Samsung has just presented the most awaited smartphone of the year, the Galaxy S III, at a spectacular premier hosted in London's Earl Court, one of the fighting arenas in the upcoming Olympics, before over a thousand guests.

Its specifications do not differ much from what was guessed over the past few weeks, and an air of slight disappointment was sensed among the gathered crowd – a quad-core processor, a 4.8-inch 720p screen, an 8-megapixel camera and 8.6-millimeter thickness are not things unprecedented in the smartphone world.

Samsung Galaxy S IIIStill, everyone who had the opportunity to try this device could see in the first few minutes of working with it that every feature – even though already seen in the competition’s camp – is a step up in real terms: more contemporary, polished and modern than the rival’s models. Above all, I am talking about the HTC One X, which has almost identical hardware characteristically. I had my hands on the Galaxy S III and I'm convinced, without a doubt, that this is the best Android OS smartphone at the moment.

Build & Design

The device is made of a very solid and convincing plastic alloy and seems incredibly light when held in the hand, weighing in at 133 grams. The back cover’s texture, its rounded edges, and the entire shape of the smartphone largely helped it to offer the same experience as if one was holding a substantially smaller device, despite the mass and dimensions. For comparison purposes, the iPhone 4S gives the impression that it is much heavier, although it has a 1.3-inches smaller display. Similarly, the HTC One X seems much lighter when held than it actually is, but it does not seem as light as Galaxy S III.

The Galaxy S III appears rather plastic on photographs, but in reality, it is considerably more convincing. It is robust, solid, designed to perfection, and looks like a modern and powerful smartphone.

The 1280 x 720, Super AMOLED touchscreen covered in Gorilla Glass 2 is very impressive and again, it is clear that it is slightly better than the screen offered by HTC’s One X. Even though it is PenTile Matrix, the display looks especially good when objects are moved across it. This includes widgets, icons or pop-up windows with videos which can be turned on while one is doing anything else, which is a fine software addition designed for this device.

Pixelisation upon animation is not noticeable even along sharp edges, something which we have not previously had the opportunity of experiencing with Android. The screen’s reflection is almost brilliant – even though it is glossy, it does not take lightly to fingerprints and provides durable contrast, irrespective of the viewing angle.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy S IIIAnother thing that was unfamiliar on devices with Android prior to the Galaxy S III (even though it has been present on the iPhone for years): absolutely smooth scrolling and zooming in and out on web sites. Although Flash support was not activated on the test copies of the device I was testing, scrolling and zooming of web sites was absolutely swift and smooth, without any lags. This can be credited to Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 4 Quad chipset which, clearly, offers even more optimal performance than NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor, used in the One X.

In my hands-on testing, I tried Samsung's S Voice, a direct competition to Apple’s Siri, and saw practically no difference, apart from the fact that it seemed Galaxy S III was solving the tasks slightly faster (this depends on the internet connection speed, of course). S Voice gave almost identical answers to various inquiries as did Siri. The advantage of S Voice is that it understands English even with the most varied of accents, including French, German, Spanish and Korean.

It is also a good thing that it includes a 64GB microSD card slot, even though it comes with 1GB of RAM and 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage. This will encourage users to generate files which take up significant amounts of memory more frequently, like 1080p videos. Photographs can even be taken simultaneously as videos are being recorded, just like with HTC’s One X.

Interestingly enough, the Galaxy S III comes with a Micro-SIM card slot. Few other handsets do, but the iPhone 4S is on the list.

Preliminary Conclusion

It could be said that Samsung has just presented a smartphone that offers the best of what the competition is offering and a tad bit more. It will surely secure many purchasers, and guarantee even greater success than recorded by its two Galaxy S predecessors.

The Galaxy S III, which will be the official smartphone of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, should be available on the European market at the end of May and in the U.S. in June, with LTE support added.

Can ANY Blackberry be unlocked?

Yes only if your Blackberry is GSM. As mentioned above some Blackberrys are dual Technology: GSM/CDMA. Those Blackberrys can be unlocked and used on GSM providers. •    Blackberry 9530/9550/9630 once unlocked will only work on AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers & Fido's EDGE (no 3G)
•    Blackberry 9700 from T-Mobile once unlocked will only work on AT&T's EDGE but not 3G
•    Blackberry 9700 from T-Mobile or Wind Mobile once unlocked will work on all GSM carriers as EDGE, but 3G will only work on these 2 networks in North America. In other parts of the world, you will be able to get 3G from providers offering 3G on 1700MHz, 2100 MHz bands.

