Saguaro National Park and the Sonoran Desert

Nestled within southern Arizona in Prima County lies the beautiful and majestic Saguaro National Park and the Sonoran Desert. Consisting of two parts, the Tucson Mountain District and Rincon Mountain District, the park was unified in 1994 and lies 10 miles to the west and 10 miles to the east of Tucson respectively.

The nearly 92,000 acre national park offers stunning Sonoran Desert landscapes, flora, fauna, wildlife, but most notably the saguaro cactus. The national park was named after these giant cacti that call the area home. The breathtaking saguaro cacti are found nowhere else in the world and are the focus of many of Matt's shirt designs here at MNKR. The Lone Saguaro, Saguaro National Park, Explore the Desert, and Get Lost lines were all inspired by his days spent in the park amongst the cacti. Not only has the national park inspired his designs, but also his tattoos, lifestyle, and appreciation of nature as a whole.

It is said that the Native Americans that populated the area believed the cacti to be souls of their ancestors. When Matt witnessed the sunset over the national park, it became more than just a day in the desert; it truly became an experience that left a mark.

Artist Spotlight - Jason "Revok" Williams

Jason Williams, better known as Revok, is a Californian graffiti artist turned abstract painter. His roots as a graffiti artist landed him more than a few run-ins with the law; it also landed him a solo show in Cologne, Germany in 2015, as well as three more group shows from 2015-2017.

METADATA 5 (CORRUPT FILE), 2015

Revok's abstract work is a culmination of parallel lines and geometric shapes. His artwork usually consists of bright, contrasting colors, disjointed lines that abruptly end or lead somewhere else. Revok's spectacularly titled METADATA 5 (CORRUPT FILE) is exactly that; a computer glitch, a screen gone haywire. Disjointed as it may appear, every aspect looks purposefully misaligned, abrasive, and disorganized.

Instrument Exercise #9, 2017

Instrument Exercise #9 is one in a series of painting which uses the jagged spray painted lines. As the paint gets closer to the foreground, it becomes muddled into brown covering the electric blue and gradient orange-red, and finally becomes black. The lines are weathered and imperfect, some previous layers show through, and everything was strategically placed.

Matt Fellows, the owner and designer of MNKR Brand, has been stick n' pokin' since February 5th, 2017. He has since opened his doors to offer stick n' pokes under the name Black Scraps™.

This June marks the first appearance of Surf Market LA presented by Salt Surf in Culver City. This two day outdoor market will include food, home goods, a live surfboard shaping demonstration, panel discussions, as well as all of the best surfing accessories you need, of course.

The two day outdoor market, sponsored by Platform LA, begins on Saturday June 23rd from 11am-5pm and also includes the live surfboard shaping by Shaper Studios. The event continues on Sunday the 24th which will also include the outdoor market from 11am-5pm as well as the panel discussions which begin at 1pm. These discussions will focus on the female surf revolution and the power of activism with guest speakers Kassia Meador, Helena Dunn, and Bonnie Wright. When they're not taking the kids at Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club to the beach to catch some waves, the good people over at Matix Clothing invite the kids over to the HQ to skate their ramp as part of their ongoing project, The Compton Surf Club. Cawaja Weehouse / Alchemy Architects

I've always been a fan of modern architecture, modular design, and now that's it's had time to evolve into something really cool, prefab homes. Alchemy Architects in Saint Paul, MN has been combining all those things into their 'Weehouse' since 2003, and doing a pretty good job at it. Although they offer traditional architectural services as well, Alchemy Architects states that they can build you anything from a 200 sq. ft. unit up to a 75 unit prefab condominium. That I would love to see. Check out their Cawaja Weehouse in Ontario, Canada below.

Maybe it's the ego in me talking, but this is one of my favorite designs that I've come up with lately. It's all my tattoos layed out side by side. One morning I woke up, made coffee, and while I sat there sipping it in my undies I decided to draw them all out on paper. To me there's a lot of sentiment and nostalgia in this print that makes it special, but I think even if you're not me (which I think most of you are) it's still interesting. I only made a very limited edition of these dudes. Please enjoy.

Hundreds of Trump protesters shut down 101 Freeway shouting "Not my president".

Dozens of arrests were made, police cars were damaged, and minor injuries were reported as protesters took to the streets last night in Downtown Los Angeles to protest Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton Nov. 8th. What started out as peaceful protests in front of city hall soon spread towards the freeway system only a block North. Hundreds of protesters then swarmed the 101 Freeway and a skirmish with the police ensued for the next few hours into the morning of Nov. 10th.

I went to bed last night before the election results were finalized in the hopes that things wouldn't actually end up where it looked like they were going to go. Sadly, this was not the case when I woke up in the morning. I never in a million years would have believed that we'd end up with someone as ignorant as Trump holding the highest office in our land. I didn't think Middle America had it in them to ignore reason, truth, policy and instead vote with their emotions. Well, you proved me wrong and I stand corrected. Good for you guys for getting to the polls.

Usual Supply™ Vintage and Non-Vintage

So I've started a new project. Since I love thrift store shopping, but don't really have a need for all the hundreds of rad t-shirts I come across in my travels, I figured I'd start buying, cataloging, and reselling vintage and non-vintage graphic t-shirts for a coffee table style picture book. I haven't yet figured out how many t-shirts will go into it, but I'm thinking about a nice big number like 500, 666, 720, or 1,000. Follow my progress on Instagram @UsualSupply.

T-shirts to me have a magic mix of elements that have had me hooked for 30+ years. They're a mixture of fashion, design, and advertising. And I don't mean advertising like Coca Cola® (although yes that too), but as in advertising yourself to the world around you. Are you in love, do you want to talk politics, is your sense of humor just downright hilarious? There's a shirt for that.

