Throughout this full week we are going to be busy choosing beads & colourful cord to make a wood bead and knotting cord necklace. My version of this necklace is inspired by two great projects I found online. I originally saw this lacing and wood bead idea at Martha Stewart (Wood and Neon Lanyard Necklace), but made with plastic cording. I’ve been loving working with Chinese knotting cord (TanglesnKnots) since I tried my first Honestly WTF bracelet, so I decided to use the knotting cord. I love the bright, vibrant colours with the neutral, natural wood beads (Woodworks Ltd.).

Mother's-Day-2I like to have my necklace quite long, but the macrame closure makes it adjustable, so you have options. You can always cut your length shorter, but you can’t really add more cord

Mother's-Day-3For instructions to make the macrame cord closure, go to this link at Honestly WTF bracelet DIYs. I use a length of cord about 8 inches long and make the macrame length about 3/4 of an inch. You need a needle with a wide eye to stitch in the ends. I finish with a dab of glue to the macrame and the knots, for added security.

Mother's-Day-4These are gorgeous and I’m sure there’s lots of room to play with design. We’ll have to see what my students come up with. I hope all the moms in my class love them.

I’m so excited to meet, not only some amazing Vancouver bloggers, but also the talented, super cool Bri Emery (designlovefest) and Angela Kohler (Angela+Ithyle). I’ve been wanting to do this for years and seriously thought about attending in another city, but the cost just seemed too prohibitive. When I saw a tweet about upcoming classes I decided to check right away. Upon seeing Vancouver on the list I didn’t hesitate, I pounced. Then I quickly tweeted to friends that they should look into this too.rain-or-shine

I’ve made this look as a way of imagining what Bri might wear based on a whether we have a rainy weekend or a sunny one. I love that her style reflects her bright exuberant personality. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the later. Also keep your fingers crossed that I can be a human technical sponge. I need to absorb as much as possible, while looking cute (pictures will be a must) and having a whole lot of fun too.

I can find a way to add it to almost any meal. Recently though, I’ve been having troubles with cow’s milk, and after cutting it out of my diet (along with gluten) I’ve felt much better. I’ve still been able to eat goat and sheep milk products and that, thankfully, has included cheese. I’ve found a sheep’s milk regiano for my pasta and several versions of cheddar for my sandwiches, but am always on the lookout for more. Returning from my Spring Break trip we stopped at Whole Foods in Bellevue, WA, I was so pleased to find some more options to try. The creamy cheese on the bottom left is Cypress Grove Chèvre Midnight Moon, it’s so good with a rich nutty flavour. Cypress Grove Chèvre recommends serving it with a fig jam and I can’t wait to try that. In the bottom middle picture is a cheese with a golden rind, from Tumalo Farms of Oregon. Tumalo has created Pondhopper, “a semi-hard cheese delicately spiced with an echo of Cascade hops from a local microbrew.” I also added two Spanish cheeses to my selection from Whole Foods, a 6 month old Manchego and Drunken Goat, bottom right. These are both new to me, but not totally unique. Drunken Goat’s a delicious, mild Spanish cheese soaked in red wine for a few days. Manchego is another creamy, nutty selection. These are all similar and were great choices to try. I can’t wait to sample them with some homemade jams, olives, roasted peppers and maybe some salami as well.

Can’t wait until Sunday, when my two friends and I head south to Seattle, then on to Tucson, Az. I’m so ready for the sun and dry desert heat. I’ve been once before in February and it was so wonderful. I love the desert light, flora & fauna. I’m so happy to be heading to the Sonoran Desert Museum again. Hopefully they have the amazing cilantro pesto I still dream about four years later. Seeing agave, cholla and ocotillo again will be so fun, along with grackles, doves, and cactus wrens.

More fun than the end result is the process. I knew what I wanted these to look like, and I knew I didn’t want to do friendship bracelet type work. I wanted it wider and to be able to do a bar code stripe pattern. I spent hours looking for ideas online. Isn’t it funny how you can look & look & look, then suddenly there it is, like magic. I’m experimenting with base metal findings with an antiqued finishes. I’m loving the results so far, but I’m still tweaking (Remember when Tom Hanks said he had a problem that needed tweaking in You’ve Got Mail? I still hear his voice when I say it to myself.) Anyway if these prototypes are any indication, I’m on the right track. Stay tuned for more.
