Master the basics first and you will never, ever have to go back and waste a ton of time trying to fix any bad habits. Notice how I said "trying". Unfortunately, some people are never able to fully fix things and that severely limits their ability to grow as a mixed martial artist. You can save yourself a ton of time and an insane amount of effort by starting your training the right way.
There's definitely no shortage of information out there. Magazines, books, internet forums, and other web sites are filled with MMA content. That itself creates a serious problem for beginning mixed martial artists! Trying to choose what to practice out of those thousands of techniques available on YouTube and those other video sites is impossible!
So if you've made the wise decision to invest your time by staying on this site, I'm going to reveal to you a complete, easy-to-follow program that will build you an incredibly strong foundational MMA skill set. A program that once completed will enable you to train at any MMA school in the world and feel comfortable right away.

Tons of Technique without Structure = Confusion!

I created this website to put an end to the confusion that beginning mixed martial artists face. There's so much info out there about what techniques to practice, what workouts to follow, what exercises to do, and what methods work best, it's next to impossible to get a clear picture of what truly works and will be a waste of time.
Some guys are creating websites that share techniques, drills and tips but without a well structured training system designed with the intent of building your skills from the ground up, there is absolutely no way that you will retain what they are showing. In fact, the more techniques they post up, the more confusing it gets.
Training with an instructor to guide you along the way is crucial. However, jumping into a group class setting when you begin training isn't always the best way to learn.
Some instructors find teaching the basics boring and seem to always be showing the newest and coolest techniques in class. That type of an instructor will not help you get the results you're looking for.
Also, in a large group setting, an instructor is often forced to teach you things beyond your level because there are students with much more experience than you in the class as well.
In the worst case scenario, an instructor may never have mastered the basics themself. Without a doubt, it will be impossible for them to teach you how to do it.
Unfortunately I see the last example being the case more often as many instructors --some with very limited training-- open new MMA schools trying to capitalize on the popularity of the UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts.
That's a little scary for anyone looking to start training!

Dana White likes to fight. He actually did it in the ring for a while as a kid before he realized he wasn't good enough to make a living at it. He's channeled that aggression  into fighting for his business. The business of fighting. White wasn't headed down the primrose path so he had to claw his way to where he is now. Let's just say he still has a little chip on his shoulder towards those born with a silver spoon in their mouth.  "People make a big deal out of the fact I didn’t get a college
degree," White told Vegas Seven magazine. "But if
you went to any college right now, I guarantee half of the kids would
have no
idea what they want to do. None. They are just wandering around college
because
someone told them they have to go or they would never amount to [expletive]
anything. These kids leave college with an education that they can’t
fucking
use, because they have no idea what the [expletive] they want to do."To initially purchase UFC for million, White did work connections with Vegas power family, The Fertittas. He says that his triumph is your classic Las Vegas success story. "The one thing about this
town is that young people can make it big, and it’s always been that way, unlike
the East Coast or wherever," said White. "Old money doesn’t run everything here; young people,
if they work hard, can make it."I'm sure the country club crowd loved to hear White spew venom their way. Especially those who criticize his sport.  "If you don’t like it, and you’re not into it, [expletive] it—don’t watch it," said White.
"I don’t like golf. You know what I do? I don’t [expletive] watch it! What’s golf? A
bunch of rich dicks walking around in stupid clothes and hitting a [expletive] ball.
If we stopped that [expletive], we could build housing for people who can’t afford it
on that land. And you have a problem with UFC?" Classic White. In a great twist, Esquire Magazine recently shot White and his version of "Entourage: UFC" trying to hit golf balls off the roof of the Zuffa Building in Las Vegas. Let's just say, White might need a swing coach (3:22 mark)

