Case review: OtterBox Commuter Series for iPhone 4

OtterBox is known for making some of the most heavy duty and durable cases on the market to protect your delicate products. But if you’re someone who doesn’t want extreme bulk and are looking for a more slim, yet more protective case for your iPhone, OtterBox hasn’t forgotten about you. Does the Commuter Series case stand up to the tests? Should this be your next case? Or should you pass on it and not look back? Read on for our full review of the OtterBox Commuter Series case for the Apple iPhone 4!

Packaging

First let’s start off with what OtterBox gives you. The iconic black and yellow packaging showcases the Commuter, which in this case is the white and black variant, but also available in a handful of different color variations. When you take the Commuter out of the packing you flip open the back and included are a screen protector, screen wipe and an installation card to make sure you get all the bubbles out of the screen protector.

Design

Now with that aside, we can look at the case itself. The Commuter is actually made up of two separate pieces. The inside piece is of a black silicone which then is wrapped on the outside with a harder plastic piece covering most of the back with cutouts for the camera and LED flash, volume rocker and volume keys, along with a circular cutout to make sure the iconic Apple logo is still on display. Now mind you, it did take a little bit to get the plastic casing wrapped around the silicone case and have it fit how it was supposed to at first. The attached pieces for the ports caused a little trouble when putting it on and taking it off. The slim, yet protective design of the OtterBox Commuter is very well designed. The flow between the silicone and plastic cases feels very nice in the hand and adds very little bulk compared to other protective cases.

Accessibility

Because the Commuter covers all open buttons on the iPhone, it can be a hassle getting to some. We had no problems getting to the volume rocker to flick it up and down. It also gives ample room for the Verizon model that has the volume rocker slightly lowered down. The volume buttons being covered also offered no hassle; same goes for the 3.5mm headphone jack. We did think that it was a little harder to press the power button on and off compared to no case on. We also noticed no difference in pictures and flash with the case being on and off, so there is no interference from the circular cutouts. The biggest gripe we have with the silicone case covering the ports is the USB charging port. There is very minimal room to peel back the silicone piece, but once you peel it back and has the charger inserted, there seemed to be no problems with taking it out of the port afterwards.

Protection

The OtterBox Commuter has a slim profile, but that doesn’t take away the protection that it gives you. The silicone case is raised around the whole iPhone screen and is held in place by the plastic back casing on the center of both sides, as well as the top and bottom. On the back, the circular cutout on the Apple logo is raised so no hard surface will be in contact with the back glass. The camera is also well down inside of the case and does not allow any surface scratches to occur.

Pros

Gives protection all around, even for volume buttons, headphone jack and charging port
Doesn’t add much extra weight to the device
Minimal bulk added for protection offered

Cons

Unprotected silicone gets loose
Back plastic piece bends out of place easily
Power/Sleep button is harder to press with the case on

Wrap-up

The OtterBox Commuter Series case is very well designed and well executed. The slim profile gives you minimal bulk for the protection that it adds to your device and looks good doing so. If you’re in the market for a new case to your iPhone 4 and need the protection and don’t want an extremely heavy case, we can absolutely recommend the OtterBox Commuter. Review: id America cases for iPhone 4

We’ve said this many times in the past – protecting your electronics is always important. We’ve spent a week with some pretty fantastic cases from id America, and we’re here with our thoughts!

Gasket for iPhone 4

Gasket for iPhone 4 is a brushed aluminum case for the iPhone 4, and the unique design is immediately noticeable. As the name suggests, it’s inspired by the head gasket, found in high-performance cars. There’s no doubt – the design is really unique, and I personally think it looks fantastic.

In terms of cutouts for ports and buttons, we didn’t encounter any issues with the Gasket. There’s a large cutouts for everything – one cutout for your volume buttons and vibrate switch, one cutout for your headphone jack and power button, and one cutout for your speakers and 30-pin dock connector. Have a Verizon iPhone? Not a problem. The Gasket works with both AT&T and Verizon iPhones.

If you’re a fan of cars, you’ll definitely enjoy the design of the Gasket. Something that’s important to note is that the Gasket is a rather minimal case. It’s definitely not a deal breaker, but if you drop your phone a lot, it’s something to consider.

So, that’s the Gasket for iPhone 4. We love the design, and we’re pretty sure everyone will love it as well. If you don’t drop your phone a lot and you’re looking to turn heads with your phone, the Gasket is definitely the case for you.

