22 Days and Four Years Later!

Wow, has it really been four years since I've had anything to share? Actually that's not true, I've just been way to busy! In the past four years I have been exploring various techniques in my jewelry making along with finding my own voice as an artist... It has been an incredible journey through glass, metal, paint and found objects. But now, February 5, 2012, it feels as though it's all coming together. The pieces I have been creating lately incorporate all of my passions with great results!

The true constant in my work has always been color and the need to use ALOT of it! I have been branching out a bit, toward painting functional home decor along with painting on mini wood panels.
Today I am going to share my step by step progress on my latest piece of work, and I'll update as I go.

Twenty Days and Four Oxygen Tanks Later...

I finally have some finished pieces to share! Lampworking is not like riding a bike. I expected to be able to light my torch and just get right back into it, but that has not been the case. After burning four tanks of oxygen, loads of glass, lots of time and a couple of fingers (tried to pick up a piece of HOT glass, duh, such a newbie mistake) I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

Although I have much more work to do to perfect the techniques, I'm thrilled with my progress so far.

I'm Making Lampwork Glass Beads

Finally! It has been a long road to get here but I am thrilled to say that I am finally making glass beads in my own home studio!

I was a newbie four years ago when I took my first classes in lampworking and then life happened. We moved away and I needed to put this dream on the backburner for awhile... But believe me, once "kissed by the flame" you never forget. Well, with much thanks to my DH (darling husband) Tim, I have been given the opportunity to pursue the dream of making my own lampwork glass for my jewelry designs. In many ways I'm starting from scratch. At the studio where I learned, they handled hooking up all the equipment, torch cleaning, ensuring the kiln was at the right temperature to anneal and refilling the propane and oxygen tanks, even cleaning the beads sometimes when you were in the studio for torch time... Ahhhhh, those were the days! Here's a brief recap of my first week along with pictures.

Day One - I consider this day to be a comical disaster! It is the day where I learned many of the lessons about what NOT to do and spent alot of time getting to know my torch. When you're melting glass around a mandrel it really needs to be in the right part of the flame so the glass can flow easily. The flame, glass, mandrel and your movement all become one and when it's right you can just feel it! I set out with a lofty goal to make 20 beads on my first day, hahahahahaha! Here is a picture of what I got! I know it's not perfectly round but I will cherish this one bead forever! I've nicknamed it Persistence as a reminder to just keep going and push through the mistakes. This was a lessons learned day that I had to go through to get to the next step. Glad it's over...

Day Two and Onward - After day one, I was over my fear of lighting the torch and stressing that my hoses were hooked up properly and was really ready to start practicing making beads. Now remember, I have had three hands - on classes and practice torch time, but that was four years ago and not my own equipment but a good basic foundation to work from. Here are some pics of my progress -

I've got alot of work to do but I'm pretty pleased with the results from my first week.

On a final note, I want to thank Corina Tettinger for writing the book Passing the Flame, I have read it cover to cover twice and have used it countless times as a reference for what I'm doing wrong, not to mention all of the inside tips and tricks she shares, and that's just in the first week! This book has been invaluable in helping me to ramp up quickly and will never be far from my side in the studio! Thanks again Corina and I hope that one day I will get the opportunity to thank you in person. Gotta run now, off for more torch time and practice, practice, practice!

The next art show featuring the EDGE artists at El Yunque will be February 28 - March 2 from 9 - 5 daily at El Portal Visitors Center located at the main entrance to the rainforest. If you're in the area stop by and say hi, we'd love to meet you!

In other news, I'm still waiting for my lampwork glass torch!!!!!!!!! The company that we ordered from sent me the wrong one and of course, the one we ordered is now on BACK ORDER! I have been so excited to make glass again and anxious to get back to making my Gypsy Sol charm bracelets so I dug up some of the lampwork I already had and made this, I call her Princessa. Making these bracelets is a great excercise in patience which I really need right now...

Hi All and Happy New Year or should I say Prospero Ano Nuevo! 2007 was an incredible year for me with many lessons learned and much growth both personally and professionally.

One of my big resolutions for 2008 is to blog and share more about Puerto Rico and what it's like living here. Over this next year I will be posting more often and sharing little snipets of daily life, both the good and the bad! On occasion, I may share an opinion that you may not agree with and I welcome your comments but please be civil, I will respect your opinion if you do the same, otherwise I will remove your comment.

