Android Proof of Concept Player

Scener 'sasq' has released a proof of concept module player for the Android mobile platform, today I tested it on my G1 and was so far pleased with the results and happy that there is a module player for it at last!.

It's very rudimentary at the moment (obviously) but I've prodded the developer to hopefully continue adding to this player. More info here

Nitrotracker Compo: 31 day challange

Hello all Nitrotracker users! I am going to be starting a 31 day challenge in which I will make (or try to make) and submit a song every day for the month of July, using only Nitrotracker and any samples that will work in Nitro (recorded and vocal samples included).

Demoparty season is at hand, and lots of parties are up and coming for anyone who want's to enjoy the demoscene and maybe even participate by releasing music/graphics/photos/demos/invites and so on.

I recently got back from Outline 2009 which was absolutlely awesome, and I even produced a little expose-fun video of a tiny fraction of the party atmosphere. You can catch it HERE!

Sundown - United Kingdom

I will try and attend more but as it happens work and money don't permit that much flexibility at the moment!

Welcome to TMA Version 4!

Now that the 'minor' scheduled maintenance is complete, I'd like to welcome you to the newest incarnation of The Mod Archive. For a quick run-down of what's new (other than the brand spanking new layout) check out the what's new page.

This has been about two months in the (re)making, and a heck of a lot of work. I would also like to extend my thanks to Saga Musix, Jojo, whom has been a core shoulder of support for the entire duration of the project. As well as being there to bounce ideas off, he has also provided some of the know-how to get fiddly design code working.

I am totally exhausted, and I've been dreading this moment - will it work? won't it? why did my LAN fail during the key moment of transferring? (seriously, that really had me screaming at my screen, my wife will vouch for that!). Well anyway, it's here and working (as far as I can tell) so I hope you all enjoy the new website and will consider giving us a shout on the forums or even on my shoutwall

By the way, a word of caution: clear or delete your cookies for modarchive.org, you might have some odd logging in problems and/or menu discrepancies if you have an old cookie in your cache.

Maintenance night

On 31st March the site will be unavailable for a few hours due to some minor maintenance work that needs to be carried out.

This means that the site and forums will be off from 22:00hrs CET on 31st March.

There is a countdown below the search box on the site showing the time remaining until the site is shut off.

I've been working on a new version of The Mod Archive, just thought I'd mention that since things seem to be quiet around here (I can assure you, they are not quiet by any definition of the word). It's a redesign of the front end from the ground up, keep an eye on the forums for teaser shots if that sort of thing floats your boat.

Creative Commons Licenses (repost)

This news item applies only to members whom hold artist accounts.

It's time to publicly announce the little feature that has been added upon request to the area for artists: Creative Commons Licenses!

By default, your uploaded works are already under the license agreement of The Mod Archive for redistribution purposes, but this does not assist with identifying potential candidates for third party use. So, by attributing a Creative Commons (or alternative) license to your material, you will be able to indicate to third parties (such as game developers, students etc... basically anyone who's browsing your stuff) that they can make use of your material, in accordance to the license that you select.

You will find the license settings under your Artist sub-menu My Modules.

For regular visitors to The Mod Archive, an additional item on the individual module information pages have been added that indicates the license associated with the module.

Breakpoint Demoparty in crisis

An urgent message from the Breakpoint organisers:

It's the year 2009. While the global economy is celebrating its overly dramatic suicide, governments around the world build up a wall of fear to protect against an uprising of their own people. The thunder of the collapsing credit economy drowns out the sound of the hectic attempts to dismantle the values and freedoms once gained at great cost - creating a safe distance to those who have yet to realize their losses.

It's hard times for the demoscene, an international group of young technology-focused artists.

Breakpoint, world's biggest family meeting for programmers, musicians and artists, always tried to be a bridge between the committed demosceners and the outside world, the IT industry and the electronic art scene. A bridge that now seems to lead into a dark abyss.

Breakpoint is facing its biggest challenge so far: In January 2009, our former main sponsors announced their quarterly financial statements for the Q4 2008. The repercussions of the global financial crisis now hit the demoscene with full force: our main sponsors won't be able to support Breakpoint 2009.

We're missing over half of our party budget, mere weeks before the party is about to start.

What first looked like the end of Breakpoint may well turn out to be its finest hour. In the last few days, all kinds of sceners in the know made perfectly clear that they're not going to let this party perish. We ask the scene to unite and make sure that Breakpoint will go on.

There will be a Breakpoint 2009. We have to cut costs, even where it hurts, and lots of the amenities of the last few years will be lost in the process. But by focusing on the core aspects of a successful demo party and with the support of the demo scene we can make our favourite easter meeting happen.

This isn't the time for couch sceners - this is the time to stand up for what we care about: our community of friendship, fair competition and technical prowess.

Broken Downloads (fixed)

Unfortunately we experienced some technical problems with the distribution of the download data mirrors over the last few days, as a result a lot of links to downloads went to 404 errors - yet nobody reported this, which is why it took until now to correct it.

Things are now back to normal.

Themes, Ratings and stuff!

Happy new year!
Of course, it should go without saying, the crew manning the guns here at the Mod Archive (m0d, jantore, Saga Musix, Sahkolihaa) wishes everyone a fantastic new year 2009.

New Theme
Arrgh, I forgot to post news about the new theme, which *doh* you probably have seen now, unless you have your cookies still set on the older or seasonal theme. The Silver Metal theme introduces a brighter and (in my opinion) more appealing aesthetic presentation to the site. If you haven't yet seen it, click here.

Ratings
I've shuffled the data around on the Ratings page so that the comment ratings are a lot easier to see from the overview, and I've also got new icons for various other bits around the site.

Profile Images
If your profile image appears 'warped', please upload it again - I've fixed (finally) the image resizing system so that it will resize to the correct specification without warping the image.

Donation Drive 2008 successful
We made it! Thanks to very generous donations the site hosting fund for 2008 was balanced wonderfully. I believe each and every visitor to The Mod Archive are thankful to those that contributed to the fund. We now have our goal set for 2009 and beyond, again, thank you all very much...

Icons
I have also taken a few of the Silk Icons and put them into use around the site. Frankly I felt that having to do them myself again is like reinventing the bloody wheel.

Yeah what is it... er, well it was actually a joke to begin with, but if you venture there you'll find a sickly pink site with confusing information - just let it be, it's an experimental site where I am showing off what can be done with the Modarchive XML API system on a remote website. It's currently just showing off peoples favourite module lists, in a rather horrible and ugly way

Modarchive IRC Chat

We have been running our IRC chat room for over 10 years now, and there are still people there that began back when it began!

Topics are social, not strictly music - as long as you abide by the common-sense rules you're welcome to join us.

Just point your client to irc.esper.net and join #modarchive. If you're not familiar with IRC yet would like to participate in the chats then join up on this site as a Member and the web-browser based chat will be available from the main menu (requires Java and direct internet connection).

Moderators are on hand most of the time to help out with chat issues (should there be any) however, just for reference please bear in mind that you must abide by the basic rules which are outlined here. Note: if you are not logged into the site you do not need to use the buttons on this page.
