Ah, do I hear more controversy in the gaming community? Surely, I jest. Some rather innovative gaming programmers are miffed as others nix their creative abilities and copy their games. How bad is it, whom does it hurt, and why are such open-source advocates now angry at the borrowing of gaming themes and styles of play?

Indeed there was terrific article not too long ago in the Los Angeles Times titled "Game Developers Fight a Cloning War - Some Creators Feel Cheated By Alleged Idea Theft, But Others Think Cloning Can Be Good for Gaming" by Jamin Brophy-Warren, which was published on April 18, 2011. The article discusses the challenges of proprietary themes and concepts in video, internet, and computer gaming along with the proverbial quote; "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" motif.

Question is; when does outright copying of a computer game idea violate patent laws, or proprietary source? Further, I ask; is it illegal, in poor taste, or just unethical to make such copies, and when genres are copied in the movies, books, literature, and computer games who wins, and who really loses?

If there is a market for games of certain genres, styles, and scenarios then surely gaming programmers will come to the gamer's, and consumer's rescue right? I mean if there is money out there and folks desire certain types of games, you can bet gaming entrepreneurs will fulfill those wants and needs - that's how it works in the market place and the gaming sector and computer game industry is surely no different.

Consider if you will the counter argument to the gaming programmers who get pissed-off that others are basically copying their ideas, and merely changing the graphics. What If - no one was allowed to copy a given genre in literature, novels, or movies? There would be only one Western Movie, one Romance Novel, one Science Fiction Novel with aliens, etc. Would that really be fair to the public, who wants to be entertained with money in hand?

Now the computer gamer programmers are angry that folks are copying their style, or various version of play, should they be?

After all the more others copy them, the more gamers buy games in that genre or using those styles, which makes it that much more powerful and therefore, more money for those who produce new games, and more sales for the old ones too, longer shelf life of active sales. Yahoo has decided to install giant touch screen video games in twenty bus shelters in San Francisco so people waiting for the bus can play against people at other bus shelters while they wait. Players have a choice of four mini games, single or multiplayer and results are updated in real time allowing neighborhoods to see how they are doing against cross city rivals. The neighborhood with the best score wins a block party some time in February with the band OK Go to perform.

Almost sounds like as much fun as playing games on your smart phone except that you have to hang out at a bus shelter. Great way to pass the day for workers and students alike. Take a look at this worker cleaning the bus shelter and students so wrapped up in the competition missing their bus. If this becomes a thing of the future there will be a lot of people losing their jobs and a lot of late slips being handed out at schools. These touch screens are scheduled to be removed by the end of January but if this campaign was as successful as believed it would be you'll be seeing a lot more of these game screens popping up around the world. First off it's time to get sporty. A really massive genre here. Will it be football manager? Everybody's golf? Adidas Street football is a bit unlikely. Can you believe Wii has got it with Sports. Would you believe it would be a newbie like this.

Ok time for the first person genre. Only a handful of games will be a contender in this genre. I think it's a PC game. Poor graphics abound. Doom. Wrong. Halo three. Let's get serious. Fantasy is a genre with huge amounts of buys, so maybe Golden Harvest? A character blitz but it could be SC II. Almost. Believe it or not it's Pokemon.

What do we have next. Puzzle lovers get ready. It could be Monopoly possibly. No, this is the most classic of them all. The classic. The one and only. Tetris. The best.

Xbox 360 Kinect Sports Review

The Nintendo Wii may have been the first to do sports and motion controls well, but Kinect sports has taken that foundation and expanded it greatly. 'Nintendo Wii Sports' was a hard single, while Kinect Sports is a double into the gap.

Kinect sports expands on the amount of sports and functionality by allowing players to use their legs instead of just swinging their arms wildly. Anyone that has played the Wii sports games knows that the motion detector can sometimes be finicky, and others downright frustrating. The Kinect does a wonderful job of tracking and integrates a player's movements for most of the sports and games that are included.

