Cherry Mobile Omega X Specs

The Omega X has a lot of great things going for it in addition to its Php4k price tag. For one thing, it has a 6.2 inch HD+ notched display with a resolution of 720 x 1520, giving it a wide aspect ratio of 19:9. It also packs a capable Helio P23 processor to go along with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. As for cameras, you’re getting a 13mp rear shooter and an 8mp shooter for selfies.

Interestingly, it shares a lot of similarities with the Flare S8 at the same price tag. On paper, it has the Omega X beat across a few key specs. For example, the Flare S8 has a slightly larger 6.26″ HD+ notched display. It’s also clocked at a higher 2.3GHz whereas the Omega X is clocked at 2GHz. Finally, the Flare S8 has a dual 13+2MP rear camera and 13mp front camera setup.

Despite these seeming advantages, to me, there’s a clear reason for getting one or the other. Being the higher clocked model, the Flare S8 would appeal to those looking to get the most performance for the money. The Omega X on the other hand may appeal to those who prioritize battery life. And the comparison will be quite clear given that both are rated at 2,800mAh.

Of course, there can’t be a real comparison unless I have both and at the moment, I only have the Flare S8. Hopefully, maybe I can get my hands on the Omega X as well. In the meantime, you might look forward to my review of the Flare S8!

MyPhone has been fairly quiet as of late, but there’s reason to look forward to their next offering, especially if the price is right. The headline specs for the MyPhone X12 are 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage, along with a 6.26 inch HD+ teardrop display. And if the early teaser image is to be believed, it shouldn’t look half bad either, with what appears to be a gradient finish with a subtle implementation of MyPhone’s trademark map of the Philippines on the back.

Other details not mentioned but revealed by the teaser image are dual rear cameras, a single front camera within the teardrop notch, and a fingerprint scanner. As part of their 10th year anniversary celebration, Cherry Mobile is getting all nostalgic with us and updating it for 2019. From its original price of Php999, you can get it for just Php399 on September 10, 2019 if you’re able to show them your original P1 that’s probably still kicking around your drawer.

What’s so new about the Cherry Mobile P1 2019? Although you still get the alphanumeric key layout, the now get a color screen, Bluetooth dialer functionality, built-in flashlight, and even a headset jack. That headset jack is interesting to me, because it might allow me to listen to Spotify while it’s connected to Bluetooth. Gosh, why didn’t I think of that while I was shooting that hands-on video! Oh, and there’s also a P1i, which is basically the special edition sporting the 10th year anniversary logo on the back. It looks just slightly different but functions basically the same as the P1 2019.

The tablet market isn’t thriving as well as smartphones, in fact, far from it. However, that isn’t stopping Huawei from not only outing a new tablet, but making it an upgrade of a product that was released just 3 months ago. Still, that doesn’t mean the Huawei MediaPad M6 Turbo isn’t a decent tablet, because it is.

First, it rocks an 8.4 inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560×1600. Under the hood, it packs a familiar Kirin 980 SoC and 128GB configuration that’s expandable via microSD card. It also comes with a 13MP rear camera and 8mp selfie camera. All of which are powered by a 6,100mAh battery. The “Turbo” part of the name is earned thanks to 6GB of RAM vs its predecessor, which only came with 4GB.

As has been a trend for Huawei, the MediaPad M6 Turbo comes in interesting finishes. You get two color variants, either Phantom Red or Phantom Blue. Depending on how the light is hitting it, it should also display some cool X-patterns.

Currently, these tablets are only available in China, with the WiFi version being priced at CNY 2,699 (about Php19.7K) while the one with a 4G modem will sell for CNY 2,999 (about Php21.8K). Hopefully, we might see the MediaPad M6 Turbo hit Philippine shores soon.

It’s easy to get jaded over every single phone release, especially in the entry-midrange where there’s so much competition. However, the Mi A3 was just launched in the Philippines and there’s good reason to take a look at it. Let’s take a look at the spec sheet.

Mi A3 Specs

Key features include the 6.09 inch HD+ Super AMOLED display, 4GB RAM, and 128GB of storage, all run by a Snapdragon 665 SoC. Amateur photographers will also appreciate its 48+8+2MP triple rear camera, and 32MP front cameras for above average smartphone imaging and video capabilities. Its most notable feature though is that it’s an Android One smartphone, running a pure version of Android 9.0 Pie and guaranteed at least 2 major updates in the next 2 years.

What’s even more surprising is that the Mi A3 is priced at just Php11,990. Sure, the screen resolution might be a bit meh, but the superb contrast of Super AMOLED will more than make up for it.

Cherry Mobile has finally taken the wraps off their newest iteration of the Flare S series and they’re confident enough to call them game changers at a time when they’re facing stiff competition from strong names. After finally getting a chance to spend time with these phones, I can definitely say the Cherry Mobile Flare S8 Series is legit. However in some ways, these phones are very different from each other, and not just in terms of price point. Which one is for you?

Cherry Mobile Flare S8

The handset that will appeal to the most budget-minded users is obviously the Cherry Mobile Flare S8. At just Php3,999, you get a 6.26″ HD+ teardrop display, Helio P23 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. Those are some of the best specs you can get at this price point. And as if that wasn’t enough, they even went the extra mile to give this entry-level handset a smashing glossy gradient finish.

Additionally, it also offers a 13+2MP dual camera setup on the back and another 13MP camera up-front for selfies. The 2,800mAh battery does leave a bit to be desired though. Thankfully, power banks are a fairly inexpensive accessory these days.

If you’re willing to shell out a little more, the Flare S8 Pro is just Php5,999 and gives you a slightly larger 6.5″ teardrop display, and significantly more RAM and storage (4GB/64GB). These are some of the best specs you can get for the money as of writing, especially when it comes to RAM and storage, and it’s all wrapped in an impressive textured gradient finish!

The Flare S8 Pro also comes with a better 20+5MP dual camera setup and 20MP selfie camera. The 4,000mAh is a significant upgrade versus the Flare S8’s paltry battery. Combined with the better RAM and storage, that might make it worth the extra Php2k.

The headliner is definitely the Cherry Mobile Flare S8 Plus, touting a total of 5 cameras, with a 16+5+2MP triple camera setup on the back and 16+2MP dual selfie cameras! Not only that, but the selfie camera is of the pop-up variety! Of course, since it utilizes a pop-up camera mechanism, the screen is notch-less as well!

Additionally, the Flare S8 Plus comes with a Helio P70 processor, 6GB RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The battery could have been better though, as you’re only getting 3,250mAh. The Pearl Black colorway and its gloss finish doesn’t quite have the same impact as either the Flare S8 or Flare S8 Pro.

Which Flare S8 is for You?

The Flare S8 series is one of the most impressive we’ve seen from Cherry Mobile in the last couple of years. To me, the Flare S6 series was a bit of a letdown, while the Flare S7 Plus was the only outstanding model from the last one. Now, we have three phones at three different price points and all three are fairly excellent at those respective price points.

