A new software version for the Nokia N900,v.20.2010.36-2, has been released, adding full Ovi Suite support and various bug fixes and speed improvements.

Here are the official words:

A new software update is now available for your Nokia N900. The update adds Ovi Suite support to your N900 and makes it even easier to access and sync files and messages between your device and your desktop. In addition, we’ve added hundreds of tweaks and fixes that will make your N900 run faster and smoother than ever.

And there’s even more great news. Ovi Music Store is now accessible right from your N900 (where available). You can use your inbuilt browser to access music.ovi.com and download your favorite tunes straight to your device in DRM-free format.

Be sure to check out the latest games and apps from Ovi Store, like Angry Birds Level Packs 2 & 3, Kroll, Tower Boxx Deluxe 3D and Joiku WiFi Hot Spot. If you receive a not enough memory warning when you try to update the software, just uninstall a few apps and try again.

Nokia debuts ‘Touch and Type’ design with the latest Nokia X3-02

Nokia today unveils the super slim Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type, with a unique combination of a touch screen and traditional 12 button phone keypad. As Nokia’s first ‘Touch and Type’ phone, the Nokia X3 allows people to tap quickly on the bright color touch screen, as well as enjoy the familiarity of the full keypad for quick fire text messages and phone calls.

With its sleek and modern design coming in at a very thin 9.6mm – making it one of the slimmest Nokia phones ever – the Nokia X3 slips easily into the purse or the pocket, and looks the part with its brushed aluminum back cover which will come in five vibrant colors designed to suit any mood or wardrobe. New Developer Resources Announced by Forum Nokia

We had been using some of these tools for quite sometime, but Forum Nokia improved and introduces some new developer tools to ease design, develop and distribute mobile applications in Ovi Store. Lets see these tools in detail:

Free signing of Symbian Apps: This idea was introduces as a beta in June and now its open for all. Nokia will sign your Symbian applications for distribution in Ovi Store. Now developers do not have to buy Publisher ID to sign Symbian C++, Qt for Symbian or other applications. This step will motivate many individual developers to publish apps for Ovi Store. Free signeing was being demanded by publishers for a long time and now its available.

Remote Device Access: Remote Device Access (RDA) is a service that allows developers to test their mobile applications and services remotely on various Nokia devices based on Symbian and Maemo OS. Nokia N8: now thats what you call a smartphone

I was waiting to write about N8 much before but everyday a new feature of this device was revealed. N8 really looks something which will change the dimensions of mobile devices.

N8 holds so many features which are the first in any mobile phone. Lets see all features one by one.

Camera

The first thing you notice about it is that N8 is Nokia's first 12MP Camera phone with Xenon flash and HD video recording facility. It also hosts feature like Face detection due to its dedicated imaging Sensors.

Dolby Digital Sound

The Nokia N8 will incorporate Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround Sound technology thus offering a true home theater experience with HD audio.

Display and Design

N8 has a simple yet stylish form factor. The phone looks quite sleek and light. It has a 3.5" 640x360 pixel, AMOLED display. It employs capacitive technology for touch screen. It will be nice to use multi-touch features on this screen(thanks to Symbian^3). Not to forget that N8 has a dedicated 3D graphics HW accelerator.

Connectivity

N8 supports 5 GSM frequencies first time in the world. This means the device will work anywhere in the world. With a 12MP Camera, N8 allows you to view your high quality videos and photos via HDMI-out connectivity to your HDTV. It also have Bluetooth 3.0 along with A-GPS and FM transmitter and Wi-Fi 802.11n support.

Symbian^3 OS

N8 is the first device in the world to run on Symbian^3 OS. You now have three customizable home-screens full of shortcuts and widgets. Native multitasking, support for multi-touch gestures, integration with Qt development framework, pinch-zoom in pictures and browser, Cover-flow integration in Music player are some highlights of Symbian^3.

Connect your External HDD or Memory Stick with adapter to N8 and browse all files you have there, directly through your device. Really helpful feature for me.

All these feature and still Nokia managed to keep it at at 370 Euros (Without Taxes)/Rs. 22000.

Nokia X2: A budget phone with 5MP Camera

Yes you heard it right. Nokia today announced a very basic range device Nokia X2. The candybar X2 sports a 2.2-inch QVGA screen and weighs 81 grams.The phone also packs dual speakers, dedicated music keys, FM stereo and support for up to 16GB of storage via microSD card.Other key features include Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB 2.0.

X2 also offers direct access to Facebook from the homescreen and comes with Nokia Messaging for email, Instant Messaging and Ovi Store. But the main attraction of the device is a 5 megapixel camera and the phone is priced just about 85 Euros( Rs.5100 apprx).

