Guide to opening the Xbox 360

I'm slowly branching Mnpctech into game console modding. When I say slowly, I bought a 360 system when they first came out in 2005 with the intention of modding it. I have yet to buy a PS3. I didn't bother opening my 360 until Lian Li sent a sample of their new XB01 replacement case. This aluminum shell was created to solve the cooling issues with 360.

Before performing the transplant of the 360 guts to the XB01, I searched for tutorials on opening the 360 case. Microsoft made an effort to make opening it a b****. Inparticular, the tiny release tabs on the back. Everybody was poking a micro screw driver into it while prying it apart open with your other hand. I marred the plastic on my 360 pretty badly with the method. I've watched my painter Brad do the same thing too. Those of you who have opened one, you know what I mean. I know why the people on Youtube who make these tutorials don't show you the shell up close.

Anyhow, somebody either got this little tool design from the 360 factory or devised it on their own.
I spent this week experimenting with the "unlock tool" to discover the most efficiant steps in dismantling the 360. If we're gonna mod these, I need to dismantle them the quickest way possible without damaging them.

Turn the Xbox 360 upside down to remove the faceplate

Pry the faceplate off with both of your thumbs

For the next steps I'll be using the Xbox 360 Unlock Tool Kit

The bottom vent is held on with 6 plastic release tabs, 3 on each side.

Gently pull the vent back as you push in the plastic tabs with the point of the unlock tool

Rotate the Xbox 360 so the unit sits upright (hard drive up)

You must remove this rubber foot to access this plastic release tab

Insert the 360 unlock tool into the square opening (chose either left & right side) in the top vent to access the plastic release tab and pull the vent upward.

Release the middle tab by pushing it with the Unlock Tool. You may have to push the tabs on both sides.

The back of the 360 is where the unlock tool really helps open it's shell.

It works with both A/V & HDMI versions of the Xbox 360

Like a key, match the unlock tool's 5 pins to the 5 release tabs in the back, then push in the tabs

Keep the shell spread open with one hand, while you release the 2 release tabs on the other side.

Like a key, match the unlock tool's 2 pins to the 2 release tabs. You should now have the rear of the shell open.

Once the rear is open, looking at the front, starting at the Eject button, there is 4 release tabs

You can use the corner of the unlock tool to pry open the release tabs

6x size 10 torx screws hold on the top of the 360 shell. Use the T10 side of the Torx wrench to remove these screws

You can either remove the Eject button, or lift to clear the top shell when removing it.

The KHAOS case arrives at Mnpctech.com

NZXT KHAOS Dissection Video

I like the case stripped down to it's chassis. It's the extruded aluminum surface I dig. I ordered this medical model skull as my starting point. I also contact NZXT about getting another HD cage (shown here). I've got an idea for making machined intakes for each of the front of each removable HD cage.

I ordered this medical model skull as my starting point

The skull is mounted in the top 5.25 bay.

Heres the entire bay assembly removed from the chassis.

Whats your remedy for a headache?!

Slaymate's Saga PC

I'm performing some mods to this Lian Li A70 case for my friend Dan aka Slaymate.. I asked him to join this thread and post his hardware. My prime directive is improving airflow in the Lian Li A70. Add some utilitarian amenities Dan requested like handles, castors. Then powdercoat the panels Gloss Black and airbrush a mural over the right side and bezel.

The first thing to be replaced was the A70's factory perforated front grill with Honeycomb Modders Mesh, with 1/4" hexagon holes with 9/32" staggered centers.

The A70's restrictive front grill, BEFORE

Honeycomb Modders Mesh

Determining best location for the quad 120 fan / window, I will be offering these windows soon. They're cnc milled from 1/4" thick acrylic, measure 11" x 13.5" with beveled edges and countersunk for 8/32 socket head screws.

I've got a card bracket I need to clear, so placement is crucial

Outlining location before cutting access panel

After the panel has been cut for acrylic window

Dan will be using Mnpctech pro line's "Grooved Case Handles" are CNC milled from blocks of 3/4" thick solid aluminum.

