Ah, spring in Wurm Online where the fog rolls in thicker than oatmeal. Pictured above is my poor corbita, actually moored at that exact moment because the fog was so thick I couldn’t see the shore and I had absolutely no idea where I was going. I think at the time I was just trying to get back home with a boat load of items.

I love the fact that Wurm has seasons, and I enjoy that these seasons are on their own schedule, and won’t always match the RL seasons. I get enough snow in the winter (actually, this year I didn’t, but that’s neither here nor there) and it’s great to have a bit of ‘winter’ when it’s summer and I’m melting in the living room.

Very few games have dynamic weather systems such as the one Wurm makes use of, there are massive storms that roll through, you’ll see the sky darkening and clouds move in. It’s great.

Along with these awesome weather patterns are harvests specific to the time of year it is. Olives just passed, and I’m eager for it to be maple season once again. Olive oil is used to make compasses, and maple sap can be boiled to make maple syrup. From there you can use the syrup in a number of recipes. Lemons, apples, and cherries all have their own harvest times, as well as grapes and a number of other plants with healing properties. It’s just one more complex level added to the game, and one I simply can’t get enough of.

While most of my twitter feed was filled with angry players upset over the Diablo 3 errors that kept cropping up, I was having a different sort of experience. I like the fact that you need to be logged in to play, and I love the fact that my friends can jump into the game no matter where I am. I love the ease that this can be done with – although it did catch me a bit off guard to see Tipa suddenly appear in my instance I quickly figured out there’s a setting in options -> social that allows your bnet friends to jump into your instances from their main menu.

My witch doctor is level 9, exploring crypts, killing wives who have turned evil. I absolutely love this class, it suits all my particular ‘wishes’ such as ranged attacks (or closer if I switch them out), pets, casting. An amazing voice over that I can’t get enough of when I listen to the story line.

Tipa, Shadowgeist, and I wandered around for the better part of an hour, me with my ghoulish dogs and Tipa with her bow of awesomeness. Every time her machine gun like sounds went off and there was a bright flare of light I secretly giggled. It was fun.

That’s what games are all about, aren’t they? Fun?

I did eventually get kicked out with the 3007 error, but unlike those I see who are incredibly upset, I’ll just wait for it to get fixed. Patiently. I still had a great time playing with friends.

For once I’m actually not playing much Wurm Online today, or any other of my ‘usual’ games – I’ve been playing Diablo 3, even though it was not a game I actually intended on playing. I purchased it for my husband by signing up for a year of WoW and since it’s tied to my bnet account I figured I would download it and give it a try.

A few hours later, and me and my witchdoctor are having a blast exploring dungeons and blowing things up with (mostly) ranged attacks.

I know you can play with others, but aside from friends who are just as curious about the lore / story as I am I’d rather not. I am not interested in rushing through maps so much as I’m interested in exploring and listening to the voice overs (which are very well done). The graphics are impressive for the type of game it is, and it’s been running flawlessly for me since I installed it this morning. Looking forward to playing more!

While my heart is forever drawn to those complex sandbox games like EVE and Wurm Online, there are days when I don’t want to have to do anything that requires any thought process what so ever. Where I want simple fun and the quicker I can get it, the better. WoW fills this desire perfectly. I can queue for a raid or a dungeon and be happily killing mobs in no-time. I can quietly harvest, craft, or work on achievements. If I’m in the mood for pvp it’s even simpler, and it’s a lot of fun (personal opinion of course).

I think it’s important to play different games, especially if you work in the gaming industry. You don’t want to become so involved that you shut your mind down to other methods of gameplay. You also don’t want to play your game of choice so much that you become bored with it – having other options eases this slightly.

So even though I work mainly with Wurm Online, and yes, it is by far my ‘game of choice’ and has been for quite some time now (as is evident on this blog) I do continue to play other games, and will probably continue to do so as long as I game at all. Because I’m not looking to get heavily vested in another game I tend to swerve away from the more time invested ones that everyone else is talking about these days, but I’m sure I’ll pop in eventually.

Video games are supposed to be fun. As soon as they’re not, it’s time to stop playing them. As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself!