It combines high end E-Series professional business tools with personal networking and entertainment capabilities. The phone has a very useful homescreen with a number of shortcuts and direct access buttons. Nokia E5 has a 5 MP Camera and integrated GPS for maps and navigation with Ovi Maps 3.0 support. It will be available by Q3 2010 at a price of around 180 Euros (Rs. 8000 aprx).

Nokia C3 Announced

Nokia today announced its upcoming devices, Nokia C3, Nokia C6, Nokia E5; all of them having QWERTY keypads. The handsets target better messaging and social networking tools at affordable cost.

I think Nokia C3 is the first S40 device having a full QWERTY keypad. Nokia C3 has a content rich home-screen with direct access to Social Networking Apps. The phone has a 320 x 240 px 2.4 inch screen. C3 supports Ovi Mail and Ovi chat also. It has a basic 2MP camera and it supports memory expansion up to 8GB. The best part is that it has Wi-Fi as well. Theses are very impressive features at a price rate of 90 Euros(Rs. 5500 aprx.). The device will be available from Q2 2010.

Hi All,

We are very happy to announce that Mobile Application Development Workshop (Already announced by Balagopal at http://tinyurl.com/yhpe5nu) was a great success. About 200 participants of various Universities and IT Industry attended the Two Day Workshop at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat under their annual technical event MindBend.

First day Prof. Kiran Trivedi delivered a brief introduction to Forum Nokia Developers Community and various developer resources and support provided by Forum Nokia. The second Session of day one included an interactive discussion of comparison of various programming platform for Symbian Developers. Participants were also given a highlight of Maemo 5 Platform and upcoming MeeGo project.

Day Two of workshop was full of hands on coding examples for various platforms such as Qt, Widgets and Python. Chintan Umraliya conducted a session on Nokia Web Runtime Widget Platform which included coding examples and introduction to Nokia Mobile Web templates. The session provided a detailed guidance of various WRT development IDEs, WRT plug-ins and utilities such as API Bridge and WRT Platform Services. Chintan Umraliya also presented various developers opportunities with Nokia Ovi Store.

The Final session was conducted by Mehul Jajal which explained various developer tools provided by Forum Nokia. The session included a live demo of setting up Symbian Development Environment on a PC and installing Qt for Symbian tools. This session was followed by number of code examples of Qt for Symbian and some small application development.

We had also planned a Competition together with Forum Nokia after workshop. The Competition included a Quiz about various discussions during two day sessions and Forum Nokia activities. The winner of the competition was given a Nokia 5233 device by Forum Nokia.

We received a great support from Forum Nokia during entire event. We would like to thank Forum Nokia for its motivation and help. We special thank Balagopal, Shiraz Dutta and other FN India staff.

Nokia today announced a new version of Ovi Maps with FREE walk (pedestrian) and driving (car) turn-by-turn, voice guided navigation functionality. Ovi Maps has global coverage, with 74 countries covered by its navigation services. Maps for all regions will be available, for free, for loading over the air or pre-loading via a desktop computer. Traffic information and city guides, from Lonely Planet and Michelin, will also be made available at no extra cost. Nokia 5800 Gets Updated to Firmware 40.0.005

Nokia has just released a new software solution for one of the most popular handsets it has on the market at the moment, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The new firmware available for the device is 40.0.005, and it replaces firmware version 31.0.8, previously released for this music phone.

There is a wide range of new features that software update 40.0.005 reportedly brings to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the most important of which is said to be kinetic scrolling.

Qt Technology Preview for Maemo 5

Nokia announces today the official port of Qt development framework for Maemo 5 platform. The port itself will be based on Qt’s upcoming version 4.6 and is scheduled for final release in Q1 of 2010. The announcement will boost the application development for Nokia N900 device which is built on the open source Linux-based Maemo platform.

My Wonderful Nokia N97

Just Wonderful...

I have been using my new Nokia N97 for last many days and let me tell you the device is just superb to have. There too many great features of the phone to describe. Let me just highlight few I like the most...

Looks Great

The phone looks very beautiful.

The keys are placed very nice and the QWERT keyboard is much finger friendly. The wide screen is great to watch movies.The smartphone transforms from a touch slate to a landscape QWERTY device.

Home Screen

The N97home screen personalised with number of useful widgets is a really what makes the device so special. The you can add widgets to stay in touch with world without need to refrsh webpages again and again. You can add your favourite contacts, put the music player, keep in touch of your facebook friends, watch the latest from stockworld, Track weather of your area with Accuweather, get news hadlines around the world or even add an RSS feed.

