NEW DELHI: MAXX Mobiles yesterday launched a dual-SIM touchscreen phone MAXX MAESTRO (MT255). The phone has 2-inch touchscreen and the device is powered by 1000 mAh battery. The phone sports 2 megapixel dual cameras with flash.

The device is WAP and GPRS enabled and has connectivity options like Bluetooth, MySynch (PC suite) and USB Mass storage. The phone memory is expandable upto 4GB. The phone also has an in-built audio player that supports all major file formats.

If you need to take your dose of Firefox on the go, know that you can do so on tablets too, since the special slate version of the browser for Android is now available. Mozilla’s latest effort is in fact Firefox 9, ideal for the tablet experience, at least for the Honeycomb one.

For one thing, everything is snappier and the main difference between Firefox and the standard Android browser is the tab management. The tabs are shown in a vertical menu on the left side of the main content area. The Awesome Screen integrates Firefox Sync and allows for easier access of the browsing history, the open tabs and bookmarks you have saved on your desktop and mobile devices. Aakash Tablet Goes On Sale For Rs 2500 Online

DataWind, the Canadian company is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.

Students' version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.

To book and prebook student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit DataWind's website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, "You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details."

In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, "The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible."

As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.

Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, "Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet."

This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

It looks like the company was in a hurry to start the online booking process and has not done not proper homework before staring it.

Sony launches 2 Android tablets in India

Today, Sony has launched two Android tablets for the Indian market, Tablet S and Tablet P.

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

The Lumia 800 is available in three colours – Black, Fuschia and Cyan. While the Black unit looks a lot more professional, the Fushcia and Cyan units are younger and more playful. The body is encased in a polycarbonate shell, which is durable and not prone to scratches, unlike its metallic counterparts. The 3.7-inch glass display has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass which makes it scratch-resistant, and Nokia has sucked all the air out between the display and the body, so there's no gap between the screen and the side – it looks like one big, smooth unit. If you observe the phone from the sides, you'll see that the glass curves towards the edges, and adds softness to the four sharp corners.

The volume rocker switch and power button are on the side, as is a dedicated camera button which turns on the camera with a single press. The bottom has a speaker grille which also encases the microphone. There's some fancy engineering on the top panel which houses the micro SIM and mini USB port. The USB port opens with a sort of lever mechanism which requires you to press down on one side of the panel to snap open the flap. Next to that is the SIM card slot, which you have to push sideways for it to pop open – but you can only do this when the USB slot is open. It's fancy, but a bit too much effort for my liking. It's also quite flimsy - when I accidentally dropped the phone the SIM card slot popped open. There's no micro SD card slot for storage expansion – you have to make do with the 16GB of internal storage you get.

Display and interface

I really fell in love with the Lumia when I looked at the screen. The 480x800 pixel AMOLED display is stunning, and really brings Mango's colourful interface to life. Mango looks best with the dark theme, and the black background is really ‘black' – Nokia calls this Clear Black – and I could tell the difference. The live tiles literally jump out at you, and unlike other Windows phones, they look like they're almost touching the surface.

Microsoft doesn't allow any customisation for its Windows mobile operating system, but there are a few touches which are distinctly Nokia. One of the first apps I used on the phone was Contacts Transfer, which imported all my contacts from another phone over Bluetooth. It's simple, but really convenient. Another Nokia-specific app is Nokia Drive, a turn-by-turn voice navigation system. Unlike Nokia Maps which uses your data plan to update the maps as you go, (which you also get) with Nokia Drive, you first download a map of the area you're going to be driving around. Once that's done you can simply input your final destination, and you'll get a voice guided navigation system that could beat some of the better car sat-navs out there. Maps are displayed in 2D and 3D and are accurate and easy to use. Another addition is Tune-in Radio, a great little app that utilises your Wi-Fi or data connection to stream live content from a bunch of global radio stations. The app is neatly divided into categories and sub-categories, and the audio quality is pretty clear too. Mix Radio, another popular radio service will be available on Lumia smartphones in India in the next couple of months, Nokia said.

Lovers of the N8 might be pacified by the f 2.2, 8-meg camera with Carl Zeiss optics which can record videos in HD, but it does come as a bit of a surprise that there's no front-facing camera on the phone. Microsoft was recently in the news for adopting Tango, the Voip service for video calls, and sadly Lumia users won't be able to avail of this feature. Future updates won't be able to help the problem, but I am hoping they will fix a couple of other issues. The first is that the Lumia has no notification light, so you have to keep checking your phone for alerts. The second is that there's no NFC, something that Nokia's currently making a big deal about with its Symbian Belle devices.

