<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">In talking with local businesses everyday, the controversy over Mobile Websites vs Mobile Apps is always at the forefront.  There is not one business owner that I speak to that does not bring up the fact that they have to have a Mobile App first.  The&#8221; App&#8221; word is a familiar word to them because they themselves have either an Android or iPhone smartphone of which they download app&#8217;s themselves and too it is a familiar word to them.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">But this is not the first place to start in making your business Mobile ready!  Many business of whom I speak to that had built the app first really get frustrated with the whole Mobile process because they don&#8217;t see the results they want quickly and it is costly.  I always suggest bring in the sales first through our Mobile readiness strategies and then give your clients an added experience with apps.  Mobilizing your business does take a few months to<span id="more-2564"></span> put into place effectively!  I am not talking about these quick and easy setups that companies are selling businesses on, I am talking about owning your <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>own</strong></span> Mobile virtual real estate for your business!</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The Mobile website versus Mobile app debate is a consequence of current developments in the way websites and applications are built for mobile devices. Every business eventually will have to establish a Mobile presence as the world changes to platform based marketing.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><strong>What&#8217;s the Difference Between the Two?</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Mobile websites and Mobile apps are both designed and optimized for Smartphones and tablets.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Mobile websites are just like standard websites, with the difference that they are optimized for the small touch-screen of mobile devices. Sometimes, Mobile websites also have features like mapping (geo-targetting) and click-to-call buttons which are specific to Mobile devices.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Mobile apps are applications you download onto your Mobile device from app portals such as Android Market or Apple App Store. Mobile apps can work online, offline, or both, and they are designed for a specific platform (iOS, Android) though popular apps are usually available across platforms.  The more platforms apps are available on the more money it will cost.  Usually companies will choose the top two, Android and Apple marketplaces.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><strong>Mobile Website First, Mobile App Second</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Creating a Mobile website is normally the first step companies take when developing a web presence, because setting up a Mobile website is easy and cost-effective. Once the Mobile website is in place, then a Mobile app that serves a more specific function can be developed.</span></p>

<p>For these reasons, Facebook has planned a variety of Mobile-centric products, including last week&#8217;s announcement that brands will now be able to advertise in Mmobile news feeds through Sponsored Stories.<br />
These game-changing trends mean that business owners need to get serious about Mobile in 2012.</p>
<p>Here are three new ways you can build mobile into your Facebook marketing plan.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>1. Mobilize and Optimize All Your Content</strong></p>
<p>Timeline for brands is coming to the Mobile platform in 2012. They where not considering this last year but I believe that 2012 is the year for Mobile.  When you consider that brand pages on Facebook Mobile have had almost no functionality I believe that Timeline for brands was launched specifically to enable brand&#8217;s Mobile Facebook capabilities&#8212;therefore Mobile Facebook ads.  Perhaps?</p>
<p>And since users use Timeline functions on Facebook Mobile, Timeline for brands should be equally versatile, giving brands the ability to provide engaging mobile experiences for the first time.</p>
<p>Since nearly half of Facebook users access the site through a mobile device the local business brand reach could effectively double if you Mobile optimize your social content. And because users will soon be able to experience the same workflow on their desktops as their smartphones, page managers will now be able to curate an identical experience for all users, regardless of viewing device.</p>