UFC 116 hype: Carwin's media work worth following this week

Today is UFC 116 workout day at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. That means some of the top fighters on the card will roll through some drills for the fans and then give the media the opportunity for interviews and one-on-one's. Before you say, "who gives a [expletive]!" Keep in mind, it's the final chance for most newspaper, internet and television outlets to grab material to "help hype/sell the fight." The next two days is when the big push is made and could possibly turn the event into the most purchased MMA pay-per-views in history. Rumors have swirled the last few days that Lesnar and Carwin are both going to turn down all interview requests at workout day. For Lesnar, it's not disimilar from what her has done in the past. He's spoken to the media but makes it short and sweet. Carwin on the other hand is going to be an interesting follow. He ranted a bit on his blog a few weeks ago about being unhappy with Zuffa management and some of the criticism lobbed his way. He tried to smooth things over on last week's conference call but when he spoke with Ben Fowlkes from Fanhouse, it sounded as if Carwin still has some issues.  "No, I think that we have had two
UFC's, one WEC, Strikeforce, Bellator Finals and a TUF Finale that has
occupied
the media's attention. I think to say that I am not "selling" a fight
when I
have been selling this fight for almost a year is pretty asinine," Carwin said when asked about criticism from management and if Lesnar got preferential treatment. "I am
not
overly worried about the media attention or the fame.
Carwin made it very public that he's only making a guarantee ,000 for this main event fight that may help pull in in excess of .5 million PPV buys. He was asked if he wins the belt is it time to get a new deal from the UFC. "I do not think so. Beating Brock does not make you Brock.
I will still need to insult most of the fighters in my division, flip off the
fans, insult the biggest sponsors the UFC has and then and only then will I
renegotiate with Zuffa."That was a nice shot at Lesnar. Carwin went on to say he was happy with the way he's been treated but also made an interesting comments about his interim UFC heavyweight title belt.  "Dana (White) and Lorenzo (Fertitta) have taken good care of my family and
I. They have given us more than they are obligated to and we are happy," said Carwin. "My manager always says it is not about making money when you fight but
to make money when you are not fighting. We really do not have our hands out for
anything more – if it comes we will take it and smile. I am
honored to be working for the UFC and representing them in the "fake" champions
category."We'll see what happens today. My feeling is that once on the ground around the media, Carwin will speak and do what he can to hype the fight. But this reluctance to be bombastic and play the role of the baddest man on the planet may have some with Zuffa thinking they're better off with a Lesnar win.  If this is a quiet week with the behemoths, what heights can the fight reach? It's also worth noting that ESPN and its MMA show "MMA Live" will not be on the ground in Las Vegas for the event. That's too bad. It would've been huge for MMA to have another one hour lead-in, preview show on ESPN2 like it did before UFC 114. That had a gigantic effect on the PPV sales, that in some circles were rumored to have approached 1.3 million buys.

Phil Davis is undefeated in his MMA career, but that doesn't mean he earned his abs from training to fight. As he shows here, it's clearly from using late night informercial product, Ab Circle Pro. Bellator: Askren brings funk to MMA, beats Hornbuckle for title

Ben Askren, an Olympic wrestler and two-time national champion for the University of Missouri, beat Dan Hornbuckle in the Bellator welterweight finals. Askren scored the unanimous decision 30-27 on all three judges' cards in Kansas City on Thursday night. The fight started out contentious, as Hornbuckle didn't touch gloves with Askren before the fight began. But as soon as the bell rang, Askren took control and didn't let go. He used his Olympic-level wrestling skills dominate Hornbuckle while still landing strike after strike on the more-experienced Hornbuckle. Anything but lay and pray, Askren stayed active in picking apart Hornbuckle. Three times in the fight, Hornbuckle threatened with an armbar and two Kimura submission attempts, but Askren had no problem getting out of each attempt.  With the win, Askren now will have a chance to fight Lyman Good, Bellator's season one welterweight champ, for the Bellator belt. Askren wrestled for a spot on the U.S. freestyle wrestling world team this past weekend but lost to the eventual champ. The spot against Good and 0,000 for winning the Bellator tournament is a nice consolation prize. "Keep my belt warm, shine it once a week, and enjoy it while you've got it because it's mine, baby," Askren said to Good in the postfight interview. Askren's win over Hornbuckle for the welterweight title was the only Bellator tournament bout on the card in Kansas City. In non-tournament action, Jose Vega, Raphael Davis and Lisa Ward were also big winners.Vega, fighting out of nearby Knob Noster, Mo., notched a 39-second knockout over Jerrod Card. With his impressive win, Vega likely earned a spot in the Bellator bantamweight tournament, which will run this fall.  Raphael Davis easily won over Demetrius Richards with a first-round submission due to strikes. Davis took control of Richards on the ground, and while on Richards' back, threw punch after punch until Richards tapped out at 2:51 into the first round. Davis seemed frustrated that he fought an opponent who tapped out so quickly. In the postfight interview, he asked, "Who taps out from strikes?Lisa Ward also scored a quick win. Stephanie Frausto, the younger sister of Strikeforce fighter Zoila, had no answer for Ward's wrestling. Ward easily sunk in a rear naked choke. Frausto passed out from the choke, giving Ward the win at 2:01 in the first round. After the fight, Ward said that she wanted a spot in Bellator's female 115-lb. tourney this fall to get another shot at Megumi Fujii, the favorite headed into the tourney. Next week, Bellator will wrap up season two with their featherweight finals, a bout between Joe Warren and Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, and middleweight finals which will feature Alexander Shlemenko and Bryan Baker.