The Flare S8 is obviously for the budget-minded who are trying to get the most bang for their buck. It’s a perfect all-rounder for the price, with few letdowns. The battery might leave you wanting, but a mid-day’s charge is about the norm these days.

The Flare S8 Pro is a significant upgrade versus the Flare S8 though. The slightly larger screen and processor aren’t why you would be getting it though. Rather, it would be the increased 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and better battery and cameras. Considering you can stream a lot of things these days, those who would definitely benefit from the extra Php2k are those with large media libraries.

The Flare S8 Plus is what you would go for if you wanted to experience flagship features at a friendly mid-range price. It has so much going for it, including the 5-camera setup, Helio P70 processor, and increased RAM and storage. The icing on this cake is the pop-up camera mechanism, which you’ll rarely find even at this low of a price point.

Given the past naming convention, the 3 phones above could be the Flare S8, Flare S8 Deluxe, and Flare S8 Plus, although I’ve been hearing the name Flare S8 Pro thrown around as well. In addition to sporting the pop-up camera setup, the lead phone also appears to have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, similar to the Flare X3 that should also make an appearance at July 25’s launch event. And unlike the other 2 phones in the lineup, the Flare S8 Plus/Pro does away with even a teardrop notch.

The local brand has just posted another teaser, this time of another phone in the lineup. How can you tell? The previous teaser detailed the pop-up camera belonging to the lead phone without a notch. This second teaser is for one of the 2 phones that does have a notch. What’s this one about though? Well, we now know that at least one of the Flare S8 series, likely the Flare S8 Deluxe will come with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM. It’s also being showcased as a gaming phone, so expect a capable SoC such as the Helio P60 or better.

At first glance, you might not be able to discern anything, but the render actually shows a large notch. So if you’re not a fan of notched phones and would rather have a dewdrop notch or no notch at all, this isn’t a good indicator. However, the Flare 8 teaser does show a premium-looking aluminum build with antenna notches located on either side of what appears to be a Type-C port. Finally,the Flare 8 Series phones appear to be capable gaming phones, hinted by the gaming-themed graphics of the teaser.

 Of course, let’s not forget about the Flare X3, which will likely be launched at the same event. This one, we know to feature a 6.18″ notched Full HD+ IPS screen, Helio P60 chipset, a whopping 6GB RAM, and 64GB of storage. It also has a premium build with an exquisite glass body and gradient finish. Best of all, we know that phone will be priced at just Php9,999, which is a couple of grand less than the Flare S7 Plus that came with nearly the same specs but with just 4GB RAM.

So even if the Flare 8 Series turns out to be a let-down, the Flare X3 is still something to look forward to. Personally though, I’m really looking forward to the local brand challenge the international budget brands like Realme and Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand so the average Juan has more great options for their hard-earned buck.

SoC hasn’t been revealed, but seeing as this will be an Android Go Edition phone, expect 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Battery-wise, you’re getting a decent 3,000mAh, all priced at just Php3,299.

If you were hoping for something in the midrange, this is far from it. However, Cherry Mobile has been crushing it at the entry-level and there’s little reason for them to deviate from that at the moment. Thankfully, those looking for something a bit more powerful have something else to look forward to.

Cherry Mobile fans who’ve been looking for a mid-range follow up to the Flare S7 Plus have had a lot to look forward to these past few days. After slowly leaking a few camera samples of the Cherry Mobile Flare X3, the local brand then released the specs and gave bloggers unrestricted access to an engineering unit, allowing me to give my hands on impressions of the device. Finally, they’ve announced the price, and boy is it competitive at Php9,999! In case you needed a refresher, here’s what you’re getting for the money.

The Competition

Cherry Mobile has long been content with dominating budget-entry level market. This newest entry is very clearly targeted at the mid-range though. And while the competition also has a number of Helio P60-powered smartphones in their portfolio, none with 6GB RAM below the Php10k mark come to mind.

Hands-on Video

Design

As the lone local brand that’s still able to compete in any significant way against the onslaught of Chinese offerings, I was absolutely floored by the Flare X3 as soon as I first saw it. The Flare S7 Plus was already a handsome phone, but this takes the design to a different level.

First, it comes with a 6.18 inch Full HD+ notched display. Unfortunately, the notch is about as large as on the Flare S7 Plus, which as good as it looks is still a minor annoyance to me.

Second is its purple gradient finish underneath a glass back, which is significantly more premium than the plastic finishes I’ve seen from the competition.

Finally, a metal frame completes the premium look, with an easy to discern power/lock button and side fingerprint scanner that both seem to enhance the detail of the frame.

Camera

A lot of you may be curious as to what kind of camera setup the Flare X3 may be sporting. It comes with a triple rear camera configuration (12MP+5MP+2MP) and I’m told the 3rd camera is meant to enhance black and white (contrast, detail, etc). The front camera arrangement will be a 20MP+2MP configuration. Image processing is said to be enhanced by AI, which is the norm among mid to high end phones these days.

Interestingly, the unit responsible for the leaked photos we saw in days past didn’t actually have its camera app updated yet and didn’t have a proper Night mode. That means those low light images were captured with only normal image processing instead of something that would have enhanced low light further! I’m looking forward to testing a unit that actually has its camera software updated to see how well it does at night!

Other Key Specs

Of course, the Flare X3 is more than its cameras. For one thing, it packs the respectable Helio P60, but even more exciting is it comes with a whopping 6GB of RAM. This configuration is enough to score roughly 125K in Antutu.

Another key feature is its side-mounted fingerprint scanner that’s embedded in the metal frame. I wasn’t able to test how quickly it unlocked the phone, but it’s such an enhancement to the design that I actually look forward to trying it out.

Finally, it runs a fairly vanilla implementation of Android 9.0 Pie. Although I was told that the software isn’t final, they intend to keep it mostly stock. There was however a theme engine that should allow users to still change the look of the software with a single touch without having to install a 3rd party launcher.

Is the Cherry Mobile Flare X3 Worth Waiting For?

Is it? That’s a good question. Aside from the 5 AI cameras and 6GB RAM, the Cherry Mobile Flare X3 specs are roughly similar to the Flare S7 Plus that preceded it. Of course, it’s been a while since that phone launched, so hopefully they’ll still keep the SRP roughly the same or even cheaper! If you’re eager to find out, the Flare X3 is slated to launch mid-July. Stay tuned!

The image appears to have been shot close to sunset, and while there isn’t a lot of natural sunlight left, it does have a lot of artificial lighting. Older phones with basic image processing wouldn’t be able to get decent exposure from a setting like this, although we’ve certainly seen post-processing wonders from many manufacturers as of late. It’s at the very least on par with the low-light capabilities of the Flare S7 Plus, which was a decent low-light camera performer in itself.