I designed my first t-shirt when I was just 10 years old. My 6th grade class had a contest to design a shirt for our room and I won. It was a wicked peace sign design with icicles coming off of it that read "Room 2 is Cool, We Rule" (blog post to follow).

My goal with the (not yet named) book is to give the reader a place to get away for a while and get lost in a sea of graphics. Maybe for inspirational purposes, or maybe for meditative ones. I believe that my book will different for a few reasons. The focus will be on the graphics and the designs, but in a very generic way. The shirts will be shot on a white background instead of on models. The t-shirts will cover a time span from the 2000-aughts, back to the 70's, but so far it's mainly comprised of lots of 90's tees. This book will not be about the history of the t-shirt, nor about band tees or any one thing specifically. There are a lot of rad books like this out there already. It will be a total mix of design styles and eras. The repetitive nature of my book and it's imagery will itself be a selling point for people who aren't necessarily t-shirt-heads or design lovers.

More shirts I've collected and catalogued in the past few months.

As this is a new project, I haven't yet picked a goal date. When I get farther along in the picture editing process I'll know better how long it will take and when I think I'll be finishing up. More to come.

Adidas' New Skate Film - Away Days

Can't wait for this new feature-length skate film from Adidas to come out. Filmed in over 90 cities, and spanning a 3 year period, this thing looks monstrous! Away Days starts it's premier circuit here in Los Angeles May 12th, then heads to NY, London, Tokyo, with it's final stop in Sao Paulo May 20th. It'll be releasing to the public shortly thereafter.

Only four seasons later, Vetements (French for "clothing") is on top of their game, playing by their own rules ... which appear to be few and far between. Georgian-born designer Demna Gvasalia quit his comfortable, yet frustrating position at Louis Vuitton to start his own brand (with two partners), and has since taken the Paris-based collective down a short road full of freakishly oversized pieces, borrowed graphics, and no-nonsense nonsense. Vetements, sold as womenswear, but donned and walked by female and male alike, is happy to be turning the fashion world a bit on it's head with it's ready-to-wear wares.

Gvasalia, who took over Alexander Wang's seat at Balenciaga last Fall seems to be having the time of his life splitting his energy between the two very different houses. Whether you hate it or love it, Vetements' influential style is fast spreading across the fashion world. Heck, I'm even getting in to it. Current outfit; ripped up blue jeans where one of the legs has been ripped clean off, and a size 4X Gildan tee that says "Home Wrecker" and has a pic of a demolition crane on it. All this for only $11 instead of $4,200. It's fresh, it's new, it's "why not".

Mike Dempsey Captures The In-Between Scene

Photographic scenes ripped from your dreams; Mike Dempsey creates stunning imagery that's sure to leave you with an "Oh fuck" feeling. Most photography leaves you with a sense of beauty or grandeur, nostalgia or banality...the normal feelings when it comes to photography. They're the photos we know and love, and frankly the reason photography was invented in the first place. Photos are supposed to document our reality, to capture our daily life as it unfolds. Mike's photography however takes it to a whole new level. He's managed to create and capture the in-between moments that are very rarely seen with such clarity and vibrance. With Mike's images you're immediately transported to the second the photo was taken, and you're instantly struck with a feeling of urgency for what's currently taking place, or what's about to happen. The realness is surreal, the immediacy unbearable. All in all, they read more like stills from movie reels than anything else. You can't help but fill in the blanks and complete the script in your head. All this from a self-proclaimed director first, photographer second. It all makes sense, it's all dope af, it's Mike Dempsey (aka Mike's Butt).

When I was a little boy my dad gave me an easy way to remember how to spell "desert" vs "dessert". He said that "Dessert has two esses because you always want more of it." I love you pops, but I have to disagree, I'm always left wanting more desert.

VICE Takes A Stab at Cable TV With Viceland

VICE Media launched Viceland cable television channel this Monday to mixed reviews. It seems quite a few people were angry enough to get up from their TVs and walk to their computers to write hate-filled reviews about their wholesome programming on H2 turning contemporary? And maybe I'm the wrong person to be weighing in on this subject since I've only ever had one or two stations, but shit, can't you just turn the channel? Seems to me that the real argument should be about television viewership continually dropping, especially in millennials, and whether or not this was a good move on VICE's part.

I've seen many a VICE documentary over the years and would consider myself a big fan. Great production value, interesting subject matter, and just the right amount of irreverence, smarts, and compassion where needed. And all this coming from a Docuhead (definition: someone who has seen all the documentaries). With that being said, I really hope they can pull off this new venture. With show titles like Gaycation, Balls Deep and Weediquette it's gonna be hard not to be successful.

Largest Free-Standing Hall On Earth Turned Tropical Paradise

I don't know if there's a name for it, but I love outdoor environments constructed or grown indoors. E.g., a house with trees growing straight out of the ground, a tiki bar full of tiki huts, a train museum with a train coming out of a tunnel, a warehouse with an old Airstream inside of it. When I was 10 years old I wanted to construct an asphalt roadway inside my bedroom with a chain link fence running down the side of it after I saw something similar in a museum in New Mexico. Not sure if this is strange or common or what, but expect a whole post on the subject sometime in the near future.

In the meantime check out the incredible Tropical Islands Resort constructed inside the world's largest airship hangar in Germany.

It's that time again, the best book fair on the planet is back at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. Browse and shop from tons of rad/weird artists selling millions of zines, books, t-shirts, screen prints, stickers and more.
