This blogpost is not an apology for disappearing off the blog. No, this is more a clarification because I do love blogging. I do enjoy your comments even though my time is getting less and less. But, you ask Nefferth where have you been this time around? Well, my dear readers I was busy trying to get myself into the fashion academy Artemis in Amsterdam.

I'm excited to announce that I'm officially starting Fashion Design at the Artemis Academy in Amsterdam this fall. I was so nervous at the intake because it's been a dream of mine for a long time. It took me a few years of life experience to realize that the time is now and not later. I was afraid of taking this leap, leaving behind a very solid career and plunging into this adventure called the fashion world. Basically I want to say: do not let fear keep your from doing the things you love. And if you don't know what you love yet, then start seeking to find out what makes your heart goes faster, your mind challenged and your life richer.

Double excitement this week. Monday my brother and his wife became parents for the first time of my little nephew. And yesterday it was the abdication of our Queen Beatrix and the coronation of the new King Willem-Alexander. Every year Queensday is a celebrated nationally and yesterday it was celebrated in a great way. The former Princess Maxima is known for her exquisite taste in fashion. And yes, yesterday she didn't disappoint. She wore two creations of Dutch designer Jan Taminiau. This beautiful royal blue dress with cape was absolutely modern yet within tradition. She looks so chic in this creation.

I can wait till the end of the year to make a recapitulation of things I feel proud about. Or I can savor the moment and share it. Indeed, I choose the latter option. When I started my blog I was in such a defeated place in my life. No sense of perspective or purpose, feeling broken. In not a million years I thought sharing personal style pictures would one day let me be featured in an esteemed Dutch newspaper with 3 other celebrated talented women:

The section is a special about curvy women rising upin the fashion world. What I like is the different approaches. Four different women who all have their own take on fashion, but embrace the same mission: it all starts with self-love. And having my blog as a platform not only to share personal style but also as an advocate to embrace YOU no matter your size is just beyond my dreams. I thank God. I thank you, the reader, coming to Mode Plus to read, to get inspired, to partake in discussion.

When Spring Is Not Coming

One fact about Dutch weather, you never know which way it is going to turn out. One day you are freezing, the next day you are taking your sandals out of the closet. I myself have been born and raised in a tropical environment. The only weather change I experienced growing up was hurricane periods. Meaning loads of rain and wind, but all of this in a steady 29 degrees Celsius. I'm not sure when Spring is coming to the Netherlands this year. Till then I'll be playing around with combinations, hoping I can wear tight free legs very soon.

AX Paris Curve PU Leather Skirt Part Three

I don't know where it all came of all of a sudden, but I've been seeing cropped tops everywhere. Maybe we can blame all the American Apparel advertorials. Although I like - and know this style from way back when - it is hard not to go all Madonna Lucky Star with this trend.

This outfit is a little out of my comfort zone. I rarely show this much skin, not because I'm ashamed of my curves. It is the opposite, I am proud of them. That doesn't mean I show them continuously. I prefer to leave some mistery if possible. So this look I would really rock with a date night out with my man.

Sunday Post 21 | Plus Size On The Runway

I'm back from my London trip and I have so much to add on my previous post. Basically I don't know where to start. But let me start by saying I came back refreshed, empowered and the best of all inspired. Surrounded by beautiful, confident ladies in all shapes and sizes. Yes, I really do mean ALL. For example I saw size 12 pears just as I saw size 8 banana walking around. Of course the curvier team was represented in a big way (no pun intended). Does my euphoric words imply that all is rosy in the garden? Absolutely not! Without getting too much into the details, I will say this. I compare the BPSFW event with the first generation of Apple products. We know that they have their little pet peeves. Still we want them and we buy them.One thing is for sure, change is coming, slowly but it is. Hopefully sooner than later.

Behind The Brand: One One Three

On my way to the One One Three studio in East London the weather was cold and rainy. As soon as I arrived I was welcomed by two fashionable - yet individualistic styles - ladies in their mid 20's, Keenan Goldstone and Najma Ali. Little did I know that this vivacious duo was the designing mind behind the plussize UK brand 113. Keenan, bubbly talkative South African beauty, was in her spiked red dress rocking soft curls à la Beyoncé. Najma, at first sight the more reserved one of the power duo, was in an all black attire looking fabulously chic. Although their styles differ, these ladies are focused and on a mission to revolutionize the fashion world. Intrigued by their drive, I wanted to know how they would describe the 113 customer. "The 113 woman loves fashion", Keenan said enthusiasticly. "She uses fashion to express herself". Najma adds "We will not be put in a box. Fashion is fashion whether you're slim or fat". It's evident these ladies put their money where their mouth is. They make fashion that actually fit plus size women, starting from size 14 till a size 32.