So as you can see, there is are still things you need to check. Most of the time, most Blackberrys that are quad-band will work worldwide on EDGE, but in some cases ex: Canada, where Bell/Telus/ only have a 3G HSPA Network, if you buy an 8900 which is quad-band but not 3G compatible and unlock it, you won't be able to use it with Bell/Telus because they only have a 3G network and no EDGE to fall back on.

Always best to ask before unlocking your phone just in case.

Verizon/Sprint have SIM cards, can I use an unlocked Blackberry with them?

The SIM cards that Verizon & Sprint ship with their dual technology phones such as the 8830/9530/9550/9630 are only meant to be used when roaming outside North America. In other words, your line is tied to the phone using the ESN. If you plan on traveling and would like to roam with them, you will need to call them and have them activate the SIM card for International use. There is no way to use your Verizon/Sprint line on their SIM card in North America at the moment.

Does Unlocking void my Warranty?

This has been a question asked over and over again with different opinions. We can confirm that unlocking your phone remotely by code will not void the warranty. In the past, some phones needed to be opened, software tampered with in order to unlock it and that obviously would void the warranty. If you call your provider and ask them the question, they will most likely say that it does, because that's what they are trained to say. We personally exchanged numerous unlocked Blackberrys with ATT/T-Mobile/Verizon/Rogers and never had any issues.

Once my Blackberry Unlocked, will all features such as BBM/Email/Browser work?

Yes they will, but you need to make sure that you have a Blackberry Data Plan with the provider you will be using. In some cases you will need to load the Service Books manually to your phone in order for all features to work. You can find a lot of threads here with step by step instructions. In some cases you will also need to make sure that the PIN has been released by previous provider if phone has previously been used.

What is MEP and SP Unlock Code?

MEP=Mobile Equipment Personalization and is basically the unlock code you need to unlock most Blackberrys.

SP= Service Provider lock is a new lock that Bell/Telus have lately added to their GSM Blackberrys.

Most Blackberry phones only have the MEP lock.

How do I know if my Blackberry is Unlocked?

You can insert a SIM card in your phone and then go to Options/Advanced Options/SIM card and type the letters "mepd" (without the quotes)

If Network says Disabled or Inactive, that means your Blackberry is already unlocked.

If Network says Enabled or Active, that means your phone is locked.

If Network says Blocked, that means the only way to unlock your phone would be for us or any equipped shop to physically have your phone.

How many digits is the unlock code and is it reusable?

How many attempts do I have to enter the correct code?

Usually your Blackberry will come with 10 tries or 255. Before you enter the code, the phone will say "Enter Network MEP Code (xx Left)" The number there will be how many tries you have left.

If your phone says 0 left, the only way to unlock it will be for us or anyone else to physically have your phone.

I enter the unlock code and get "Code Error" but the attempts counter doesn't go down?

It's a known issue on some Blackberrys. If you get "Code Error" and the counter hasn't gone down, that means that your phone accepted the code and unlocked.

If the counter goes down, then you have the wrong code or waited too long to press Trackball/Trackpad/Enter after entering the code.

That’s the 4 words that best describe the Samsung Galaxy Note.

I was fortunate enough to obtain a review set from Samsung Malaysia, and the first 24 hours has left me in awe at what they have done with the Galaxy Note.

Inside the box, the beautifully made Galaxy Note comes with manuals, a 2500mAh battery, a microUSB cable, a USB wall charger, and a pair of Samsung earphones.

Big Processor, Big Display

The display is big – 5.3inches big – with a thin bezel of about half a cm. This might be a bit tricky for people with small hands, but it fits nicely in my hands. One handed operation wasn’t complicated, though it will require some getting used to. The 1.4GHz dual-core Exynos, made everything smooth and buttery. Still, it’s almost as smooth as the SGS2, but do remember – the Note runs on a significantly higher display resolution.

The Galaxy Note boasts a 1280×800 resolution display; called the Super AMOLED HD. Everything looks breathtaking – even better than the Samsung Galaxy S2. Once Ice Cream Sandwich with hardware acceleration arrives on the Note, it will become just as smooth, if not better than iOS.

The Note has an 8MP camera with LED flash, and a 2MP front camera. Both does a great job, and it is rumored to be the same cameras from the SGS2. And like the Samsung Galaxy S2, The Galaxy Note takes crisp and clear photographs with ease. Full HD videos (1080p) plays easily on the Note, and to say it is more captivating than the Galaxy S2′s Super AMOLED Plus display, is an understatement. The speaker is loud and makes a perfect conference calling companion.

