Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll use a wood charger and wall clock kit, which requires basic tool and drill knowledge. The Mod Podging happens in smaller sections so wrinkles shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Hi guys! It’s Ashlee from My So Called Crafty Life! Today I am here to share a really fun DIY clock idea with you guys, decoupaged with comic books.

This fun personalized clock was made with a charger, a clock kit, and decorate it with paper ephemera. This is a simple and easy gift that I think would be wonderful for just about anyone on your list!

Comic Clock

Here’s What You Need:

• Charger
• Paper ephemera
• Clock kit
• Number plate
• Mod Podge Matte
• Paintbrush
• Scissors
• Craft knife and mat
• Drill with bits
• Glue

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is clean your charger and dry it and gather your paper ephemera. I used a Ren and Stimpy comic book.

Now start cutting up comic blocks or paper elements. Paint a little Mod Podge Matte on the plate and then smooth a piece of paper over the medium smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles.

Continue building your plate with papers, keep layering papers on the plate with the Mod Podge Matte. It’s ok if the paper goes off the side. We will cut it off later.

Once you have your charger completely filled with paper elements and the design is how you like it, paint a layer of the Mod Podge over the top of your comic book clock and set aside to dry.

Now you are ready to cut off the excess paper. Flip the charger over so the back side is facing up. Cut on a protected surface like a cutting mat or board. Using your craft knife, cut around the clock cutting off any excess paper and leaving a clean edge.

Next, paint your number plate. While it dries, you can cut your center hole.

Using a drill with a drill bit the same width as the bolt in your clock kit, drill a hole through the center of the charger. When your number plate is dry, glue it onto the front of the charger, lining up the holes.

To finish your clock, follow the instructions that came with your clock kit to finish assembly.

I love how my clock turned out! I made this one for my brother, who as a child of the 90’s loves Ren and Stimpy, like so many of us! This clock was really easy to put together, and fun!

I love how easy you can customize this comic book clock just by the shape of your charger and the paper ephemera you use.

Here’s the deal. I bought these adorable itty bitty cake plate stands a few months ago, and I have been itching to find them adorable glass cloche pieces for the top. I have searched and searched in vain.

Then I thought, maybe I could somehow make them? Well, I am not a glass artisan, but I sure know how to use fabric stiffener! I am dying over how cute they turned out, and I can’t wait to put them into action at a party!

DIY Dessert Cloche

Here’s what you need to make a crochet cake plate cloche of your own:

• Mod Podge Stiffy
• Crochet Doily
• Glass Knobs
• Hot Glue Gun
• Plastic Bowl
• Paintbrush
• Cake Plate

I found the glass knobs and crochet doilies at Michaels in their dollar section. They just happen to work perfectly for my cake plates, but doilies come in all different sizes.

You can also make a larger version that just sits on a dinner plate. You don’t even need the cake plate!

To get started, lay your crochet doily over the plastic bowl, placing the center of the doily on the top center of the bow.

Next, use your paintbrush and Mod Podge fabric stiffener to give the doily a thick even coat. If it helps, you can even use your fingers to rub it in to make sure it gets everywhere. You want to use it liberally, but not have it dripping either.

Set your bowls aside, and let the Mod Podge Stiffy dry for twenty-four hours. You will know it’s completely dry when you lift it off the bowl and it remains stiff. If your fabric still has movement, add more Stiffy and wait for it to dry again.

My doily dessert cloche had a scalloped edge that I didn’t want as part of the finished project. I think it’s cute either way, I just wanted mine to have a straight line.

I used scissors next to trim the doily so that it had an even edge. Again, it’s a personal preference, so do whatever makes your heart happy!

After your doily is dry and ready to go, just use a dab of hot glue to attach the glass hardware to the top. The glass hardware does come with long 2” screws, but in order to use them you would have to cut your screws down to about ¼” to 1/2”.

It’s really hard to cut screws without ruining the threading, so I didn’t use them at all. If you are worried about it not holding up, you can pick up shorter knob screws at Home Depot.