Showcasing 12 pieces this Saturday at the British Plus Size Fashion Weekend, they are a fashion force to be reckoned with. Onderweg naar de One One Three studio, was het weer niet bepaald aantrekkelijk. Koud en nat van de regen stond ik voor de studio om verwelkomd te worden door twee dynamische 20+ vrouwen, Keenan Goldstone en Najma Ali. Blijkt dus dat Keenan en Najma het briljante creatieve brein zijn achter de nieuwe plussize Engelse merk 113. Keenan, valt gelijk op met haar spontane zelf, terwijl Najma in eerste instantie gereserveerd overkomt. Beide zagen er on point uit, maar toch ieder met een eigen stijl. Keenan droeg haar rode spiked jurk, lekker rock 'n roll. Najma koos voor tout noir tenue, verfijnd chic. Geboeid door hun ambitie wilde ik meer weten. "De 113 vrouw houdt van mode", vertelt Keenan enthousiast. "Mode is een uitlaatklep om zichzelf te uiten". Najma voegt toe "We zullen ons niet langer laten inkisten. Mode is mode of je nou slank of dik bent". Het is duidelijk, voor deze fashionista's is het menens. Hun collectie wordt gemaakt door plussize vrouwen voor de plussize vrouw, vanaf maat 42 t/m zelfs maat 60. In mijn you tube filmpje vraag ik het designer duo wat hun inspiratie was achter de populaire zwart/wit jurk, wat hun favoriete stuk is uit de collectie en waar 113 eigenlijk voor staat.

This is my first post from London. As you all know by now, in a few days British Plus Size Fashion Weekend will start. So I was happy to find this XOXO Knit Jumper from AX Paris Curve at my doorstep.

This jumper has a perfect density to transition from winter to spring. I love the material, it doesn't feel itchy which is always my issue with knits. I received a size 20/22 and I'm surprised my sleeves fit properly. I'm 5"10, mostly sleeves end 3/4 on my arms. You can see in the pictures that the jumper fits quit snug. So I would advice to size up if you want a more looser fit. Okay, let's talk the price. It retails at £35 (€41) what is pretty normal for the plus size industry. For some reason the prices are always a little more higher than regular sizes. But what I do love is that AX Paris delivered the same style they produce for their regular range. We curvy, plus size gals want stylish clothes too, so big two thumbs up for that.

BPSFW What To Wear

Just a few weeks away and then we have the first BPSFW. So excited, it's hard to get some proper sleep. If you're wondering why I'm suffering from sleep deprivation, I suggest you look at the post title (sooo obvious no??). I've talked about staring at your closet, not knowing what to wear. I proposed to get inspiration from the London Men's Collection, if you're staring at your closet not knowing what to wear. But I admit just looking at collections will not get you in to that fantabulous outfit, right? And even though I'm not against fast fashion (great lover of H&M myself), you don't want to get caught in tout Primark either. Or worse, the same dress, shoe, coat, trousers , O-M-G, sweating bullets on my forehead, gasping for air .... Identify with me? Then this post is for you.

Invest in one key piece
If you're not sure what items classify as staple pieces, I suggest you apply the rule of 3 on the item.

Does it combine with other pieces? Meaning can you remix it?
Does it stand the test of time? Will you be able to wear it all season?
Does it flatter your body and makes you want to wear it forever and ever?

If all of the above are answered with a convincing yes, then my dear Emotionista friend I think you just might have found some key pieces.

D.I.Y
To avoid looking like an ASOS Curve advertisement or -fill in any plus size brand of your liking- one must learn the art of customization. Do you remember Xzibit pimping everybody's ride back in the day? Well, you try the same method, but on your wardrobe. Take your plain coat, top, shoes etc.. and go all out in repainting, reblinging so the end result is one-of-a-kind.

Mix and Match
Throw all fashion rules out of the window and start experimenting with color, patterns, structure, material, brands. Probably when you feel the most out of place, that's the mix you'll have to stick to. Adding vintage pieces to your outfit makes it also instantly unique. For we all know vintage pieces are an unicum. And also don't be afraid to try out your local thrift stores.

