Apple began to lay out its $2.2 billion damages claim against Samsung Electronics for the first time on Tuesday, arguing to an eight-person jury in California that Samsung's alleged patent infringement was large and significantly damaged Apple.

Apple is demanding the money for lost sales and royalties it says it suffered as a result of Samsung's sale of more than 37 million smartphones and tablets between August 2011 and the end of 2013, the company told the court.

China is requiring Microsoft and Nokia to make promises on fair patent use, fearing that the proposed acquisition between the two companies could spell trouble for the nation's Android device makers.

On Tuesday, China's Ministry of Commerce gave conditional regulatory approval to Microsoft's purchase of Nokia's Devices & Services business. The $7.2 billion deal means that Microsoft could very soon produce its own smartphones using the Windows Phone operating system.

Microsoft, which is far behind Apple and Google in the smartphone market, has introduced a number of security features in Windows Phone that are not groundbreaking, but necessary to attract businesses.

The improvements are part of Windows Phone 8.1, which Microsoft executives unveiled Wednesday during the opening keynote of the Build developer conference in San Francisco.

Blocking and throttling Internet traffic will become illegal in the European Union following a parliamentary vote today.

Members of the European Parliament voted to close loopholes in a proposed law that some believed would have created a two-tier Internet. The so-called Telecoms Package originally described "specialized services," which would have allowed Internet service providers to charge more for more data-intensive content services such as voice over IP and streaming video.