Aside from the image quality, you can also assume that the Flare X3 will come with a 5-camera setup thanks to that watermark. It will most likely be in a 3 rear camera and 2 front camera configuration. Not only that, but it appears to have AI-assisted image processing, which should help amateur mobile photographers get the most from their shots.

Looking forward to the Cherry Mobile Flare X3? There isn’t any definitive news yet, although I hear the local brand has something up their sleeves in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

With the battle raging on in the mid-range smartphone market, Cherry Mobile has been mostly content securing their hold on the budget entry-level segment. The Cherry Mobile Flare Y7 LTE is a good example of this, priced at only Php4,299. Of course, the hope is that it performs way better than its price point indicates, and already after having taken it for an initial spin it looks promising.

Build Quality and Design

If anything, the Flare Y7 LTE definitely has a lot going for it in the looks department. It features a 6.2 inch HD+ with a 19:9 aspect ratio and water-drop notch that really maximizes the screen-to-body ratio. The glass back is also an attention-getter, making it look way more premium than it should. I had a couple of friends try it out without looking at the specs, and they guessed the price point to be anywhere from Php9K to Php15K based on looks alone!

Key Specs

Of course, knowing the specs driving the Flare Y7 LTE, I know not to get too excited. It’s equipped with a 1.5GHz quad core processor along with 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage. It was far from the fluid experience I would have wanted, even with a lightweight Android Go running on the device. Thankfully, it at least has LTE, making it much more functional as a secondary phone.

First Impressions

It’s been more than a month since Avengers: Endgame wrapped up a story that was more than a decade in the making. It might not be a surprise if some of you found yourselves in a bit of MCU withdrawal. Good news though! Where it really shines though is the number of things you can make it do via the app. You can even play an immersive AR game that lets you take down enemies, or record phrases and have your face show up when the robot is unmasked!

While a lot of the focus on folding screen tech was snatched up by the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, Lenovoo has decided to come out with something that might end up being more practical. Rather than giving us yet another foldable phone, they instead chose to give us a folding laptop. Not that laptops don’t already fold, but the new prototype does double-duty as a large 13.3″ detachable. Picture something like the Microsoft Surface that can be paired with a keyboard accessory. Then you can take the screen and bend it down the middle, with the bottom half doubling as a keyboard!

Lenovo doesn’t have a name for its new foldable prototype yet, though the ThinkPad logo on its back/lid would indicate that it will be joining its business-oriented lineup. And since it’s adopting the ThinkPad name, Lenovo also promises that whatever iteration of this device ends up hitting the market will have undergone military-grade durability testing, if that’s something that worries you about foldables.

Being a prototype, the end product will probably look much different and certainly more refined that what was demoed. For what its worth though, the 13.3″ 4:3 screen was manufactured by LG and comes with 2K resolution. It also has a Wacom stylus that can be kept on-device thanks to a built in loop.

Their most recent offering is the Sembrandt HT3000, a soundbar with external subwoofer combo rated at 800 PMPO. This will no doubt please fans of its predecessor the Sembrandt SB750, which was a 2.2 channel soundbar that could still have benefited from better bass.

At the moment, we don’t know much else about the Sembrandt HT3000 in the way of specs. However, it does come with a sleeker low-key design and certainly a better-looking remote than the SB750. It also benefits from an Optical port in addition to AUX and co-axial ports. And of course, it still allows you to play your music wirelessly via Bluetooth.

The Flare Y6 Pro is probably the most interesting of this new batch of phones, mainly because it’s the brand’s first smartphone with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. It also comes with quad cameras and a fairly massive 4,000mAh battery. The screen is on the small side though and the rest of the specs aren’t anything to write home about, but at Php4,299, it’s hard to beat that price.

Although none of the phones making their debut here retail above the Php5k mark, it’s a little disappointing to see that there isn’t a new release on the level of their Flare S7 series. Of course, they might be saving that for the latter half of the year. Hopefully, that’s the case as the local phone brand has been facing a lot of stiff competition in the last few years, many of them consistently making more noise. Most of D-Power’s current lineup of power banks come with support for fast charging. She D-Power S10 is no different, although it’s one of the more affordable fast-charging options. As they included it among the products they gave me a while bank, I was able to take it for a spin in the last month.

Build Quality and Design

The D-Power S10 is similar in build quality to the S15PD as it too is encased in a metal shell. However, thanks to its smaller capacity, it’s nowhere near as cumbersome. There is no built-in cable, but that also means all of its ports are on one side of the device.

Features

The D-Power S10 is packed with 12,000mAh of juice. By today’s standards, that should be good enough to charge a smartphone 3 to 6 times over. Thanks to Quick Charge 3.0, it should also be able to charge compatible QC 3.0 devices up to 80% in as little as 35 minutes. Sadly, there’s no PD 3.0 support, for wider fast-charging compatibility, but Qualcomm’s QC 3.0 is one of today’s most popular fast charging standards.

As mentioned, there’s no built-in charging cable, but it does come with 2 Type-A ports, one of which is the fast charging port. There’s also a micro USB port that facilitates charging of the power bank itself.

Of course, it too comes with an LED indicator to show the exact remaining capacity. I do find the screen on this one is smaller and a little harder to read though. The button that triggers the LED indicator is likewise hard to press.

So Should You Buy the D-Power S10?

The D-Power S10 is one of their more affordable power banks with support for fast charging. However, unlike the others, it only supports QC 3.0, not PD 3.0, which is a shame really, as it limits the number of fast charging devices that are compatible with the S10. I’m less inclined to buy this one, although at Php1,399 it’s still reasonably priced.

High capacity power banks are a great accessory to have. However, they’re basically a dime a dozen, and it can be difficult to choose one as there are just so many great and affordable options in the market. The D-Power S15PD 24,000mAh power bank sets itself apart not only by blowing out most other power banks by sheer capacity, but by speed and versatility as well.

Build Quality and Design

The worst thing about the S15PD is its sheer size and weight. It measures 142 x 74.5 x 17.5mm and weighs 542g (more than half a kilo!), making it a literal power brick! No doubt this is due to its capacity, although encasing it in a metal shell certainly didn’t help. Still, I’d rather a power bank be durable and D-Power made sure that was the case with the S15PD.

Features

As mentioned, the D-Power S15PD has a 24,000mAh capacity, which is more than double what you would typically see in most other high capacity power banks out there. Before the S15PD, I’d go on road trips with 2 or 3 10,000mAh power banks. Now, I only have to go out with one.

You won’t be wanting for ports either. It comes with 2 Type-A ports, one of which supports PD3.0 and QC3.0 fast charge standards, while the other one supports your regular 1A output. There’s also a Type-C port that can either charge another device or serve to charge the S15PD itself. And yes, you’ll be happy to know that this gargantuan power bank supports quick charging itself as well.

Finally, to top things off, the D-Power S15PD comes with an LED indicator that displays remaining capacity in percentages. This has been a common feature on D-Power’s power banks and I’m glad to see it here because of its accuracy versus other products that only show 4-bars.

