way to think outside the box, brother!"

In addition to routines, Joshua goes in depth about the different kinds of thumbtips, and how it really doesn't matter what skin color you are, or what type of thumbtip you use......he teaches you how to make it virtually undetectable so you don't feel like someone is going to notice it.

He covers thumbtip CARE, and how to make them fit a certain way! He covers MANAGEMENT, ANGLES, and how to keep it on without it being noticed.

He doesn't just say, "Here's an effect, let me teach it to you." He covers PRINCIPLES first, devoting an entire sections to STEALS and LOADS, so that you feel comfortable doing the "moves" before ever getting into the routines.

To sum it up, this isn't just a DVD on some tricks you can do with thumbtips. In fact, I found a lot of GREAT VALUE in the first half of the DVD, where Joshua is just TALKING about the management and angles.....how to carry yourself......how to be relaxed while using them. After watching this DVD, you're going to want to bust out your Thumbtip and begin using it all the time!

I just finished watching the first volume of this Handpicked Astonishment series (Thumbtips), which I absolutely loved! Now it's time to move onto the card forces.

I must admit that I love CARD MAGIC above all else. I always have. So I was particularly looking forward to reviewing this one.

Because this is a separate review, I do need to repeat myself a little (in case you haven't yet checked out my other review). Joshua Jay is fantastic. There's just something about his presentational style which is very inviting, and easy to learn from. You don't have to go, "Wait a minute....what the heck did he just do? Where's that rewind button!" Nope, not here. His teaching is clear and concise, and everything is covered beautifully from multiple angles.

Another thing I liked about this DVD: it's not just a collection of tricks or routines. In fact, Joshua goes into detail about principles that you need to know, like SELLING THE FORCE and the psychology behind it. For example, he covers how to make a person (who picked a card YOU FORCED on him) begin to believe that they THOUGHT of the card (as opposed to picking it). It's subtleties like this which are invaluable, and well worth the cost of the DVD. Anyone can learn a "move", but to learn the psychological mechanics behind it (and how to make the spectator THINK something happened when it really didn't) is such a powerful thing.

In addition to executing forces, Joshua covers such topics as MISDIRECTION. In other words, he doesn't just say, "First you do this....then you do that. BOOM, forced card." Instead, he talks about using timing and certain words/gestures to create misdirection which naturally plays into the force.

He covers forces from the TOP and BOTTOM of the deck, so you will be able to use the right one that fits what you're looking for.

One of the things I LOVED is when Joshua imparts little bits of knowledge that you never even thought about before. For example, you may not realize it, but when you TURN AWAY your head to show a spectator a card, you are psychologically conveying to them that you have no idea what this card is, nor do you want to know. Hence, you're looking away. That's something you may do naturally, but you may have never stopped to think, "Wow, you're right! Just by looking away, I can take the heat off the force because it subconsciously instills in the spectator's mind that this card is not known to the magician."

Another thing Joshua does (especially with the Slipcut Force) is he CORRECTS a lot of mistakes that other magicians do. He trims the fat, and gets down to the bare bones of how to perform it correctly.

Bottom line: I loved this DVD. For card magic, it's always good to know multiple ways to force a card. Whether you're new to card magic, or you're a working pro, I think you will find value in this DVD. Beginners will love the easy instruction, and professionals will love Joshua's thoughts and background behind the motivation of the force.

There’s a real variety of magic from a bent coin in a spectators hand routine, a powerful sugar packet routine based on a David Williamsons routine, Garret Thomas’s bill to sugar packet, and a routine called Salt and Pepper which offers something new in the world of thumbtip technology, as well a very clever idea incorporating a fortune cookie.

This DVD covers all the basics plus a lot of extra work that will make both the amateur and professional want to re-think the way they use a thumbtip. There is no reason why you should ever feel conspicuous when you have the thumbtip on after watching this. This is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

In only 36 minutes Joshua Jay covers different models, manipulations such as loading and stealing, critical angles, psychological subtleties and application examples for this ingenious tool. For a beginner, this concentrated filtration provides an entry at a high level, which is very motivating to study intensively with this topic. The pro will be enthused about the subtleties that are contributed i.e. from the creative mind of Garrett Thomas. With him Joshua has a fabulous thinker at his side when it comes to justify motivations and to improve retracted movements. This is one concern of this DVD series: to guide the magician to gain relaxed and flowing movements. In four performances Joshua demonstrates, why it is worth the intense scrutiny of the thumb tip. For this purpose he uses everyday objects such as a coin, which bends magically in the spectator hand, a bill that travels invisibly into a sugar pack, a prediction in a fortune cookie or an empty coffee cup in which sugar appears. Joshua has obviously chosen the walk-around situation in a noisy bar to demonstrate to the beginner how little effort is required to produce magical moments. Of course we know that the use of the thumb tip provides endless possibilities also close-up and on stage.

