Android Malware Text Messages Premium Rate Numbers

Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have discovered the first Android Malware which sends text messages to premium rate numbers.

But, before you get all excited, there are a few stipulations to how this malware is received. The app masks itself as a media player and is NOT found in the app store. The only way a person is to get the malware is to install the untrusted app from a website.

On top of that, the user is told which permissions this media player has before the install. The app is granted permission to send text messages upon install.

Symantec is gearing up to release their Norton Smartphone Security for Android. We all knew it was coming. The software comes with the following features:

------------------------------

Prevents strangers from using your mobile device in case of loss or theft

- Remotely locks your mobile device if it’s stolen so thieves can’t use it and run up your bill
- Instantly locks your mobile device if its SIM card is removed, so it can’t be used with another SIM card

Protects your privacy and the personal information on your mobile device

Samsung S8500 Wave Ships with Virus

If you suspected your new phone would definitely be virus free, think again. The Samsung S8500 Wave ships with a virus on the MicroSD card. Utilizing the famous Autorun.ini trick, when the card is inserted into a Windows PC it will automatically infect the machine.

The infection will then continue to spread via any USB drive or memory stick used in that computer. Now is a good reminder to be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus on your Windows PC.

Windows Mobile malware found in apps

If you are using Windows Mobile, be sure you trust the company producing your favorite apps. It appears scammers are distributing apps with malware included. These apps to watch out for are: 3D Anti-Terrorist game, PDA Poker Art, and Codec pack for Windows Mobile 1.0.

The malware is using an autodialer to run up the unsuspected user's phone bill. Fun times!

Results Of Mobile Phone Virus Website Poll

The results of the poll were rather interesting.

"Have you experienced any type of mobile phone virus?"

There were a total of 133 votes.

- YES, 24% (32 votes)
- NO, 62% (82 votes)
- NOT SURE, 14% (19 votes)

While the results did not cover a massive amount of users, I feel it received a decent amount of results for all to take a look at. The surge in votes came from the AFP article which mentioned this site.

Computer and Mobile Collide

With the daily advancements in the mobile arena, it's only a matter of time until the same issues which plaque the computer world begin to grab hold of popular mobile devices.

The mobile devices are gaining features which allow their users to perform more advanced functions without being tethered to their desktop or laptop computers.

Not only are the issues of viruses foreseen, but other common issues as MMS (text message) spam may be on the horizon.
