The team at MobiForms are proud to announce the release of MobiForms 4.0. MobiForms version 4.0 has been certified with the open-source HSQLDB database. MobiForms includes a free copy of HSQLDB for server, standalone or mobile database applications, complementing the MobiForms Developer tool and the Mobiforms runtime interpreter. MobiForms offers all the tools in one box for the creation and deployment of any type of mobile application – from surveys to field service, from signature capture to bar coding.

New features include timers, SMTP email and commands that dynamically change object attributes at runtime like font colours and sizes. The Deployment Wizard has been extended to include more device and operating environment combinations, and a tab for database deployment.

According to the project manager from a UK based CCTV installer “We were attracted to MobiForms because it offered us the ability to quickly create one version of the same application that would run on multiple types of PDA with no limits of the number of users – all included in a one off developer licence.”

MobiForms is a rapid application development tool for building mobile applications for just about any wireless platform including Tablet PC, Pocket PC, Windows CE, Windows Mobile, Smartphone, Symbian and Palm. MobiForms is aimed at novice or expert users alike who do not want to spend hours writing complex code like Java or C++. Instead professional mobile applications can be created and deployed in minutes using the intuitive MobiForms drag and drop interface, with the data tied seamlessly back to corporate systems.

MobiForms can be downloaded from the MobiForms web site at http://www.mobiforms.com.

Motorola, Inc. today announced that it has deployed a wind and solar power system to operate MTC Namibia’s GSM cell site at Dordabis village in the Khomas region of Namibia. The trial with MTC Namibia supports the African operator’s strategy for increased voice and data service coverage in rural areas of Namibia and is the first of its kind globally.

“With the implementation of cell sites into more remote areas this Motorola solution provides us with an efficient and reliable alternative to the often costly roll-out of mains grid electricity. This is an important project for us and commencement of the wind and solar cell site trial is proof of our commitment to our customers to provide the essential communication services needed in the region,” said Albertus Aochamub, corporate services general manager, MTC Namibia.

By incorporating renewable energy solutions into communication networks Motorola is trialling this solution as a feasible option for operators instead of utilising costly fuel generators or waiting long periods for a mains grid connection. The Dordabis cell site will remain a part of MTC Namibia’s live GSM network throughout the trial.

Motorola has been working with the GSM Association on this project which was announced at 3GSM Barcelona in February this year. “A key challenge in much of Africa is connecting people in off-grid locations and this project seeks to highlight to operators that wind and solar power is a real and cost effective alternative. We expect this pilot to become a showcase for the industry and to see replication of the model thereafter,” said Dawn Hartley, Development Fund manager at the GSMA.

With its expanded rural and roadside network coverage MTC Namibia is providing voice and GPRS/EDGE data services to enable new communities to access communication and the internet at a level not possible before. Recently, MTC Namibia has also launched a Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) service on its GPRS network. Initially being utilized as a communication aid to deliver services within local communities, it will be expanded to serve diverse subscriber groups and businesses in the future.

“We are excited to be working with MTC Namibia on this solar and wind power powered cell site. Though this particular trial is being delivered on a GSM network, the Motorola solution has the capability to be applied to other wireless networks that have rural cell site power issues,” said Ali Amer, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.

Once installed, the cost of power is almost zero, and wind and solar powered cell sites require minimal maintenance unlike a diesel driven generator which generally requires, at a minimum, a monthly visit for refuelling. This translates into added savings in operating expenditure (OPEX), a key factor to emerging market network operators.

Motorola’s renewable energy solutions for powering wireless network cell sites are part of the company’s Reach GSM portfolio. For more information please review the Solar and Wind trial micro site at: www.motorola.com/reach/windandsolartrial

Verizon Wireless, the wireless company with the highest customer loyalty, today announced the company has come out on top in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) survey for the fourth consecutive year.

In this year’s independent survey conducted under the auspices of the University of Michigan, Verizon Wireless scored above the industry average and higher than every other measured wireless company.

“We’re pleased that we’ve been able to hold the top spot on the ACSI Index for customer satisfaction for the past four years and that the significant gains we’ve made year over year have been noted,” said Jack Plating, executive vice president and COO of Verizon Wireless. “At Verizon Wireless, our customers are our number one priority, which is why we invest heavily in our network and our products and services to ensure that we are attracting and retaining customers by providing the best wireless experience.”

Verizon Wireless is the nation’s wireless leader in customer loyalty, based on company retention and turnover rates published by the largest wireless carriers. In the first quarter of this year, Verizon Wireless posted a record-low 1.1% churn rate in Q1 – the percentage of customers who disconnect their service in a given period of time – well below the industry average. Additionally, the company has posted the lowest churn rate among the largest national wireless carriers for the past 10 consecutive quarters.