These handles were special ordered with my last production run of anodized Black case feet.
I received the new XB01 case from Lian Li to check out.

Bit-tech's excellent review and installation guide for the XB01 here

I actually had to mod the XB01 right out of the box, my video component cable wouldn't fit. I have a first generation Xbox 360 without the HDMI connector. I didn't find any warnings on the box about this. This sucks for any 1st gen owners who don't mod. Lian Li obviously felt the majority of XB01 buyers would be enthusiasts who enjoy building and dismantling hardware, but it still could have been designed to accommodate both cable options.

The XB01's drive eject button is just a hair short of reaching the motherboard's eject button. A couple pieces of tape stuck to the tip of the button will fix the problem.

HARDCORE COMPUTER REACTOR project

We're performing custom paint on the HardcoreComputer Reactor PC for an upcoming event. The Reactor was recently the darling of the tech blogs because it's the first manufactured PC that immerses it's hardware components in non-conductive liquid coolant.
Heres the bit-tech article link.

Under a time crunch, but if time will allow, I'd to perform at least one mod to it!

More Reactor PCs in the product developement & testing lab

Lian Li Armorsuit PC-P80 custom paint

We just finished this Black enamel paint job on the Lian Li Armorsuit PC-P80. I covered the workbench table with plush towels and placed myself in a zen state during it's assembly, so I didn't scratch anything. The PC-P80 is still impressive in it's factory Black anodized aluminum finish, but even more stunning in enamel paint. It also attracts dust like a magnet. The 5.25 bays were the most time consuming pieces to prep and paint, because of the tiny ventilation holes.

Most time consuming pieces to prep/paint, 5.25 bay covers

Inside the Armorsuit PC-P80

Bill Owen's suggestions for cases (low, mid, high range)

I've been getting a lot of inquiries asking "Which case should I buy?" lately.

I've modifying cases as a side business for 9 years, theres a lot of great options out there now. I have a large online following of enthusiasts, so I always try to share my personal recommendations. Heres my 3 suggestions from low, mid to high range cases based upon my personal criteria, I like a case with lots of room for my hands. I like a case to be constructed with good materials, all of the folds should be tight, not flex under weight or feel flimsy. I like switches and leds be screwed in, not glued! I won't bother with any case that offers anything smaller than 120mm cooling fans, front and rear. I like a removable HD cage (but not always possible in low range cases)

The manufacturers have focused more on silence over recent years. Larger factory included fans (120 & 140mm) that provide good cooling without the excessive fan noise. fyi: The Silvestone TJ09 has excellent side intake vents I've never seen before. It's also the best aluminum constructed case I've seen to date, but you will pay for it!

Antec 300 Midtower, retail: $39.99 - $49.99
Durable steel construction, Optional 2x 120mm intake fans, factory 140mm top exhaust fan with speed control, 120mm exhaust, removable filter in bezel. PSU located on floor. The only minuses are no removable MB or HD trays, but it's hard to find everything at this price range.

My video review of Antec Three Hundred
YouTube - Antec Three Hundred 300 Case Review

Lian Li PC-7 plus II midtower, retail $89 - $99 online
Lian Li has lead the industry with their superior factory tooling, they make durable aluminum cases. This case has been made for almost 4 years! I've used it for several mod projects. It's very light, but durable. It has a smart, stylish and simple layout, nice grained alum panels. The PC-7 is a good blank canvas for modding. It includes 2x quiet factory 120 front and rear fans, removable filter and HD cage. The switches and leds are easily removable. The only minus is MB tray is not removable.

My video review of Lian Li (dissection for modding!)
YouTube - Case Mod: Bill's Case Dissection: Lian Li PC-7 plus

Silverstone Tj09, retail $249 - $299
You get what you pay for with this case. An exceptional design with good engineering. Very good cooling and quiet. Superior aluminum construction and component parts throughout. I've stated this before, it's the best chassis design with a removable MB tray I've seen yet.