My other major resolution for 2008 is the continued growth of my art. I am so lucky to be able to have the time to persue this path full time and I have already grown and learned so much over this past year. First on the list is getting my torch and kiln set up! Yep, that's right! I got a torch and kiln for Christmas so that I can get back to my first love in jewelry making, lampwork glass. The studio in the garage is all ready to go (much thanks to Tim for setting it up) just waiting for the darn UPS driver to deliver them. The beads in the bracelet on the right are an example of beads I made in 2004 while attending classes at Cave Creek Glassworks given by Marcia Kmack in Cave Creek, AZ. She is such a great teacher! I miss going there for open torch time and learning and sharing with others, not to mention the margaritas afterword at Harold's! Oh how I wish there was a place like that here in Puerto Rico...

Island Time

Wow, how time flies! This summer has been very busy as we've continued to adapt to island life. Considering that Tim and I are originally from Arizona, where the biggest weather threat is dust storms and flash flooding, we spent a little extra time and money in putting our emergency hurricane plans in order. We were ready just in time for Dean! Lucky for us, he passed us by with barely a whimper and only a few drops of rain.

We've also been taking advantage of our free time by getting to know the area beaches and seeking out good snorkeling spots (always looking for that elusive sea turtle). We found a great area in Luquillo that has many coral reefs and we love going there on the weekends to explore. Naturally, these trips have provided me with a great deal of inspiration and it's being reflected in my work. I have opened a second Etsy store, The Floral Reef, which is now home for all of my whimsical, island inspired designs. Here is a sampling of some of the new items:

On Friday, June 29th I was fortunate enough to participate in a great event, Art Night at El Yunque. With the sounds of the coqui frogs off in the distance, the event took place at El Portal in the Caribbean Rainforest, El Yunque. Sponsored by the US Forest Service the evening included dining, dancing, drinking and art, all under a big bright full moon. These are some pictures from the event.

All things aqua! It is such a soothing color! This week's featured Etsy artist designs are breezy and summery, just like the cool Caribbean waters. I've included a picture taken at Flamenco Beach, located on Culebra in the Spanish Virgin Islands just off the coast of Puerto Rico. We are looking forward to going snorkeling there soon. They say that the visibility can be 40 - 70 feet and you can sometimes spot sea turtles over there... I'll keep you posted. Enjoy!

Flamenco Beach, Culebra, PR

There are several ways to get over to Culebra Island. Last time we went we took the public ferry and at $5 round trip it's a bargain. They do charge extra though for coolers, oversized bags and beach chairs, but it still beats the airfare rates. Plus, the ferry ride over is part of the fun.

I love my PETS! They bring so much joy and happiness to my life that I couldn't imagine not having them around. My puppy Gonzo makes sure I get out of the house every day for walks and my cat Maya keeps me in check and makes sure I remember who's boss, especially at feeding time. They love routine and hate shoes. Recently I came across an article in Good Housekeeping about common household items that can be dangerous to your pets. A few of them I was aware of but others surprised me. In love of pets everywhere, I thought I would share them along with a few Etsy finds for those special, super pampered pets. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Enjoy.

Items That Can Harm Your Pets -

These are excerpts from Good Housekeeping magazine, June 2007 edition, written by Hallie Levine Sklar. To access the complete article go to www.goodhousekeeping.com.

1. Lilies - Yes, the beautiful flowers can be lethal to your cats. Ingesting even small amounts can cause kidney damage.

2. Onions and Garlic - They contain disulfides, sulfer compounds that can cause gastrointestinal irritation to pets and harm their red blood cells. Also consider foods that have been cooked with lots of garlic and onion like meatballs and chopped liver.

3. Grapes and Raisins - This one was a shocker to me since I used to feed my beagle Tootie grapes all the time! But beware, they can cause severe gastrointestinal problems and even kidney failure.

4. Macadamia Nuts - The nuts contain an unknown toxin that will make them very sick.

5. Pine Oil Based Cleaners - They contain phenol and can cause severe liver damage to your cats. Even in tiny amounts like licking their wet paws.

6. Sugar Substitutes - The one to look out for is called Xylitol and it is used in sugar free candy, gum, toothpastes and baked goods. It can cause low blood sugar and liver damage and it doesn't take much. The article quotes a study that says a 22 lb. dog that ingests even just a gram of xylitol should be treated by a vet.