<p>Whether you&#8217;re building a Mobile presence for your business, make sure the applications are seamlessly viewable across all platforms and devices. Ideally, you will be able to design once and deploy anywhere. That would be nice.  But still today there have been challenges in this arena.  Sometimes I have deployed an application and the Blackberry platform doesn&#8217;t present itself well because of it&#8217;s smaller screen.  I cannot wait for all the manufactures get together so us consultants can deploy anywhere.  That way, you avoid messy synchronization issues, duplication of effort between creative teams, and working around multiple content channels.</p>
<p>All the new platform framework for Mobile employs specific HTML5, CSS and Javascript technologies to ensure that the same content displays well on devices of any screen size. (I think this is where Blackberry has failed a wee bit.) In the context of Facebook mobile pages, apps built within this framework can morph Facebook page tabs&#8217; for mobile, tablets and desktops&#8217; with one build.</p>
<p><strong>2. Blend Sponsored Stories Into Your Marketing Plan</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mobilemastery2millions.com"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2416" title="Mobile Mastery 2 Millions" src="http://www.cheryllynninternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/My-eBook.png" alt="Mobile Mastery 2 Millions" width="243" height="139" /></a>To date, there has been no way to advertise to Facebook users on Mobile devices. This has been an enormous lost opportunity for local business owners up until now.</p>
<p><a href="http://mashable.com/2011/01/25/facebook-sponsored-stories/"><img class="alignright  wp-image-2415" title="Sponsored Story" src="http://www.cheryllynninternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Sponsored-Story-300x205.png" alt="" width="300" height="205" /></a>Now, <strong><span style="color: #3366ff;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/business/sponsoredstories/"><span style="color: #3366ff;">Sponsored Stories</span></a></span></strong> premium ad units will not only appear in users&#8217; news feeds (a huge announcement on its own), but also in mobile news feeds. Considering the many users who access Facebook from a mobile device, marketers now have a big opportunity to embed sponsored advertisements within mobile feeds. The challenge is how to make this work with your existing Facebook marketing program.</p>
<p>The most effective way to integrate Sponsored Stories into your marketing is to work them into an editorial calendar. Since Sponsored Stories stem from the activities of users on a business  brand  Page, create a calendar of activities that translate well to the Sponsored Story format. For example, a local retail store could plan its weekly status updates, featuring in-store specials and colorful coupons as Sponsored Stories. Just make sure to use eye-catching images to help your promoted posts attract attention.<span style="color: #ff0000;"><span id="more-2413"></span></span></p>
<p><strong>3. Use Facebook Mobile to Fuel Offline Campaigns</strong></p>
<p>I often preach &#8220;Drive Local Foot Traffic To Your Front Door&#8221; but it is true.  Consumers are waiting for you to send them a discount, coupon, etc.  They think it is cool and sexy.  Mobile engagement has an open rate of 97% that is amost 3x the open rate on an email.</p>
<p>Mobile-optimized social campaign marketing can also be used to enhance consumers&#8217; in-store experiences. In fact, according to comScore, 36% of the U.S. smartphone population used their phones to perform retail research while inside a store in 2011. And Nielsen states that, by the end of 2011, nearly one in five smartphone users scanned product barcodes, and nearly one in eight compared prices while in a store.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.cheryllynninternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Sprinkles-Cupcakes.png"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2417" title="Sprinkles Cupcakes" src="http://www.cheryllynninternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Sprinkles-Cupcakes-249x300.png" alt="" width="249" height="300" /></a>There is a lot of room for creating social campaigns with seamless Mobile components, such as unique codes for scanning, in addition to more traditional social campaign approaches like promotions and exclusive content.</p>
<p>When planning online and offline campaigns, include in-store signage. This is crucial to the success of a Mobile campaign, and is a key driver of participation. Many brands will advertise promotions on their Pages, designed to drive activity in-store, but do not replicate this messaging in the store. Unfortunately, this misses the in-store consumers who haven&#8217;t interacted on your FanPage beforehand. Capture their interest socially first, then reinforce your message in-store to create a deeper, longer-term connection with the consumer.</p>
<p>The next thing to keep in mind is simplicity, which is the key to a successful social-to-in-store campaign. That multi-step scavenger hunt, which extends from your FanPage all the way into the shelves of your store may sound like a creative idea, but it will most certainly narrow engagement. Keep the proposition simple so users can easily get involved.</p>
<p>For example, Sprinkles Cupcakes consistently posts messages to its FanPage, encouraging fans to check in daily for a &#8220;Secret Word&#8221;.   Fans who discover the secret word on Sprinkle&#8217;s Facebook Timeline can whisper it, in-store, to get a free cupcake. Sprinkle&#8217;s approach yields continuous check-ins on its FanPage, where other marketing messages appear alongside the secret word.</p>
<p>Whether you are a local or on-line business, no one can ignore the staggering growth of users who access the Internet and social networks via mobile. Get Mobile right and you&#8217;ve effectively doubled your social network reach. Start by Mobile-optimizing your content, testing Mobile Sponsored Stories, and linking Mobile to your in-store campaigns.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Consumers are shopping your competition while in your store these days.  You know it is human to think and we all do it, &#8220;Well it is a big name brand business?  They can compete better?&#8221;  Well what happens when it is a small local business?  This can have a significant impact to sales. If this doesn&#8217;t show the need for every business to be mobile friendly and not sure what will.  It amazes me when I work with businesses how many sites are not Mobilized and not giving their customers an awesome Mobile experience.   Even this was a wee bit of a shocker to me.  A  study by <span style="color: #3366ff;"><a href="http://www.foresee.com"><span style="color: #3366ff;">Foresee</span></a></span>, 65% reported that they visit the retail stores website while they were shopping in the store during the month of January but a whopping 43% say they have accessed a competitor&#8217;s website while shopping in a store.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">What impact does your website and Mobile site have on your customers? How do you know if they are getting the right impression, or if their experience detracts from how they view your company or brand?</p>
<p>The mobile channel is rapidly expanding and more users are connecting to it than ever before. It is critically important for companies to make sure the experience is right to foster a positive outcome.</p>

<p>Short Tip &#8211; Changing To a Custom Tab Image/Name vs a listing of App Names will be a wee be confusing at first but like anything we will get used of it.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>      Changing the &#8220;Tab&#8221; Icon</strong></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Facebook App/Nav tab size: 110 x 74 pixels (although I used 328&#215;240)</p>
<p>Facebook cover photo size: 851 x 315 pixels</p>
<p>Facebook profile image size: 180 x 180 pixels square</p>
<p>Facebook milestone image size: 843 x 403 pixels</p>

<ul>
<li>Go to your Timeline page view, underneath the banner there is the four &#8220;positions&#8221; for the Photos + 3 Top Application / Nav Pictures&#8230; To its right there is a number (tabs/apps you have) and a small down arrow.</li>
<li>Click the down arrow and all of your apps tabs will slide down.</li>
<li>Go to the App Picture you want altered and hover your mouse on the top right corner.</li>
<li>Left-Click the little pencil icon and a dialog box will pop up.</li>
<li>Scroll down your list to a few from the bottom and click the Edit Settings link.</li>
<li>Click the Custom Tab Image Change link. A new window will pop open with Upload a Custom Image in it &#8211; Check the change Link.</li>
<li>Click the Browse button and find your image file you want to add on your Computer. 111&#215;74 is the std but it will be converted and resized. Max limit is 5MB.</li>
<li>Once the image has uploaded, close the Upload a Custom Image.</li>
<li>Go Back to the Edit &#8220;YourTabName Here&#8221; Settings Dialog box and edit Custom Name if needed (then click Save). Complete the task by clicking the Ok button.</li>
</ul>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Yes, there was the &#8220;timeline&#8221; platform change late last year for our Personal (friends) page and now FB is moving to the &#8220;timeline&#8221; platform for our FanPage (business) pages.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I am very excited about the change as it will keep the layouts consistent with both the Personal and Business pages and offer another opportunity for businesses to benefit from sales through the use of tabs, stars, milestones and pinning to promote your products and services.</p>
