I won't because I want to get right to our feature presentation: VintageGayLoops-dot-com.

The site is part of an expanding cottage industry - along with the absolutely amazing work of Bob Mizer on Athletic Model Guild - that has had the good sense to preserve some of the earliest reels of gay sex which, disappointingly, means it's also almost exclusively white.

Nonetheless, it's hard for an entire generation weaned on webcams, sexting and free pornographic content 24/7 to fully appreciate just how daring and risque early gay porn was, but it was. And in equal measure. And on Vintage Gay Porn, bloggers David Stidler and Rick Wood elaborate not only on the struggles but the celebrations that entwine gay porn and gay liberation. The whole history of the modern gay rights movement actually begins in the Vintage Gay Porn vaults and a site like theirs is not only required viewing for anyone interested in this industry but it's pretty groovy, too.

So far, there's 33 hardcore vignettes each of considerable length (given how expensive film and processing were) and we're lucky that the team at VintageGayLoops.com had dedicated themselves to bringing this into the public domain. Now, where is the person responsible for all the early reels of men of color? That's a site waiting to happen.
I’m a Mainer and I’ve got to say that I’m tired of voting on this issue. My perspective is that this referendum item is directed at dividing the state, which it nicely accomplished. I voted “no” in hopes that it would settle the issue once and for all. Unfortunately, the law was overturned and it looks like this resolution is going to come back again, which means another opportunity for the forces that be to divide this state. It’s weird because I’m used to a more Canadian style of politics up here where the last thing wanted is division. In my opinion,

that Maine is probably an unlikely place for this issue to germinate. My sense is that it has a significant Catholic presence, and the Catholic Church was a driver of the effort to overturn. For what it’s worth, the leader of the “no” campaign - Connolly - was brought up Catholic. Worth noting is - and it’s not picking up as much press as it should I think - is that Maine rejected - for the SECOND time - a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and approved a $30 million highway bond. So, this should give folks from away the sense for how Maine is socially conservative - by rejecting gay marriage - and fiscally progressive. - by rejecting TABOR (again) and approving public spending on highways. Reverse of the modern GOP? Oh, and we also expanded by a 2:1 vote expanding our medical marijuna law. What do the “tea leaves” and the pundits have to say about that?

"Writing from rural Maine–Somerset County, which has been abandoned for the second time by the gay rights campaign here in Maine–William Jefferson Jr. has it right. All the blogs miss the point–as did this campaign, and in the same way as this campaign. My sources now confirm that a deliberate decision was made–in Portland–to avoid rural Maine with this campaign. Here’s why I knew this decision had been made, again, even before it was confirmed for me, and how I knew that we would lose again. Driving the roads of rural Maine, as I do in both my private and work life, the “YES ON 1″

signs out numbered the “NO ON 1″ signs 10, 20 to one, depending on the town or stretch of road. The NO signs were, and appeared to be, mere tokens. When I called the Portland headquarters to find out how to get “NO” road signs, the closest location–that I was told I had to drive to myself to have any chance of getting any, was 40 miles, but I had to call first. The number I was given was a 212 area code cell phone (thanks New York!) which never answered or called back over the ten days before the election. My friend who called Portland was given a 417 area code cell phone number (thanks San Francisco!) which never answered or called back either. I’m appreciative of the national support. This is a national issue. A fundamental human rights issue. But, like William Jefferson said so well. Your help can’t cluster in the urban areas, control the resources and the strategy in a place you don’t know, and be surprised–for the second time–about the outcome. We need your intelligence, determination and passion. Your ignorance–your militant ignorance–does not help."

And I appreciate you correcting me. I really do. Looking back over the last two months or so, perhaps further back, I've noticed I have been a little lazy. And while it's no excuse, there's an immediacy to blogging that, coupled with my natural impatience, makes for sometimes rugged going on this site. I debated whether or not to even bring this up but I think it's important. It tells me you care, if not for me, than for others who enjoy reading what I write but may be bothered, distracted or mislead by the use of "one" for "won," for example. Or misspelling Nate Silver's name as Nate Silverman. Furthermore, for any of you that write, you understand how significant an omitted comma, period or sets of quotations can mean to the fundamental meaning of a sentence. And if you can't trust a writer to get it right than it defeats the whole point of even reading their work. So, again, for those of you who point out what needs pointing out, thank you. I'd be crushed if I thought you weren't listening.

After watching the first nine-or-so minutes of the here! program Exploration: "The Art of Persuasion: Straight and Bisexual Men in Gay Porn," I realized how little I truly knew about gay porn. But thanks to the unsung heroes at the gayer of the two gay cable channels (Exclamation points? Gaaay!), I now have certain facts at my disposal that make the gay porn experience that much richer. For example, according to TAOP: SABMIGP,

"Gay Porn performers are usually categorized as being either "tops" or "bottoms". The "top" usually assumes the dominant role and performs the act of penetration."

Huh.

Also, director Wash West tells us that 25 to 30 percent of gay porn performers are straight. For the other 70 to 75 percent, there's Cialis.

We learn also on TAOP: SABMIGP that Brett Drysdale (Now that's a porn name!), marketing director for Jet Set Productions, does not like knowing if the straight guy he's having sex with is completely repulsed by what he's doing. "It blows the fantasy." (Coincidentally, probably all it would blow if "it" were repulsed.)

Most shockingly, I learned from porn performer Chad Hunt that someone he knows (which would make that three degrees of separation since I don't know Chad Hunt personally but I do know someone who does) was offered 20K dollars for the role of "bottom" in the upcoming gay porn megafeature: "Artificially Inflated Pay Schedules: Cocks on Fire."

You can learn all that and much, much more if you watch TAOP:SABMIGP. So be sure to check it out either here or here on here! (Hey, not to look a gift documentary in the eye, but how come they didn't interview "Mr. Sexualist" himself, Wolf Hudson? He'd certainly lend some color.)

(Via: Queer Me Now who, by the way and in a completely unrelated matter, would unequivocally deserve a win in the 'Best Gay Porn Blog' Category for this year's Cybersocket Awards. Talk about one of the hardest working men in show business!)

Not much. We lost in Maine for any number of reasons. The state is poorer than the rest of the region (based on income alone, Maine is not only lower than the U.S. average, but has the lowest average income of any state in the New England Region at about 45K per year). Poorer people tend to be less educated. Less educated people tend not to believe in gay marriage. The state is rural. Maine has 41.3 people per square mile making it the 38th least crowded state in the country. When you're not exposed to a lot of people, you're not exposed to a lot of people's ideas. The state is quite Catholic. 37% of Mainers identify themselves as Catholic , one of the largest affiliations in the nation. The Catholic church generally frowns upon gay marriage. And, finally, about half their population is 45 or older. Older people tend to vote against gay marriage (but apparently not against medical marijuana.)

The bottom line is this: Our country just isn't ready to accept gay marriage as a whole. Take heart, though. Think about how far we've come, even in the last ten years. And think about all the victories we did achieve yesterday: Our gay and lesbian candidates won city council seats in St. Petersburg, Florida (a first), Akron, Ohio (another first), Detroit (a first not only for a gay man but for a black man, too), somewhere in Minnesota (still another first), and in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where an openly gay man has just been elected as their mayor. In Houston, lesbian Annise Parker was the highest vote getter in a three-way race for mayor and will be in a two-way runoff next month. Kalamazoo, Michigan passed a citywide anti-gay discrimination ordinance and things are looking pretty good in Washington State. Remember, progress is never easily achieved. We will achieve full equality in this country. Onward...