Accessorize XL
Last but not least, the bling, the cherry on top, yes your accessories. For me that implies jewelry, shoes and make-up. Use them to add pazazz to your basic wardrobe.

Als mode blogger wordt er ergens toch verwacht dat ik de laatste trends in mijn kast heb hangen. Ook al gaat het voornamelijk om mijn persoonlijke stijl, het is voor de lezer interessanter als ik ook combinaties maak met merken die je in het centrum van de stad kan vinden. Nou dan heb ik een leuke verrassing voor jou vandaag op de blog. Onlangs ging ik online shoppen op de grote maten damesmode afdeling bij Miss Etam. De maten starten hier vanaf maat 44 tot maat 56. Perfect want ik schommel tussen maat 50/52. Mocht jij voor welk reden dan ook niets vinden, is de afdeling met positiekleding (ja,ja - echt waar!!) of de reguliere damesmode een kijkje waard. De maten gaan wel t/m maat 46/48. Hieronder vind je mijn collage van leuke kledingstukken die ik heb gevonden.

Maar terug naar mijn eerste inzet van dit artikel. Uiteindelijk heb ik gekozen voor een tuniek, een vest, een tregging (ipv een legging), een kanten top en een luipaard print riempje (zie collage). In het filmpje kun je zien hoe ik met 5 stukken verschillende combinaties maakt. Leuk voor jou en leuk voor jouw portemonnee.

De tuniek
De tuniek valt soepel om het lichaam. Ik heb twee maten groter besteld zodat ik de tuniek eventueel ook als jurk kan dragen. Het riempje met de panter print creëert een taille als je dat prettiger vindt. De elastische band kun je ook om de heupen trekken en dan heb je een oversized trui idee zoals bij de foto met de rode broek. Verder voelt het materiaal warm en zacht aan. Het prikt niet en dat komt toch best vaak voor in synthetische stoffen. Dit lijkt me ook prima te dragen in de koele lente dagen.
De broek
Een tregging is een kruising tussen een legging en een broek. Het materiaal is iets dikker zodat het gekleder oogt. Dat is bij deze tregging goed gelukt. Ik vind de stof stevig en juist ook soepel genoeg. Ik wil kunnen bewegen zonder gelijk met de schrik voor een scheur in mijn broek. Wel jammer dat de pijpen niet smaller zijn gemaakt. Persoonlijk vind ik dat mooier en stoerder staan.
De vest
Vesten kopen is altijd een gedoe bij mij. Ik ben 1m80 en ik heb een grote maat borstwijdte. Dat betekent dat ik zowel de lengte en de breedte nodig heb. In de foto draag ik een maat 54 (te groot voor mij) waardoor het bij de armen plooit. Ik heb het gecombineerd met een kanten top om de boel wat spannender te maken maar toch werk vriendelijk te houden.

Still one of my favorite quotes I've mentioned before in my previous post. In that particular post I emphasized on the importance of discovering your uniqueness in this life. My belief is that by discovering what truly makes you stand out, you will have more respect for other viewpoints. The fact that we are daily bombarded with a certain type of beauty which is acceptable, will have less and less influence on your state of mind. You know your worth and act accordingly. This said, being a firm Emotionista, I believe clothes should support your emotional self. This new UK brand, One One Three shows a basic color palette with a lot of POW! From form fitting pieces adorned with spikes to more loose fitting clothes. I'm excited to see their show on BPSFW 2013.

Okay, en nu naar de kleding van One One Three. Als Emotionista zoek ik naar kleding die mijn gevoel ondersteunen. Dit Engelse merk gebruikt een basis kleuren palette met wel heel veel POWER! Van nauw aangesloten stukken met studs tot aan wat ruim vallende stukken, het is één van de merken waar ik zeker naar uitkijk komende BPSFW 2013.

What is your favorite London Men Collection?

The Time Is Now

As I was preparing this post, I was searching for a title that would cover the amplitude. I've been asked to join this wonderful and exciting adventure called London Plus Size Fashion Week. The event is scheduled on two days: February 15th and 16th. Recently I've been seeing more and more awareness for this event and I say: It's about time! Being a plus size curvy woman, I love fashion but fashion doesn't always love me. When I first heard of the founder/blogger Remi Ray joining forces with editor-in-chief Rianne Ward, my heart skipped a beat. The LPSFW would be in one of the coolest European cities -yes, London-, it would take place during a very inspiring week -London Fashion Week- and yes, it would feature the plus size fashion industry. Think

I applaud this endeavour because I think we should act and create a reaction within the fashion world. There's no more ignoring plus size models, designers and brands. Our time has come to be taking seriously and having a platform is absolutely great.
Can you imagine having a PSFW in Amsterdam, Tokyo, Milan, Berlin or Paris???? Well, I do and the time is now.