Dana White's "stunning" announcement? Vuvuzela noisemakers banned at UFC 116

In what's likely more of a good-natured publicity stunt than a vital new policy, UFC officials today announced a ban of vuvuzelas at this weekend's UFC 116 event.

Vuvuzelas are horn-shaped noisemakers popularized (and perhaps overused) during this year's FIFA World Cup.

UFC president Dana White is credited with implementing the ban.

The UFC has decided that vuvuzelas, the awesome noisemakers that are ubiquitous at the World Cup, have no home in the Octagon. According to a press release from the UFC, vuvuzelas won't be allowed in MGM Grand Garden Arena. “This decision was pretty simple for me,” White said. “Vuvuzelas make the most horrific sound I’ve ever heard. I’d rather let Brock punch me in the face than hear 15,000 people blow on those things. This is the biggest heavyweight fight we’ve ever done. We’ll make enough noise this weekend when Brock and Shane finally step inside the Octagon.”White says annoying; I say calm-inducing. Vuvuzela-lovers of the world, don't let this stop you. Overeem's next opponent? Not Fedor or Werdum

After Fedor Emelianenko's shocking loss to Fabricio Werdum, Strikeforce said that Werdum would fight Alistair Overeem, the Strikeforce heavyweight champ. That may be Werdum's next bout, but according to our friends at MMA Junkie, Overeem will face Ricco Rodriguez at Dream 15 on July 10 in Japan.Ricco Rodriguez? Yes, the same Ricco Rodriguez who won the UFC heavyweight belt from Randy Couture at UFC 39 and then lost three times in a row in the UFC. The same Ricco Rodriguez with more than 55 bouts in his career though he is just short of being 33 years old. The same Ricco Rodriguez who has faced drug and alcohol problems, but who is reportedly clean and sober these days. The same Ricco Rodriguez whose latest wins are over Ken Sparks and Travis Fulton.If the bout doesn't make sense to you, you're not alone. Overeem was not pleased with the fact that Werdum took away Overeem's shot at being the Fedor-slayer. However, I doubt that taking this fight is an Overeem temper tantrum. My guess is that Dream wanted a marquee heavyweight on their card, and they offered Overeem an enticing pay day.

It was a rough night for Celtics fans. Boston blew a 13-point third-quarter lead and handed the NBA title to the Los Angeles Lakers. The NBA's craziest dude and potential MMA fighter, Ron Artest starred all night. He was even captured in this screenshot right in front of Dana White! That's right, the UFC president and Boston native, sat courtside. You can see the face value on the ticket was ,500. That's probably stinging a bit this morning. Even worse, White ponied up ,000 to team up with Mark Wahlberg in a Celtics vs. Lakers bet against Snoop Dogg and Mike Epps. White posted a video at the start of his journey to L.A. Where was the Celtics' "muscle-T" like this brave baldy was wearing? Any shot that dude wasn't beaten to a pulp shortly after the photo was taken?