Forces are the topic in the second episode of the new DVD series by Paul Harris. A complex issue, which easily can fill volumes of books. Even more astonishing is what Joshua Jay is presenting us here on one DVD: In 55 minutes he presents eight strong forces, covers psychological finesses and demonstrates in three routines, how the forced card turns into a thought of card in the spectator’s mind. Only by manipulating the perception of the audience, the "normal" force turns into a strong weapon. Joshua Jay demonstrates the Cross Cut Force, Slip Cut Force, the Swing Cut Force, the Touch Force and the Riffle Force. Even though he has picked out the jewels, beginners should not fall into the delusion to think that all has been said. The further study of the extensive literature is inevitable. Joshua motivates to do so by his enthusiasm for the force techniques. He also underlines the importance of rhythm, timing and body language, so that the viewer cannot remember all the details afterwards. And that needs to be practiced! If you stick to your favourite methods for ages, you should review your techniques from time to time and have a careful look when Joshua Jay puts his finger on the wounds of typical mistakes, which he observes with magic colleagues. With the Touch Force he presents a method by Gary Ouellet, which is rarely used, even though it is incredibly bold and effective. In his routines that he shows and explains in the end a card disappears from a deck and appears in the wallet of the magician; a chosen card appears separated into two halves in two card decks; the index of a card ends up in a glass and is missing on the previously selected card.

Conclusion: This is a compact master class about one of the strongest weapons of magic. Highly recommended!

Hey everyone! Real quick, I hate to use the newsletter to embarrass myself, but that's exactly what I am going to do!

Earlier today, I sent out an exciting newsletter which features some of the top new items in our store. However, I made two errors:

1. The title of the newsletter had a 1st grade grammatical error! It said "This new magic items are hot." Obviously, it should have said "THESE new magic items are hot."

I'd like to blame Microsoft and automatic spell correction for that one......but I can't! I was simply trying to send out the newsletter quickly before the end of the day, and I totally missed that grammatical no-no. My 8 year old daughter is hanging her head in shame at her father, because even she knows better than to rush an important assignment!

We have a very exciting new feature on the MJM Magic website! In fact, it's already been there for almost a week, but I wanted to make sure it was working smoothly before sending out this global announcement!

Introducing the new MJM REWARDS PROGRAM! Basically, we are giving you money back on just about EVERYTHING IN OUR STORE by issuing you Reward Points. Each Reward Point is worth $1.00, and you can apply them automatically to your order as you accumulate them.

Why are we doing this? For a couple of reasons:

First, we are slowly phasing out the Returning Customer Discount coupon. Now before you freak out, let me explain. Back when I started MJM Magic in 2004, there was no such thing as Price Protected items. In other words, everything we sold back then had the freedom to be discounted. Since we were allowed to discount EVERYTHING in our store, we created this Returning Customer coupon to give you even MORE SAVINGS to purchase those items with us.

Now fast forward to 2013. It's become an increasing trend in the magic industry for creators to only release their items as long as stores don't discount them. So if we want to carry these new items, we have to sell them at the same price as everyone else. NO DISCOUNTS. This is making our Returning Customer Discount less relevant and not very practical to use.

Also, the returning customer needs to be applied MANUALLY every time you make a purchase. If you don't remember the code, then it isn't applied to the order. Booo. :(

So as a solution to these issues, I have been developing and testing out the new MJM Rewards Program, and I believe it solves both these issues above!

This is something that I have been working on at MJM Magic for quite some time, and I'm excited to finally roll it out for you!

With the magic industry moving further away from discounting products, I wanted a way to still reward our customers for purchasing items at MJM Magic. This led me to roll-out our new MJM Rewards program!

What are MJM Magic Rewards Points?

Quite simply, they are MONEY!

How do they work?

Certain items in our store earn you Rewards Points. You can redeem these points as REAL MONEY on future orders.

How much are they worth?

The values vary, but as a general rule, 1 point = $1.00! So if you purchase an item that has 3 Reward Points, you just earned yourself $3.00 to use on your next order!

How can I see how many reward points I have earned?

Website Changes and We Need Your Feedback!

Happy Friday, everyone! This is just going to be a real quick email to fill you in on what's been going on this week.

As you know, we have been very busy with a website upgrade. This has brought some very welcome changes and improvements that we've been working on for a long time! Below are some of the highlights:

1. NEW DVD DOWNLOADS!

In the past, we offered Streaming Videos. While those were good, it limited our customers because you could only watch them from an active Internet connection, and you couldn't save them. Well, have no fear, because we have REVAMPED the way we offer downloadable products now, and you can now SAVE (ie DOWNLOAD) the files to your computer to watch offline!