What do you think of when you hear the word enchantment? For me it evokes images of dark forests, faeries, magical creatures and Puerto Rico, the island's nickname is Isla Del Encanto, Island of Enchantment. Last weekend I got a little glimpse of that enchantment. While hiking in El Yunque Rainforest in the late afternoon we turned a bend and the path in front of us was illuminated, just like I would imagine a magic forest, I've included the picture for you all to see. This week I received an email from a fellow artist here in Puerto Rico sharing photos of the most amazing life size scultures of Paso Fino horses made completely out of driftwood found on the beach! Unfortunately I can't get the photos to load on to the blog, but I promise to keep working on it to share with you. This week I picked a few other visionary artists that work with found objects and recyclables and turn them into something extraordinary! I have recently started working with bamboo that I found at the beach. The wood is so pliable and easy to shape, I just love it.

Speaking of the beach... A few weeks ago I featured turtles! Well, the leatherback turtles are finally hatching here. I've included a special photo of the found babies on their journey to be released. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Baby Leatherback Turtles

These little guys have just hatched and measure between 2-3 inches long with their front flipper about one and a half times the length of their body. They hatched on the beach by the Wyhdam Rio Mar Resort (NE end of Puerto Rico) and were collected by a biologist from the DNPR. They collect them right after hatching in order to supervise their release at dusk in order to give them the best chance for survival. When leatherback turtles become fully grown, they can be as long as 8 feet with a flipper span of 17 feet. Wow, truly a miraculous creature!

I love turtles! There is something so majestic about them, their slow pace and graceful movement. I'm still waiting for the first time I get to see one up close while snorkeling... Last Saturday I participated in the Festival de Tinglar (Turtle Festival) in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. It was sponsored by the local chapter of the Sierra Club and I had a chance to meet so many cool and like - minded people, besides getting a chance to show my jewelry. What a fun day! Food, drink, lots of artists and the constant rythym of bomba and salsa music. This week I've selected other artists that must love turtles too since they've prominently displayed them on everything from cool coin purses to baby bibs. Enjoy!

Change... the only constant in life! Lately it seems that I'm living my life in beta mode. Learning all about blogging, creating a home on My Space, designing banners and avatars in Photoshop, etc. Learning new things can sometimes be overwhelming but well worth it in order to reach out and share with others. I'm stepping outside of the box again and mixing it up a bit. I come across so many cool artists that I want to share, so I'm going to start publishing MoCo Cafe as new things come my way instead of just once a week. Remember, change is good! I have been searching for a killer enchilada sauce recipe ever since we moved to Pueto Rico. Well, I've found it! I made a few changes to "spice" it up a bit and it's the BEST, super fast and easy too!

Ingredients:
1 large onion, diced
2 T olive oil
1/4 C flour
1 T garlic powder
3 T GOOD red chile powder
1 t marjoram
1 t oregano
1 t cumin
1 1/2 T chicken bouillon
4 C water

Directions:

Saute onion in olive oil until transparent. Add flour to onions until coated. Add all remaining ingredients and whisk until thickened. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring frequently. Sauce will have a gravy consistency and is perfect for enchiladas or over steaks. Can be kept in the refrigerator for days, or frozen.

This three piece pendant is like music to my eyes! I love its movement and flow. It's a lovely piece that makes a bold statement. The pendant is fashioned from polymer clay, metallic leaf and metallic paints. Copper colored wire embellishments provide the finishing accents. An acrylic liquid was applied as the final layer to seal and protect the piece. The back of the pendant is made with black clay and has a subtly textured surface. "Tomorrow at Three Dimensions"; An original from EarthArt - $109

24 x 43 Abstract sun in bronze, three shades of gold, two shades of copper, brown and silver. Very dynamic and light shifting. Natural aluminum is left exposed in parts of the heart of the sun. Medium gauge aluminum is affixed to a wooden base and connected with strong gauge hoops. It floats off the wall slightly for fantastic dimension. Sealed with a protective coating for the protection of this art. The top bar is a piece of poplar that is routed to have smooth edges, sanded, painted then coated with sealant. Recipe- Copper Pennies (Pickled Carrots)

5 cups carrots (about 2 lbs.)sliced and parboiled
1 small bell pepper, sliced into rings
1 small onion, sliced into rings
1 (10 oz.) can condensed tomato soup
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup cider vinegar
1 Tbl. worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper

Directions:Par-boil carrots until crisp-tender. Drain carrots and let cool. Combine all other ingredients in large bowl and add carrots. Toss well to coat. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours stirring several times. This will keep for at least 4 - 5 days (if it lasts that long!). The longer it sits in the refrigerator, the better it tastes.

