The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission released Thursday the salary figures for last Saturday’s UFC 118 event at the TD Garden. The biggest surprise is, without a doubt, James Toney earning more than any other fighter on the card. “Lights Out” walked away with a cool $500,000 for his 199-second MMA debut.

His opponent, Randy Couture, earned $250,000 for his win, while lightweight champion Frankie Edgar walked away with his belt and $96,000.

Of course, the salaries reported to the commission do not necessarily represent a fighter’s final earnings once sponsorships and extra bonuses are factored in.

The purses (show/win bonus) are below.

Frankie Edgar: $96,000 ($48,000 win bonus) def. B.J. Penn: $150,000

Randy Couture: $250,000 (no win bonus) def. James Toney: $500,000

Demian Maia: $68,000 ($34,000 win bonus) def. Mario Miranda: $8,000

Gray Maynard: $46,000 ($23,000 win bonus) def. Kenny Florian: $65,000

Nate Diaz: $60,000 ($30,000 win bonus) def. Marcus Davis: $31,000

Joe Lauzon: $24,000 ($12,000 win bonus) def. Gabe Ruediger: $8,000

Nik Lentz: $22,000 ($11,000 win bonus) def. Andre Winner: $10,000

Bellator Fighting Championships crowned a new Featherweight World Champion in front of a boisterous crowd at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. Fans were treated to a full card of electrifying fights that included one of the best comebacks in the history of the sport.

In the night’s main event the Bellator World Featherweight Championship was on the line as “The Baddest Man on the Planet”, Joe Warren, took on defending Bellator World Champion Joe “The Hammer” Soto in the first ever defense of a Bellator World Title.

The first round was all Soto, as the undefeated champion put on a boxing clinic, delivering a series of devastating punches to what appeared to be a completely outmatched Warren. As the first round came to a close, a battered and bruised Warren headed to his corner shaken, but not discouraged.

In round two, Warren stormed out of the gate on a mission, delivering a overhand right to the head of Soto that sent “The Hammer” reeling to the canvas. After scrambling back to his feet, it was a crushing knee to the chin that finished the fight, establishing Warren as the newly crowned Bellator World Featherweight Champion.

“I told you I was going to win,” proclaimed an overjoyed Warren after the fight. “I came in here and got the job done. I’m super happy to be a World Champion. This is the first time I’ve knocked someone out – there is a lot more to come.”

Chairman and CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships, Bjorn Rebney, was thoroughly impressed by Joe Warren’s heart and courage, stating, “If you saw Joe Warren’s fight with Patricio Pitbull in Season 2, most people would not of made it out of that first round, but Warren has that immeasurable heart that allows him to push forward. Tonight was no different. When I sat down with Warren a year ago he told me that he was willing to die in there to get that title. Most people just say that, but when he says it you believe it. What a great performance. We have a tremendously talented and rapidly evolving featherweight champion.”

Kicking off the night was a Quarterfinal Bantamweight Tournament matchup between Ed “Wild” West and Bryan Goldsby. Both fighters began feeling each other out on the feet before West attempted a series of dazzling leg lock submissions attempts that impressed the crowd and the judges.

In the final period, “Wild” West came out swinging for the fences, connecting with a number of heavy strikes to Goldsby, which ultimately led to a unanimous decision win for the talented West.

In other Bantamweight Tournament action, Nick “Garfield” Mamalis took on Zach “Fun Size” Makovsky a grueling back and forth three round battle. Both fighters flexed their wrestling skills in a match filled with crisp strikes and impressive slams. The momentum swung back and forth, with Markovsky shaking off everything Mamalis tried to throw at him early. However, Mamalis landed powerful takedown slam in the second round that left Makovsky in a daze.

As the fight moved to the third and final round, Fun Size dug deep and secured a rear-naked-choke that led Makovsky to an impressive 30-27 unanimous decision victory.