That’s it, just place your crochet cloche on top of your cake stand or dinner plate, and you are ready to go!

If you want to have an actual cloche that keeps out bugs for an outdoor party, you could totally replicate this idea with fabric instead of a crochet doily. There’s lots of options when it comes to fabric stiffener!

Right now I am using these little lovelies in my craft room for storing favorite embellishments, but I can’t wait until I can pull them out at my next party. And I can’t want to make more projects with fabric stiffener. I am hooked!

Skills Required; None. Even first time crafters can make these Scrabble coasters! The hardest part of the project is finding the tiles – look for an old game or tiles on eBay.

There’s a supply I keep on hand in one of the drawers of the kitchen – a product that can create masterpieces in minutes, in addition to fixing all of the little household issues that come up.

It’s called Krazy Glue, and I’m sure you’ve heard of it! I had some Scrabble tiles left over from another craft project, and I decided to use them to make some unique DIY coasters. So that’s what I did.

Here’s how I made these scrabble tile coasters. You won’t believe how easy this project is – it just took a few minutes.

Scrabble Coasters

Gather These Supplies

• Krazy Glue
• A cork tile big enough to make 4 coasters
• Scrabble tiles – you can get them from eBay or get faux ones from the craft store
• X-Acto knife
• Craft mat

Here are the two key supplies for this project. Krazy Glue has a craft glue and craft gel formula, which is just as strong as the household stuff. It also comes in a new 20g gel formula that you can use for larger projects.

You’ll need to lay out the cork tile on your surface, and grab your scrabble tiles. Decide if you want to spell words or just make it random, and begin laying them out in 4 x 4 patterns.

Start gluing the scrabble tiles to the cork. There’s a reason that the motto for Krazy Glue is “Krazy strong, Krazy fast”. It completes a craft faster than it takes to set and heat up a glue gun properly (and you won’t burn yourself!).

I love the gel especially because there’s no mess, and it fill in gaps when bonding mismatched surfaces.

Once the Krazy Glue is dry (which happens quickly), you can trim around the edges of your scrabble tiles with the X-Acto. Repeat for the three other coasters and that’s it!

I love my new scrabble tile coasters! And just so you know, Krazy Glue works on porcelain, pottery, plastic, rubber, metal and glass, or vinyl. I’ll be keeping it around for my next awesome craft project for sure.

Instructions

• Place the domes on scrap pieces of paper and trace with a pencil.
  
• Cut the paper out just inside the lines using scissors.
  
• Place a medium layer of Mod Podge on the top of the scrapbook paper, then place the dome down and press/smooth. If Mod Podge comes out the sides, wipe it away with your brush.
  
• Repeat with all of your glass cabochons and let the paper dry for a few hours.
  
• Glue one magnet to the back of each one. Let dry.
  
• Trace the mason jar lid on scrapbook paper. Cut out the insert and place inside the lid.
  
• Place the magnets in the jar and screw on the top to gift.

One thing that the pandemic taught parents is that you need to have ways to keep your kids busy at home.

Crafts are always a great idea, but sometimes you aren’t able to take a quick trip to a craft store to get the materials you want — like when you are on lockdown or you don’t have the money to spend on special craft supplies.

This is why it is important to have common kid craft supplies on hand, and a list of crafts that don’t need any special items to complete.

With this in mind, I’ve made a list of fun craft ideas for kids to make at home with supplies commonly found in your house. To make it on this list, the craft needed to meet this criteria:

• Use only common kid craft supplies like paper, paint, stickers, pipe cleaners, pom poms, googly eyes, etc. and of course, Mod Podge!
• Or, use recycling items such as cardboard, newspaper, cans, toilet paper tubes, etc.
• Or, use things normally found in a home like paper plates, duct tape, wrapping paper, food coloring, etc.
• It was definitely a bonus if the craft item could be played with after it is made. Keep kids busy longer!

There’s something about nautical decorating that never seems to go out of style.