Recipe- Oh, So Decadent Cream Cheese and Chocolate Truffles

INGREDIENTS:
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips, melted
1 1/2 tsp of vanilla or *(see note for adding liqueurs)

In a large bowl beat the cream cheese until smooth and gradually add the confectioner's sugar until well blended. Stir in melted chocolate and vanilla and again blend well. *If you'd like to flavor your truffles with liqueurs simply omit the vanilla, divide the mixed truffle mixture into thirds and remix each with your favorite flavor- mine would be Chambord, Grand Marnier and Frangelico. Once blended place the mix in the refrigerator for about an hour and then shape into one inch balls. Now you can decorate your truffles if you like by rolling them in nuts, coconut, cocoa powder, or my favorite smashed chocolate covered espresso beans. YUM!

Drink- Decadent Chocolate Martini

Perfect to serve with your truffles or on it's own for a heavenly dessert. Start by taking two long stemmed martini glasses and drizzle chocolate sauce in glasses from the bottom to the top creating a swirl pattern. Place martini glasses in the freezer for one hour to harden the chocolate.When you're ready to serve combine 1/3C Godiva chocolate liqueur, 1/3 C dark creme de cacao liqueur, 1/3 C half and half and 1/4 C vodka. Blend well over ice and strain into your frosty chocolate coated martini glasses. Serves two but you may have some leftovers... Garnish with a fresh strawberry if you like.

My least favorite subject in school, geometry, has now become one of my favorite design elements... Each of the five artists featured this week have certainly mastered it! The Kitchen Work Triangle- The concept for the kitchen work triangle was developed by the Small Homes Council of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois in the 1950's. An invisible "work triangle" is created in the kitchen by the arrangement of the sink, stove and refrigerator. The placement of these three elements in relation to each other is intrinsically connected to designing an efficient kitchen. All of the elements in the Triangle need to be close together to keep movement in the workspace to a minimum. Keeping the triangle tight also limits unwanted traffic from passing through your work space. Recipe- Charlie Palmer's Filet of Beef Tea Sandwiches with Roquefort & Walnut Crust

Ingredients:
2 cups California walnut pieces
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 tsp chili oil or pepper
1 tsp orange zest, grated
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp garlic salt
3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
2 cups Roquefort cheese, crumbled
1 tbsp Armagnac (French brandy)
18 slices white sandwich bread, thinly sliced
1 lb. filet of beef, medium-rare, thinly sliced
2 cups watercress leaves
Directions:
Toast walnuts in shallow baking pan in preheated 300°F oven about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until aromatic. While nuts are toasting, continue as below.
Melt 1/4 cup butter in small skillet over low heat. Stir in chili oil, orange zest, cayenne and garlic salt. Cook gently about 3 minutes, stirring to combine. Pour mixture over hot nuts and stir to coat. Return nuts to oven 20 minutes more, stirring occasionally. Remove nuts with skimmer and transfer to paper toweling to drain 10 minutes. Transfer to clean paper toweling and drain 10 minutes more. In food processor, chop nuts coarsely. Remove 1 cup and set aside. Process nuts remaining in food processor in on-off flicks until finely chopped; transfer to shallow dish and set aside for finishing sandwiches. In same food processor, place softened butter, cheese and Armagnac. Process to combine. Add reserved 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts and process until finely chopped but not pureed. You will have 1 1/2 cups walnut-cheese mixture.
To assemble sandwiches: Spread very thin layer of walnut-cheese mixture on 6 slices of bread. Cover with layer of beef and then a layer of watercress leaves. Place another slice of bread on top, spread with very thin layer of walnut-cheese mixture, cover with layer of beef and layer of watercress leaves. Top each sandwich with a third slice of bread and press down firmly. You will have 6 whole sandwiches.
With long, sharp knife, trim off crusts. Cut each whole sandwich diagonally into quarters, thus making triangles.
Spread edges of each triangle very lightly with remaining walnut-chesse mixture, then dip sides into reserved finely ground walnuts to finish. Cover tightly and refrigerate until serving. Serves 12.

DRINKS

Purple Passion Martini

1 part vodka

1 part Chambord (raspberry liquer)

2 parts soda water

Shake and strain over ice and serve in a chilled martini glass.

Purple Cow Milkshake

1 C grape soda

2 C premium vanilla ice cream

1 T vanilla extract

1 C milk

Ice cubes

Place in a blender and blend. Serve in your favorite glasses and top with an oreo cookie for a special treat. Serves 4