Who shined the most at Strikeforce: Los Angeles and Bellator? No. 1 star — Tim Kennedy: On Wednesday night, Kennedy showed what becoming a full-time fighter can do for your career. For his previous fights, Kennedy was splitting time between training and serving as a U.S. Army Ranger. For his bout with the very tough Trevor Prangley, Kennedy trained full time, and subsequently overwhelmed Prangley with a first-round rear naked choke.No. 2 star — Ben Askren: In winning the Bellator season two welterweight tournament, Askren beat Ryan Thomas twice and Dan Hornbuckle. Not only that, but he adapted his special brand of wrestling, nicknamed "the funk," to MMA. Askren, a two-time national champion at the University of Missouri, will face Lyman Good for the Bellator welterweight strap for his next test. No. 3 star — Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos: At the Strikeforce show, Santos had the tough task of taking out Marius Zaromskis, a fighter who is known to kick his opponents to sleep. Santos answered the call by knocking out Zaromskis halfway through the first round. His wife, the Strikeforce women's champ, fights next Saturday. Couture and Lesnar joining forces to ready for UFC 116

Brock Lesnar has been dominant during his short time in mixed martial arts. He's overpowered just about everyone he's faced except for a 220-pounder named Randy Couture. Couture has been around the block and knows all the little tricks. With that in mind, Lesnar invited Couture to come train with him at his gym in Minnesota.What's more impressive (3:10 mark)? The explosion and athleticism exhibited by 6-foot-5, 290-pound Lesnar or that the 46-year-old Couture is doing the same workout? Lesnar has a nice group of heavyweights on hand including "Ultimate Fighter 10" alum Jon Madsen. Typical N.J. weekend: Amusement park, fights and Kimbo Slice

Where is it fine to mix kiddie rides, roller coasters and some ass whuppin'? In New Jersey, of course, at Six Flags Great Adventure. MMA and wrestler promoters from the Garden State have scheduled an event just a few minutes away from N.J.'s most famous arena for fighting, Karma of "Jersey Shore" fame. The amusement park will actually host an all-day wrestling and fighting festival Saturday in Jackson, N.J. UFC alums Dante Rivera and Dan Cramer square off in the main event of a six-fight card. There's also appearances by UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar and former welterweight champ Matt Serra. And none other than the legendary (as dubbed by UFC voice Mike Goldberg before UFC 113) Kimbo Slice, this according to TheGarv.MMA Mayhem at Six Flags will be a full day of MMA related events starting with a No-Gi grappling tournament in the morning (which will run until 5pm) and topped off that night by an outstanding lineup of amateur and professional MMA fights inside a Hexagon cage! There will also be an MMA Vendor Village where you can pick up some fantastic MMA gear.After all that goodness for the kids, Pitbull will restore the amusement park's pristine reputation on Tuesday by performing awesome songs like Ay Chico, Sticky Icky and Hey You Girl.

Turns out it wasn't a fluke or bad break during Season 11 of "The Utimate Fighter" when Jamie Yager bowed out in the quarterfinals. Yager tried to defend his reputation against fans, media and coach Tito Ortiz, who said he quit when it counted most on the show against Josh Bryant. He was slightly more game against Rich Attonito in his first official UFC fight, but when it came time to push through some stamina issues it looked like Yager wilted again. Attonito was able to score a TKO win at the 4:25 mark of the second round in the first televised bout of "The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale" at the Palms in Las Vegas  The 26-year-old Californian came out strong, and his length was giving the 5-foot-10 Attonito all sorts of troubles over the first four minutes of the fight. But his hands started dropping and he was breathing heavily towards the end of the first. In the second, he lacked explosiveness and started getting nailed by Attonito's counterpunches. The beginning of the end started when Attonito charged Yager with a four-punch combo. Yager backed up to the cage and dropped for a single-leg takedown. Attinito, a former college wrestler at Hofstra, easily stymied the takedown and before you knew it he had Yager's back. He worked on a choke for 20 seconds and then flattened out Yager. Attonito unloaded with huge punches as Yager laid face first and stopped fighting, forcing the ref to finish the fight.  Yager's spot on the televised portion of Saturday night's card was debatable. Although many of the cast members say he was a nice guy, Yager came off as a loudmouth jerk during much of the season of TUF 11. On several occasions, he tried to goad fellow cast members into fights. In the show's fight against Bryant, he didn't exhibit much bite after all that bark. And now he looks like a longshot to get another UFC fight anytime soon after this loss to Attonito.  TUF 11 Finale undercard (courtesy of MMAJunkie): Brad Tavares def. Siver rolls to surprising unanimous decision win over Fisher

