Results Of Mobile Phone Virus Website Poll

The results of the poll were rather interesting.

"Have you experienced any type of mobile phone virus?"

There were a total of 133 votes.

- YES, 24% (32 votes)
- NO, 62% (82 votes)
- NOT SURE, 14% (19 votes)

While the results did not cover a massive amount of users, I feel it received a decent amount of results for all to take a look at. The surge in votes came from the AFP article which mentioned this site.

Computer and Mobile Collide

With the daily advancements in the mobile arena, it's only a matter of time until the same issues which plaque the computer world begin to grab hold of popular mobile devices.

The mobile devices are gaining features which allow their users to perform more advanced functions without being tethered to their desktop or laptop computers.

Not only are the issues of viruses foreseen, but other common issues as MMS (text message) spam may be on the horizon.

Cabir on Symbian Series 60

This was the first mobile phone virus detected. Cabir infects mobile phones that are left in "discoverable" mode. If the user clicks yes, the Cabir worm will activate and show a dialog that contains the virus name, the author's initials and the group initial.

Duts on Windows CE for Pocket PCs

The only sign of infection is a window that asks a user if the code is allowed to spread. DUTS code often includes a message derived from the science fiction book Permutation City by Greg Egad that reads, "This code arose from the dust of Permutation City."

Brador on Windows CE for Pocket PCs

When Brador has installed itself into the system, it will read the local host IP address and e-mail that to the virus author. After e-mailing the IP address, the backdoor opens a TCP port and starts listening for commands from it. The backdoor is capable of uploading and downloading files from PDAs, executing arbitrary commands and displaying messages to the PDA user.

Qdial on Symbian Series 60

Qdial sends an SMS message to specific premium rate numbers and can charge affected users for the sent messages. Apparently, the affected numbers are from the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland regions only.