Maybe it’s the crisp blues and whites. Maybe it’s the beachy vibe. Maybe it’s because most of us would rather be sitting by the ocean than answering emails. Whatever the reason, nautical decor has a way of making a room feel relaxed, fresh, and a little bit like vacation.

The problem is that finding wall art you actually like can be surprisingly difficult.

Walk into a home decor store and you’ll usually find one of two extremes. Either everything is covered in anchors, ropes, and seashells to the point where your room starts looking like a themed seafood restaurant, or the artwork is beautiful but costs far more than you’re willing to spend.

That’s why I love making my own art.

Not only do you save money, but you get complete control over the colors, patterns, and style. Want something modern? Easy. Prefer a coastal cottage look? Go for it. Looking for beach decor that feels sophisticated instead of cheesy? You’re in the right place.

This DIY nautical wall art tutorial is one of my favorite ways to create custom art because it’s simple enough for beginners but looks polished enough to display proudly. The secret is combining painted canvas backgrounds with bold nautical silhouettes cut from cardstock.

Add Mod Podge (my favorite decoupage glue, of course), and suddenly you’ve got artwork that looks like it came from a boutique home store.

The original version uses a ship wheel, anchor, life preserver, and nautical flag, but you can choose whatever designs fit your style. Lighthouses, sailboats, whales, seashells, sea turtles, and beach grasses all work beautifully.

The color palette is another place where you can have fun. I went with a modern combination of navy, white, and light blue because it feels classic without being overly themed. But if you’re decorating a bathroom, beach house, guest room, or even a mantel area, you can easily adjust the colors to fit your space.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Nautical Wall Decor

This project doesn’t require advanced artistic skills.

You don’t need to know how to paint a lighthouse. You don’t need to sketch a sailboat. You don’t even need particularly steady hands.

The silhouettes do all the hard work for you.

Before starting any DIY nautical wall art project, I recommend choosing your color palette first. In fact, that’s exactly how this project came together.

Classic nautical decorating usually includes:

• Navy blue
• White

• Light blue
• Sandy beige

You can even incorporate touches that remind you of the beach, like weathered driftwood tones or colors inspired by sand and sea glass.

Keeping your palette limited helps the finished artwork feel cohesive and professionally designed.

I stumbled across a beautiful nautical-inspired color combination and built the project around it. Sometimes inspiration works that way.

As you can see, the palette I selected is called “modern nautical” – and the rest is history.

Choosing the Art

I decided to use four silhouettes: a nautical flag, a ship steering wheel (is that what they are called?), an anchor and a life preserver. I’ve included some printable templates in the post.

Or if you know what you want, search for “anchor silhouette” (for example). There are a ton of free sources. Once you have decided what you want, print out and make sure the designs fit the canvases.

A Simple Project with Big Impact

My favorite DIY projects are the ones that look much more complicated than they actually are.

This is definitely one of them.

With some paint, a few sheets of scrapbook paper, a canvas, and a bottle of Mod Podge, you can create custom wall decor that perfectly matches your home. It’s affordable, beginner-friendly, and a fun way to experiment with color and design.

A larger grouping makes a dramatic statement over a sofa, while smaller canvases work perfectly in a bathroom, hallway, or bedroom.

Instructions

• Print out the nautical designs to fit your canvases. Match them up with the paper colors you'd like to use, and match those with the canvas paint colors you'd like to use.
  
• Paint your canvases using your paint and brush. Take a peek at the finished picture and you can see that I actually used three colors on my canvases: white, navy, and light blue. Let them dry.
  
• Trim down designs and secure them to the paper colors with painter's tape. Place on the cutting mat.
  
• The next part takes a little bit of time, but it's actually quite easy. Use your craft knife and scissors to carefully cut out your silhouettes from the scrapbook paper.
  
• Once your silhouettes are cut out, simply Mod Podge them to the fronts of the canvases. Let them dry.
• Apply sealing coats of Mod Podge to the canvases. Let dry completely before hanging.

Have you ever spotted a piece of decor at a store and thought, “That could be so cute if they hadn’t made that choice?”