So Should You Buy the D-Power S15PD?

Versus some of D-Power’s other power banks, the S15PD’s design is utilitarian at best. However, it outdoes the competition, not just by sheer capacity, but in its versatility and quick charge options as well. At Php1,999, it’s one of the best and most affordable options considering its capacity and features.

It supports PD3.0 and QC3.0 quick charge technologies, allowing it to fast charge compatible phones from 0% to 80% in just 35 minutes.

As for power delivery, the S8+ is a beast capable of charging up your devices in a variety of ways. The niftiest method is via Qi wireless charging. The Qi wireless charging standard is one of the most popular out there, so if your phone can be charged wirelessly, it’s likely that it will work with the S8+.

It also has a USB 3.0 A port and Type-C port, as well as a built-in 2-in-1 cable that does double-duty as micro USB or lightning cable. The best part? The wireless charging mat, Type A and C, as well as the 2-in-1 cable can be used at the same time, meaning you can charge up to 4 devices simultaneously!

And as if that wasn’t enough, the LED indicator shows remaining battery capacity in percentages! That way, you can accurately identify how much juice is left in the S8+ rather than guessing how long that last bar is going to last.

So Should You Buy the D-Power S8+

With so many power banks out there, some of which actually retail for Php500, it can be difficult to stand out. However, the D-Power S8+ isn’t your ordinary power bank. It combines wired and wireless charging, with support for quick charging technologies for the ideal charging solution. At Php1,599, it’s actually quite pricey, but personally, I think it’s worth it to have a power bank that’s as quick and versatile as the S8+.

Sometimes I wonder if manufacturers intentionally make the wall chargers that come with their smartphones easy to break. I don’t even bother with the stock charger these days, as I’d prefer to get something more intelligent when it comes to power management. I have a VoltIQ capable desk charger that I like, although it would have been nice at the time to have the D-Power QA-05 as an option back then. It looks like your regular wall charger, but it’s surprisingly feature-packed.

First of all, it comes with 2 ports, a quick charge port and a regular 1A port. What kind of quick charge standard does it support? Why, it handles both Quick Charge 3.0 as well as Huawei’s Super Charge fast charging technologies. It’s a little pricey though, at Php599, but you won’t find many fast charging wall chargers that support multiple standards at this price!

Just how slim can a 10,000mAh power bank get? The Tronsmart Trim is one of the most pocketable options at this capacity, measuring just 11.8mm thick. That’s even thinner than D-Power’s S8+!

The Trim isn’t your typical high capacity power bank as it supports PD 3.0, QC 3.0, as well as Huawei’s FCP quick charge standards, making it one of the most widely compatible power banks when it comes to fast charging. It doesn’t ignore safety either, as it’s protected against short circuiting, over-current, over-voltage, over-discharge, over-charge, and overheating. Phew!

The Tronsmart Trim is pretty pricey though at Php1,999. Not the best price tag, but you’re paying more for its slim design and fast-charging capabilities than anything else.

So if you have a power bank, no doubt you’ll always have both a micro USB and lightning cable creating clutter in your bag. The D-Power S26 aims to solve this though. And its 11,000mAh capacity doesn’t hurt either.

Build Quality and Design

Thanks to a plastic construction, the D-Power S26 is able to keep its weight down despite its large battery capacity. The textured casing also helps by making it easier to hold. Most guys will be able to fit this into a pants pocket with their phone.

Features

As mentioned, the S26 comes with 11,000mAh of juice, which puts it a notch above the typical 10,000mAh power banks in the market. While it doesn’t have PD3.0 or QC3.0 fast charging technologies, it can charge most devices faster as it supports up to 2.1A output.

Power delivery methods include the typical Type-A port for most devices. However, the star of the show is the convenient built-in 2-in-1 cable that doubles as a micro USB and lightning cable. The fit is a bit tight though, as they made the cable just short enough to sit flush against the body, but hardly long enough to make it easy to plug back into the body after use. It also seems a little thin to my liking.

Another favorite feature of mine is the LED indicator that shows remaining juice in percentages instead of the typical 4-bar indicator. This makes it easier to gauge just how much power is left instead of guessing whether that last bar is showing 1% or 25% remaining power.

So Should You Buy the D-Power S26?

Unlike some of the other D-Power power banks I’ve tried recently, the S26 doesn’t come with support for fast charging tech like PD3.0 and QC3.0. However, it makes up for it with versatility and a relatively high 11,000mAh capacity, not to mention its lightweight build for its Php999 asking price tag. And it’s not like 2.1A output is painfully slow as the S26 will still charge most devices faster than your typical wall charger.

While the Flare series has taken most of the spotlight among Cherry Mobile’s smartphones, let’s not forget they have a few other nice entry level options. The Cherry Mobile Omega HD Duo is one such option, sporting a 5 inch HD screen, 2GB RAM, and 16GB of storage. It’s far from a world beater, but good enough for someone who’s buying their first smartphone. I was able to get my hands on this phone a while back and will be coming out with a full review soon. In the meantime, here are some benchmark scores!

This first set of scores are your typical number crunching benchmarks that try to gauge overall performance. The Omega HD Duo doesn’t exactly blow anything out of the water, but it’s important to temper your expectations as this is an entry level smartphone.

From a pure performance standpoint, you can’t expect much from the Omega HD Duo, and it does have its merits. Watch out for the full review soon!

Audio Quality

The D-power K91W LED comes equipped with a 2″ tweeter and 6.5″ woofer, with a max output of 30w. This gives it an advantage against even some of the other larger Bluetooth speakers as it has its own separate woofer for bass. It isn’t as good as some basic home theater systems, but for a Bluetooth speaker, it’s great. There’s even a function that allows you to boost the overall volume to almost twice the normal range.

It even has a proper vent that allows the K91W LED to use its large body and aid in the reproduction of lower bass frequencies. In a small room, you’ll appreciate the bass it’s able to deliver. And while it won’t be as evident in larger spaces, the K91W LED compensates with its loudness boost.

Features

Now in case you didn’t already realize it, this thing has “LED” in its name and if you’re an EDM lover, the D-power K91W LED can get really trippy with its lighting effects. The LEDs are hidden behind the front grill and just on top of the speakers themselves and are capable of different ambient effects as well as one mode that lets it double as a visual equalizer.

As if it wasn’t enough, even the handle can light up!

The K91W isn’t just about looks though. It also comes with a host of inputs and control options. It’s certainly more than you’d normally see on any other Bluetooth speaker. You can cycle between AUX, Bluetooth, and USB modes at the press of a button. There are also individual knobs to control the master volume, bass, echo, and mic separately. As for audio sources, you can plug in a flash drive or Micro SD card, in addition to connecting to your phone via Bluetooth. You can use it as a personal PA system, either via the wired mic input or the included wireless mic. The wireless mic is pretty crappy for singing and videoke though, so I’d recommend getting a proper mic for that.

