has released an update (KB971033) that detects and blacklists you if you install it. As long as you avoid the update, it will work.

Weak passwords are a constant problem for websites and businesses trying to secure their data. There are thousands of hackers all over the world trying to break into systems at all hours of the day using password cracker software.

Since disconnecting systems from the internet is not an option for most organizations, it is important to enforce strong password policies in order to keep hackers out. The reason for that is if users are given the opportunity, they will pick weak passwords. Fortunately, all modern operating systems today allow system administrators to enforce strong password policies.

Most Common Passwords

Many people are prone to using short and simple passwords that are easily guessed. Some of those most common passwords include:

* Blank password
* The word "password"
* The user's username or login name
* Names of spouses, friends, or pets
* License plate numbers
* Swear words

Hackers use password hacking programs that attack most of the above passwords as well as many other simple variations of the above. Hackers targeting a specific person such as a politician or celebrity can perform searches on the internet to get personal information. Even a myspace page that contains the name of a pet could allow a hacker to break into a user's account.

Self-Service Password Reset Vulnerability

Educated guesses are very effective when it comes to systems with self service password reset policies that ask personal questions. In 2008, Sarah Palin's yahoo mail account was hacked by someone researching Sarah Palin's personal life to answer the password reset questions.

Phishing Schemes and Keyloggers

The easiest way to get passwords is to have trojan horses install programs on a user's PC to record keystrokes via a keylogger program. Another way is for a hacker to set up a website that looks exactly like the real website and trick users into giving away their username and password via a link given in email to the fake website. It's important for users to be suspicious of all email purporting themselves to come from their bank, school, social networking websites, etc.

Password Strength

The following character classes are used to define the strength of a password.

* Upper case letters (26 characters)
* Lower case letters (26 characters)
* Punctuation (approximately 33 characters)
* Numbers (10 characters)

The amount of time and computing effort required to break a password increases significantly if a random character is picked from each character class. In a recent phishing scheme for myspace passwords, only 8% of passwords had all four character classes.

Best Practices for Password Security

Only a few important steps are needed for users to protect their passwords and online security.

The first thing to do is to pick a strong password utilizing all characters classes to maximize the strength of a password. The password needs to be at least eight characters but more is better. Make it easy to memorize by using a mnemonic device. For example:

Secondly, make sure all antivirus software, phishing filter software, and anti-malware software is installed. There is free antivirus software out there that is quite good and comparable to paid commerical antivirus software.

Finally, be suspicious of all emails even if they appear to be authentic. Except for an occasional slip in English grammar, it's usually impossible to detect an email that is actually part of a phishing scheme. The graphics and logo in the email as well as the fake website are usually identical to the real website. The best practice is to always use the browser bookmark to go to the website instead of using a link in an email. :D

How to Know when you are infected with RATs or Keyloggers

Basic way to guard us from keylogers

Now i believe Everyone here might know that you need to have an internet connection to make a RAT or a Password Recovery Tool work, which would mean, if you are not connected to internet, you dont have to worry about being infected with RAT or Password Recovery Tool.

Ok, so for those who have internet connection & think they are being infected with a Trojan.

Tutorial starts:

1st
Now every program has their own process which can be seen on task manager. So the First thing to do is to find out which process the Trojan is being attached to.If you see some unknown process search that on google. A good hacker will always makes sure he hides its process with a Windows based Process for eg. svchost.exe or something like that.

2nd
If you cant find, then the next thing you can do is use cmd.
how to open cmd prompt
Click on Start--->Run-->Type Cmd

3rd
Once Command Prompt is opened. use this command
netstat -an |find /i "listening"
Note: The NETSTAT command will show you whatever ports are open or in use, but it is NOT a port scanning tool!
Now we wonder What this Command does?
this command will show all the opening ports. Now check for any unknown port.

4th
YOu can skip step 3 if you want, and can do this instead.
Open command prompt and type
netstat -b

Now this command will show you the active connections with the process with their PID(Process Identifier) and also the packets.
Look out for SYN Packets & the Foreign address its been connecting with , check the process its been associated with , check the ports also. If you find that its connecting to some unknown ports, then you can say you have been backdoored.

5th
Go to your task manager.
On the top of it, click on View---> select Column---> Tick on PID(Process Identifier).
Match the suspicious Process with the Processes In task manager, check PID also.

Now most of the RATs resides on Start up. how to delete them from start up?

1st
Go to regedit ---> HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Run
On the Right hand side, check for the process name which you find on step 4. if its not their. Check at
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
OR
Open Cmd prompt & type start msconfig
Go to Startup tab, you can check the startup process there.

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)

Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this)
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
Workstation
To disable these services:

Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to 'Disable"

TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE

System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore:

Open Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on System
Click on the System Restore tab
Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'
Click 'Ok'

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-click on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then click 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and click 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

DISABLE PREFETCH ON LOW MEMORY SYSTEMS

Prefetch is designed to speed up program launching by preloading programs into memory - not a good idea is memory is in short supply, as it can make programs hang. To disable prefetch:

1. Click 'Start' then 'Run'

2. Type in 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'

3. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\'

4. Right-click on "EnablePrefetcher" and set the value to '0'

5. Reboot.

I am not very good at digital stuff and I don't know exactly what the video format is, such as mp4, wmv, avi, and so on. I only know my iPod accepts mp4 video, my windows movie make supports wmv and if you want to upload your videos to youtube.com you have to make it into flv I think. And if you have a Camcorder video I think not many player can

play it so just convert them.