Skyline for iPhone 4

The Skyline for iPhone 4 is completely different from the Gasket. The Skyline is made out of a specially stiffened thermoplastic polyurethane. Even with heavy usage, the case didn’t get looser, and we’re pretty satisfied with that. In terms of design, the Skyline has a nice perforated design on the back, and that’s about it.

There’s a large cutout for the volume buttons and vibrate switch – yes, the Skyline also works with both the Verizon and AT&T iPhones. There’s a cutout for the headphone jack/secondary mic, and they added a plastic button on top of the power button, which we like very much. On the bottom, there’s a large cutout for the speaker and 30-pin dock connector.

The Skyline is a form-fitting case, but it still offers a decent amount of scratch and drop protection. The lay-on-the-table design is always good to see, and the case ships with screen shields for the front AND the back.

So that’s the Skyline for iPhone 4. The perforated design is elegant but subtle, and it offers solid protection without adding that much bulk.

DryIce for iPhone 4

And finally, we’re going to take a look at the DryIce for iPhone 4. The DryIce is a hard shell case that’s finished with a matte texture. The DryIce is constructed with a form-fitting plastic, and it features a two-piece design.

To install the DryIce on your iPhone, place the back of the iPhone onto the back piece, then snap the top piece in. Simple. Unfortunately, it’s extremely difficult to remove the case. Incredibly difficult. A few minutes of trying (and slightly damaged case) later, we finally figured it out – sliding your fingernail along the connection points (starting from the bottom) does the trick. Again, it’s unnecessarily difficult to remove, and it’s extremely frustrating.

In terms of the cutouts, id America knocked it out of the park with this one. Like most of the cases out there, there’s one cutout for your volume buttons/vibrate switch, two cutouts for your headphone jack/power button, and one large cutout for the speakers and 30-pin dock connector. Unlike most cases, they reduced the width of the back piece so when you’re adjusting the volume, or hitting the power button, there isn’t a piece of plastic cutting into your fingers. It’s the little things.

A big concern with plastic cases is watermarking. Since the DryIce’s back plate has a matte finish, watermarking isn’t as obvious, unless you really squeeze the case against the phone.

So that’s the DryIce for iPhone 4. We were initially frustrated about how difficult it is to remove the case, but after we got the hang of that, we really loved the case. In fact, it’s probably our personal favorite among the three.

White iPhone 4 now in AT&T’s online system

Again, the unicorn device from Apple is popping up again. But this time now in AT&T’s Online Account Management System (OLAM), and is listed under ‘iPhone 4 – 16GB White’ and ‘iPhone 4 – 32GB White.’ Does this mean we’re finally gonna see this device go on sale after countless delays? Hopefully we’ll see something in the next couple months, but who’s really gonna jump into a 2 year contract when the next generation iPhone coming just a few months after?

Apple giving iPhone 4 multitouch gestures?

There has been talk about Apple getting rid of the home button on the next gen iPhone and using multitouch gestures instead. BGR has a couple screenshots of said options, and it’s looking real. Now, this is said to be an internal iPhone 4 in testing, so we have no idea how long this has been around, or if it has a home button or not. Do you think the next gen iPhone and iPad will utilize multitouch gestures instead of the traditional hardware home button? It’ll be interesting to say the least.

The Verizon iPhone. It’s here.

Verizon held a press conference in New York this morning, and they (along with Apple) announced the Verizon iPhone 4, which will be available early next month. According to Verizon’s Lowell McAdam, the talks about a CDMA iPhone began in 2008, and the phone has been in testing for an entire year that involved at least 1,000 prototypes.

The Verizon iPhone runs on Verizon’s 3G EV-DO network (no LTE or GSM roaming), so there’s no support for simultaneous voice and data on the device. According to Apple’s Tim Cook, they didn’t go with LTE because the first-generation LTE chips would force Apple to make some unwanted changes to the design, and customers wanted a Verizon iPhone right now. The hardware does feature a new antenna design, but that’s because CDMA requires a different configuration of the antennas. On the software side, the Verizon iPhone will ship with iOS 4.2.5, and it’s loaded with a new feature called “Personal Hotspot”. With the Verizon iPhone, you’re able to connect up to 5 devices and basically have the iPhone act as a wireless hotspot. It’s not anything new to the technology world, but it’s cool seeing it on an iPhone.

The Verizon iPhone goes on sale February 10th for new customers, and February 3rd for existing customers. The Verizon iPhone will come in two configurations: 16GB for $199, and 32GB for $299.