The graphics are understated, and very easy on the eyes the interface is very simple to use and understand. The game is very clearly geared toward family fun, or for groups of friends to pick up and play. Customization is nothing ground breaking, though you can build up your avatars statistics and acquire awards and trophies.

Kinect sports includes: Boxing, track, volleyball, soccer, bowling and ping pong (referred to as table tennis by the overtly rabid fans of the "sport").

Boxing is great fun, and was probably the most seamless transition from real life to digital. My abs and neck have never hurt so badly from playing video games. There were a few tracking hiccups while trying to stay within the virtual area, but most of the problems were with me banging my shin on my coffee table.

Volleyball was the second best portion of the game. Though your player is automatically moved around the sand for you, you still have a good amount of control. Spiking and scoring is very satisfying.

Table tennis was exciting and was even more punishing on my sore abs. The animations are really fun to watch in this game. Be wary of multiplayer, having multiple arms flailing can be quite dangerous.

Bowling, I have to say, was a pretty big disappointment. The mode doesn't seem very deep. It makes sense that you don't need to run towards the television, but something just felt a little dry about it. I'm not sure how the Kinect tracks your English and draw etc. and it seems like it wasn't very well thought out. I do like how you can just pick your ball, place your feet, and throw the ball however.

Track and field took me back to the days of the old Nintendo game version. This game really gets the blood flowing while it has you run in place and jump over hurdles etc. I wasn't expecting a great deal of fun out of this, but once my body gets accustomed to moving so much, I can really see using this game a lot.

Soccer is the clear loser of the modes. You are mostly stationary while most of the work is done. Standing in place and kicking and passing are not most people's idea of fun.

I wasn't expecting much outside of a few minutes of fun with Kinect sports, but really came away impressed. After so many motion debacles, and the corny marketing of the Kinect, (I think this was the common consensus among most gamers) I can be forgiven for not having high expectations.

Bioware one of the more respectable video game developers in the world seems they are on steroids. They are producing one masterpiece after another. This article will talk about the Dragon Age role playing game series. Bioware first began the RPG series with Dragon Age Origins. Then they released an expansion named DAO - Awakening. And now they have released Dragon Age 2. Origins was such a great RPG. Awakening divided the players, some liked it a lot, some not so much and others hated it. Dragon Age 2 comes to stir the pot really good with many improvements.

Dragon Age 2 is an incredible role playing game and many developers and gamers consider it a reference point in the RPG industry. Unfortunately not all the gamers have the same opinion. There are players who need, ask and demand for more. They are not easily satisfied. Those people have played a lot of video games and have developed a solid base of experience. They know what they want and need and what is important in a game to achieve the "wow" title. I am one of them. If I am going to pay for something I want it to make me scream with excitement. Did DAO 2 achieve that? No definitely not, but still the game is wonderful and totally worth the money and your time.

Mostly across US and Europe, many video game magazines gave really positive reviews but it did not get the the results of Origins. Some gave it titles and awards like: Editor's choice award, Best RPG of the decade, Greatest game experience and things like. Others stated they had many sleepless nights playing this game and they feel no regret about it.

On the other hand there were many magazines and reviewers who were not pleased as much as the people in the above paragraph. Some said that the area of setting was way too small, there were no noticeable characters, the combat system has been simplified too much and they created it to attract more new players in Dragon Age without respecting the old hardcore players, or at least do something to connect those two parts more smoothly. Others said that with all the improved polish the basics still need some work. My opinion on this is that a lot of old timers got really disappointed with the simplified system, I am not happy with it either.

Mass Effect 2 - A Mind Blowing Action RPG

In Mass Effect 1, the game developers of this game series set the foundations to create one of the greatest franchises in the video game history. Fortunately BioWare (the company behind the game) in Mass Effect 2 created an incredible complicated scenario for a video game at least, plus the developers listened to the gaming community and fixed all those little and big things that annoyed the gamers. Furthermore they added so much content and even more good features that they extended the gameplay and the experience by far when compared to the first part of the series.