Silverstone TJ09 Video review by 3DGAMEMAN
YouTube - #764 - SilverStone TJ09 Case Video Review

If you have any questions about these suggestions, just email me

pcbuilderATmnpctech.com

Bill Owen

BUT that damage must be substantial (not just limited to a few scratches or scuffs)

The first case sent from our customer had several plastic mounting tabs broken for the top and side panels. We had no way of replicating new plastic tabs, so we notified our customer about this and they had another case dropped to Mnpctech. The second was in much better condition with only these minor issues.

1. Side panel latch cover sticks a bit, you have to press real firm to release it.
2. The leds are removed from the Alien head badges. (standard procedure by Alienware)
3. The back cover of the bay door had one broken plastic peg, but nothing detrimental.
4. The case feet are real scratched, but this is expected with plastic feet.

One annoyance that Alienware could avoid for their customers is using low tack painter's tape instead of "Scotch" tape to secure the panels during shipment. The Scotch tape leaves a sticky residue that may upset customer that didn't plan on painting the case.

Alienware ALX arrives from Alienware's Outlet store

The chassis was manufactured by Chieftec.

Removing the Alienware's top plastic watercool radiator that enclosed Koolance EXOS radiator.

Location of 2x 80mm cooling intake fans (not included) in Alienware's renewed cases.

Behind the front bezel

Antec 300 Midtower Case Project

This will be another Insane Case Mod by Mnpctech.com

Clear and color acrylic computer windows

Acoustical sound dampening sheets for computer cases

What makes this project even more viral is giving this case away for FREE! All you have to do is post 1 comment when the giveaway is announced on the CaseModBlog.Com I'll keep you updated as to when it's posted.

If theres one case getting a lot of attention today, it's the new Antec Three Hundred. For under $60, it packs a lot of features with decent cooling and the superior build quality we've come to expect from Antec. In only 1 month, my YouTube review of the Antec 300 received over 12,000 views

Antec Three Hundred (300) Case Review

Antec 300 Three Hundred awaits it's first incision

To draw out your design, I'll first apply either #2060 Green or #2090 Blue "low tack" painter's tape by Scotch/3M.
You can buy these Home Depot or Ace Hardware stores. You also apply tape so you don't scratch up the panel with the jigsaw's steel guard. I always use a measuring square for windows

Window corner, but how do you make a curved corner instead?, for inserting U-channel molding later

For making corners, use a roll of tape! The smaller the roll, the smaller your arc

Whenever I make a side panel window, I always use a jigsaw with a 18 TPI (teeth per inch) bi-metal cutting blade. I'll make the intial incision for the jigsaw blade with a rotary tool and 1.5" reinforced dremel cutting wheel

I use a Black & Decker jigsaw with a 18 TPI (teeth per inch) bi-metal cutting blade.

Window is cut and ready for refinements, ie: clean up the edges and corners

I'll use a rounded side file for detailing it's straight edges and corners

Before I install the window, I debate about using something other than clear plexi, Maybe translucent Blue or Yellow to fit the Mod Brothers logo?

Super strength adhesion. Used for mounting windows in computer cases.

http://www.mnpctech.com/scotch_4010_tape_o...semod_gods.html

Case Mod: Bruce Lee Tribute PC

This is a case mod project is for an individual inspired by these two masters of the martial arts. These masters are Ed Parker and Bruce Lee.

The case is Lian Li's PC-7 plus. It is in my opinion the best aluminum midtower case for modding. It's simple design makes a perfect blank canvas. It's also manufactured using superior stamping methods and materials. This means you can alter it by adding additional fan holes and windows without entirely compromising it's durability.

My review on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfdAbmXPrd8

Lian Li PC-7 plus

I first posted this on the casemodblog.com

Read more about recommended case modding tools I use from this update

I'm installing an 120mm intake in the floor of our Lian Li's chassis

We first apply 3M Green (low tack) Painters tape before marking off the fan hole location. We're using a 120mm steel fan guard as out template for the fan hole with a measuring square.

The fan guard allows you to mark the center of the fan hole.

Using center punch to pin point center before using 1-1/2" hole saw attachment to accommondate Knockout shaft.

After cutting 1-1/2" hole for Greenlee knockout shaft.

