We left Angle Tarn and headed off to Kidsty Pike and Shap. Glad that we didn’t have to start from Patterdale, as this was a long day as it was.

The climb was fairly gradual and the sun was shining, a wonderful day to be walking. We crossed Satura Crag which was an interesting mix of boggy peat and rocky crags, around the foot of Rest Dodd and up to the summit of Knott. From here we started as if towards High Street but quickly took a sharp left turn over Twopenny Crag and Rampsgill Head.

We made good time to Kidsty Pike and had a brief stop to try and spot the golden eagle. As with all my visits to this part of the lakes, no joy sadly. I hope it’s still there.

We now started to descend. Initially not too steep but this soon changed and it got steeper and steeper! By the time we reached Kidsty Howes we were needing to use our hands for support and take careful steps. We passed a dutch family who were doing the walk the opposite way and they had only just begun the climb,. We didn’t envy them in the heat the day was now giving.

The walk along Haweswater Reservoir was quite tough, constantly undulating. The First climb was to Castle Crag, which alegedly was the site of or had a Fort just above it. We didnt see anything but we kept going until we reached Measand Beck and The Forces, where a little wooden bridge crossed it and we had a little break, soaked our feet, ate our lunch and talked to many fellow walkers as they caught and passed us from Patterdale.

We eventually decided to move on again and proceeded to Burn Banks at the end of Haweswater Reservoir, and proceeded to follow Haweswater Beck to Thornthwaite Force and across the fields to Shap. We actually took Wainwright’s suggestion and took the road via Rosgill to save time. It really didn’t, and I found it hard on the feet! Once at Shap we found New Ing Farm and set up camp outside on the freshly mowed back lawn!

Cumberland sausage and chips tonight in the local chippy, it was amazing and then we went opposite to the Bulls Head for a couple of pints and a game of pool.

Finally back to the tents aware of another sizeable walk tomorrow.

This was in case anyone wanted to visit Helvellyn (we all opted out due to the weather). Half the group left Grasmere early(ish) while myself and Rich had seen the weather forcast, predicting an improvement throughout the day, so we stopped for another coffee!. I should mentioned the sauna at the Grasmere hostel, the guys had a wonderful sauna the night before, i opted for sleep!.

Back to the story, we finally left the hostel about 10.30! immediately after a downpour and started up Tongue Gill. We passed the falls of Tongue Gill Force and took the right hand valley up Tongue Gill rather than Little Tongue Gill. As we approached the top, and Hause Moss, there was a beautiful waterfall that appears to be unnamed.

Hause Moss is an odd place, looking almost like at one time it was home to a tarn. From here it was over Grisedale Hause and Hause Gap to see Grisedale Tarn, with Dollywagon Pike rising behind, and the weather was starting to improve! Patches of blue sky are growing.

We descended to Grisedale Tarn where we met the “Von Trapp” family, we called them! A wonderful family also doing the Coast to Coast, who made us a brew! We would bump into each other a lot over the rest of the walk, they were always smiling and always great company.

And it was here i gave up smoking! It was pointed out to me how wrong it looked sat up in the mountains, wearing a Macmillan Cancer Support T-shirt and smoking a cigarette!. I had a few after but that was the turning point for me.

Once again, back to the story! We proceeded down Grisedale Beck down into the valley, past a beautiful barn, which if i ever win the lottery i would love to buy and convert!

Now at Patterdale we stopped at the hotel for some lunch, a lovely burger, chips and a pint, knowing we only had a couple of miles to go we saw no problem with this. By now the weather was lovely, so we sat in the beer garden in front of the hotel.

We called in to the Old Post Office to pick up tea and see where Wainwrights books were first sold and headed up to Boredale Hause, eating an icecream! It was a hard climb it must be said, we stopped more than once!

We managed to take a wrong turn here, much to the amusement of Rich! Make sure you turn right, don;t take any of the straight-on options!

You walk round the side of Angletarn Pikes and are greated by a breath taking view of Angle Tarn. We were all so pleased we had opted to camp here for the night and not in Patterdale. Plus of course we did not have that steep climb first thing in the morning.

We set up camp and after tea wandered up on to Angletarn Pikes to watch the sun set. Perfect finish to the day.

We started our Coast to Coast Walk at St Bees on Saturday 30th July, after 2 or 3 (we took it easy, honestly!) beers at the Seacote Hotel next to the campsite on the Friday evening. Our plan to stop at Ennerdale Bridge that night. Cooked breakfast completed and all packed away we head to the beach for the traditional foot wetting before we head East.

From here it is off St Bees beach and then up a steep (well its steep on day 1 with a full rucksack!) track onto the cliff. There is a good photo opportunity (that I missed!) about 1/4 of the way up – a signpost saying 1mile to St Bees and 191miles to Robin Hood’s Bay.

We followed the path along the cliff tops, some long climbs, good to get you into shape for the days ahead.