Less Touchy Buttons

The phone comes with minimum hardware buttons. There are only 3 – the home button, power button and volume rocker. This minimalist approach makes the Note not only a fantastic device to hold, but also a thing of beauty to the eyes. If you think the front is good enough to mesmerize you, you’ll salivate peeking at its back. The battery cover is etched just like the Samsung Galaxy S2, and this provides a good grip for all you butterfingers out there.

Home, Sweet Homescreen.

Once booted up, you’ll immediately find many TouchWiz similarities to the Samsung Galaxy S2. It’s almost a clone of the S2, except that this version of TouchWiz is improved in a good way. At the homescreen, you’ll see an icon for S Memo – an application developed specifically for the Galaxy Note – which allows you to scribble notes just like you’re working on a notepad. Samsung incorporated infinite looping into their homescreen, and you’ll find yourself reaching the screen that you want, fast – regardless of you swiping to the left of to the right. Pinch to overview is still there, so you could quickly zip between homescreens too. Your homescreen is a 5 by 5 icon display area, and this has been improved from the 4 by 4 icon homescreen on the SGS2.

An App Drawer Full Of Love

When you open the app drawer, you are lovingly greeted with the same 5 by 5 grid from the homescreen. The same smooth scrolling animations meet your slightest touch, while the display’s vivid Super AMOLED HD shouts for your attention. If you prefer to see your apps in an alphabetical order, you can switch to list mode, which will also allow you to zip immediately to the app you are looking for from the alphabetical scrollbar on the right. As a person who carries about 200 apps in my phone, this addition is always welcome.

Gingerbread, Waiting For An Icy Treat

The device runs the Gingerbread 2.3.5 and is confirmed to receive Ice Cream Sandwich soon. Initially, I was surprised. I was expecting a Honeycomb interface, but Gingerbread already gets the job done. There is stylus support in Ice Cream Sandwich, and it would be interesting to see how that would boost the functionality of the S Pen.

Write With Style

The S Pen is a joy to use. It’s easy, simple and intuitive. Samsung kept the S Pen gestures to a minimum, which is good thing. With just a few taps and swipes of the S Pen, you can capture screenshots, open apps, exit apps, and even toggle the menu button. The accuracy of the pen is commendable, and Samsung has done a fantastic job in making sure this works. I tried using the S Pen on the SGS2, but it doesn’t function (obviously), and I can only conclude that there must be some awesome S Pen API under the Note’s hood. Apart from just taking doodles, the S Memo and S Pen also makes an impressive feat – converting handwriting to text. I tested this app 3 times, and I must say that the accuracy of the converter is very high – accurately capturing every word that I am attempting to express. While using the S Pen in the S Memo app, the device is intelligent enough to distinguish between an accidental stroke (when touched with your hand) and the actual pen stroke.

3G Browsing Powerhouse

Having become accustomed to browsing on the SGS2, I did find the stock browser on the Galaxy Note required some getting used to. The Note’s browser is similar to the original Galaxy Tab browser, but with speed improvements. It’s faster and smoother than the original Tab, but a little behind the SGS2 browser. Considering Ice Cream Sandwich will pack hardware acceleration, the browser will cut through the World Wide Web like a hot katana through butter.

More Than Enough Power To Last The Day

First impressions last forever. I’m a moderate to high 3G user, and I’m already accustomed to good battery management habits. Testing the device on the first day (after a full charge), the battery lasted me more than 16 hours – with about 10% left in the tank. This is an impressive feat considering that I’m always checking emails, messaging and browsing on the go non-stop.

Lightning Fast GPS Lock With The Barometer

The Galaxy Nexus comes with a barometer, and so does the Galaxy Note. If you think Google was kidding about increased GPS lock speeds, you’ll be in for a surprise. With data and GPS on, I ran GPS Status, one of the trusted apps to test a device’s GPS capability. The first lock downloads AGPS data and took about 5 seconds. Subsequent locks without additional AGPS data download consistently lock at about 1-2 seconds. The phone locks on to the satellite as fast as the GPS Status app launches. Slow GPS locks will definitely be a thing in the past. Even the “future-proof” SGS2 clocks 6 seconds with AGPS data downloaded.

Would I recommend this device? Hell yeah! I think Samsung is tapping into the enterprise category and this device with be a strong contender in this category. The device is a godsend for users who work a lot with market research, Powerpoints, Word Documents and Photoshop. For the average Jane and Joe, this phone will give them a full-fledged entertainment device that will not disappoint. I find that the phone will fit perfectly in the hands of business professionals and creative masterminds alike.