We'll find out in a just a bit if Spencer Fisher gets a fight of the night bonus. Maybe that'll be some solice for losing a very tight fight that apparently the judges all saw the same way. In fact, one judge gave Dennis Siver a clean sweep. It was a tough, tight fight to score as Siver rolled to a unanimous decision win, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 at the "The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale" in Las Vegas. Update: Fisher and Siver missed out on the postfight cash bonanza. Fight of the night honors went to the combatants in the co-main event, Keith Jardine and Matt Hamill. Each got ,000.  There were no knockdowns to give either fighter an edge and the only cut came as a result of a Fisher headbutt when the two fighters clashed. These sorts of cuts often happen when a southpaw (Fisher) faces a conventional (Siver) fighter. Siver should give his corner lots of credit. It was a huge, deep cut that bled badly for the final three minutes of the first round, but because of the fine work of his corner, the gash barely bled the rest of the fight.  Cagewriter had it 29-28 for Siver based on the effectiveness of kicks. He once again showed off great versatility showcasing some nasty front kicks. Siver also flashed a big chin. He took huge head kicks at the start of the second and third rounds but walked right through them.This makes it two straight losses for Fisher (23-6, 8-5 UFC), who fell his last time out against Joe Stevenson. Siver (16-7, 5-4 UFC), a bit of unknown for most American fans, picked up his fifth UFC win. It's also a feather in the cap of TUF 9 champ, Ross Pearson, who was able to really beat the snot out of Siver back in March.

Sledgehammer left hand and patience lead Leben to win

The man will not go away. And for those asking why Chris Leben continues to get UFC fights, Saturday night was a perfect example. The former cast member on Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter" will probably never find his way to a title shot at 185 pounds, but he's the kind of card filler that makes people consistently tune into UFC fights. Leben was thrown a tactical challenge against an outstanding wrestler in Aaron Simpson. But the veteran fighter's class showed as he fought through some nasty takedowns and a quick early pace set by Simpson to score a TKO win at 4:17 of the second round.Leben (20-6, 10-5 UFC) said it perfectly during the prefight, pointing out that the former Arizona State grappling star, Simpson, only had three UFC fights while he had 14. Once Simpson realized he couldn't take Leben to the mat, he gassed himself a bit. It was the first loss of Simpson's career and he learned that wrestling takes a lot of work against a seasoned fighter like Leben. Leben rose quickly to his feet after both of those first-round takedowns and then held his own in multiple clinches the remainder of the first and beginning of the second round. By the middle of the second, Simpson was tired, dropping his hands and stopped pushing forward. That's when Leben starting letting his hands go. He landed a straight left through Simpson's gloves. That backed up the 36-year-old. Leben moved forward and landed a left hook that dropped Simpson to his knees. On the ground, Leben landed six more big shots. Simpson (7-1, 3-1 UFC) got to his feet but was vaulted across the cage by a Leben right. Referee Josh Rosenthal had seen enough and spared Simpson anymore abuse.  Leben's career defines the term roller-coaster ride. He was a tormented character during the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" but then rebounded with five wins to start his official UFC career. In the middle of 2006, he was then destroyed by eventual UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Leben has gone 5-5 since, served a suspension for steroid use and had to deal with personal and alcohol issues over the last three years. This makes it two straight wins for Leben, who has turned his career around, using his underrated grappling game against both Simpson and Jay Silva.
