Brock Lesnar started his career in MMA and won his first fight in June 2007 at a K1 Dynamite event. He then signed with the UFC in October 2007 and instantl met with a world of MMA fans that were not to happy with the former WWE stars arrival into the sport. He lost his UFC debut against Frank Mir but since the loss to Mir he has remained undefeated. He dominated Heath Herring in a unnanimous decision victory and despite the outcry from hardcore MMA fans he was given a shot and won the UFC Heavyweight Championship in a fight with Randy Couture. He then avenged his loss to Mir by way of TKO at UFC, his fighting career was put on hold, due to diverticulitis in late 2009, Lesnar returned to defeat the Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin at UFC 116 via submission. He is currently set to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.

Many MMA fans do not care much for Brock Lesnar, I assume it is his arrogance and the fact that not many hard core fans like when the WWE,WWF is compared to the sport. I for one do not like the WWE comparison. Why you say?.. Because SPOILER ALERT- its fake and there still are quite a few people that think UFC,WWE, MMA are all the same thing. I prefer when MMA is discussed as a sport between professional Athletes instead of as a spectacle (ie James Toney pummeled).

I do not have any problems with some of the smack talk as long as it is not completely overboard. There is no doubt that Lesnar learned in the WWE that is does not matter if people pay to see you win or pay to see you lose, just that they pay to see you. Tito Ortiz was a master of generating interest in his fights with the same type of attitude.

Many people said that Lesnar was an amateur not deserving of an early shot at the title tend to forget Lesnar is an accomplished wrestler, winning the 2000 NCAA heavyweight wrestling championship and placing second in 1999, losing in the finals to future New England Patriots offensive lineman Stephen Neal.

In the beginning, I really did not care for Lesnar but I will admit that he really impressed me with his win over Shane Carwin. The win showed that not only was he strong physically but had the ability and heart to overcome adversity when he was on the losing end of the match.

Regardless if you like him or hate him, he has become a valuable asset to MMA. Brock has quickly put himself at the top of the MMA Heavyweight Div (not something he did running his mouth), continues to fill seats and generates a lot of interest and money that allows the sport of MMA to grow.

OK- Brock Haters it is your turn

I am now home resting with my family. I want to thank all the people who supported me and all the people with team Irish MMA, team Gurgel, and team Sityodtong for all the help preparing for the match.

I left the fight in the puddles of sweat on the floor of Sityodtong. I was over trained and never took the rest to recuperate that I should have. Within minutes of the first round my legs felt like I had just ran a marathon and they never came back. Today my thighs feel as though I spent the weekend lifting weights. I am known to have good footwork but had none that night.

The accidental head clashes caused most of the damage to the right side of my face and eye. I have three lacerations, two over the right eye and one under it. My CAT scan came back good. No breaks or fractures. The eye itself is being looked at. I had my second appointment today and my next one is in a week. Although I’m having some cloudy vision it is much better than it was initially and with rest it should return to 100 percent.

I apologize to my supporters, team, friends and sponsors for not performing to my full potential. Being recognized for fight of the night honors is great and that’s why I fight- to entertain- but I wish I could have done so the way I have done in previous fights. Thank you again.

A pint of sweat saves a gallon of blood…
General S. Patton

Marcus

source: pressherald.com

Although I am a huge fan of Nate Diaz, there is no denying that Davis is a tough matchup for anyone and he always shows up ready to fight hard till the end. Good to hear that there was no permanent damage to his eye and I look forward to seeing him back in the Octagon.

I was a fan, many will say that I am jumping off the bandwagon. I am jumping off not because he lost to a better fighter, it is because Penn did not show up to fight and this is not the first time. I believed all the talk from BJ after he obtained the LW title and against my better judgement I thought he had finally made the commitment to improve his cardio / commitment to MMA. Once again we are hearing the same old song and dance, honestly I would rather be a fan of someone who understands the value of hard work.

He does not look motivated anymore, when I watched the Edgar fights, I never g0t the feeling that he was in it to win nor did he look as if he would make any type of sacrifice to do so, maybe he’s tired of MMA. His arrogance probably makes him think that he needs to start fighting in the WW division. Maybe it will motivate him but I am at the point where I do not care. If they were to give him another opponent, I say put him in the cage with Clay Guida and see what happens. For me BJ Penn has a history of inconsistency and is the MMA equivalent of Bipolar. BJ Penn fans were his undoing, everyone said he was the greatest and he believed it… tons of natural talent but 0% heart, determination or the willingness to put in the hard work. LAZY…….So, this will be my memorial to the successful BJ Penn, RIP.

Everyones favorite Female MMA Star has been missing from the MMA scene since her loss to Cyborg way back in August of 2009 and many wonder if she will be making a return to the cage.

Carano trained under MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture at his Xtreme Couture training facility in Las Vegas, Nevada and went 7-0 until she was defeated by the super tough and current Strikeforce female champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. Carano has chosen instead to focus on an acting career, and Couture believes that it is unlikely that fans will see Carano back in action again.