The ACSI is produced by the Stephen M. Ross Business School at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the international consulting firm, CFI Group.

The Disney-ABC Television Group and Sprint announced today that Sprint customers can now access a comprehensive portfolio of news and entertainment video programming from ABC Entertainment, ABC News and Disney Channel. The content is available in two forms: on demand and via three “linear” mobile channels, which stream continuous scheduled programming throughout the day.

The following content is now available for the first time ever on mobile:

    * On-demand, full-length episodes of ABC programs, including the hit shows “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Ugly Betty”
* A linear channel with content from Disney Channel, the top-rated kids network

Sprint is also the first carrier to provide ABC Mobile, a newly-created linear mobile channel. ABC Mobile features a variety of popular full-length and short-form news and entertainment content, including full-length episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Ugly Betty” as well as ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” “World News with Charles Gibson,” “Nightline,” “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” and other ABC News Specials. Short-form promotional content from ABC Primetime, ABC Daytime and ABC News is also featured.

Additionally, Sprint now offers:

    * On-demand full-length ABC News programs including “World News with Charles Gibson” and “Nightline,” as well as a variety of ABC News Specials
* ABC News Now, a 24/7 linear channel that provides live breaking news coverage and a wide range of original news, lifestyle and entertainment shows

Finally, Sprint will soon provide:

    * On-demand, full-length episodes of popular Disney Channel programs, including the hit live-action series “Hannah Montana,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and “Cory in the House” as well as the animated series “Kim Possible”

“We are excited to team with Sprint to build out our first-ever, multi-brand wireless offering, utilizing content throughout our Group to bring an extensive, comprehensive array of world-class programming to the mobile marketplace,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group. “We continue to be focused on finding new ways to connect viewers to the content they want and brands they love on the platforms they choose. This deal not only provides new viewing opportunities for consumers, but also gives advertisers another platform to reach viewers and associate with our powerful network brands.”

“Through our partnership with Disney-ABC Television Group, Sprint is offering yet another first in the industry and continuing our leadership not only in mobile video services but in wireless data applications as a whole. Customers can now conveniently access their favorite ABC and Disney shows no matter where they are within Sprint’s nationwide wireless broadband network,” said Oliver Valente, senior vice president, product management and development for Sprint. “Customers can watch programs at the airport while waiting for their flight, at the office during lunch and in the thousands of other scenarios where people have some down time and want a news or entertainment break. Disney Channel programming is also great to keep the kids occupied in the car and in many other locations.”

Video-on-demand shows will be available the day after their television premiere. In general, customers will be able to access the four most recently televised episodes of each series. Beginning this fall, selected entertainment and news on-demand content and linear programming will include advertising in order to provide customers with the most variety of content at the least cost to them.

The content from Disney-ABC Television Group is available via Sprint TV on Sprint’s multiple Power Vision devices. All of the content will be included in the Sprint Power Vision TV Pack, which costs an additional $20 per month. The Sprint Power Vision TV Pack also provides 20 other channels of content as well as exclusive entertainment and sports video from Sprint Power View.

Alternatively, content from Disney Channel only, including the on-demand programs and linear channel, will be available in the Power Vision Access Pack, which costs an additional $15 per month. Both Packs also include unlimited use of several other non-video applications such as web browsing, Picture Mail and mobile email (casual usage charges would apply for access to these applications without a data plan).

For more information, visit www.sprint.com/digitallounge or a Sprint retail store. Media can access images of the new content on Sprint phones at www.abcmedianet.com.

More than 29.4 million viewers tuned in to FOX on Tuesday night to watch the performances of the Top 12 AMERICAN IDOL contestants. While it’s way too early to know who will win it all, no doubt most fans already have their favorites. AT&T wireless customers can now relive their favorite AMERICAN IDOL performances over and over again with Live Idol Videos and Live Idol Tones directly from their wireless phones.

“One of the reasons AMERICAN IDOL continues to be the number one show on television is because it allows fans to be a part of the ‘Idol’ experience in a meaningful way,” said John Burbank, vice president, marketing, AT&T. “The availability of Live Idol Videos and Live Idol Tones are two unique ways, beyond voting, that allow our wireless customers to show their support for their favorite AMERICAN IDOL contestants.” Live Idol Videos

What’s the next best thing to having your favorite AMERICAN IDOL perform live in front of you? How about having a video clip of your favorite AMERICAN IDOL performing live where you can view it virtually whenever and wherever you want. Each week, until the end of the season, the Cingular Video library will feature Live Idol Videos – video clips cut directly from actual performances of the remaining contestants subject to music clearances. To watch these performance clips, each of which is approximately two minutes in length, consumers simply need to have a 3G phone, such as the Cingular SYNC from Samsung or the Samsung Blackjack, and sign up for the $19.99 MEdia MAX Bundle, which includes unlimited Cingular Video. In addition to videos of the Top 12 contestants’ performances, the Cingular Video library also features clips from this season’s outrageous auditions.