The process couldn't be easier. Simply browse our DVD DOWNLOAD category on our website (http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/dvd-downloads-c-47.html), and once we process your order, you will have access to the file on our website. You can then choose to watch it online through the free video player that we embed on our website, or you can SAVE the files to your computer to watch offline.

We are offering new DVD Downloads almost every day, so be sure to check back daily!

2. ORDER SHIPPING ESTIMATIONS MADE EASY!

One of the most common questions we get is always, "When will my order ship?" While I have gone to great lengths to let my customers know how long an individual item takes to ship (on the product's description page), I did some more coding and made things even simpler for you guys.

So now, no matter what products you're purchasing, as soon as you add an item to your shopping cart, you will see our HIGHLIGHTED Shipping Estimation time displayed right there for you! While it's not a guarantee, it's a pretty darn close estimation as to when your order will ship based on the items in your shopping cart.

Try it out and see! Add some items and you will know before purchase exactly when we EXPECT to ship the order. NOTE: We usually ship EARLIER than the estimated time, but we always publish a little extra time to allow for unexpected delays with UPS deliveries.

WHAT? NO MORE WISH LIST?

The biggest issue we've been hearing about is the removal of the Wish List feature on our website. The reason why it's gone is because the software developers for that module haven't yet updated it with new/improved code to be compatible with our new software.

So even though the Wish List is currently gone, the DATA and all your saved items are still there in our database. It's just inaccessible until we can get the program back up and running (no current ETA).

However, I want your FEEDBACK on this issue. To me, the MAIN purpose of a Wish List is to serve two purposes:

To save items that you want to purchase later
To email the list to friends and family so that they can purchase items for you

Now, my question to you Wish List users is this: How many of you actually used the email Wish List function? In other words, did you mainly use your Wish List to SAVE ITEMS for later, or did you seriously utilize the email feature to send to people?

The reason why I ask is because we do have an alternative program called the "Save For Later" program. It works much like a wish list, where it will allow you to SAVE items into a private shopping cart, allowing you to ADD/REMOVE them as you see fit. However, there is no EMAIL function, and I don't know if I can port all your old Wish List items into it. I can try, but I haven't played around with it yet, so let's assume that I can't. Would you find this Save For Later program useful (and a worthy replacement of the old Wish List program)?

I want to know your thoughts, so let me know!

Major Website Updates - In Progress

If our website looks a little different, that's because we are slowly updating it this month. We are trying to keep the basic look and layout the same, but you're going to notice some differences as we go along.

First off, if for some reason you go to our website (www.MJMMagic.com) and the layout looks really, really bad (like missing colors, misaligned menus, etc), then here is what you need to do:

1. Right click your mouse on our website
2. Select the RELOAD menu option

That will reload all our image files and updated templates, which will correct any layout problem.

In the meantime, if you see ANYTHING out of the ordinary, please let me know. Here are some things I am interested in hearing about:

If you see something MISSING that you want us to bring back
If something is broken or not working (like not being able to checkout, or search for products)

Anything else that you want to bring to my attention, just click the CONTACT US link at the top of our website and let me know.

As you can imagine, there is a LOT of things that I've had to try and import into our new software update, and I may have missed something. Or if you want to see some new features offered at MJM Magic that we haven't done before, let me know that as well!

I just wanted to take a quick moment to wish you a Happy Holidays, from my family to yours!

Here at MJM Magic, I literally have a BLAST working each and every day. Whether it's filling your orders, answering questions, or just getting my hands on the latest & greatest magic tricks to hit the market, it's never a dull day over here. In fact, it's safe to say that no two days are the same because things are always changing (for the better).

We've already had a record breaking holiday season shipping 100+ orders a day (that's a lot for us), and since I'm the main guy who keeps this ship running, I've been working evenings and weekends just to make sure we stay on top of things.

So before taking these next few days off for some much needed rest, I wanted to THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU for making this a great holiday season. This Just In! Haunted 2.0 (DVD plus Improved Gimmick)!

Peter Eggink started it all with his wildly popular "Haunted". Mark Traversoni then experimented for literally hundreds of hours with the concept to evolve it into this final tribute to Peter's creation.

Now everyone can easily perform Mark's exquisite evolution of Haunted within minutes of opening the box!

Haunted 2.0 uses the same basic method of the original Haunted...but the big 2.0 difference is in the enhanced materials and break-through concepts that dramatically alter Haunted's genetic code!
