For over a decade subMedia.tv has been bringing anarchy to the screen. We have produced hundreds of videos that have been watched by millions around the world, and we have done this independently, which helps explain why we curse so fuckin much and feature so much riot porn. We provided raucous on the ground coverage of the RNC and DNC rebellions in 2008, The Anti-Olympic riots in Vancouver, the G20 insurrection in Toronto and the Mi’kmaq uprising in Elsipogtog. Plus a feature length documentary, video reports, short films, mash-ups blah blah muthafuckin blah… You get the idea.

We’ve assembled what we consider to be our best work in a DVD entitled “subMedia.tv: A Decade of subverision” and we’re throwing a fuckin party in Montréal to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Plus we will premiere our newest collaboration with CrimethInc – “To Change Everything” and ambitious video / print project to introduce anarchy to a wide audience, that will be released in 13 languages.

At least 1,500 people took to the streets in Oakland after the grand jury decision in Missouri on Monday not to indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. Protesters blocked freeway I-580 at multiple locations, broke the windows of banks, set small fires, threw bottles at police, and looted a chain grocery store near the Oakland police station.

Also, Wal-Mart employees in Los Angeles staged their first-ever sit-down strike against the mammoth retail giant.

And all over Turtles Island, a massive fight-back against sexual violence and rape culture has blown up over social media.

Which side are you on?

Demonstrators gathered on November 17, 2014 in Clayton, MO--a suburb of St. Louis that happens to be the seat of economic and political power for the city. It is in Clayton that real systemic and institutional action could challenge white supremacy and end racism. Clayton is where St. Louis County Police Department Chief Jon Belmar works, prosecutor Bob McCulloch works over the grand jury, and is the home to many wealthy donors with an interest in maintaining the status quo.

The Injustice Freak Show had many components: a big baby, wonderful banners of Governor Jay Nixon and officer Darren Wilson, balloons, a wailing woman, scared white people, black youth demanding systemic change, plenty of police, and people to boot. The group of maybe a few hundred worked to shut parts of Clayton down with success.

The action, organized by many different groups, happened on the 101st day since the murder of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.

Tribe X organized a die-in on November 16, 2014 at the Delmar Loop in St. Louis to commemorate this inauspicious occasion. This was a pre-emptive action before the Missouri was placed in a state of emergency by Governor Jay Nixon and news of the indictment or non-indictment came down.

For the past four years we have visiting the Unist’ot’en camp and since then, we just can’t shut up about them. Why? Because their form of protest is beyond words and it’s manifested in direct action. They have created a real physical wall of opposition to all the proposed pipelines that could bring oil from the tar sands and fracked gas to world market in the Pacific ocean. We introduced them to the world with our “Oil Gateway” video back in 2011, and then with “The Action Camp” in 2012. We are now pleased to share with you our third mini-doc about them “Chokepoint: How to Stop a Pipeline” which we made for Al Jazeera’s AJ+.

I have been developing a way to help local people in 3rd world countries communicate their present situation through positive web-series for many years.

I am currently working on a project in Sri Lanka. I am making a fun, interesting, web series to show a side of the country that tourists wouldn't usually get a chance to see — hopefully inspiring visitors to have an open heart towards local people. At the same time I am a volunteer teacher in schools and orphanages. I also give travel advice and information.

Through this web-series I hope to develop a greater understanding and empathy between people from different cultures and transcend common contemporary problems by giving the local people a chance to tell us about their point of view in an objective manner.

Political struggles over the future of Turkey have left the country profoundly divided. Former prime minister, now president, Tayyip Erdogan, has fueled the growing polarization through his authoritarian response to protests, his large-scale urban development projects, his religious social conservatism, and most recently, through his complicity in the Islamic State's war against the Kurdish people in Northern Syria. In the year after the Gezi uprising, protests continue against the government's urban redevelopment plans, against police repression, in response to repression of the Kurdish and Alevi populations, and in honor of the martyrs that lost their lives as a result of the uprising. Most recently angry protests and riots have spread across the country in solidarity with the Kurdish people's protection units fighting against the Islamic State in Kobane, Rojava. This film chronicles a year of uprisings, resistance and repression since the Gezi uprising in Turkey.

Interviews are both from TREX participants and local Klamath and Salmon River residents. This was a very important and healing event for our communities, multiple burns were implemented in areas with great cultural significance to Karuk and Yurok people.

Greg Palast on Improving Alternative Media

This video features Greg Palast speaking on a panel of alternative media dignataries about what we can do to reach a wider audience and be more effective as journalists working outside of the mainstream distribution outlets. The short answer: "don't be so fucking dull". This was filmed at The Boston Social Forum, a counter convention of sorts that took place in the days leading up to the Democratic National Convention in 2004.

The video was meant as a prequel to my convention coverage and was filmed and upload the day before the convention started. I met a great journalist this day and together we scouted the 1st ever instance of a designated caged area called a Protest Pen, a Freedom Cage, etc etc. No, it wasn't Greg Palast.

Mark Baard became a trusted ally in the years to come but at the end of the DNC when he made the generous offer of a police scanner to help me cover the anarchist march from Boston to NYC for the RNC. I knew he was a cop. Just like the anarchists I had grown found of, by working closely with the Democratic Party, knew i was a cop. It was a period of much paranoia. I was certain that the scanner was either a recording device or that the possession of it alone would be enough to get me arrested. So I had to politely decline the scanner. These days you can get all that online. Hell, they even have an app for that.

But back then as a politically charged anarcho curious video journalist living in and editing video in a van on the side of the road full time with no training and very few friends in the protest scene, I was very cautious of taking candy from stangers.