Greenlee Knockout Punch for 120mm fan holes

Tightening Knockout Punch with Socket Wrench

Removed portion of chassis (120mm hole)

A Clean cut, no need to file burrs created by a 4.5" hole saw

Using Roper Whitney Hand Punch to cut fan screw mounting holes

Another clean cut fan hole!

We're now ready to install the 120mm cooling fan

I've installed the 120mm cooling fan as an intake, (drawing cool air into chassis) I will attach a filter beneath the fan, otherwise your fan will draw in a lot of dust.

Prep and painting a new coat of Mazda Miata Yellow with some HoK Pearl Flake ...magic :D

I'll have a YouTube video of this stage posted later this week.

Lian Li PC-7plus (aluminum chassis)

CLARKE brand 80 grit media

Filling CLARKE ABRASIVE BLASTER with 80 Grit Garnet Blasting Media

Brad blasting surface of computer chassis outdoors.
Antec is now including holes and cable ties for cable management, easily removable filters, anti-vibration features, insulated panels in their cases, or at least a couple of models, check out the review of the P180 Mini mATX we did over this past weekend, we're impressed... just wished it would accept ATX as well

casemodblog.com

Mnpctech.com Case Mod Desktop Wallpapers

Hey gang, I took these pictures of some fan grill prototypes I'm working on and thought they would make cool desktop wallpapers for anyone interested.

1600 x 1200
1024 x 768

1600 x 1200
1024 x 768

1600 x 1200
1024 x 768

1600 x 1200
1024 x 768

1600 x 1200
1024 x 768

"The Simpsons" Ultra Microfly Cube PC

I'm modding the Ultra Microfly cube with a Simpsons theme. I'm being joined on this project by my friend, Brad Copeland. Brad was my N+ certification teacher in 2003. Brads a huge fan of "The Simpsons" and never modded a case and thought it would be fun. So now I'm Brad's Teacher.

My plan is to replace the front 80mm intake shown here with 2x 120mm fans

Characterized overkill cooling, perfect for "The Simpsons PC"

The Microfly comes with a factory 120mm exhaust fan. I'm going to punch out the perforated fan grill to improve airflow with a Greenlee knockout punch.

This method for making fan holes is quick and less messy than using a drill with a hole saw attachment. You get a fast and clean cut. Hand filing down jagged edges or burrs isn't neccessary.

Greenlee Knock out Punches
Greenlee part # 730EBB-120

Last time I inquired, they were around $450 in the states. In addition to the knock out punch, you need a 3/4" socket wrench (estimate $100), and 2" size socket (estimate $35) I wouldn't use anything less than 19" long socket wrench for good leverage. So estimated purchase price of this professional tool set between $550 - $600

Ultra Microfly Factory Perforated Fan Grill

First I cut out the center of the factory perforated grill to accomondate the shaft of the Greenlee Knock out Punch

The threaded cup portion of the Knock Out Punch goes inside the chassis first, then you thread the shaft into the cup until it's snug against the rear of the chassis. Then you crank the socket wrench as if you were tightening a large bolt until the Knock out Blade cuts through the metal.

Perforated Factory Grill removed quick!

We doing some custom order paint jobs for Performance-PCs, the custom mix paint color is 2005 Ferrari F430 factory red paint.

Paint is Automotive Acrylic Urethane by PPG.

Applying clear over paint to Silverstone and A70 top panels with HVLP (hi-volume-low-pressure) spray gun.

Panels arrive back at Mnpctech's studio and await assembly

The Lian Li A-70 is first up. The original window was freakin pop-riveted onto the panel! I thought theres no way I'm going to re-install with that method. I drilled out the holes and use these nifty anodized red socket head screws. I had got them years ago from a friend. I'm assembling the Silverstone TJ09 next, with it's sportscar inspired side intake ducts that case ought to really fit the Ferrari paint! More to come!

Lets take it outdoors for more photos, Wow! what a reflection!

The intake grill

Von Dutch Tribute Computer Case

Mnpctech.com dedication to Von Dutch!