Rounding out the Bantamweight Tournament was a quarterfinal match between submission specialist Ulysses “Useless” Gomez and Travis “Hurricane” Reddinger. Gomez controlled the first round with consistent leg kicks and looked to end the fight early by applying a tight guillotine to Reddinger, but was unsuccessful in his attempt.

Rounds two and three saw similar action, with each fighter delivering numerous takedowns throughout the fight while Gomez controlled the bulk of the action on his way to a hard fought split decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

“This is what Bellator is all about; anyone can change the outcome of a fight with a single knee or punch in our tournament style format,” said Rebney. “It was another spectacular event in San Antonio.

You can catch an action-packed Bellator 27 highlight show on NBC late Saturday night.

Below is a full list of results from Bellator 27:

Gilbert Jimenez def. Aaron Barringer via Unanimous Decision

With news recently breaking that Yushin Okami would test his chin against Vitor Belfort this November, fans of Chris Leben were left wondering what might be next for the Ultimate Fighter O.G. with “The Phenom” off the table.

Enter Wanderlei Silva.

In a match-up sounding as much like the title of a horror movie as a MMA bout, “The Axe Murderer” vs. “The Crippler” seems to be a likely possibility down the road so long as the former PRIDE champion gets his way. Silva spoke to MMAFighting
about his desire to fight Leben over the UFC 118 weekend.

“He won’t pass the first two rounds with me,” said Silva of Leben. “I saw his fight with (Yoshihiro) Akiyama. It was a great match, and he beat him in the final round. He’s a tough guy. He had only fought two weeks earlier. I think it will be perfect for my next fight. If he wants me, I’m going to fight him for sure.”

The latter part of the Brazilian’s statement appeared to be in reference to Leben calling him out after defeating Akiyama at UFC 116 last July. Silva was originally scheduled to face the Asian superstar at the event prior to pulling out a few weeks prior with a knee injury.

The thought of Silva and Leben trading shots is one sure to excite fans. Both men are known for their heavy hands and reckless abandon in the ring. In fifty-seven combined victories the two have knocked out thirty-six of the opponents they’ve beaten.

While the UFC may not have had time to swap out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in the official event poster for UFC 119, the world’s biggest MMA promotion wasted no time in released the trailer for the September 25th event.

Mir and Big Nog were scheduled to headline the card, however Noguira was forced out with multiple injuries and was recently replaced by CC.

Cro Cro submitted Pat Barry in his last Octagon appearance at UFC 115. CC, who was once considered one of the sport’s deadliest strikers, has since recruited Barry’s services to help him get back to the land of the elites.

Mir was thrashed by Shane Carwin the last time he took the stage. While he temporarily danced with the idea of dropping to the 205-pound division, he opted to remain in the class where he’s a multi-time champ.

Nogueria was put down by fast-rising Cain Velasquez in his last outing at UFC 110. The victory earned the stud a shot at Brock Lesnar’s heavyweight strap in October.

No timetable has been set for Nogueira’s return.

UFC 119 takes place inside the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The show marks the organization’s debut in the Hoosier state.

Unabashed welterweight villain Josh Koscheck will once again step foot inside another hornets nest when he battles reigning 170-pound deity, Georges St. Pierre, in front of an adoring hometown crown at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on Dec. 11.

MMACanada.net today delivered the good news about the UFC 124 main event’s venue and location.

“Kos” recently wrapped up his stint as coach on Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), coaching against “Rush” on the Spike TV reality show in a spot he earned with a unanimous decision win over Paul “Semtex” Daley at UFC 113: “Machida vs. Shogun 2″ earlier this year.

The former collegiate wrestler and longtime UFC veteran has strung together three consecutive wins since a surprise loss to Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson,” stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” back in September 2009 and then choking out Anthony Johnson at UFC 106: “Ortiz vs. Griffin 2.”

Aside from his success inside the Octagon, his role in the December title fight can also be attributed to St. Pierre’s ability to handily dispose of every would-be contender over the past two years, including AKA team mate Jon Fitch.