When it rains, it pours, and wow does it ever rain here these days. So for those who have not heard, Wurm Online was hit with a virus this week, and as a result we’re moving our forums / web page / wiki. The game is safe to play, so that’s a bonus at least. There is a temporary blog set up at Tumblr for more information, as well as updates on the wurm web page. You can also join us in IRC on the #wurm channel, irc.rizon.net port 6667.

The sad thing is the wiki is almost essential to play Wurm Online, and without it things are going to be difficult. Hopefully everything is back up and running before too long, and I’m also hoping that players bond together during the rough patches and help one another out.

It’s been a long week.

On a completely unrelated note, Sunday is Mothers Day here in Canada (and a few other places) so make sure to let yours know how important she is to you!

Some how, when you cross over to a new server, it just doesn’t ‘feel’ like home any more. That was the case when I crossed over into Chaos, at least (formally known as Wild). Chaos is a pvp server, but there are some restrictions on it, it’s not like the Epic servers. The first thing I noticed was that there are a LOT more creatures on Chaos. A lot fewer players. MASSIVE hills. Deliverance is relatively ‘flat’ when compared to some of the older servers. There’s a few ‘hills’ but I can climb every one of them without needing any wine to replenish my stamina. There are mountains on both Independence and Chaos that I doubt very much I’d be able to climb so easily.

I love exploring these ‘new’ places. There’s so much to see. I was ambushed by slow spiders which I have never seen before, they are PURPLE! Or at least a shade of blue. There were trolls EVERYWHERE, I mean I’ve never seen so many trolls before! Bears, goblins, unicorns, dogs, deer, I even managed to grab a wild horse that was floating on an island, and lead it behind my boat.

While the population is a tad low compared to other servers there are plenty of old deeds to explore and of course since it’s a pvp server you have to be careful. The whole reason I’m over there aside from visiting and exploring was to enchant a few mailboxes. So far my casts have hovered in the 70-73 range, but I know I can do better if Fo would just smile on me for a minute or two. Multiple casts later and I haven’t gotten a better cast, we’ll see how it goes today.

There have been a lot of other adventures in Wurm Online these days, too. Did you know reeds are in game? Have you tried cutting grass yet? I have a penned up wild boar over at Darkpaw that I’m eager to go visit, I can’t charm or tame the creature at all but since it’s one of Fo’s creatures that only spawn in his domain I thought it would be neat to try to keep one as a pet.

Ah, sermons. Now that they’re not religion specific, it’s very easy for players to gain faith. My goal was to reach 70 on both the vynora and fo priests I have and thanks to Moumix, Arkenor, Yetian, and Hord, I was able to reach that this weekend. While 70 is not that important for the vynora (no new spells, but I did get a new title) for the fo priest, it’s exciting times.

It means that I can now cast genesis on my animals, and remove bad traits. This is incredibly valuable to me since I’ve got a handful of midnight coloured horses that have misshapen legs and could do with a cure so that this trait is stopped once and for all with future breeding.

The spell has a 30 minute timer, so I’m not instantly curing animals all over the place, but given enough time I’ll have taken care of the 30 horses or so that I have. Of course not ALL of those have negative traits, only a small handful, but I’m still really excited. It also means that I can link up with Moumix and his fo priest in order to cast Life Transfer, one of the really nice weapon enchants that will take life from your enemies while you attack and heal you. I absolutely love this spell, whether or not I can cast it successfully however, is another story.

Compare the screen shot above with the one from yesterday and you can pretty much guess what I’ve been up to. I converted three of the 2×2 animal pens into houses for alts and storage, leaving pens between each house for animals (and double doors for carts to have easy access).

I really like the over all look of the dock area with these new changes, it makes things look a little more ‘lived in’ and since the deed only had two houses to begin with it gives me a bit more room. The center storage area I’m planning to use for ‘liquids’. I know, that sounds pretty odd, but I don’t actually have a place to store barrels where I won’t just trip over them. I’d like a location where I can store olive oil, maple syrup, milk, juice, and lye. For now the barrels line a wall in the main crafting building, but it doesn’t really fit the area.

Thanks to those changes in sermons, my Vynora priest managed to reach 70 faith yesterday. The Fo priest is almost at 69, which means before too long I’ll be able to attempt some genesis casts and remove bad traits from animals. I’m incredibly excited about this (which is why I keep talking about it). I do still want to take a trip to Chaos but it seems like there’s always ‘something’ to be done on my deeds. Isn’t that always the case?