Kenny Howard (aka Von Dutch) 1929-1992 was considered the father of modern pinstriping. By the mid-1950s Kenny ground breaking striping style was highly sought after by hot rodders to have their cars "Dutched". Kenny's most popular image was the "flying eyeball" He also influenced the emerging custom car designer/builders George Barris and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Dutch's influence has pierced case mod culture as well. Mnpctech's painter, Brad Galvin pays homage to Dutch by pinstriping a new Lian Li computer case.

To learn more about pinstriping, join StripeKult Pinstripers Forums

Watch YouTube Video!

Mnpctech.com Custom Painting

Mnpctech is offering custom paint as a new service.

My current painter, Lin Anderson isn't outfitted to handle color finishes, clearcoating or any large volume of work. This is why we never focused on offering custom paint outside of large customer projects. After a few weeks of humping the paint community forums, including craigslist, making phones calls, I found Brad Galvin. It turns out I drive by his house everyday. Brad is 34 and hes been painting professionally for 14 years. He does everything in house, including custom color finishes, clearcoating, candy pearls, airbrushing, pinstriping!

For quote, email me, pcbuilderATmnpctechDOTcom (don't post your inquiry here!)

Guidelines to asking for qoutes,

1. Include brand and case model or computer part. Include manufacturer product page link.

2. Describe in detail each part that will be painted. Sketches or examples are very helpful.

3. Include your zipcode, dimensions and weight of box you're shipping part (s) for paint to Mnpctech

4. You must dissassemble your case or parts before shipping. We will prep them for paint for you

Important guidelines about custom paint jobs from Mnpctech

1. Turnaround time will depend upon the complexity and resources needed for the job.

2. Airbrushed Murals have the best results when painted on cases with factory Gloss Black finish.

3. Airbrush artwork must be clearcoated. So be aware that clearcoat will change surface on factory brushed aluminum cases to a smooth painted glossy surface. You will have mismatched finish if you don't have entire case clearcoated. Examples of brushed aluminum cases are Lian Li, Coolermaster, Silverstone.

4. Artwork excludes copyrghted images. Unless you can show proof that we have permission to replicate artwork from whomever owns rights..

5. All custom paint jobs are on pre-paid in full basis only.
Project: Ghost of the Red Baron

Over my holiday break I decided to catch up on my own projects that were shelved while I concentrated customer projects. One of these personal projects was "the Ghost of the Red Baron" I've always loved the box artwork on Dynamix's Red Baron flight simulator game. (1990)

I'd like to twist this painting and imagine Manfred Von Richthofen's ghost is coming back for revenge!

For fun, I made this "Fokker DR1" inspired blueprint for the case mod

The case I've used is my all time favorite, the AMS CF-1009 gtower. You've probally seen this case used in my past projects here in my worklog section. I had bought several of these case after hearing that AMS has discontinued them. My mod formula, new bezel for 2x 120mm intake fans has never changed. Unfortunately AMS no longer makes this case.

CoolTechnica is the only e-retailor I've found that has them in stock, here

Why I liked this case.

1. You can remove the 2 piece acrylic bezel and plate for cutting fan holes.
2. LED and PWR/RESET buttons are screwed in versus glued
3. The 7 HD cage is removable. (+ 3, 3.5 bays = 11 HDs mounts)
4. It can be modified to accomondate modify Front and Rear 120 fans. (2x 120s in front)
5. It's painted aluminum, not anodized so less prep work painting

I'd still choose this case over any Lian Li or Coolermaster for modding. The simplistic plain jane design makes it a great blank canvas, plus it's sturdy!

The clear acrylic bezel and alum backing plate are fastened on with 6 large flathead screws.

The CF1009 arrvies with 2 puny 80mm intake fans. There is a lot of wasted real estate in the front of this chassis. As soon as you remove the front aluminum backing plate, you can visualize 2x 120mm intake fans.

The rear of the CF1009 has 2x 80mm exhaust fans above PSU and 1x 120mm exhaust fan
One of the biggest complaints about the CF1009 was the lack of a removable Motherboard tray. A removable MB trays are nice, but I've been building PCs before the case aftermarket exploded, so I've grown accustomed to cases without them.