Of course, completing the boombox are the detachable straps for convenient portability. The K91W LED is pretty heavy, so you’ll no doubt appreciate this simple feature.

So Should You Buy the D-Power K91W LED?

As popular as boomboxes were in the 90s, they have a different appeal in this day and age. They’re larger than your average Bluetooth speaker and can’t easily be stashed in your bag. However, Bluetooth boomboxes like the D-Power K91W LED have plentiful uses even if they aren’t as portable. I’ve already used this numerous times when the videoke mic wasn’t working properly at a friends house and I’d substitute it with the K91W LED and plug a mic into it. It’s also versatile enough that it can be used at a range of events like pool parties, birthday parties, and team building events that it’s practically a no-brainer buy for just Php4,399!

Cherry Mobile Flare Watch

Finally, we have the Flare Watch. As uninspired as the name may be, it’s actually the most premium wearable of the bunch thanks to a heavier metal body. It comes with a larger 1.3″ circular LED display and IP68 scratch and waterproofing. This is a better, all-around version versus the Flare Sport and is something you’d want for all the same features that some more expensive wearables come with. Price: Php2,499

Another year, another Supremo. Kimstore has been bringing in these budget action cameras for a few years now, starting with the original Supremo One, then the Supremo 4K that I had the pleasure of reviewing. That was then followed up by the Supremo 4K Plus and now we have the Supremo Conquest. As its predecessors, the Supremo Conquest is priced at just Php3,880 when you buy it from Kimstore. For the money you’re getting a budget action camera that can take up 20mp stills and 4K video at 24fps.

The Realme 3 has arrived in the Philippines and the local midrange market has just gotten real! The PH market is getting 3 different RAM/ROM variants and they’re all under Php10k! So what are you getting?

Display

The Realme 3 boasts of a 6.22 inch HD+ IPS screen with a waterdrop notch designed to maximize the display area while still retaining a front camera. On top of that, it’s protected with Gorilla Glass 3, for exemplary scratch and shatter resistance.

Processor

Although there’s a variant of the Realme 3 that comes with a Helio P70 SoC, the ones that made it to the Philippines only come with the Helio P60. That’s not to say it’s a bad chip, especially at this price point. It’s quite the powerful midrange processor we saw brands like Oppo and Vivo slap on their phones with prices ranging Php15K and upwards.

Cameras

If you’re looking for capable camera smartphone, the Realme 3 could be the phone for you. Its 13mp+2mp dual rear camera setup can help you achieve those DSLR quality blurred background shots and its nightscape mode performs better than that of more expensive phones. Its selfie camera is nothing to sneeze at either. It has an AI beauty mode as well and can blur the backgrounds of your portraits too.

Color Variants

Its not often that I write about color variants being an actual feature, but the Realme 3’s glossy Radiant Blue and Dynamic Black gradient finishes are something you’ll come to appreciate. It’s not as good as what Huawei has done on some of their phones though, although those have tended to be mid-high end phones, not near-entry level phones like the Realme 3.

Pricing

As mentioned, the Realme 3 is priced quite attractively. The 3GB+32GB variant goes for just Php6,990 but is an online-only exclusive. If you’re quick though, you might be able to get it for just Php6,290 when it goes on sale at March 25 with Shopee using a 10% discount voucher. The 3GB+64GB and 4GB+64GB variants on the other hand go for Php7,990 and Php9,990 respectively.

The Flare S7 series was a promising reboot for Cherry Mobile’s famous budget-minded smartphone lineup. Interestingly, they decided to come out with 2 variants: 2GB and 3GB models. While the 2GB RAM variant is just Php4,599, by adding just a few more hundred pesos, you can get the 3GB model for just Php4,999! Is there any real benefit to having 3GB RAM on an entry level phone like this though? Find out soon by staying tuned for the upcoming full review. The scores are to be expected for an entry-level device. I also ran the Flare S7 against some gaming and GPU benchmarks. Let’s see how it fares.

From experience, achieving at least a 13fps in GFXBench’s T-Rex benchmark would result in average-yet-serviceable performance in casual games, but the Flare S7 misses that mark. It’s far from a world breaker, and it’s definitely not a gaming phone. So who is this phone for then? Find out soon in my full review!

For one thing, their goal is to bring the best features to every price point in their product lineups while minimizing their profits. What does that mean? The Cherry Mobile Flare Y3 Mini is the smallest in the lineup, with a screen measuring just 4 inches across. It also comes with a basic 5MP rear and 2MP front camera setup. This is most ideal as your child’s first phone. Of course, this in no way meant to encourage smartphone addiction in a child, but they’re still going to need an inexpensive phone you can contact them with in case of emergencies, or even if you just miss them. Price? Php2,299

Cherry Mobile Flare Y3

The Cherry Mobile Flare Y3 is basically the Y3 Mini’s bigger brother. The main difference is that it comes with a larger 5 inch FWVGA screen, and better 8MP main camera. I’d recommend this for your grandparents, older parents or grade schoolers with larger hands. And it’s actually not a whole lot more expensive than the Flare Y3 Mini. Price? Php2,599

Cherry Mobile Flare Y6

Finally, there’s the Flare Y6, which comes with a 5.45 inch Trueview 18:9 screen. That’s wider than even the industry’s standard widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9. Who is this for though? I’d say it’s for the avid yet budget-minded movie buff with GBs worth of movies in their media library. The Flare Y6 supports up to 32GB micro SD cards, so you’ll be able to take quite a few movies with you on the go. It’s also a handsome looking phone for the price, so if you’re conscious about aesthetics as well, the Flare Y6 won’t disappoint. Price? Php2,999

Given the small price difference between the three, the Flare Y6 is the recommendation I’d make. What do you guys think though?

Okay, the Php10 phone in question is the Cherry Mobile C26i, a basic feature phone that will allow you to call, text, and snap a few photos with its VGA camera. While most of the talk has been around Samsung and Huawei’s newest foldables, the Nubia Alpha is another great showcase of new screen tech that’s making its way to the general consumer. Smartwatches aren’t new, but the Alpha is being touted as a full-fledged smartphone that goes around your wrist. It packs a 960×192 flexible OLED made by Victorinox and can send texts, make calls, and of course, access the internet thanks to eSIM support.

What makes it tick though? Under the hood of the Nubia Alpha is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset. It also comes with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which is enough for roughly 1,000 songs should you load them onto the phone/watch. While designed for wearables, its chipset is actually quite long in the tooth at this point, with a newer Wear 3100 chip that was intended to replace already out since last year. Hopefully, the Alpha’s software is better optimized, because Android Wear was already a bit laggy on the 2100.

Still, the Nubia Alpha is a wearable that should be celebrated. Similar to the foldables that have already come out, it too tries to defy form factors by combining a smartphone and smartwatch into a single device that blurs the lines between both.