Camera and Music

The device has a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash making it a nice tool to take snaps. The camer application is much better than N96. Video reording is much improved at 32 fps and yes Video Editing tool makes a comeback.

The N97 speakers are nice to provide good music experience (however I still prefer my N96 for music).

Sensors, GPS and Ovi Maps

It has a bunch of sensors like Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor, Magnetometer Sensor, Proximity Sensor giving number of additional facilities.

The A-GPS performance is much better than previous devices. Ovi Maps along with compass makes navigation a much smoother experince.

Battery

The BP-4L 3.7V 1500 mAh battery of N97 provides GSM talk time up to 9.5 is just enough to keep you tension free while travelling. (However device becomes bit heavier)

USB charging is now finally supported.

Memory and CPU

Nokia N97 comes with 32GB memory which can be extended up to 48GB by MicroSD card. The 434MHz ARM11 CPU is makes device much faster.

Browsing

So far it is the best Nokia browser. Pages load quite smoothly. Its nice to have Kinetic Scrolling feature making navigation much smooth.

Nokia introduced a series of new widget plug-in tools for S60 developers, desktop designers and web content creators providing more efficient conversion of standard web code and scripting languages into new mobile apps and services. The Nokia Web Runtime Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver, Nokia WRT plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio and the updated WRT plug-in 2.0 for Aptana Studio enable programmers writing in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax code and other standards-based technologies.

Each plug-in offers developers tools to create new and import existing widget projects and then preview, debug, validate, package, and deploy their widgets. Each development tool offers advanced code editing features, which the plug-ins extend by offering code completion for the Web Runtime API 1.0. Additional features are then provided in each plug-in. This year in the annual function of the college TechTalent-2009, I was awarded as "Talent of The Year" for my various extra-ordinary activities and achievements.

I t is really a great feeling to be honoured by our very own Institute S. S. Engineering College, Bhavnagar-India. Gargi Das was also awarded with me.

Python workshop at CSI DAY

Gujarat(India) on a roll in Mobile Application Development...

It is just another example that the students in Gujarat are very keen and interested in Mobile Field.

This time it was the celebration day of Computer Society of India at the venue Baroda (India) where I conducted a workshop.

The registrations for the workshop were full before week and the hall was fully packed on the event day with about 200 students.

The one-day workshop was entirely conducted by me (Chintan Umraliya) and my friend Gargi Das giving the students a hands-on experience on PyS60 platform.

The first session by Gargi Das introduced various development platforms and the fundamentals of mobile technology. The session gave a brief introducton of various supports and platforms provided by Forum Nokia to the developers.

In second and final session conducted by Chintan Umraliya gave live demostration of application development using PyS60. The session highlighted various developer tools, services and resources provided by Forum Nokia.

Here Comes Nokia Ovi Store

On Monday, Nokia announced its much awaited OVI store at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009. Nokia Ovi store is a virtual storefront where developers can upload applications and consumers can easily download them. It will be a very nice platform for the developer community to monitize their applcation, so again Nokia is as always enhancing the support to the developers community.

Nokia announced that the store will be open for business starting in May. Nokia's N97 will be the first Nokia device to have the application store software pre-integrated. The N97, which was announced in December, goes on sale in June. Nokia phone users, including those using S40 and S60 phones, will be able to download the application starting in May. Developers will get a 70 percent cut of revenue from the store for their application.

Nokia is very confident that the Ovi application store is different from the others. This is not just a place to find applications, It's a smart store, that is not just for smartphones. It actually suggests things you might like and adds social location dynamics to show you relevant applications. And it shows you what your friends have bought. And it changes the inventory based on where you are."

For one, the store is not limited to providing applications for smartphones. It's not only about smartphones anymore. The store will also track applications that users are downloading and it will be intelligent enough to suggest other applications that might be of interest. And finally, it will also provide relevant applications based on what friends have downloaded.

Today I would like to announce my application Calls Info to the readers. It is an enhanced version of S60 Logs application. It has number helpful features for users.

Here are some of the key features of the application.

Key Features:

Recent Calls:

A graphical analysis of your recent incoming and outgoing Calls.

Calls Distribution:

Know the persons who you contacted the most in recent days. It finds 6 most contacted numbers and shows the total call duration of each of them. It compares it to the rest all other calls' duration.

SMS Info:

Now get to know how many SMS you sent to a particular number and know the total umber of SMS sent.

Estimate Bill:

Calculate your monthly amount spent on SMS and Calls and get to know the total bill at the end of the month