Mass Effect 2 was an avalanche for the gaming world. It got so many awards that the developers were walking around like peacocks. And that is understandable and fair enough. The scriptwriters did an amazing job. If a studio would make a movie from their script, it would skyrocketed in the charts within a week. The depth and complexity of the story is incredible. It is one of the features that makes you to keep going without thinking about anything else. BioWare has hired some of the most talented people available in the video games industry and that is unquestionable. There is no other way to create such incredibly beautiful jewels

Now, every game has a few bugs and glitches, every game has a few faults that is not possible to be avoided. Despite all the testing before the game gets published. Every computer behaves differently, there will always be some problems no matter what.Do not forget that a video game is an incredible complicated program with some polished images and colors (a really simplified explanation). But when you play Mass Effect 2 you forget about all that. Fortunately these flaws are just not enough to hamper someone' s experience. In the first part there were some bad features that made the game irritating every now and then. Gamers and buyers were listened and all those bad little things disappeared.

While playing Mass Effect 1 it is a fact that someone will end up with more questions than the time he started. That was done on purpose by the scriptwriters and the marketing division so they could create a foothold for their next product. And let me tell you that it was a very, very successful technique. So now at the second part of our story questions will be answered and some small gaps will be filled.

The Most Anticipated Game Of 2011 Is The Action RPG Mass Effect 3

Statements similar to the title can be found all over the internet. Especially if someone is a gamer and he likes hanging out in gaming forums, or he likes to read video game magazines. They all say the same thing again and again AND again. Whether they are trying really bad to advertise the game or they really believe that it is going to be really good.

Statements like the title are way too bold and someone should be careful when and where to say those. By saying such comments you have to be absolutely sure that this game WILL be if not the best then one of the best. Saying this as a gamer and a Mass Effect fan, yes I am looking forward for the last part of the trilogy. Because I want to see how it ends. But I am a Mass Effect FAN.

Bioware (the company which developed the game) bets its reputation on this game. So it better be as good as they say it will be. Even if the game will not be better but will follow the same standards as Mass Effect 2 did then it will still be a success. But gamers these days need and want more than that. When they pay for a sequel they demand that it will be much better than the previous part of the series. Until now Bioware is always listening to its fans and always support the people who pay them. Let's hope they won't disappoint us.

Personally I believe the new Mass Effect 3 and at the same time the last part of the series will be more than epic. It will shake the foundations of the gaming world. Ok maybe I am exaggerating but I am sure, they will make sure that it will be a lifetime experience.

So what we know so far? After the events in Mass Effect 2 where they created more questions than answers, we already knew that there would be a massive Reaper attack. And all the Galactic Alliance was getting prepared for that. Among the things that we didn't know was where they would strike first and if the Alliance would have a chance to defend themselves and strike back.

The trailer of Mass Effect 3 comes to answer some of those questions. So we know that the reapers will strike at Earth and they will almost wipe out the entire population. We know that Earth, humans, and their defenses are no match against the Reapers. We know that the Alliance or Serberus under the command of Shepard will strike back. But still those information create even more answers.

Was Earth the first planet they hit or it was the last one? Did the Alliance and the rest of the races survived or humans are the last race alive? Who is helping Shepard to strike back? Will he manage to succeed? Questions, questions and more questions. I hope Bioware will give us some more content very soon.

Dead Space 2 Review - Strategic Dismemberment Returns!

First off, we have to admit at the outset of this review that we are HUGE fans of the original Dead Space game. The first game was so intense; I was worried that the sequel couldn't possibly be as good as the original Dead Space. On the flipside, if Dead Space 2 was as good as the first game, or *gasp* better, would I have to limit my playtime to the middle of the day with all of the lights on in the house... Not to mention needing an additional living breathing body in the room with me...

We also want you to be aware that this review may be somewhat brief... We don't believe in spoilers for those that haven't played a game yet, and Dead Space 2 is a tough one to discuss without dropping spoilers... Rest assured, your mom won't like Dead Space 2!

