UFC fines Anderson Silva $50,000 for media-event no-show

Anderson Silva was fined $50,000 for refusing to take part in a planned pre-UFC 162 media event. He was scheduled to talk with a few of Los Angeles' largest media outlets on Tuesday but ultimately skipped the session and instead flew home to his native Brazil.

"We had a full media day set up for him in Los Angeles, and he just decided he didn't want to do it, so he's being fined $50,000," UFC President Dana White told USA TODAY Sports and (www.mmajunkie.com).

"He doesn't like talking to the media, but it's part of his contractual obligation," White said. "Everybody wants more money, more money, more money, but nobody wants to sell the fight or go out and talk to the media. Talking to the media is part of your job, whether you like it or not."

"Nick Diaz didn't show up for the press conference," White said. "This was just a smaller media day, but it's still not acceptable, so we're fining him $50,000."

"I want to fight GSP because I'm a competitor," Hendricks said. "I want to fight the best guys in my weight class. But also, the belt is more important than GSP, and that's really what I'm looking at.

White said he believed the blow was legal and commended Winslow for stepping in when she did.

"Her hand might have been down for a second," White said. "First of all, it's a stupid rule anyway. It's the dumbest rule in the sport, number one. Number two, the referee was right there while the fight was going on. Not that that's one of my favorite referees – there's a lot that that referee doesn't see – but I do not agree that was a bad stoppage. It was a good stoppage. Was it illegal, what happened? If she saw it or didn't see it, that fight needed to be stopped either way in my opinion."

"I'm not a big fan of the ref who reffed that fight; there's a lot of stuff that that referee doesn't see," White said. "But I have absolutely no beef whatsoever with that stoppage."

On "The MMA Hour," Mitrione called Fox a "lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak."

"The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on 'The MMA Hour,'" the statement read. "The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione's UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect."

Mitrione repeated referred to Fox as "he" and "him" and said he was "appalled" by Fox fighting other women.

"It's an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that," Mitrione said. "The woman that's fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again because that's disgusting and I'm appalled by that."
