National Prescription Drug Take Back Day allows participants to turn in unused or expired prescription medications. This year’s event takes place across the country on April 28, 2018 and participants can use the online search tool hosted by the a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to find a collection site location near them.

This program is offered in partnership between the DEA and local law enforcement agencies across the country – which is designed to educate the public on medication safety, storage and disposal. Although National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is not sponsored by OptumRx or UnitedHealthcare, we feel it is important information to share with you.

Small and medium-sized industrial facilities can apply for free energy, productivity, and waste assessments through the Midwest Industrial Assessment Center (Midwest IAC) at the University of Missouri – Columbia. The Midwest IAC is sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to provide these assessments at no cost to small and medium sized manufacturers. The team includes faculty and student engineers conducting audits. After the site visit, a comprehensive report will be developed to provide cost savings opportunities identified during the assessment.

Examples of recommendations are efficient use of compressed air via heat recovery, reducing pressure losses or reducing the air pressure, efficient use of process heating systems via monitoring the combustion efficiency or preheating combustion air with waste heat from furnaces, utilizing combined heat and power, efficient use of power transmission systems such as pumps and motors via use of adjustable frequency drives or monitoring the voltage unbalance in a three phase motor, minimizing water contamination before treatment, and adding equipment to reduce production bottleneck. These are only a few examples. The assessment team reviews the whole array of manufacturing systems in the facility and makes energy saving recommendations.

Since 2007, Midwest IAC has conducted over 200 assessments with more than 1,400 recommendations. The program has identified more than $25 million in recommended cost savings.