Star-divide

Of course both fighters have evolved since their first dance at UFC 74: “Respect” way back in August 2007. GSP cruised to a three round unanimous decision win in their non-title affair, the Canadian’s first fight after coughing up the strap to Matt Serra at UFC 69: “Shootout.”

It’s been nothing but easy street since then, rattling off six straight wins and barely breaking a sweat in the process. In fact, the only knock on St. Pierre has been his decision to play it safe in recent bouts, employing a suffocating and seemingly unstoppable wrestling-based offense to neutralize his opponents and sweep the judge’s scorecards.

Can he finish Koscheck and re-establish himself as the sport’s most complete fighter? Or will we see a welterweight version of Wrestlemania?

We’ll find out on December 11.

We’re only two days away from boxing legend James Toney’s highly anticipated mixed martial arts debut at UFC 118. While “Lights Out” is looking to start off his new career on a good note, former street brawler turned MMA fighter Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will attempt to slide into the spot Toney recently vacated.

“I feel like a baby all over again,” said the 36-year-old told ESPNNewYork.com. “I’m thinking about this at night. I’m gonna be a problem in the heavyweight division. I’m going to be coming in with a bad demeanor. I want to see what it’s like to break some ribs, break a jaw with one punch.”

Kimbo leaves behind a 4-2 professional MMA record, and although he claims the mixed martial arts door isn’t complete slammed shut, his lack of a ground game will pretty much solidify his permanent exit.

“This is a career move,” he said. “I love fighting. I like to knock people the [expletive] out. I love engaging. Maybe some people think I’m crazy.”

Outside of the fact his future adversaries won’t be executing any double-leg takedowns inside the squared-circle, Kimbo has also noticed a significant amount of disenchantment within the boxing ranks and he’s fixin’ to rectify the situation, STAT.

“I’m safety first driving, wear my seatbelt,” Slice said. “Not in the ring. These fighters these days, they’re complacent, lazy. I’m hungry. I just dropped three of my kids off at tutoring. It’s expensive!”

Helping to support his career change is a familiar face in Gary Shaw, former EliteXC figurehead that originally gave Kimbo his shot in MMA. Shaw told ESPN he had just inked his former/current client to a contract and the bearded beast should be making his pro boxing debut “sometime between October and December.”

Kimbo was cut from the UFC after suffering a 2ndRound TKO loss to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113 this past May.

Longtime veteran Vladimir Matyushenko has secured his spot with the MMA juggernaut that is the UFC.

Since his inception into the world of mixed martial arts, Matyushenko has experienced the full gamut that the sport as had to offer, the highs and lows. The former IFL light heavyweight champion holds signature wins over Jamal Patterson, Pedro Rizzo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueria. He’s challeneged for the UFC’s 205-pound strap against then champion Tito Ortiz, was a contender in it’s heavyweight division, but has never been able to secure a top spot in the organization.

While his second stint in the UFC was fairing well, with commanding victories over Eliot Marshall and Igor Pokrajac, Matyushenko appeared to be on the fast track towards contender status once again. That is, until the IFL champ locked horns with 205-spitfire Jon Jones. The New Yorker was able to mop the floor with “The Janitor”, easily handling Matyushenko to the ground before locking up Vlad with a crucifix on the ground, before delivering rapid fire elbows to the head, halting a stop to the contest.

While some have been cut from the UFC for less, Matyushenko has now officially secured his spot in the promotion and will now look to work his way back up the ranks, once again. Though at the ripe age of 39, Vlad’s time is limited and he will have to work quickly.

Matyushenko’s representation, Alchemist Management broke the news that the Belarusian signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC. And interesting enough, thanks to MMAFighting for having initiated this, Vlad’s next fight will signify the first time that “The Janitor” would fight four times, consecutively inside the UFC.

So, who should Vlad’s next opponent be? Who would you like to see him up against next? And has the loss to Jones set him back considerably, or just a little bit–considering where Jones has been heading in his UFC career.
