Even the upcoming Guild Wars 2, they’ll argue, doesn’t have anything like the multi-hundred or multi-thousand-player battles that EVE sees from time to time.

But what’s it actually like being in the middle of a war like that? What do you do? How does it play?

And most importantly, is it fun?

Today, Flosch at Random Waypoint writes a great post detailing his experiences in an EVE Online war that was so big it caused over $2000 of real-world-cost ship loss -

“War, at least in the Uni, is weird. It’s a bit like EVE turned up to eleven: you sit around even more before anything happens, but then it all happens on much larger scales. For example, in the Uni, you are not allowed to undock during wartime if you’re on your own, you’re not allowed to fly certain expensive ships, you’re not allowed to engage in activities such as mining (although, with Hulkageddon going on, that’s hardly a limitation). So you sit in station waiting for things to happen. And wait. And wait.

And then, a fleet is formed, and you wait even more. And when you’re at the point where you think you won’t be able to take it any more soon, suddenly, you get moving. Finding a fleet, running away from a fleet, or sometimes, even engaging a fleet. Battles can be small or large, they can be even or lopsided. We’ve had it all in the last couple of days.”

This is fascinating stuff, whether you play EVE or not – indeed, I’m going to point a number of my non-EVE-playing friends at this one. The sheer scale of the conflict is mind-boggling – and the fact that there’s a real-world, four-figure cost associated is, as Flosch says, a bit of a pause for thought moment.

Flosch does an excellent job of taking us inside the war and detailing the experience, without ever dropping into impenetrable jargon. If you want to get an insider’s view of one of the most unique gaming experiences out there, this one’s a must-read.

Have you been to war in EVE?