“Gina just did a movie that’s going to be coming out soon,” Couture said at a Q&A session with fans before the UFC 117 event. “I haven’t seen her in the gym, haven’t talked to her in nine months. I’m not sure where she’s at. I know the movie is going to be very big for her and I’d be very surprised to see her back in the cage.”

However, nobody really knows at this point, CEO Scott Coker is holding out hope and had this to say back inMay,-

“Carano still has a home here with Strikeforce and we look forward to her return,” said Coker, who stated that he would reach out to Carano when she had returned home and taken some time off after filming had wrapped. “Cung [Le] waited about 18 months before he came back, so let [Carano] go be a movie star for now.”

Coker also went on to say that Carano’s contract is a multi-fight, multi-year deal that extends well beyond what some have speculated. Coker looks forward to Carano’s return and believes that she will be part of the company’s bright future.

Carano has a starring role in “Haywire,” a Steven Soderbergh film set for release in early 2011, so her decision may be based on how well her acting career pans out. For now we can only wait and see if this talented beauty makes a return

Randy Couture defeats James Toney by submission (arm triangle) at 3.19mins of Rd1-

The 41-year-old boxing world champion James Toney made his mixed martial arts debut Saturday night at UFC 118 and teaches the 47-year old UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture a lesson; boxers do not deserve a free Octagon pass to face the elite MMA athletes. Toney proved that an MMA amateur, even an amateur who is an elite professional boxer, will not succeed in the UFC. Boxers have no idea what to do on the ground; but I think Couture already knew this. Couture introduced James Toney to “MMA for Dummies- The Easy Three Step Plan for Defeating Loud Mouthed Boxers in the Octagon”.

Step 1- Takedown: At about 15 seconds into the first round, Randy shot for a single leg take-down that sent the boxing champ stumbling to the canvas and Couture effortlessly achieved the mounted position that signaled the beginning of the end.

Step 2- Ground and Pound: Upon achieving the dominant position, Couture began to soften up Toney with some ground and pound, taking his time and picking his shots all while the boxer flopped on the canvas like a fish out of water.

Step 3- Submission: “The Natural” began to look for his submission and upon choosing the Head and Arm Triangle as his method of victory, he began to position himself. Couture calmly left the mounted position to sink in the choke and at 3:19 in the first round James had no choice but to submit. The boxer as if to punctuate his status as an amateur, did not even seem aware that a tap is usually the preferred method to cry uncle, instead he waved his hand to the referee.

Moral of the story: Probably not a great idea to talk about how easily your going to knock out every MMA athlete that calls the Octagon home and then come out on the losing end without ever landing a single punch.

I say it is time to close the book on the MMA vs Boxing debate – keep boxers in boxing and MMA fighters in MMA.

Post fight remarks summed up the match-

Couture- “This was exactly what I trained to do”

Toney- “He caught me on the ground”

Frankie Edgar defeats BJ Penn by unanimous decision (50-45 x5)

In what was mostly an uneventful carbon copy of the first Penn vs Edgar, just like their UFC 112 bout Edgar was too fast on his feet allowing him to win the stand-up and frustrated BJ Penn who looked slow and flat footed. Frankie Edgar was able to take B.J. Penn down several times throughout the fight. Unlike their first fight, Penn had no instances that looked as if he was taking the initiative and it allowed Edgar to win all five rounds on the judge’s scorecards. BJ Penn looked slow, had no success even when on the ground and never even came close to obtaining a submission hold. I am not sure what is next for him, but BJ Penn seemed far removed from the fighter that dominated Diego Sanchez.

In other action, Nate Diaz looked good in his second showing at 170, he busted up Marcus Davis and left Davis with an eye the size of a softball then locked in a choke rendered the “Irish Hand Grenade” unconcious in the third round.

Gray Maynard was able to use his wrestling to control the fight against Kenny Florian for the win on the judge’s scorecards and earning himself a shot at the LW title held by Frankie Edgar.

Joe Lauzon ran an absolute MMA clinic on former TUF 5 castoff “I need a Colonic”, “I can’t make weight but like cake” Gabe Ruediger. In a matter of minutes, Lauzon slammed Gabe to the canvas, landed hard punches and elbows and then finished the fight off with a by the book MMA-101 armbar. Reudiger needs to immediately return to the smaller shows and accept that the UFC is not the place for him.

The four-woman single elimination welterweight (135 pound) tournament took place throughout the course of the evening’s fight card and was comprised of four top female contenders, Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala.

Since the contestants faced the possibility of fighting twice in one night, Strikeforce used two rounds lasting three minutes each during the early matches, instead of the MMA standard of three 5-minute rounds. The final had three rounds with each round also lasting three minutes .

To earn her place in the final, Tate won a decision over Maiju Kujala (4-2) in her semifinal fight. After a close first round, Tate landed multiple solid strikes in the second round and sealed the win by living up to her nickname with the late takedown that ensured her the decision victory.