Maybe it was the color. Maybe it was the pattern. Maybe it was covered in fake gold that looked more Vegas than vintage.

That’s exactly what happened with this project.

I found a piece of key wall art that had a lot of potential. The ornate frame was beautiful. The antique-style keys were interesting. But the overall look just wasn’t me. It felt a little dated, a little dark, and definitely not something I was excited to hang on my wall.

But instead of walking away, I started imagining what it could become.

That’s one of my favorite things about DIY. Sometimes the best projects aren’t built from scratch. Sometimes they’re hiding in the clearance aisle, at the thrift store, or tucked away in the back corner of a home decor shop just waiting for a makeover.

With a little paint, some fabric, and plenty of Mod Podge, this forgotten piece was completely transformed.

The best part is that you don’t need to find the exact same wall art I used. In fact, you can easily recreate this look using an ornate picture frame, a backing board, your favorite fabric, and a set of faux antique keys from Amazon. The process is exactly the same, and you’ll end up with something that feels custom-made for your home.

I chose bright paint shades of teal and aqua because they’re some of my favorite colors, and they pair beautifully with the patterned fabric background. The combination feels vintage, whimsical, and just a little unexpected. But that’s the beauty of this project—you can completely customize it to fit your own style.

Love farmhouse decor? Try distressed white paint and neutral linen fabric. Prefer something dramatic? Go with black, gold, and a bold floral print. Want a cottagecore vibe? Soft pastels and tiny florals would be adorable.

The keys are what really make this piece special. There’s something charming and mysterious about vintage keys. They spark curiosity and add instant character to a room. Mounted against a colorful fabric background, they become less of a hardware item and more of a piece of art.

And honestly, that’s my favorite kind of craft project: the one that takes something ordinary and turns it into something people stop and ask about.

• 1 Frame with backer
• Faux antique keys

• Craft paint shades of blue

Instructions

• Sand down the background (if you need to) and then paint it Titanium White. My background was dark, so it was necessary to paint a lighter color so that the background doesn't show through. It will definitely show through if the background is dark and the fabric isn't thick. Allow to dry.
  
• Make sure your fabric is washed, dried and ironed. Prepare the fabric with Mod Podge – this means putting the fabric down on a non-stick surface and applying a medium layer of Mod Podge.
  
Allow to dry. You can now cut the fabric without it fraying, and it's easier to apply to a finished surface because it won't wrinkle.
• Here I'm applying Mod Podge to the back piece. Apply a medium layer and then lay your fabric down – smooth, smooth and smooth!
  
• Push all of the air bubbles out and wipe away any excess Mod Podge that comes out the sides. Allow to dry. Once the fabric has dried to the back piece, give the top another coat of Mod Podge. Allow to dry.
• Paint your frame. I used the tiny brush and gave it several coats. It went on surprisingly well, and I really enjoyed the painting. Very cathartic.
  
I used color chips to pick the colors of paint I wanted to use for my keys to go with my frame and background.
• Paint your keys with your paint colors. It's going to take several coats, but it's fun.
  
• Don't forget to use your small brush to paint inside the little grooves and holes.
  
• Glue the keys down with your craft glue. Allow your key wall art to dry and then give the key portrait several coats of Mod Podge Gloss sealer. It shines and then it's chip proof.

I have a weakness for sad furniture.

You know the kind. It’s sitting in the corner of a thrift store looking a little tired, sporting a questionable paint color and a few mysterious stains. Most people walk right past it. I immediately start imagining what it could become.

That’s exactly what happened with this little corner table.

The piece itself was solid, but the finish had definitely seen better days. Rather than sending it to the donation cycle again, I decided it was the perfect candidate for a makeover. A little paint, a vintage graphic, and some patience completely transformed the piece.

If you’ve never tried an image transfer before, don’t let it intimidate you. The process takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are almost endless. You can add vintage labels, botanical illustrations, typography, family photos, maps, and more to almost any furniture surface.

One thing I noticed while researching this project is that many furniture artists use transfers from companies like ReDesign with Prima and other specialty brands. Those products are beautiful, but creating your own image transfer lets you customize every detail and often costs much less.