Dead Space 2 sees the return of Isaac Clarke after barely surviving his last encounter with the Necromorphs aboard the USG Ishamura planetracker. The game actually ended with a nice little twist, Isaac Clarke using an escape pod to get clear of the Ishamura only to have a zombified Nicole (his girlfriend who had committed suicide to avoid becoming a Necromorph) emerge from the shadows to scream in his face. The ending not only ended the game with a big "Holy Crap" moment, but leads into the sequel.

In Dead Space 2, Isaac finds himself being diagnosed with dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder, amnesia, and confined to an asylum on Titan Station, also known as "the Sprawl". Due to the current state of his psyche, he is unable to remember the previous three years, or even how he ended up on the Sprawl. Another Necromorph infestation ensues, and Isaac finds himself once again in the middle of it all. Tons of action, plot twists, and strategic dismemberment ensue.

The graphics and sound is top notch, and the team at Visceral Games made a few improvements that were VERY welcome. Among these improvements was an updated locator which allows you to not only get directions to your next objective, but also to the store, bench and save point(s). Zero-G movement has been improved as well, allowing more freedom of movement than the first game.

The key to taking out Necromorphs is "Strategic Dismemberment." Take off their limbs to slow them down, and eventually kill them, and save a TON of ammo in the process. The weapons from the first Dead Space return for the sequel, including the plasma cutter, line gun, ripper and plasma rifle. There are a few new weapons in Dead Space 2 that offer new ways of blasting through Necromorphs, including the detonator which lets you place laser-triggered trip mines, and the javelin gun which fires large spikes and impales Necromorphs to walls (or other surfaces).

The Sprawl is a MUCH larger environment than the Ishamura was, but there are still plenty of claustrophobic hallways and shafts that you must use to get through the game. The Sprawl includes hospitals, shopping areas, residential quarters and even a school. Each area includes a plethora of detail, including such things as alarm clocks on the nightstand that occasionally go off! While the environments vary, some more disturbing than others, the one thing that they all have in common is that you're never safe. As soon as you start feeling comfortable in an area, a Necromorph comes along to ruin your sightseeing.

There are several new breeds of Necromorphs to watch out for as well. The "Pack", which are twisted versions of human toddlers, and they like to run at you in groups. The "Stalker", much more intelligent Necromorphs that move in packs, uses cover, and attempt to stay hidden prior to attacking at tremendous speed. You also have to keep your eyes out for the "Puker" who, as their name implies, likes to puke on you from midrange.

For the most part, the game is absolutely perfect, but there is a bit in the middle that gets a little redundant. Is Isaac Clarke really THAT unlucky of a guy that every plan for escape requires him to fix something? It makes one wonder where all of the other engineers have been for the last three years because they obviously weren't keeping the Sprawl up to code...

The game includes 15 chapters and clocks in at around 10-12 hours. We took a little longer, but we're sluts for saving games... Saving every time we pass a save station (literally).

Make sure and stick around after the credits. There's some interesting dialogue that you won't want to miss!

There's plenty of replayability as completing the game unlocks new suits and new game modes. You can even start a new game using the equipment you had when you completed the game, which is a VERY nice touch.

Dead Space 2 also includes a new multiplayer mode. You're divided into two four man teams, one for humans/Sprawl Security and the other for Necromorphs. The human team attempts to complete various missions/objectives within an allotted time. The Necromorphs job is to stop the security team. The Sprawl Security force plays exactly as Isaac Clarke, while the opposing team has four different Necromorphs at their disposal: the pack, the lurker, the puker, and the spitter. Experience points are earned through online play and allow you to unlock new weapons, stasis power for humans, and stronger attacks for Necromorphs. It's a frantic fight for survival that definitely encourages team work.