My first task was to make a new mounting plate for 2x 120mm intake fans. I grab my trusty Jigsaw with 18 TPI cutting blade and remove the front mounting wall in the chassis.

You can breath in plent of air now.. lol! ...Ok, I better make you a new mounting plate ..heh

The new front mounting plate will be cut from 20 gauge sheet metal.
Here, I'm using a measuring Square.

To attach the new front plate, I used 1/8" pop rivet fasteners.

I'm measuring out the location for two 120mm intake fans. These 120mm wire fan guards will make great templates for tracing my fan hole & screw locations.

To make my 120mm fan holes, I use my Greenlee Knock out Punch.
This is the most efficiant means for cutting a clean, flawless hole.

More information about Greenlee knock Punch
Greenlee part # 730EBB-120 Last time I inquired, they were around $450 in the states + Large 3/4" socket wrench, and 2" socket. I wouldn't use anything less than 19" long socket wrench. Estimated purchase price of $550 new.

I first make pilot hole with a 1.5" hole saw attachment that allows me to fit the shaft of the Greenlee Knockout Punch

The shaft of the Greenlee Punch goes through 1.5" pilot hole. The threaded circular (stationary) cutting blade is pulled inward as you tighten the socket wrench.

The new 2x 120mm fan holes are made. The fan mounting holes were cut in a similar fashion with with a Roper Whitney Hand punch.

NEW! Case Modding Blog

Yep, I'm Blogging now and it's the perfect format for me. I suffer from MADD (Modders Attention Deficit Disorder) if you didn't know already?!. Seriously tho, I think theres a real need for a blog about modding and everything surrounding it. I've been performing pro case mods and sellsing my own custom parts for 7 years, so I've made many affiliates and friends in the mod community. I've get a lot of news to speard around.

Think of my blog as fast food. You can drive further and wait longer for something healthier, but you're too lazy

http://blogs.pcapex.com/mnpctech

PimpRig/PCApex Tribute PC (2 watercooled pcs, 1 case)

This post will explain my new avatar, thats my 3.5 yr old son, Jack standing next to this shiney beast. It was built for PCApex's owner, Gary Mullins as a tribute to Apex's former identity as PimpRig

Gary recently brought his new PC to it's first lan event in Indy this weekend, http://www.showdownlan.com/2007

I'll share some pics here once Gary posts them.

Gary posted message on the forum after arriving at the "Showdownlan"

QUOTE

I'm showing off the PimpRig Tribute PC for the first time! Smile You can see the build info here: http://forums.pcapex.com/speci....._case.html

Basically, it is a top-shelf modded rig concocted by mnpctech and filled with outstanding parts from some great sponsors including Ultra Products (Sponsor for ShowdownLAN). The one full tower case holds two complete, individually water-cooled, systems. One is an App/Game monster and the other is a 1U server cleverly mounted on the opposite side of the motherboard tray and will host files/game servers at the LAN. Here are the stats on the two systems:

PimpRig Side (Gaming PC):
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz Quad Core CPU OC'd @ 3.15GHz
EVGA nForce 680i (T1 Version) SLI Motherboard
EVGA 8800GTX 760MB Video Card OC'd at 630MHz GPU and 1010MHz Mem
4GB Super Talent 1000MHz (PC2-8000) DDR2 RAM
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card
x3 Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA 3G Hard Drives (Raid 5 Array - Documents, Work, Games)
74GB WD Raptor Hard Drive (Used for main OS boot drive + Apps)
Plextor PX-760A DVDRW
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W PSU (I also have an Ultra X3 1000W for backup )

PC Apex Side (Server PC):
Intel P4 LGA775 3.6GHz CPU
Tyan S5162 1U server motherboard (integrated video)
4GB Super Talent 667MHz (PC2-5300) DDR2 RAM
x2 Maxtor 120GB SATA Hard Drives (Raid 1 Array for server data redundancy)
Lite-On LH-20A1P SuperAllwrite OEM DVD Burner - 20x DVD±R Burn etc.
Seasonic 520W 1U Server PSU

Before, my life was simple as a Maxpoint Server Tower

After, wheres the lAn pArTay At??!

