Eye-Fi announced two new wireless memory cards today, and they’ve dubbed their original card with a new name.

The new line-up:

The new line-up:

Eye-Fi Explore: The Explore card can automatically locate nearby WiFi networks and geotag your photos using Skyhook’s global Wi-Fi positioning system. It can also automatically connect to any of Wayport’s 10,000+ hotspots (in other words, pretty much every McDonald’s in the US). MSRP $129.

Eye-Fi Share: The original Eye-Fi card with a new name. It allows users to automatically upload photos straight to their favorite photo sharing service over WiFi. MSRP $99.

Eye-Fi Home: This one’s for the folks who transfer a lot of photos to their computer, but don’t need them to be auto uploaded to any photo sharing sites. The Home allows users to transfer photos directly to their PC without the use of cables, card readers, or docks. Pretty much the same card as the Share, without the sharing part. MSRP $79.

All 3 cards carry 2 gigs of storage, and are Mac/PC compatible.

Eye-Fi will be showing off the Explore card at today’s Where 2.0 Conference, which I’ll be attending - expect some more details later.

In a move which seems totally out of character for them, Apple has stopped selling iPhones through their online store. No “Out of Stock” message or anything to indicate why - they’ve simply removed the “Buy” button.

While this doesn’t absolutely indicate that the 3G iPhone is dropping soon, it .. what am I saying? It definitely indicates that a 3G iPhone is dropping soon. It couldn’t be a bug at this point; it’s been like this for a day now. Apple would certainly notice if their online iPhone sales mysteriously flat-lined for over 24 hours. Unless a large group of people screwed up and then decided to go on vacation simultaneously, something’s going down.

To add to the evidence, every Apple store we called was either completely out of iPhones (both models), or had some miniscule number of 16 GB models left.

So, what is this? It’s a genius marketing move by Apple. It gets the rumor mill churning and crowds buzzing, with little effort or cost on their end. In fact, it could even save Apple money to stop selling the old version a few days before the new one hits the shelves. Everyone who could exchange their suddenly antiquated devices for the fresh model would, so Apple would wind up with’em back in their inventory minus however much it cost them to handle the exchange. They’re offsetting sales a few days to save time and money, and building hype as a side effect.

Anyone want to take a stab at when it’ll hit?

If you’ve ever had to rely on multiple doctors tag teaming an ailment, chances are it wasn’t the smoothest process. Between the Doctor-Patient privacy laws and the half dozen middle men involved, the process almost assuredly hit a snag or two along the way. Now, take away the widespread internet access that allows for instant communication - the process would grind to a halt.

That lack of communication is the problem Brian Levine, a fourth year Med student at New York University, is looking to tackle in Ghana. After setting out to build an online social network for doctors in the region, he found that the required infrastructure just wasn’t there. Few doctors had computers, and even fewer had access to the internet. What they did have, however, were cell phones. If he couldn’t link them across the internet, he’d link them through cell towers.

The main obstacle was cost; though doctors had access to phones, calling one another was pricey. Brian teamed up with Ghana Telecom to build a new mobile network, “Medicare Line”, on which registered doctors can call each other at no expense. With the help of the Ghana Medical Association, they’ve already signed up more than two thousand doctors who have since made over a million calls on the network.

Awesome work, Brian. In a country with far too few doctors for its ever expanding population, any mission to improve the health care system is a valiant one.

With just around a month to go before the iPhone 2.0 software hits, does RIM have reason to sweat? Apple pundit extraordinaire and co-creator of the Markdown syntax, John Gruber, thinks they might.

He brings up a pretty big point: once the iPhone gains its enterprise wings, won’t it do just about everything Blackberry users call for? Push email? Check. Remote wipe? Check. Calendar and contact syncing? Double check. Add in the iPhone’s already extensive catalog of features and the sure-to-be-ridiculous number of third party applications coming with the new app store and.. well, let’s just say RIM’s got their work cut out for them.

RIM’s still got at least two cards left: their devices have physical keyboards, and they’ve got a userbase that is simply massive. The first point is an absolute must for some (myself included). But the second? Many enterprise users are only as loyal as their company’s IT guy. It’s time for some innovation, RIM.

With all the talk of going green this year, South Koreans are using their cell phones to save on the use of small slips of paper that can mount up. Retailers are sending coupons, gift certificates, movie tickets and other such things to a customer’s mobile phone. The message sent to a customer has a picture of a barcode that can be scanned by the retailer.

“People can actually receive products from places just by showing their phones,” Ryu Mina, a spokeswoman with mobile service provider SK Telecom.

Sending barcodes to mobile phones isn’t new. Companies in South Korea started text messaging those cryptic numbers and bars about six year ago. Many people thought the messages were span and deleted them. But this technology has finally caught on with Koreans in their 20s and younger.

It is easy to misplace or forget a slip of paper, but for many of us the cell phone has become another appendage. The mobile barcode has a lot of potential for advertisers, retailers and customers, but hasn’t taken off anywhere. Maybe South Koreas can breathe some life into this idea for other countries.

Now in public beta, GeoGraffiti is a free “Verbal Bulletin Board” that allows you to record and share location-specific voice notes, or “Voice Marks”, whether you’re on the go or in front of your computer. Find a new coffee shop that you love? Call up GeoGraffiti, and leave a Voice Mark to let the world know. Want to warn people where the crack houses are? Voice Mark!

Once you’re registered, any Voice Marks from your mobile phone will be automatically associated with your account and added to the map, where others in the community can rate and respond.

Adding a new location through the site is quick and easy, but doing so over the phone is currently a bit of a chore. If you initiate the Voice Mark over the phone, its placement is only accurate to the zip code. After you record your Voice Mark, you’ll click your way through a series of menus to properly tag your recording - it’s easy to follow, but listening through the options takes a bit too long. It’d be nice to be able to store unpublished voice memos onto my account to be tagged and accurately positioned later.

It’s a rad idea, and could end up being a mega useful on-the-go resource as the userbase grows. Check out the video demo, or just skip it and go right to GeoGraffiti.
