During the last decade we have seen an increased flow of innovation around the mobile phone, which is becoming an indispensable gadget in nearly everyone’s life. Mobile devices outnumber desktop and laptop computers three to one worldwide and they are already the most popular access platform to the Internet. The convergence of mobile phone and web services is just the beginning of what may be regarded as true “ubiquitous computing”. The paradigm of anytime, anywhere, anyhow has become a reality in everyday life in a very short time.

But what’s next? Besides the current rat-race of getting the best contextual mobile services on the market, in the labs, smart people are already working on the next big things in mobile… Mobile Mixed Reality, Sensing Technologies, Nanoscience coming to the mobile device, the next 10 years might be even more innovative then we have know so far. For this session, we asked some these people how they innovate with their company in this very competitive landscape. What are the processes? Which criteria they use to make the difference?

In an open and relaxed atmosphere, Mobile Monday Barcelona in partnership with Forum Nokia and BCD (Barcelona Design Center) is inviting you to join us and share insights and different views on how companies continue to innovate in mobile.

Designing Mobile Experiences

Thursday October 29, 2009 in the Auditorium at the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (MACBA)

Understanding the user context (who? what? where? when? how?) has become the major challenge for designers of all industries, also in order to create mobile services that are relevant in people’s everyday life.

With improved capabilities of devices including sensoring technology, we’re moving towards networked and context-aware environments, embedding computational power into the objects and environments that surround us (also known as “urban computing” and “locative media”). Visual browsing is possible today with augmented reality solutions changing the way we interact with what’s around. This increasing influence and permeation of the digital layer is launching a new wave of service ideas in industries such as media, consumer goods, retail, automotive, healthcare, etc.

Understanding how the mobile ecosystems work and in particular the correlation between design and mobile and between innovation and technology becomes increasingly important for any designer working in any industry.

For this first Mobile Design Session, we’re inviting some of the most forward-thinking leaders in Mobile who will share the challenges they see for the coming years: designing mobile services for a total mobile user experience, understanding the needs of the user within her environment.

The “permanent” collection constantly changes, as the museum is rotating the pieces of exhibition from its fund. We can find works of international artists as Alexander Calder and Paul Klee, up to Catalans or Spanish like Antoni Tàpies, Miquel Barceló and Susana Solano.

In parallel to its calendar of temporary exhibitions, the MACBA develops a wide program of activities centred on the discussion of the art role and the responsibility of the artist in the contemporary world with constant seminars, cinema programmes, exhibitions and concerts.

The event will be held on April 20 in the Sony Room of Barcelona Activa.

Mobile widgets are mini applications that sit on a handset and can be personalised to retrieve relevant information from the web. They provide ‘always on’ services based on the information users want to receive, and are a new touch point for how consumers use the mobile internet. Widgets are based on web code rather than on specialist programming language, which makes it possible for both professional and amateur developers to tap into their potential.

We invited some of the most active and knowledgeable experts working in the Mobile Widgets area including Paco Marín Garcia, Vodafone; Jure Sustersic, Forum Nokia; Marc Rougier, Goojet and Ricardo Varela, Yahoo! Mobile.

During this event, we want to offer YOU, the widget developers, the opportunity to demo your widgets in partnership with the Betavine Mobile Widget Competition. In order to present your widget at the event, just show up between 18H30 and 19H the day of the event and we’ll get you on stage.

As you may know Betavine, a Vodafone Group R&D lab, is offering mobile developers a chance to win £20,000 in a new mobile widget competition. The Betavine Widget Competition is designed to encourage developers to unleash their creativity and experiment with the technology, competing with their peers for a first prize of £20,000 – check the website for competition details and how to participate. All developers submitting widgets will also have an opportunity to make their entries available through the Vodafone Widget Manager Beta application, which is currently being rolled out across a range of 10 popular S60 handsets in Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain and the UK.