While most people would rather huddle inside as snow blankets the lands of wurm, keeping warm by their forges (or, ovens) I embrace the chilly air, and I couldn’t be happier that it’s winter in Wurm Online. With seasons now running on a timer that does not match ‘most’ RL seasons, you can expect winter approx. 8 times a year. The lands look amazing, and I have a clear view of all the evil creatures that are going to be chasing me down.

I’ve been working on Thorin’s Bay (no surprise). Since there were so many pens (especially the ones pictured above) I’ve decided to remove a few, and place 2×2 guest houses along the front of the property instead, with a horse pen between each house. This will make 4 pens and 3 houses, perfect for visitors. It does mean bashing down a lot of low stone walls and gates which is a lengthy process, as well as creating a lot of bricks and mortar. The over all look of the area should be much improved once it’s all completed (and of course I’ll post screen shots). Each house needs 160 bricks / mortar, with three houses to craft that will take a bit of time. Thankfully, my alts are making the bulk supplies, while my ‘crafter’ is building the actual homes.

In between working on the houses some interesting changes came to Wurm, one of which I took advantage of right away. It involves sermons. In the past players would have to follow the same deity in order to conduct a sermon. While this idea was great for priests of popular deity like Vynora, there were some that were slightly left out in the cold, like Magranon. Sermons are used for increase faith gain (and prayer resets if you have enough players participating). Now players can participate from any deity, as long as they are premium. Between myself and Moumix we have 7 characters, and I’ve also invited Arkenor and Yetian to come by and hold a sermon or two if they’re interested. There’s no requirement of course, but the more listeners you have the better. So far the gains are about .120 every 3 hours & that includes a prayer reset. It means my Fo priest may be able to get her Genesis spell before too long, and my Vynora is almost 70 faith, which I’m pretty excited about.

Moumix has taken to selling boats, and it seems like a lot of fun. I don’t have the desire to create these at all, but I am more than willing to help out where I can. He has sold two so far, and I’ve been creating the locks and anchor for each ship. He creates those anchors into mooring ropes so the new customer doesn’t have to worry about their ship being stolen while it’s parked. I’ve been spending most of my time at Thorin’s Bay and it’s really easy to tell why.

The deed is gigantic. It’s 41×41 with 10 tiles of perimeter. That puts upkeep almost at 4s a month (a little less). It’s nestled against the side of a mountain, with tall walls and palisade gates on three sides, blocking out unwanted visitors and intruders. The fourth side faces the water, and is all on-deed. After the water and some docks is a row of iron fence with a few gates, which prevents anyone from accessing the deed at all. It’s the only one of my deeds like this, and I have to admit, it’s nice. With 10 tiles of perimeter, I have room to expand (if I ever wanted to) and I have no worries of anyone settling right on my back step.

The deed itself is beautiful. The ‘for sale’ images really didn’t do it justice at all. I plan on making a video of it once I get myself fully situated, just to show it off. There’s an enormous tree farm on deed, that is to say there’s basically a large portion of the deed dedicated to trees and my Vynora priest couldn’t be happier. There are also over 30 pens for animals, including two larger ones for cattle. All of these pens are filled with enchanted grass, which makes my job a LOT easier. I’ve begun breeding the few horses that were left behind (as well as the cattle) since they were quite old and may have died off before I got any young.

Surprisingly enough there are only two houses on-deed, but they are gigantic and more than enough. One is an 8×5 stone structure with floor boards throughout that I’m converting into a living space for myself and Moumix, the second is a work shop type area, complete with two 61 QL forges, a 60 QL oven, and a 61 QL Vynora altar. There are BSB everywhere, most of them came with the deed. Packed full of random bits and pieces, I will be well supplied for a long time hence.

While Moumix is handling the ship-building portion of things, I’ve been taking care of tools and weapons on Stargrace. My Vynora priest has been doing meals and farming (41 HFC so far) and were it not for the fact that I have such fantastic neighbours over at Darkpaw Bay I’d probably be tempted to give the property up because I can do absolutely everything over at Thorin’s with room to spare. By far one of my best purchases, with easy access to both Exodus and Chaos, I’m looking forward to staying there for a long, long time. Until something else catches my eye, of course.