The Mi 9 also comes with plenty of other flagship class specs. One of the sensors in its triple camera setup is a 48mp Sony IMX586, which is probably one of the biggest contributors to its 107 DxOMark camera rating. The other two are a 16mp Sony IMX481 super-wide camera and a 12mp Samsung S5K3M5 telephoto camera with 2x lossless zoom. For selfies, you get a 20mp front-facing camera. Additionally, it comes with an in-display fingerprint reader, 27W fast charging, 20W wireless fast charging, and Bluetooth 5.

The design is also something to talk about. The Mi 9 comes in three main color variants – Lavender Violet, Ocean Blue, and Piano Black – with a curved glass back design that plays with the light, giving it a premium feel. It’s nowhere near as good-looking as the gradient finishes we’ve seen from the likes of Huawei, but it’s still quite the conversation starter. If you really want to start a conversation though, the Alita Edition comes with a transparent glass back that gives you a direct look into the stylized heat shielding, not to mention 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Unfortunately, it isn’t perfect. For example, its 2280 x 1080 Full HD+ resolution is adequate but behind the curve for most flagships, even by 2018 standards. Few people will perceive the difference in sharpness against a 4K screen, but it’s there if your eyes know how to look for it. Additionally, there’s no expandable storage, which heavy media users will sorely miss.

Xiaomi Mi 9 Specs

We’re only a day away from the official launch of the Xiaomi Mi 9 and there’s already a lot of promotional images, videos and even full specs making the rounds. One interesting factoid is that the Alita Special Edition is actually the Transparent Edition of the said phone. The Mi 9 Alita Special Edition is not only said to come with a whopping 12GB of RAM , but will have a clear glass back as well. This transparent back cover will give the illusion of peering into its high tech internals, although similar to what they did with the Mi 8 Pro Explorer Edition, that won’t be a real PCB you’ll be looking at.

Other differences between the Alita Special Edition versus a regular Mi 9 can be found in the camera. Both will sport a 48mp rear shooter, the Alita Edition will have a better f/1.47 aperture and 7P lens versus the regular version that will come with f/1.75 aperture and 6P lens. Everything else should be identical between the two, including a Snapdragon 855 SoC, AMOLED display by Samsung, and an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The tablet market has been nowhere as successful as smartphones and it’s only gotten worse in the last few years with no end in sight. Samsung, apparently, is one of the few that have decided to stay in the race. The most recent iteration of their top tablet offering is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e, a 10.5 inch tablet with a Super AMOLED display and a body that measures just 5.5mm thin. It can last over 14 hours on a single charge if you’re watching video! It also runs on Android 9.0 Pie and has the new Bixby 2.0 virtual assistant.

Under the hood, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC with a choice of either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. There are also 64GB and 128GB options for storage. Of course, we can go on and on about the Galaxy Tab S5e’s specs, but thankfully, Samsung made a much more entertaining video to do just that. The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M2 looks to build on the success of its predecessor, which was a surprise hit last year. The Max Pro M2 is priced to move, packing some great specs at a sweet mid-range price point. ASUS Philippines was kind enough to send over a review unit and boy did I take it for a test run on my last trip to Bicol. For what it’s worth, I got the 6GB/64GB variant and there’s a 4GB/64GB also available. Want to know how it fared? Read on for the full review!

ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M2 Specs

For its price point, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is attractive, at least on paper. Check out the full specs below:

What’s in the Box?

The Zenfone Max Pro M2 comes in your typical brick of a box that slides out of a sleeve. Inside you’ll find the following:

• Handset
• Clear jelly case
• Warranty booklet
• User guide
• SIM ejector tool
• In-ear headset with in-line remote and mic
• Extra earbuds
• Micro USB to USB data/charging cable
• Wall charger (2A output)

The case and SIM ejector tool are thoughtful extras you won’t often find bundled with most other standard smartphone retail packages. So are the extra buds, although the 2A charger will probably be the most underrated accessory, allowing you to charge your phone faster. Overall, above average for a smartphone like this.

Build Quality and Design

Whereas its predecessor sported a more subdued and understated design, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 has an eye-catching 3D gloss design dubbed “Wave finish”. While undoubtedly pretty and an upgrade in aesthetics, it’s a fingerprint magnet that will annoy those of you with OC tendencies. That doesn’t make it any less gorgeous though if you take time to wipe it off.

In addition, the display makes use of a notch that houses the front camera and sensors. It’s a trend we’ve seen since last year and while smaller than most, it would have been nice to have one of those pea-sized water-drop notches that’s just becoming its own thing now.

One thing I don’t like about the design though is that it comes with a micro USB port instead of Type-C, which would have made better sense on a large battery handset. It might have kept the cost down, but charging times with the Zenfone Max Pro M2 will no doubt be longer than those with Type-C ports.

Display

The Zenfone Max Pro 2 follows the trend of notched displays, although the notch on this one is thankfully smaller than most. It’s no waterdrop, but it does help maximize the 1080 x 2280 Full HD+ resolution. Unfortunately, there isn’t a software feature that allows you to “turn the notch off” so you can see more notifications, even if you go directly into the settings.

Being an IPS display, color reproduction and saturation were great. Readability was particularly excellent and I could read the homescreen clock with the phone tilted almost completely sideways. While not the ideal way to watch a movie with someone else, the screen is large enough that you can hold it far enough away so neither of you are straining.

Software and UI

If you didn’t take kindly to ASUS’ custom ZenUI, you’ll be happy to know that the Zenfone Max Pro M2 runs on a near-vanilla Android 8.1 Oreo. The only ASUS apps were the Sound Recorder, FM Radio, and Calculator. I will miss the auto-sorting folders of ZenUI, but it’s a small price to pay for less annoying software.

Benchmarks and Performance

The Max Pro M2 is driven by Qualcomm’s midrange Snapdragon 660 SoC. It’s a fairly respectable chipset and it’s nice to see it on a phone that’s on the low end of the Php10-20k bracket. Here are some scores from some of my favorite benchmarking apps.

Connectivity

The Zenfone Max Pro M2 comes with a complete suite of wireless connectivity options. You’re getting up to LTE-A mobile data and support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands.

As for wired connectivity, you’re only getting a micro USB port rather than Type-C, which I’ll complain about later on in this review.

Camera

While this is primarily a battery-centric handset, it also comes equipped with some decent imaging hardware. On the back, you’re getting a 12mp/5mp dual camera shooter for some neat bokeh tricks. The front camera on the other hand is a fixed focus 13mp affair.

Additionally, a recent update just gave the Zenfone Max Pro M2 some much-appreciated AI-assisted camera software, which unfortunately I wasn’t able to test at the time of the review. However, it does come with your typical set of shooting options.

I still got some pretty awesome shots even without AI assist! Here are some sample shots below:

Outdoor / Overcast

This was shot slightly after the golden hour, although it was still able to capture a nice amount of detail.

