We are glad to present another successful exterior wall cladding project with Moca Cream limestone. This time, the project is located in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates, where the high sun exposure and setting has allowed this fantastic final result.

This new project involved the supply of about 3.000m2 of exterior wall cladding, using the Portuguese beige limestone Moca Cream. The cladding had different elevations and a very large surrounding compound wall, pretty much all covered with the unique Moca Cream limestone. The supply included just one size of 80x40cm, whereas specific cutting was done on site. The beautiful light beige color, delicate vein and consistent color were the highlights of this project.

The Moca Cream limestone is competitive in terms of price, abundant in terms of supply and presents a unique vein that does wonderful jobs in exterior cladding application, like no other limestone. For these reasons, we see an exponential growth in demand for this limestone for cladding projects of private villas, in particular in GCC countries.

Qatar has been an incredible market for the supply of Portuguese Moca Cream limestone, mostly used on exterior cladding applications of private residences, as well as some commercial buildings and other applications.

Since the Qatar Embassy project in Brussels, which involved the supply of considerable amounts of Moca Cream limestone for all its exterior and interior applications, that we have seen an increase of demand of the beautiful Moca Cream limestone in the Qatar market. 

Today, we can find numerous examples of mostly residential cladding projects done with this type of limestone, where the parallel vein is much appreciated on both traditional and modern architecture. Traditionally, beige/sandy colored limestones are very appreciated in Qatar for exterior applications like cladding. Historically, supplied with limestone from Palestine, Egypt or even Jordan, residencial cladding projects in Qatar have seen an increase in demand for newer types of limestone like the Moca Cream. The Qatar Embassy compound in Brussels – Belgium, has become a reference project, known for its extensive use of a single natural stone to cover pretty much all kinds of exterior and interior applications: the Moca Cream limestone. 

Designed by the renowned Belgian architect Jaspers-Eyes Architects, the Qatar Embassy project in Brussels is an impressive building, entirely covered with Moca Cream limestone. The limestone was extensively used on diverse exterior applications, such as cladding, masonry and some wall coverings, but specially on interior applications such as flooring, wall coverings, columns, staircases, bath decoration and more. The idea of the project was to cover it entirely with this wonderful, which is today a reference beige limestone in Qatar. After its completion in 2014, the project was awarded with the FEBE Outstanding Precast Award.

The final result is a beautiful and elegant building on the exterior and quite a magnificent decoration on all the interiors, particularly in the main hall.

The Moca Cream and the Moleanos are the two most important beige colored limestones from Portugal and there is normally some confusion about which limestone is which, what are the main differences between them, what are its main characteristics, which leads to a final choice.

We make here a brief comparison between both limestones, on an attempt to demystify any doubts that people may have about these two beautiful Portuguese beige colored limestones.

Limestone comparison

Both Moca Cream and Moleanos are beige colored limestone that are extracted in the central part of Portugal, at the main limestone extraction area in the country. Technically these two limestones share a similar history and composition background, with its extraction areas being only separated by not more than 20 kilometers.

Despite these common points, there are three main factors that distinguish both limestones from each other:

– Appearance: while the Moleanos is characterized by its fairly uniform beige colored background (with some presence of fossils), the Moca Cream main characteristic is its uniform parallel vein and beige colored background.

– Technical properties: the Moleanos limestone is a fairly harder type of limestone, being commonly used in distinct flooring applications. This is not the case with the Moca Cream, which does not have such hardness, being mostly used in coverings and cladding applications.

– Variations: this is perhaps one of the points where these limestone diverge the most. While the Moleanos present some blue color variations in relation to the beige color, the Moca Cream can have variations as cross cut or vein cut.

Alternative limestones?

Despite these evident differences, can we consider the Moleanos an alternative to the Moca Cream limestone, and vice-versa? In many cases yes.

These two limestones have few things in common, where it is possible to find the exact type of variation that match the other limestone. For example, on the picture below, you can see how visually similar the Moca Cream fine grain cross cut is in relation to the Moleanos fine grain. We see that the Moca Cream presents a shadow structure with some dispersed grain, while the Moleanos presents a more uniform grain background. However, if we present both limestones with a honed finishing, it will be fairly hard to tell the difference.

This is a good example on how these two limestones can be alternatives to each other. They are technically different, but if we are trying to match appearance, it is possible to find a result.

But despite any possible attempts in trying to present these limestones as direct competitors and alternatives, the reality is that they are fairly different limestones that often cater to different market segments and projects. And they will both continue to have their own individual identity as reference beige limestones.

The Nedbank head-quarters building located in Cape Town is an impressive building that includes multi-level and multi-building complex. The material selected for all its interior and exterior wall cladding was Moca Cream limestone.

The Nedbank HQ project was a massive project involving the supply of over 46.000 m2 of 40mm cladding panels with Moca Cream limestone from Portugal. The limestone was used for both exterior wall cladding as well as interior wall cladding of the HQ of a large South African bank: the Nedbank. The Moca Cream limestone was supplied with medium grain and uniform parallel vein, as well as a honed surface.

The result was an imposing building exterior façade that represents well the durability, strength and solid structure that this reference bank wanted to display.