Performance

Unlike some of its hardcore Android buddies, the Lumia's processor is relatively subdued – you get a 1.4 Ghz Qualcomm MSM 8255 single-core processor and just 512MB of RAM. The good news is that these tech specs seem to do just fine for Windows Mango. The phone rarely froze or slowed down, there were one or two instances when it got stuck for so long that I had to reboot.

The capacitive screen was smooth to the touch, and supports pinch to zoom and double tap, working just fine for the browser and photos. Though users get the more powerful Internet Explorer browsing experience, I actually prefer browsing on Opera Mini , which displays mobile versions of sites in a much better format. The one thing users can be thankful for is the beautiful keyboard – a world of a difference from the clunky Symbian keyboards Nokia users have had to bear with. The keys are well spaced out and typing is fairly accurate.

The 1450 mAH battery gave me average results by smartphone standards – I got just about a day of use, but on most days I had to charge my phone by late-evening. Of course, this was with heavy data usage, a few hours of calls and apps in the background.

Call quality was a mixed bag, because callers at the other end frequently reported that my voice was echoing. I also sometimes noticed that call volume was a bit too low for my liking, but later figured out that the phone has to be angled correctly to avoid both of the above issues.

Our verdict

The Lumia 800 isn't perfect, but its one of the best products that Nokia has released in the market in recent months. I have no complaints about the hardware - Nokia gets it right every time. Windows Mango is a refreshing and vibrant operating system that's already got a big fan list, and the Lumia 800 is just the first of a spate of Mango smartphones Nokia is going to be working on. Until the others arrive, this will do just fine.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics launched a new version of its Galaxy Tab in its home market Wednesday in a bid to lure consumers away from Apple's iPad.
Samsung, the world's second-largest mobile phone maker.It launched an updated version of its Galaxy S smartphone in the US market in August, which is dominated by Apple's iPhone.
The company has already released its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in five overseas countries including the United States.

The tab, powered by Android's Honeycomb 3.1 developed for tablet PCs, features a 10.1-inch (25.6 cm) touchscreen display rather than the seven-inch display for the previous model.It is the world's thinnest tablet, measuring 8.6 millimetres, Samsung said. The price will start at 671,000 won ($634) in the home market.

Samsung said the seven-inch tab was optimised for portability, while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was best suited for multimedia consumption and web browsing.

"It is very thin... and weighs just as much as a cup of takeout coffee," the company said in a statement.

The patent tussle between Samsung and Apple began in April when Apple filed a suit accusing South Korean firm of copying its smartphones and tablet computers. Samsung responded with a claim in Seoul alleging five patent infringements by Apple.

The California-based firm last month lodged a second lawsuit against Samsung with a district court in Seoul, asking for a sales ban on Samsung's latest products.

The US company escalated the row this month by asking the US International Trade Commission to block imports to the United States of some of the Samsung's smartphones and tablet computers.

First up, note down your phones firmware version/release (Find by pressing *#0000# at standby, in the form of x.xxx.xx), product code (On the sticker under battery in the form of 0XXXXXX) and type (Look at the sticker under the battery in the form of RM-xxx).

Go to “C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products” and create a new folder in the last folder (“Products”) of the above path and name it RM-xxx (which is your phone type code that you noted earlier, replace “xxx” with your phones actual code numbers, for example it will be RM-596 for N8). Now paste the downloaded files (copied in the Step 7 above) to the newly created folder “C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-596″ (For Nokia N8 in this case). Phoenix will look for the files in the above folder when flashing the phone (Nokia N8 in this case)

9. Launch “Phoenix” in PC and connect your mobile (Nokia N8 in this case) via Data/USB cable (Select PC Suite mode). In Phoenix, Go to “File/Scan Product”, Phoenix will detect the phone. Now select “Flashing/Firmware Update”

10. At the firmware update window, Phoenix will automatically look up and find the official firmware files earlier downloaded via Navifirm. However if it doesn’t find the files

a. Check that the directory “C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-596” exists, (create if it does not and place the firmware files into it.

b. Check that the above path is present in all the three boxes in Tools/Options/Product Location (In Phoenix), set it if it does not and repeat steps 9 onwards.
If everything upto step 10 goes successful, select “Refurbish”, wait until the “Successful” dialog box appear (DO NOT touch or disconnect the phone or USB cable during the process). Press OK, phone will disconnect and restart.