Dutch Version
De eerste keer dat ik de combinatie van een Fashion Week en plus size hoorde, was in 20 11. Ik mocht als blogger aanwezig zijn tijdens de FFFweek in New York (lees artikel hier en hier ook). Een jaar later kwam een soort gelijk initiatief Curves on the Catwalk in Amsterdam (lees artikel 1, 2 en 3). En komend februari komt de London Plus Size Fashion Week, in het kort LPSFW. Dit evenement vindt ook tijdens de LFW dus het is erg spannend wat de reacties zullen zijn. Ik ben door het LPSFW gevraagd of ik interesse had om hierover te bloggen. Mijn antwoord was gelijk positief omdat ik vind dat er iets moet veranderen in het mode beeld. Ik wil meer variatie zien van maten en nationaliteiten. Daarnaast ben ik nieuwsgierig naar de ontwerpers die mee zullen doen, alle modellen en andere ondernemers. We kunnen wachten totdat we gezien worden, maar we kunnen ook zelf ondernemen. Mocht je de LPSFW willen bezoeken, lijkt het mij leuk om samen te shoppen. Ik wil best een shopping route in London maken. Natuurlijk gericht op de curvy vrouw. The year 2013

First I want to wish you all a blazing 2013. Hope you celebrated your way, either raising a glass or dancing on the roof top, enjoying the fireworks or like me staying up late with my love reminiscing the good old times in 2012. It's been a while now since I stopped making resolutions. Why? Simply because for some reason I don't ever stick with them. And having an obsession for making list wasn't helping me either. So after collecting list after list, year in year out, I finally was convinced that maybe I wasn't a resolution making girl. Thus I needed a more goal oriented approach.

Synonyms for goal are aim-purpose-target-object-end-mark. All these nouns suggest some sort of action. In my teaching days I used to guide my students in making SMART goals.

Approaching your goals the SMART way, will give you a sense of direction. Not only will you make visible what it is you want to achieve, this method is also a great way to define your behaviour.

Step 1
Decide on the W's.
Who, what, where, when, why, etcetera. The more you can explain in this step the more solid your goal will be.
Step 2
Think about how you will know when your goal is accomplished. What concrete criteria will help you achieve your goal?
Step 3
Describe a result. What will be the outcome of your efforts?
Step 4
Yes, be bold, go for that challenge but keep it balanced by taking relevancy into account.

Make sure your goals are realizable. It's all about staying connected and grounded with your reality.
Step 5
Just add a start and ending date. And stick to it. This will work best if you keep it short-term.

By following these steps you unconciously reset yoor mind in motion to start working towards your goal. If still this sounds a little to abstract for you, let me try and share one of my SMART goals for Mode Plus in 2013. Instead of saying : I'll comment more on other blogs. I choose to state this : I'll plan one day in the week to comment on 10 blogs during January. At the end of the month I've showed love and support to at least 40 different blogs. It's do-able, I have a start and finish, my task is clear -commenting one day a week- my target -different 10 blogs- is also clear. I even know when I've reached my goal.

Ever since I started Mode Plus, I've been wishing for a rise of

fashion designers who would cater to the curvier gal. That is one reason

why I started fashion school myself. So you can imagine my delight when

I heard my friends @MadisonPlus are launching a platform especially for

upcoming indie plus-size designers. Can I hear a "woohoo"!!

Feautering pieces from Vivere, Stefanie Bezaire and Zaftig by fashion blogger Mandy Fierens, each designer has their own size range - from size 10 up to a size 28 - that means no discussion about leaving any size out.

A small curvette or a bigger curvette, all can shop at one place. I'm showing my support by blogging about this platform. Never change a winning formula is what the designers team at Miu Miu, Kenzo and Rochas I suppose we're thinking when the 1960s and 1970s inspired graphic patterns appeared on the A/W12 runway. The prints on themselves are a bold fashion move. Designers pushed the envelope by stacking geomatric shapes one on top of the other creating an explosing of color and shapes. It took me a while to find a variation of this trend in plus size fashion styles. I'm still figuring why though?!

Geomatric Print Trousers by modeplus featuring a red lip stick

I would have loved seeing H&M+ create a blazer and top accompyning the trousers.
How fly would that have been?