The key is using the right transfer medium and starting with a properly prepared furniture surface. Once those pieces are in place, you can create custom designs that look like they were always part of the furniture.

I especially love using image transfer techniques on thrifted furniture because they instantly add character. A plain side table becomes French-inspired. A boring cabinet gets vintage charm. A simple shelf suddenly looks like something you’d find in an antique market.

The best part? No artistic talent required.

You simply choose an image, print it using a laser printer, apply the medium, and let the process do the work.

What Kind of Image Works Best?

Almost any graphic can work for an image transfer project.

Vintage advertisements, French labels, botanical prints, typography, maps, and old postcards are all popular choices. I found this vintage graphic online and knew it would be perfect for the table.

If your image includes words, remember to reverse it before printing. During the image transfer process, the design will flip when applied.

A laser printer is important because toner transfers differently than standard ink. If you don’t own one, many office supply stores can print your image for a small fee.

Why Use a Transfer Instead of Decoupage?

People often confuse image transfer and decoupage, but they’re actually different techniques.

With decoupage, you’re attaching paper to the furniture. With the transfer, the image itself looks more like it becomes part of the furniture surface while the paper is removed afterward.

The result is softer, more vintage-looking, and often appears painted onto the piece rather than glued on top.

Tips for a Successful Image Transfer

A few things make a huge difference:

• Start with a smooth surface.
• Use a laser rather than an inkjet printer.
• Apply an even layer of transfer medium.
• Allow the project to dry completely before removing the paper.
• Work slowly when rubbing away the paper backing.

Patience is probably the most important supply. Many transfer failures happen because people rush the drying process.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

My Image Looks Cloudy

This usually means paper fibers remain on the surface. Dampen the area and continue rubbing gently.

I Damaged Part of the Transfer

Small imperfections are common with image transfer projects and often add vintage charm. Touch up areas carefully with paint if desired.

I Have White Spots

White areas typically indicate leftover paper. Additional rubbing usually solves the problem.

I Have Bubbles Under the Image

Bubbles form when the image isn’t smoothed completely during application. Take extra time removing bubbles before the project dries.

The Finished Makeover

The transformation was dramatic.

What started as a worn thrift store table became a charming vintage-inspired accent piece. The soft colors paired perfectly with the transferred graphic, and the transfer gave the furniture a custom look that paint alone couldn’t achieve.

• Chalk Paint

Instructions

• Start by cleaning off the table from dust and dirt.
  
• This step is optional, but I highly recommend it, even if your furniture is unfinished. Use sandpaper to smooth out your surface and/or rough up the old paint.
  
Read my article on how to prep furniture for decoupage.
• Choose your main color and paint your table. You’ll want to paint several coats – I did three. Let the paint dry between coats, and let it dry completely when finished.
  
• Paint your second color on the legs or other portions of the furniture project that you would like to accent. Give these areas at least two coats of paint and let them dry.
  
• While your table is drying, print out the image of your choice on an inkjet printer. Make sure it fits your table (or other piece of furniture) and then cut out completely. Don’t leave any white areas around the edges as those will transfer along with the image.
  
If you select an image with words on it, you need to reverse the images before printing, so that when the image is transferred, the words will be going in the right direction.
• Use the foam brush to spread photo transfer medium completely over the front of the image – you want to spread enough so that you can no longer see the image.

  Once the image is covered, flip it over and smooth onto your table or other piece of furniture. Smooth thoroughly and leave to dry for 24 hours.
  
If any photo transfer medium comes out from under the edges of the image as you are smoothing, simply wipe it away with a wet cloth.
• Use water to dampen the image and start rubbing. Keep rubbing portions of the paper away and the image beneath will be revealed!

  Use medium pressure when rubbing – you want to use enough pressure so that the top layer of paper is removed, but not too hard. You don’t want to rub off the image underneath! Once you are done removing the top layer, let it dry.
  
• Use Mod Podge to seal the table top. Add at least three coats and let dry.