We stopped near the lighthouse at St Bees Head for a drink and a chat. At this point you can head up to the lighthouse and cut a corner or continue along the coast a little further. We opted to carry on along the cliffs and were glad we did. The cliffs take on a wild and more rugged feel to them in this last section, with views down into Whitehaven.

From the cliffs we headed inland towards Sandwith with the Lake District Fells rising in the distance.

Sandwith is a quaint little village with a Green and a Pub. We resisted the pub and sat on a bench on the Green for a sandwich and some water.

We carried on towards Moor Row acroos some fields and inder the railway line. At Moor Row we return to roads and you will see the Coast to Coast walker statue on the corner of the road junction.

We now have quite a bit of road and farm track walking , through Moor Row and then onto Cleator. From here on towards Dent Hill. The climb is quite steep but well shaded. We stopped off 1/2 way up to cool down in the shade.

The path suddenly gets much steeper, as we come out of the trees, a taster of what we are in for when we reach the lakeland fells proper. But the views are amazing, when you finally reach the summit. From here you can survey your days walk from St Bees.

The official route down swings off on a long detour, or, like us you can go straight down. Be warned it is very steep! I would not suggest it in wet or icy weather!

Nannycatch Gate is a lovely little valley you gently walk up

At the top of this valley you bear right, and follow the road down to Ennerdale Bridge.

I have to admit i was quite tired and looking forward to a pint and to set up camp. To our surprise the campsite we thought we were going to stop at had closed! (We had not booked in anywhere believing we would be able to squeeze in somewhere and if not we’d wild camp). We made some quick calls and found that the Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre, the other end of Ennerdale had a field behind it we could use to camp in for a reasonable fee and use the wash facilitied there. So off we set with an unexpected extra 4 miles!

It has to be said, it was a wonderful evening walk, the views along the lake were amazing

We stopped off at Robin Hoods Chair for a photo before a short scramble and continuing on to the Centre all at our own paces

Finally we arrived and set up camp

We left Rosthwaite in the rain and headed up the side of Greenup Gill towards Grasmere. There was low cloud and limited but not poor visibility. We met a young couple from Norwich and a retired couple from Australia, ex-pats come to remember a bit of the UK. The climb continued, over rocks and uneven ground, until we were presented with the sight of Lining Crag! It looks intimidating and we all said how glad we were not having ot go that way, but we were! The path climbs very steeply to the left of the crag, zig-zaging over rough, slippery rock, but the top was a superb place to stop for a cup of tea and to admire the view.

There are four cities in the East Midlands: Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Nottingham.

The highest point in the region, at 636m (2,088 ft) is Kinder Scout in the Peak District area of the southern Pennines in north-west Derbyshire near Glossop. Other upland hilly areas of 150m to 278m (455 ft to 910 ft) are located in and around the Charnwood Forest area NNW of Leicester, in eastern Leicestershire, north-western Northamptonshire and to a lesser extent in the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The centre of the East Midlands area lies roughly between Bingham, Notts and Bottesford, Leics. The geographical centre of England lies in Higham on the Hill in westLeicestershire, close to the boundary between the East and West Midlands. Some 88% of the land is rural in character, although agriculture accounts for less than three percent of the region’s jobs. All of the region’s coastline lies within Lincolnshire; the only maritime county of the six.

Probably one of the most popular walks in the Lake District, taking in the infamous Striding Edge and culminating in reaching the summit of the 3rd highest peak in England.

My first walk with a group of colleagues, having heard and read so much about Striding Edge, this was something we all really wanted to do.

There are several routes to choose from when walking from Glenridding to Striding Edge and Helvellyn, this time we took a pathout of Glenridding from Westside up towards Keldas. From there we took a path past the lake, into Grisdale Valley. We then followed a clear footpath diagonally up the North side of the Grisedale Valley to Hole in the Wall, where we stopped for soup and tea, before heading on to Striding Edge.

Now, Striding Edge! It was very windy and we were unsure if it was safe to take the ridge path. As i stepped on to it the wind was buffeting but the start is a wide flat slab, so i decided to try the first bit at least. Within 20ft we seemed to enter the shelter of Helvellyn and the wind began to drop quickly, so we continued, including a small leap between rocks! You can easily avoid this.

The ridge undulates and becomes really quite narrow at times before opening out at High Spying How. As the wind had completely dropped now we stopped for our sandwiches here. From her you have “The Chimney”, a short scramble down, which can be avoided if you retrace your steps and take the lower path.

Apparently we took an alternative route down not the Chimney itself. Now there is a relatively straightforward scramble up to the summit of Helvellyn.

Now to find Swirral Edge. I was warned it isn’t easy to see but is marked by a small cairn. Arriving at the cairn we looked down, hardly believing there could be a path down! I, and most of my fellow walkers, found this more exposed than Striding Edge!

Having said that it was enjoyable and all too soon we were back upright on our feet walking. You have a choice to folow the ridge to Catstye Cam and extended views down to Ullswater or drop down to Red Tarn to relax by its banks. We headed for the tarn!

From the Tarn a clear path leads you back down the valley past Greenside Mine, once the biggest lead mine in Cumbria.