As oil prices skyrocket, oil is not as available as it once was, and as the US works on a formidable new weapon, they threaten to shake the balance of power in their favor, thereby upsetting the other governments. Thus, the European nations combine to create the European Federation in response to all of the growing conflicts happening outside of their control, and they withdraw from NATO, too, all these factors assuring that war is very close on the horizon.

One of the aspects of the game is you get to choose which side you play on. You can take the story line and tensions into account and then decide if you want to be on the European Enforcer Corp, a group that masters in electronic warfare and energy weapons as well as having the sleekest and fastest battlefield vehicles. This group is mostly made up of counter terrorist forces as well as forces intended to keep peace throughout Europe. The United States Joint Strike Force is a group that specializes in ground and air combat as well as wonderful firepower and the ability to immediately deploy anywhere, anytime. Having the best weapons, this group is a formidable one to either join or fight against.

And finally, you can be part of the Russian Spetsnaz Guard Brigades, one of the deadliest groups who use heavy machinery and armor and are able to change up weapons to suit their particular needs for the moment. Thus, with this group you will get to experience weapons that have been modified in amazing ways that might stretch some of the borders of reality.

With this game, you can have war without using controls, and simply using your voice command. With this futuristic style, you will be sure to have an amazing experience that takes reality and imagines it with a whole new spin.

Angry Birds Rio Review

The birds are back! After the original and seasons, developer Rovio has now released the sequel called Rio. It's available right now in the app store and I checked it out.

What's new?

Upon booting it becomes clear that this is a completely new game in the series. The basic mechanic remains the same but everything else has changed. Including new menus, levels and opponents among other things. Angry Birds now also has a story, but (luckily!) it doesn't go very deep. Basically the birds were happy and living life when one day they were captured and transported to Rio in Brazil. You must help them escape by completing curtain challenges. The first levels are all about helping fellow birds escape by their cages. Once accomplished (30 levels) the game tells you that you managed to escaped and are now flying in the forest of Brazil, where you'll stumble upon evil monkeys (yay!).

Gameplay

As I said before the basic gameplay mechanic remains unchanged. Largely the same birds are at your disposal and are introduced to the player once more. I like to give them nicknames, like the red one I call "mr average" because they can't do much. And I think the yellow birds are Italian because they're passionate and fast. Anyway the new levels are fun but also rather easy. I'm an addict angry bird player and blasted through the levels in 2 hours tops.

Angry Birds Rio currently offers 60 levels in over 2 "scenes", with 4 more scenes promised over the year. They are currently not available though, which annoys me a lot. Basically the developers said: yeah we aren't done yet but you can buy it now and upgrade later. I hope this beta testing attitude doesn't become the trend in mobile gaming. Buyers now have to wait till May to access the 3rd world, that's two months from now! And the final level actually won't be open till November.

Presentation

The new storyboard style is fun and adds some depth to the game. Now it actually makes sense to be in a forest and hitting random monkeys. (yeah...)

Also improved are the visuals. The backgrounds seem more dynamic and sharper looking. Paired with the fantastic new animations, Angry Birds Rio is a real looker in mobile gaming.

Conclusion

Angry Birds Rio is a great game. This isn't a big overhaul but it doesn't need to be. Rovio has delivered exactly what Angry Bird players were looking for: more content. It's just a shame that they're offering 1/3 of the game now and the rest over a period of 8 (!) months, some patience is advised. Still highly recommended.

There are many sites that have been set up, where you can enter structured competitions, where FIFA 10 leagues run very well, and some of these even offer prizes. Others have been created by players like yourself and have created a few strong communities. What you will need to do is sign up to one of these sites, and sync your console user name with the account.

After matches are scheduled, you can add the teams you will be playing to your friends list in the game, and arrange a time when both of you are online before the set match date deadline. If your opponent (or you) does not make the scheduled game by that deadline, the match will be forfeited, and the points given to the team who was there.

Many of the sites have a direct connection to the game servers so all results are recorded automatically. Otherwise the scores are updated a little later on the website. There are rules to keep teams playing opponents at their level and to stop those who try to cheat the system.