Live Idol Tones
What better way to tell the world you’ve got a favorite Idol then to let your phone say it for you? Introduced for the first time last season, Live Idol Tones are ringtones and Answer Tonesâ„¢ of the contestants’ live performances. To make it easy for customers to purchase a tone of their favorite Idol’s performance each week, AT&T allows customers to reserve songs the night they are performed for purchase the following day. Overnight, the performance songs are created as Live Idol Tone ringtones and Answer Tones. The next day the customer receives a text message on their phone to purchase and download their reserved selection subject to music clearances.

Live Idol Tones are available nationwide for $2.49 per ringtone. AT&T provides three easy ways for customers to purchase Live Idol ringtones:

  1. Text “IDOL” to 8008 for a direct link to the latest finalist Live Idol
Tones
2. Go to MEdia Mall on your AT&T phone, choose Shop Tones, and then
AMERICAN IDOL
3.  Go online to http://www.cingular.com/americanidol

The charge for each Live Idol Tone Answer Tone purchase is $1.99, in addition to a monthly service charge of $0.99. For more information on Answer Tones, visit http://www.cingularanswertones.com/ .

Evolving the Treo product line to keep mobile professionals connected, productive and entertained, Palm, Inc. introduced the Treo 755p smart device, a new Palm OS Treo for Sprint. The CDMA Treo 755p is the first Treo device to offer built-in Microsoft Direct Push Technology email support; Google Maps for mobile; and the latest Treo design, with integrated antenna, slimmer form factor and mini-SD slot. Sprint is the first carrier selling the next-generation Treo 755p, which is available for as low as $279.99 with a two-year service agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate, and is available starting mid-May in two fashionable colors – midnight blue and burgundy.

The new Treo 755p brings customers quick, wireless access to web, email, business, multimedia applications and instant messaging (IM) for Sprint customers nationwide (standard text and Vision charges apply where applicable).The Treo 755p runs on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, the nation’s largest mobile broadband network – reaching more than 206 million people across the country in more than 11,000 cities and 1,000 airports.

“The Treo 755p is a stylish and powerful device ideal for business professionals looking for the power to do more while on the go,” said Danny Bowman, vice president of customer equipment for Sprint. “Building upon the success of the Treo 700p, we’ve added enhancements such as Mobile Voice Control, a new IM application and Sprint TV in the ROM for mobile entertainment and news.”

As the newest member of the Treo family, the Treo 755p smart device combines the sleek, internal antenna hardware design of devices such as the Treo 680 and Treo 750 with Palm’s latest Palm OS software, shipped on millions of Palm OS based Treo devices worldwide. Currently, there are more than 29,000 Palm OS applications commercially available, from healthcare and sales force automation to games and travel. Palm differentiates this smart device from others in the Treo line by offering the following features along with many additional enhancements.

First Palm OS based Treo Device with Built-in Support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology for Email

The Treo 755p offers VersaMail 3.5.4 with built-in Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology that delivers automatic updates to Outlook email. Companies can choose to eliminate costly third-party software and take advantage of their existing Exchange infrastructures. Businesses connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server get fast, automatic wireless updates of email, calendar and contact information with added IT security and remote manageability.

“The new Treo 755p keeps mobile professionals in touch with coworkers and family while managing a variety of communications and information to stay productive and maximize downtime,” said Caitlin Spaan, vice president, carrier marketing, for Palm, Inc. “The fast speeds of the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network and Palm’s hallmark ease of use make viewing rich applications, streaming live music and video as well as using the web an enjoyable experience.”

First Treo Integrating Google Maps for Mobile

Also new to the Treo 755p is the integration of Google Maps service for mobile. With Google Maps built into the ROM, right out of the box, Treo 755p users can get directions; perform local searches; and view moveable/scalable maps, satellite imagery, and traffic updates while on the go.

“By integrating Google Maps for mobile into the Treo 755p, we’re making it even easier for users to get directions, maps, local listings, and traffic updates for wherever life takes them,” said Steve Lee, product manager for Google Inc. “We’re focused on delivering the best possible mobile experience to as many users as possible, and working with innovative companies like Palm helps us do just that.”