Selfie / Lowest Beauty Setting

The selfie camera is also pretty decent and comes with a beauty mode. You’ll want to dial it all the way down though as this mode typically overdoes the beautification on any phone.

Food Shots

You’ll probably get a lot of mileage out of the Zenfone Max Pro M2’s cameras as it takes great closeups of your food in the right lighting.

Bokeh Shots

I really liked the shallow depth-of-field effect the dual cameras provided and it didn’t look too artificial as it can on some other setups.

Night Shots

One thing I’m not a huge fan of is the night mode. While it does bump the brightness up, the signages always end up over-exposed. Overall though, not bad for a midrange smartphone that isn’t primarily a camera phone.

Gaming

If you’re looking for a gaming smartphone, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is a promising handset, primarily due to a combination of a decent chipset and excellent battery life. While you’re not going to get top-shelf graphics, the Adreno 512 GPU is more than enough for most games you’ll find on the Play Store. I was able to play popular games like Honkai Impact 3 and Dragon Ball Legends with nary a hiccup. Where I really appreciated the battery life though was on Ragnarok M, which I was able to set to Auto attack for 7 straight hours!

Multimedia

For those with extensive media libraries or streaming services, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 will help you maximize them. The combination of excellent screen, large storage, and high speed connectivity all make it a powerhouse of a multimedia device

Battery Life

If it’s from the Zenfone Max lineup, battery life is going to be the focus, and the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is no different. Packing a 5,000mAh, it’s got enough juice to comfortably last for a couple of days before having to be plugged in again.

Its battery life in the real world is pretty excellent too. I’m typically able to go 14 hours straight with mobile data and WiFi always turned on to go along with some heavy gaming. And as previously mentioned, I was able to get 7 hours straight of Ragnarok M on Auto.

In the past, gamers would often have to charge once or twice a day whereas now, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 can last an entire day at school or work!

One thing I don’t like though is that it skips the USB Type-C and instead goes for Micro USB. Sure, it’s still able to charge at a faster rate than most phones, it’s large battery would have benefited more from the high speed charging that Type-C can provide.

So Should You Buy It?

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M2 is an excellent midranger, providing a lot of bang-for-buck, not to mention excellent battery life for just Php14,995 for the 6GB RAM variant and even as low as Php12,995 for the 4GB RAM version. Whether you’re a budget-minded gamer, power user, or social media savant, the Max Pro M2 will meet your needs and then some. However, it does not exist in a vacuum and there are a lot of worthy challengers at this price point, some of which probably come with sizeable batteries + a Type-C port. Still, if you do decide to drop your money on this, you won’t be disappointed!

If you’re into gadgets, there’s a big chance you got one or three over the holidays. Whether it’s a smartphone, Blutooth speaker, or other doo-hicky, you’re going to need a lot of separate chargers. The Fusion is advertised as being water-resistant, shock-proof, and drop-proof thanks to a rubberized body that’s available in Fuse Blue and Fuse Black.

Its battery is rated at 1200mAh and should provide anywhere from 3 to 6 hours of listening.

My favorite part about it though is the unique design. Not that there’s any shortage of design variety out there among Bluetooth speakers. However, the Fusion doesn’t look like it will be confused with anything out there.

As quickly as it became a fad, it looks like the notch is now going the way of the dodo (that is, extinct). Or at the very least, a far from premium option. Smartphone companies have been working on minimizing the notch over the last year or so, and we’re now seeing phones like the newly launched Huawei Nova 4 and it’s hole-punch display. And that punched hole is quite minuscule, yet manages to pack a 25mp selfie camera.

Also, the Nova 4 is no slouch. Underneath the hood, it packs a 2.36GHz 64-bit Kirin 970 octa-core processor with its own dedicated NPU for AI applications. Gaming is supplemented by a Mali-G72 MP12 GPU with GPU Turbo technology for smoother gameplay. Other specs include a 6.4 inch Full HD+ (1080 x 2310) display, 8GB RAM, and 128GB RAM. It also has a great 48mp shooter on the back.

The Huawei Nova 4 was launched in China with a price tag of CNY3,399, or roughly Php26.1k as of writing. Unfortunately, Huawei Philippines has already gone out of its way to say that the Nova 4 won’t make its way to our shores. Don’t be too disappointed though. There’s a possibility they just don’t want to cannibalize sales of what might be a similar offering in the future from their sub-brand Honor.

While all eyes are on the ASUS ROG Phone, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will likely sell a whole lot better. Not only is it significantly more affordable, but it also promises long battery life and great imaging for about Php10k. Does it deliver on that promise though? Well, ASUS Philippines was kind enough to lend me the 3GB/32GB variant for review and here are my findings. But first, let’s take a look at the specs as they would appear on paper.

What’s in the Box?

As big as the Zenfone Max Pro is, I’ve seen smaller phones come in larger boxes. Surprisingly though, it comes with a little more than the usual retail package.

So yeah, most of that is the norm, but the clear soft case is a nice extra that lets you skip on that inevitable extra purchase.

Build Quality and Design

While there’s nothing about the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro’s design that we haven’t seen already in 2018, it’s still very much a modern smartphone. The 5.99 inch screen and its 18:9 aspect ratio allow it to achieve a higher screen-to-body ratio.

At a quick glance, you might mistake it for an iPhone sans a home button due to its rounded edges and corners. It’s slightly thicker and heavier than other smartphones of this screen size. However, you’ll hardly mind since it’s housing a massive 5,000mAh battery and the weight and handling becomes a non-issue after a few minutes with the phone.

Display

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 sports a 5.99 inch FHD+ (1080 x 2160) IPS display with a pixel density of 404ppi and if you’re not a fan of notched displays, I’m happy to report that it doesn’t have one. As expected of this panel type, you’re getting great brightness, color reproduction, and viewing angles. Contrast leaves just a slight bit to be desired though. It’s not that bad, although it isn’t that good either.

Software and UI

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 runs Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box that looks looks really close to stock. Unlike ASUS’ cartoony ZenUI, this iteration is much easier on the eyes in my opinion although that could be subjective. The advantage of this though is there isn’t a lot of extra bloat to bog the UX down.

Benchmarks and Performance

Thanks to a capable Snapdragon 636 SoC, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is able to handle just about any app you could throw at it from the Play Store with its eight 1.8 GHz Kryo 260 cores. Of course, it isn’t a top-tier SoC by any means, but you’ll rarely feel like the device is lacking in the performance department. Still, here are some benchmark scores to give you an idea of how well it performs:

Connectivity

The aforementioned Snapdragon 636 SoC affords the Zenfone Max Pro M1 with up to 4G/LTE data connectivity, with support for the LTE 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, and 40 bands. You also get WiFi a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0. Unfortunately, you’re only getting a micro USB 2.0 port instead of Type-C.