Akano reached the finals with a submission of Carina Damm (15-4) in the second round of her semifinal bout. Damm spent much of the first round and part of the second on the ground in top position, but Akano’s persistent submission attempts finally paid off and allowed her to prevail as she locked up a triangle with an armbar, forcing Damm to tapout.

In the first round of the final, Akano had an opportunity with a solid toehold, but Tate grabbed Akano’s arm, stopping her from fully twisting the ankle and Tate was able to eventually break free from the hold and escape the painful submission attempt. Tate, then proceeded to earn the decision victory, she was able to control Akano on the ground, take Akano’s back during both rounds and forced her to defend against a armlock attempt during the closing moments of the bout.

Once Tate was declared the winner she commented on her performance,

“My submission defense is definitely one of my strong points,” Tate said. “I felt really confident coming out against her. She was the one I wanted to fight the most out of the tournament. … Beating her was definitely monumental in my career.”

Tate’s win in the four-woman tournament earned her a shot at the womens 135lb title but she will have to wait for the outcome of Sarah Kaufman (11-0 MMA, 3-0 SF) vs Marloes Coenen (17-4 MMA, 1-1 SF). Coenen, was defeated in January when she challenged 145-pound champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for her belt, but she will drop down to a more natural weight of 135 pounds and take on the current 135lb champion, Sarah Kaufman. The exact date has yet to be set for Kaufman vs Coenen.

Tate previously faced Kaufman and lost by decision in a May 2009 Strikeforce match, since that loss Tate has won five consecutive fights and could end up with the opportunity to earn redemption against the last person to defeat her if Kaufman successfully defends the belt against Coenen. [tubepress mode="playlist" playlistValue="C1EE21DC88712B61" resultsPerPage="3" thumbHeight="75" thumbWidth="125"]

Miesha Tate made a card-high $18,000 for her performance, “Takedown” received $8,000 for her win in the women’s welterweight tournament’s opening round, as well as an additional $10,000 for both making it to and winning the tournament.

In the main event, Joe “Diesel” Riggs (33-11, 1 no contest) defeated Louis Taylor (6-2). During the third round, Riggs caught Taylor with a heavy right hand, took him to the mat, obtained the crucifix position and started landing heavy shots until Taylor was forced to tap.

After the fight, Riggs called out 170-pound champion Nick Diaz, who previously lost a decision to Riggs at UFC 57, back in February 2006 that led to a post fight incident . After the fight, the two were taken to the hospital for observation and post-fight tests. It was there that Diaz confronted Riggs and proceeded to punch him in the face. Diaz then tackled Riggs into a wall and began kneeing him, the police arrived and separated them. No charges were ever filed by the police. So, I would say there is some bad blood between the two.

I am sure dad must have been proud.

Dominick Cruz was able to hold on the bantamweight title as he outpointed and repeated his victory over Joseph Benavidez in the rematch of a great fight that took place at WEC 42 last summer.

Cruz maintained control of the fight with his constant movement and his ability to score with the takedown. The champ ended each round with a takedown followed by a flurry of punches.

Benavidez was able to land some hard counter punches, but he was never able to time the in and out movement of Cruz and he was denied every one of his takedown attempts.

Dominick Cruz basically went in and executed the same game plan he used to win their previous bout. The match was scored as a split decision(47-48, 48-47, 49-46) , but honestly it was very apparent that Cruz had done more than enough for the win.

For Cruz, the next challenger for his title looks to have been decided as Scott Jorgensen came out on top in his fight of the night victory over the tough as nails Brad Pickett.

The two bantamweights put on a great show as they traded heavy shots in a fifteen minute war. Pickett appeared to be winning on his feet but it was the wrestling and takedowns that allowed Jorgensen to have his hand raised in the end.

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis looked very well rounded in a victory over Shane Roller. Pettis was able to stuff the takedown and executed some flashy but effective strikes. Pettis not only stopped most of Roller’s takedowns, but finished a few of his own. It was clear that his training with Ben Askren had paid dividends. Roller was never able to execute his gameplan and the wrestler ended up in a striking battle. Pettis was very effective at getting back to his feet and eventually caught Roller in a fight winning triangle late in the third round.

“Showtime” with his impressive performance appears to have earned a shot at the lightweight belt currently held by Ben “Smooth” Henderson. Pettis even called out to Ben Henderson, who was sitting cageside, that he wants his shot. Henderson answered him back saying, “I see you, Anthony. I see you.”

Chad Mendes used his wrestling and smothered Cub Swanson for three rounds in their featherweight bout. Swanson had no answer for the wrestling of Mendes. It was apparent that after three rounds of Swanson laying on his back that Mendes had earned the victory.

Bart Palaszewski used his experience and cruised to a victory early in the second round after landing some hard shots that sent the young, up and coming prospect Zach Micklewright to the canvas for the TKO victory.