PCApex member who made contributions to the project.

TYAN 1U Sever Watercool Loop (leak testing)

PCApex
1U Loop installed

Custom Removable Motherboard tray for "Two" Motherboards

Dual 120 Rad Grill for DFI side watercool loop

Billet Handle

Machined Castor Wheels

DFI side water loop

Project Worklog: Qmicra2 SFF Custom Computers 11/12

In 2006, PCDesignLabs owner, Dave LaLopa introduced himself and his Qmicra case to me via email.

QUOTE

Hey Bill,

The case design is simply based on what SFF enthusiasts wanted... higher quality, better cooling, easier to work on and nice modding
features. It's built here in Rochester, NY and I use US based materials and labor whenever possible. I believe in having close ties with enthusiasts and we offer highly personalized service for our customers. I've liked your work since I found your website in 2004 which is how you got on the list to receive our product announcement. If your interested, I'd be happy to give you a grand tour of the case and it would be great to hear what you think about it.

I wasn't really in the market to buy a new case, but Dave's design was intriguing. His Qmicra was the first small form factor (SFF) case to accommodate an ATX power supply. This feature was a big deal at the time. I took Dave up on his offer of a tour over the phone. After hearing a detailed description from the designer/manufacturer himself, we slipped into nearly 3 hour conversation about the pc industry and market. Unfortunatetly I was pinned down with commitments so I never proposed a deal for me to mod the case for PCDesignLabs. The following year Dave contacted me again, but with a preview of version 2.0. Dave told me ge spent some time studying the art of watercooling under the masters at DangerDen. The Qmicra2 is the first and only commercially produced SFF case that will accommodate a water cooling system. It has internal mounts for a 2x120mm radiator, pump and clearance for most every CPU/GPU water-block. The radiator was also positioned high enough to allow room for the latest RAM heat spreaders.

(You know what I like about Dave? He keeps raising the bar in the SFF market)

This time around Dave was kind enough to offer me a pre-production sample to look over in person for a few weeks. "Take it for awhile, if it inspires you, we can talk further about an arrangement between us" After only a few days of the Qmicra2 habitating my workshop, I presented Dave with the idea of offering limited edition modified Qmicra2s. He agreed to try it out. I've started modding the case I've already adopted and another that will be delivered by Dave next weekend. Daves flying in from NY to work alongside me for 3 days. Oct, 12, 13, 14th. We plan to record highlights from the build for you to view on YouTube

Read more about the Qmicra2

You can cut plastics, metals, grind and polish. Dremel brand is most popular. Black & Decker and Craftsman versions are also popular.

Dremel Tutorial Link

I hear a lot of complaints about cutting discs breaking when cutting metal. You need to use aluminum reinforced discs like these Reinforced Dremel Cutting Discs

Reinforced 1.5" Dremel Cutting Discs. Available here

Cordless Power drill
Minimum volts recommened 14.4V) with bit sizes 1/16 through ˝ for cutting various mounting holes and
operating hole saw attachments. DeWalt brand power tools.

Hole saw attachments for Drill
For cutting fan holes in acrylic and metal.

80mm = 3” hole saw
92mm = 3.5” hole saw
120mm = 4.5” hole saw

Video Guide To Using A Hole Saw For Case Modding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxlMy0htuVA

Greenlee Knock out Punches
Greenlee part # 730EBB-120 Last time I inquired, they were around $450 in the states + Large 3/4" socket wrench, and 2" socket.
Case Mod Video (Turbine-style Cooling Fan)

Hi everybody at PlanetAMD64!,

In these 2 video segments, I show you how I modify and paint an old beige case with a Turbine-look cooling fan

Let me know what you think!

Part 1: I describe an old beige case I found and demonstrate the tools and products neccessary to mod and paint your case with a Turbine style front intake. You'll learn how I install a front fan duct in a bezel and apply body filler (Evercoat brand)

Part 2: I show you how to sand the body filler with a Mouse Sander so it's ready for paint. I then walk you through the steps in painting the bezel and case panels with "Plastikote" brand "Engine Enamel" spray paint.

Part 1

Part 2