Other Treo 755p Features and Benefits

– Ability to watch mobile video directly on the Treo 755p with Sprint TV, which features more than 50 channels of live and on-demand content, including CNN, FOX, ESPN, The Weather Channel, MTV, E! and The Cartoon Network;

– Dial-up networking via USB or Bluetooth wireless technology on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network for using the Treo 755p as a modem for a laptop computer (requires an appropriate service plan);

– Superior phone functionality, including one-touch speakerphone and conference calling, the ability to ignore a call with text messaging, and the option to use the touch-screen dial pad;

– Support for EvDO (Rev.0) speeds, which makes streaming mobile content, such as live TV, movie clips and audio from radio stations, as well as training videos or company communications, enjoyable;

– 128MB memory (60MB user available) and support for Mini-SD memory cards up to 4GB;

– Voice-memo application, which can be used to create custom ring tones and add voice annotations to photos or simply record a quick memo;

– Threaded SMS/MMS messages in a single chat view and out-of-the-box support for Yahoo!, AOL, and Gmail;

– 1.3-megapixel digital camera and video recorder, and application to organize and share photos;

– Support for Sprint Picture Mail;

– Smart, fast web browsing using the award-winning Access browser;

– Full PDF support using DataViz Documents To Go Version 8.0, which also offers support for native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents;

– User-friendly and familiar Palm OS platform, including one-touch access to key applications;

– Color touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard for easier email, messaging and web use;

– On-device user’s guide, giving customers access to the full user’s guide right from the device; and

– Default data transfer mode, which allows users to be notified of incoming voice calls while using data services, rather than calls automatically going to voicemail.

Nokia has signed a strategic partnership agreement with China Postel Mobile Communication Equipment Co., Ltd. (China Postel) of China P&T Appliances – bolstering the strong existing relationship between the two companies. China Postel is expected to purchase mobile devices from Nokia to the value of approximately USD 2.5 billion in 2007. In addition, both parties have agreed to deepen strategic ties, especially with regard to network channel development, as the two companies make significant bilateral resource investments.

“I believe that our partnership will continue to bring new energy to the Chinese mobile phone market,” said Mr. David Tang, Vice President of Nokia, expressing his confidence in the agreement.

Nokia – the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer – and China Postel – China’s largest mobile phone distributor – have a long-standing partnership that continues to grow stronger over time. This new partnership agreement represents a significant milestone for both parties.

Mr. Tan Xinhui, President of China Postel, said, “Over the past few years, we have been pursuing new ways of working with operators, mobile phone manufacturers, and consumers in order to enhance our competitiveness. We hope to have a fundamental role in the development of the Chinese mobile phone market.”

As a subsidiary company of China P&T Appliances, China Postel has become a provider of mobile phones and is actively involved in China’s telecom service industry. With a comprehensive distribution network for both products and services, China Postel has been the leading distributor on the China mobile phone market for eight consecutive years, with a market share of over 30% in 2006. Since the collaboration between Nokia and China Postel began in 1998, China Postel has distributed over 37 million Nokia mobile phones across China.

Nokia today updated its device market share outlook for the second quarter 2007. Nokia now expects its share of the global device market to increase sequentially in the second quarter 2007, from its estimated 36% share at the end of the first quarter.

This is updated from the outlook Nokia provided in its first quarter 2007 earnings announcement on April 19, 2007, when the company said it expected its device market share in the second quarter 2007 to be approximately at the same level sequentially.

Nokia believes that its device shipments in the second quarter 2007 will be positively impacted, as excess device inventory in the market has sufficiently cleared. In its first quarter 2007 earnings announcement, Nokia said that it believed there had been an impact in the market from the excess inventory of certain of its competitors’ products in the first quarter. This excess inventory also temporarily impacted Nokia’s visibility into short term market developments.

Nokia continues to target an increase in its market share in mobile devices for the full year 2007.

Nokia will report its second quarter 2007 results on August 2, 2007.

Rumours of the new Google mobile phone are fast gaining credence. Google executive, Isabel Aguilera, recently dropped some rather heavy hints about a possible mobile move in an interview with Spanish language news-site Noticias. During the interview, Aguilera let it slip that Google is definitely “investigating” a mobile phone. However, she stopped short of officially confirming it.

According to most rumours, the handset is likely to have a full-colour wide-screen design and will, of course, come Internet ready. Little else is known about the proposed device, indeed it t is still far from certain that Google will even get as far as launching a mobile phone at all, although the company is said to have been putting out feelers to several potential manufacturers.

Google recently confirmed that it had plans to expand into any territory, but the search engine giant has yet to comment specifically on the rumoured handset venture. According to a spokesperson for the company “Mobile is an important area for Google. We remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce.”

Certainly, Google has already taken several important steps to position itself as a major player in the mobile market, but whether this will include actually selling its own-brand handsets, remains to be seen. The Google Maps system is even due to be integrated into Apple’s iPhone.

For its part Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, has already made its position clear. A spokesperson from the Finnish giant was quoted on the Daily Tech website as saying “It (the Google phone) will meet with limited success and lose money.” Time will tell if the Finns are right.