Forbes-Google Study On Untethered Executives

As the results of a recent Forbes and Google study show, the widening scope of smartphone use has made an impact on the way people conduct business. “The Untethered Executive: Business Information in the Age of Mobility” has revealed a sharp rise in smartphone use among executives, including facts like 28% of the 300 executives surveyed carry both a Blackberry and an iOS or Android device.

The increase in usage in the executive demographic has likely affected the development of more versatile smartphones. Last year, LG introduced the LG Expo, a Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with a pico projector attachment. The small size of the projector and outdated OS may have kept the Expo from becoming the main tool in executives’ toolboxes, but the availability of a pocket-sized pico shows that business users want to do more with their phones than just check business email and read MS Office documents.

Miso For Android

Aside from a delicious dashi soup, Miso is also a fabulous social check-in website with matching mobile apps available for iPhone, iPad, and Android. Like Foursquare, Miso creates a fun social networking environment around check-ins, but instead of checking into physical locations, users check into television shows and movies at any given time through their mobile phone or through Miso’s main website.

Since each show page is comment-enabled, I love starting conversations based around check-ins and earning badges! What’s a check-in service without cool badges, right? Based on the number of check-ins, users earn neat themed badges. For example, the other night I checked into Project Runway and finally earned a Fashionista badge. As an additional reward, Miso’s mobile app prompted me to check into The Fairy Job Mother premier that aired after Project Runway for a chance to win additional special badges and be entered in a contest for real world rewards. The mobile app also has an easily accessible, ever-growing list of possible badges available, and each badge includes a quirky description. One of my favorites is the Caped Crusader badge, which reads, “You know who’s a real hero? Hiro, from Heroes. That’s a hero… Also, Bono.” The best thing about Miso is the community aspect; die-hard fans or any show or movie can find, friend, and converse with each other. Apple iPad in Verizon Wireless stores starting today!

It’s happening. The Apple iPad is available in Verizon Wireless stores starting today! Verizon is offering the iPad in three bundles, all featuring a Wi-Fi iPad + a Verizon Wireless Mi-Fi Mobile Hotspot. Here’s the prices: $629.99 for the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad + Mi-Fi, $729.99 for the 32GB iPad + Mi-Fi, and $829.99 for the 64GB iPad + Mi-Fi. Verizon will also offer all three iPads on a stand-alone basis.

In terms data prices, Verizon will be offering three options: 1GB for $20 a month, 3GB for $35 a month, and 5GB will set you back $50 a month.

iResQ’s black-to-white iPhone 4 service!

Hate Steve Jobs for not releasing the white iPhone 4 at launch? Me too. Well, thanks to the amazing folks at iResQ, it’s possible to get a white iPhone.

Wait, what?

You didn’t read it wrong, if you currently own a black iPhone 4, you can send your phone off to iResQ, and they’ll transform your black iPhone 4 into a beautiful white iPhone 4. The parts for the white iPhone are OEM parts, and their fit and finish is just like the black parts that shipped with your iPhone. There’s speculation that the white OEM parts were actually created by Foxconn (the folks that make the iPhones for Apple), but Apple decided to scrap them last minute for whatever reason. But, you don’t have a reason to worry, the white parts are amazingly precise, and pretty much identical to the official black parts.

iResQ has a team of professionals that’ll swap out the black parts for the white ones. If something were to go wrong during the installation of the white parts, iResQ will cover for damage, but their installation process is precise, and there has only been a very small numbers of issues.

Obviously, adding third-party parts to your iPhone does void your Apple warranty, but the parts that iResQ installs do have a 90-day warranty, so if the parts are defected or they fail on their own, iResQ does cover that, but if you drop it and shatter it, or spill liquid and destroy the parts, iResQ’s warranty won’t cover that — similar to AppleCare.

However, if your black parts are in flawless condition (the technician at iResQ will give you a quote) then you can sell your black parts to iResQ for $180, so the service comes to a grand total of $69 + shipping. That’s a freaking good deal.

Introducing Catch.

I’m a huge notes and pictures guy, and I write notes and save random pictures that I probably won’t ever need. That’s why I’m totally in love with Catch. You may know the team over at Catch, as they were formerly known as Snaptic. They recently (read: yesterday) rebranded themselves as Catch, which is a service I’ve been wanting for quite a while.

What’s Catch? As they claim, it’s a way to simplify your life. Catch is the one place to collect what really matters to you. With Catch, you can save everything, whether it be pictures, notes, or locations. And that information is always with you. In addition to their web client which is compatible with both a Mac and a PC, they also have an Android, iPhone, and iPad app (the app was formerly known as 3banana, in case you were curious.)