I’m not a big fan of bright light. These give off a very subtle and pretty glow that isn’t overwhelming. I need to make about a hundred, because my friends would love them for gifts. Here’s the tutorial, straight from David.

If you’ve ever lined a walkway with paper luminarias on Christmas Eve, you know they’re beautiful . . . and also a little temporary. A gust of wind, a surprise rain shower, or a curious kid can turn your display into a project that needs constant attention.

That’s what inspired these DIY luminaries.

I wanted something that captured the warm charm of traditional white paper bag luminarias, but would last beyond a single evening. I also wanted a project that wouldn’t cost a fortune.

As usual, that sent me wandering through the hardware store looking for materials that were never intended to become home decor.

That’s when I found galvanized tie plates.

These metal plates are normally used for construction, but they have one feature that immediately caught my attention: holes. Lots of holes.

When a votive candle or battery-operated tea lights are placed inside, the light shines through the openings and creates a beautiful pattern on nearby surfaces.

One of my favorite things about this project is how customizable it is. I used vintage travel images, but scrapbook paper, maps, sheet music, book pages, or family photos would work just as well. You can even make a themed luminaria for a wedding, birthday, or other special event.

These DIY luminaries also make great gifts. I know more than one guest who has asked how they were made after seeing them displayed around the neighborhood. In fact, I think they’d make a fun craft project for teens working alongside an adult.

How to Make Luminaries

Learn how to make a luminary using metal plates from the hardware store that will last all year, even through the weather.

Ingredients

• 4 pieces tie plates galvanized, 3 1/8 x 7"
• 4 pieces square dowels cut to 6 1/4" length
• 1 piece scrap wood 3 1/8” x 3 1/16"
• Gorilla Glue
• Mod Podge Matte
• Paper

Instructions

• Cut a square wood base sized so the metal plates overlap neatly at the corners. For the 3 1/8" x 7" galvanized tie plates used here, cut the base approximately 3 1/8" square.
  
• You want the dowels to rest on the base but not stick out the top. Measure the height of the tie plates and subtract the thickness of the base. For 7-inch plates and a 1/2-inch base, cut the dowels to approximately 6 1/4 inches long so they sit flush inside the structure.
  
• Glue two dowels to one metal plate using Gorilla Glue, with the base as a guide so that the dowels are at the right height.

  Repeat with the second pair of dowels and another plate. Allow the glue to become slightly tacky before positioning the pieces.
  
The glue against the metal is slippery at first – I found that if I let it sit for a few minutes to get tacky I could make sure it was in the right place and then pile some weight on top to ensure a good bond without anything slipping.
• Glue the dowel-and-plate sections to the wood base.
  
• Position the remaining tie plates on the open sides and mark where the holes align with the dowels.
  
• If desired, drill pilot holes and temporarily secure the plates with small screws while the glue dries.
  
• Use clamps to hold everything in place until fully cured.
  
Remove any temporary screws when glue is dry – they just serve to hold the plate in place while the glue dries.
• Apply decorative paper or printed images to the metal plates using Mod Podge Matte. Allow to dry completely, then brush on a sealing coat of Mod Podge. Trim away excess paper.
  
If these are going to be out in the snow or intense sunshine then I would use Mod Podge Outdoor.
• Using a toothpick, carefully poke through the paper anywhere it covers the existing holes in the galvanized plates. Gently widen the openings so light can pass through.
  
• Place battery-operated tea lights inside each luminary. A tea candle look is perfect for creating ambiance, though battery-operated tea lights are the safest choice.

Notes

• In this case I realized that I could have used the screw trick from step six when I attached the dowels. Just apply the glue, lay the metal down and screw it into place until it dries. Much simpler.
• Also I realized that I should have painted the insides as it wasn’t too attractive when all was said and done. Since it was too late to paint, I instead cut a square of Plexiglas the same size as my base, hand sanded one side of it to make it opaque and dropped it in the top of the luminary. It looks great and gives it a nice, finished look.
• If you’ve got a drill press you can drill even more holes through the sides to create more light.