Camera

Just because the Zenfone Max Pro emphasizes battery performance doesn’t mean ASUS forgot about anything else, particularly the cameras. In this case, the phone comes with a dual rear camera setup (13mp+5mp) and LED flash. You get all the normal camera modes you’d expect from most smartphones: Auto, HDR, Panorama, and Night mode. However, you also get a few extra that you might not often see: Sports, Landscape, Flowers, Backlight, Sunset, Beach, and even Snow! Unfortunately, the samples below have been heavily down-sized. And of course, that second camera affords it another mode: Depth effect. Otherwise known among iPhone users as portrait mode, it uses the second camera to capture depth information to simulate a blurred background while keeping the subject in focus. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 achieves this well enough, without that distinctive cutout effect that’s immediately apparent on lower end dual camera implementations.

The selfie camera is where they had to cut corners though. You’re only getting an 8mp fixed focus shooter, although interestingly it too has a portrait mode to achieve blurred backgrounds despite only having one camera to do it with.

Gaming

It would be far-fetched to expect a phone priced at under Php10k to perform well as a gaming platform and you’d mostly be right. The Adreno 509 GPU gives the Zenfone Max Pro just enough oomph to play any game out there but the graphics will be far from perfect. There’ll be significant frame drops here and there and you’ll never be able to max out the details on the higher end games. Still, most casual users will be satisfied with the Max Pro M1’s gaming prowess.

Multimedia

The wider 18:9 aspect ratio offers a unique viewing experience at times as a lot of movies are shot in wider than 16:9 aspect ratios. However, since most other video content is shot in 16:9, you’ll end up with pillar-boxing (black bars on the sides) a lot of times.

Audio will be a slightly better experience, especially if you prefer to listen using the loudspeakers a lot as the ones on the Zenfone Max Pro M1 are particularly loud with minimal distortion at max volume. Of course, if you go for a headset, you’ll be happy to know the 3.5mm headset jack is alive and well on this phone.

If you like to download your media rather than stream them though, you’ll quickly find that the 22GB available storage from the advertised 32GB is too limited. Thankfully, there’s a dedicated micro SD slot if that ever becomes a problem.

Battery Life

This being a Zenfone Max phone, you’d expect it to get great results in this section of the review. You won’t be disappointed. I ran it on GFXBench’s T-Rex battery life test, which loops the test 30x and measures how much is depleted then translates that into overall battery life. Based on the results, you can use the Zenfone Max Pro M1 for about 9.5 hours of straight gaming. For normal everyday applications, I was able to make it last roughly 2 and a half days before I ever had to charge.

So Should You Buy It?

If you’re buying the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1, it’s for the battery life. And you won’t be disappointed. Its 5,000mAh battery will give you more than a couple of day’s worth of up time and 9.5 hours of gaming time. However, it manages to over-deliver as well, packing a decent screen and cameras for a better all-around experience. Sure, the Zenfone Max Pro isn’t perfect, but ASUS cut off just the right corners so it never feels like a compromise.

The Cherry Mobile Flare S7 Plus is one of the most impressive smartphones the local brand has released in years and is one of their first to tout AI-assisted cameras. So just how good is the camera on the Flare S7 Plus? Take a look at some of the shots I’ve taken over the past few weeks that I’ve been able to use it.

HDR

One of the first shots I took with the Flare S7 Plus was this outdoor shot in HDR mode where it overlays two exposures (underexposed + overexposed) to achieve an image that’s more or less perfectly exposed. This was taken a little close to lunch time with some dark shadows, although it was a little overcast. With just a little symmetry and a decent camera, any location can turn out to be a memorable photo that can tell a story.

Selfies

Of course, I also tried out the selfie camera. The first shot was inside the car with normal ambient daytime lighting while the second was a back-lit selfie. The latter would be a challenge for mediocre selfie cameras, but was handled just fine by the Flare S7 Plus, managing to achieve just the right exposure for both the subject (me) and the background.

Food Shots

When taking food shots, I sometimes alternated between the Bokeh mode and HDR, depending on the lighting.

What impressed me though was the low-light performance. Usually in poor lighting, I would just give up on the shot since I hate using the flash. In this case, I just shot in Bokeh mode and was able to get decent enough detail that when I corrected it in Photoshop it still looked like a great shot. See above for comparison.

Bokeh Mode

Anyone’s favorite mode these days is “bokeh”, which used to be only achievable on expensive DSLRs. These days, most dual camera smartphone setups can achieve this too, and it works well on the Flare S7 Plus. In the above shots, you can see the gradual blur as you move further away from the subject instead of a harsh drop-off in sharpness, which is the ideal and more realistic effect.

The Flare S7 Plus has a lot of things going for it, such as specs and price. With an awesome camera in tow, this could be one of their best and most well-rounded phones to date!

Realme 2 Pro

Unlike the Realme 2 and 2 Pro though, the C1 has not been confirmed to be headed to the Philippines. Although a decent handset at a potentially attractive Php5.3K after conversion, it might have a tougher time challenging the entry level market that’s dominated by our local brands. Xiaomi’s budget sub-brand Redmi is one of the few international brands that I look forward to because of their ability to compete in the midrange segment, especially in the Php10k+ range. The Redmi Note 6 Pro, one of their newest smartphones, is about to make its entry into the Philippine market and to get fans excited, Mi Philippines decided to announce the price ahead of time.

Based on the image above that was shared on Facebook, we’ll be getting a 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB variant priced at Php10,990 and Php12,990, respectively. While it’s not much of an upgrade from its predecessor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it’s still a compelling buy at either price point.

In a year where gaming-centric phones suddenly became a thing, leave it to ASUS to bring their A-game. Not only did they design one of the best gaming phones out there, but they also came out with a whole slew of accessories to go with it!

Of course, up until now, we haven’t known when it will actually reach Philippine shores. And the timing of it couldn’t have been better. That doesn’t mean we haven’t missed a good release from them though. After all, it seems like we’ve gone an entire year without a notable Flare series worth talking about. That suddenly changed with the arrival of the Cherry Mobile Flare S7 series. Starting at just Php4,599, they pack a lot of features for the price.

Obviously, the entry level model in the series, the Flare S7 comes in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants. You get an 18:9 HD+ screen and 16GB RAM driven by a reasonably decent MT6739WA 1.3GHz quad core processor with a 2,400mAh battery providing the juice. Other cool features include a quad camera setup (2 in front, 2 on the back) and a fingerprint scanner.

The choice of processor here is important since the MT 6739WA natively supports dual camera setups. Some of Cherry Mobile’s affordable but older dual camera smartphones sported the MT6580, which didn’t actually support dual cameras. The end effect was more of a radial blur than a real bokeh effect resulting from a true depth-sensing camera.

For just Php4,599 you can get the 2GB RAM version, but spend a little more and you’ll be able to get the 3GB RAM variant for and additional Php500 (Php4,999).
