10 Checklist Rules For Portfolio Perfection

Once you have been signed by an agent, they will give you the go ahead to have a modeling portfolio created. This portfolio will be sent to potential clients, so that they can see what you can do, and what you’ve done already.

Remember that you should only create a portfolio without your agent if you are an internet model and don’t need one to find work. For every other circumstance, you’ll need your agent’s advice in order to make your portfolio stand out from the rest.

#1: Hire a Great Photographer

It’s your responsibility to hire a photographer who can take the best photos of you. This means asking around, and looking through many photography portfolios before settling on the right one. Your modeling portfolio needs niche specific shots, so be sure to hire a niche specific photographer.

#2: Set Up a Pre-Shoot Meeting

All great portfolios are planned, so you need to meet with your photographer and discuss ideas for the shoot. This pre-meeting is very important if you’re going to have an outstanding portfolio.

#3: Pack For The Shoot

Once you have brainstormed about the shoot, you’ll need to pack for it. This will include wardrobe, make-up and props. You have a clear idea on what you’ll be posing for, so packing shouldn’t be a problem, and your modeling portfolio should turn out great.

#4: Camera Chemistry

On the day of your shoot if something is clicking well, then roll with it. Camera chemistry produces the best images; so if you and your photographer get in the zone, don’t disrupt it because your schedule says it’s time to change.

#5: Covering Your Bases

Make sure you do eventually complete all of the goals for the day, even if it takes longer than expected. Your modeling portfolio needs to be perfect, so a structured schedule on the day is necessary.

#6: Including a Bit of Variety

Be careful not to take too many photos of the same scene or outfit. You should never have more than 2 photographs of the same concept in your portfolio. Aim for 15 perfect images, and at least 9 different outfits or situations to choose from.

#7: Selecting The Photos

This is the most important part of putting together your modeling portfolio. Ask friends, family, and photographers which images they prefer for your portfolio. Begin by narrowing it down to 60, then 30, and finally 15. You don’t need more than 15 photos in your portfolio to begin with.

#8: Printing on Quality Paper

Why go through all of that hassle and expense, to eventually photocopy the photos, or print them on shoddy paper? Save up and print your high quality images on photographic paper for the most professional finish.

#9: Invest In a Quality Show Book

Your modeling portfolio needs to be presented as a high end option, and the only way to do this is to present it in a high end book or binder. Buy something that keeps the photographs protected, but doesn’t reduce the quality of the image because of cheap plastic covers.

#10: Permanent Updates

Every six months your portfolio begins to fall out of date. Prevent this from happening by taking a few new photos and inserting them every few months. Always include tearsheets from the jobs you get.

With these ten rules in place, you’ll be able to create a neat, professional modeling portfolio that will wow photographers and art directors.

Learning To Control The Way You Look

Learning the right model poses is a great first step in your modeling career. Developing a natural ability to control the way you look on camera, can take you all the way to the top. Some of the most successful models today are a delicate blend of professionalism and the right look – and have an amazing ability to enhance the emotion of any given situation in a photograph. This is something you should think about developing, if you’re going to become a world class model.

Working With Emotion

The most important part of a model’s pose is how they portray emotion. In fact, this is such a specific skill that models are often hired because they do a particular look very well – the dark, broody look on a male model for example. Practice your emotions in the mirror and try to personify each of them, so that they come out well on camera. Emotional model poses can also be experimented with on camera – if you get one of your friends to shoot you fairly often.

Relaxing Your Body

One of the most difficult things about posing in a specific scene is making it look 100% natural. It’s your job to relax and adapt to your surroundings, fitting in as effortlessly as possible. Take long steady breaths during the shoot, and make a point of easing your own tension before some crucial shots. Anxious shots translate on camera, so even, steady breathing and relaxation are great for poses.

Body Conscious

When your model poses become second nature, you’ll naturally know how to stand (or sit) to make yourself look a certain way. Being aware of your body as you pose is a vital part of controlling how you look on camera. Make sure that your posture is always correct, or it could ruin a great batch of photos. Having the perfect posture is what makes an excellent model, so make sure your shoulders are back, and your back is upright and straight.

Another concern is what to do with your arms and legs while you pose. Models understand that to look good on camera, there has to be a certain amount of asymmetry in the way that they pose. It helps make model poses appear more authentic, so it’s something you should get used to as you career progresses. If your one arm is straight, the other should be slightly bent – to create a relaxed feel in the photos. Be conscious of your limbs when you strike a pose for complete control.

It might take you a few years of solid practice and instruction from a variety of photographers, but if you keep working on your model poses, eventually you’ll master them. See each new job as an opportunity to learn a little more about posing from an authority in the field. Make notes if you can, and test what body language goes well with certain emotions. Soon you’ll be in control of how you look on camera.

3 Myths About The Male Model

A lot has been said about male modeling in the past, but what’s really going on in the world of the male model? Being a male model means being highly competitive, highly motivated and willing to work hard on your body and career. While female models can get away with being ultra thin, most successful male models are fit – maintaining perfect bodies for photo shoots or runway jobs.

To become a male model means dedicating a large portion of your day to physical fitness, so that you look good on camera. The most popular models are usually around six foot in height and weigh about 165lbs or less. There’s a lot of bad information on the internet about male modeling, and when you start a career with a head full of misconceptions things can go wrong. Here are the top 4 myths about the male model.

Myth #1: The Field is Less Competitive

There are thousands of websites that claim that being a male model is somehow easier than being a female model. The field is less competitive, they say – so it’s easier to get that big break you’ve been waiting for. This is a load of rubbish. Male models have to work their way up the ranks, just like female models have to, only with greater demands on their time and work ethic.

Plus people in the industry know how cut-throat male modeling actually is, and would never say that it’s less competitive. If anything, it’s more difficult to become a successful male model – because companies have a clear idea of the look they want in their adverts and shows. That, coupled with the ideal body, doesn’t get you any closer to success. There is still insane competition that you have to overcome to get the job.

Myth #2: Your Body Must Be Trim

We’ve come across at least six sites that directly tell male models that their bodies mustn’t be too muscular. Obviously there is a line between trim and muscular, and looking like you’ve been taking steroids for several years. The trick here is to be lean, trim and muscular – or you won’t get work. Don’t think for one second that with an average body you’ll make it in male modeling. You won’t!

Myth #3: Your Career and Starting Age

While it’s true that male models begin their career a little older than females, there is a misconception in the industry that just because a model is male – they’ll have a longer career. This isn’t the case at all. In fact men, just like women, mature – and their looks change. It often means less work, and less money. Only the great male models survive to model in their thirties and forties. Otherwise male modeling has an expiry date too!

If you’re planning on taking the male modeling world by storm, then prepare for a long hard road. There is nothing easier about being a male model – you are faced with the same challenges, same competitive environment, and same selection process as the women in your field. This of course, means you’ll have to work just as hard to make it big.

Perfecting Your Public Profile

Onemodelplace is a great website for finding work and connecting with other models in your field. But once you’ve made the decision to post your portfolio on the platform, how do you know what’s going to work best? There are a few ways you can perfect your public profile, and get more connections with photographers. Keep in mind this site is mainly for glamour modeling, but it does have a commercial aspect to it as well.

Scanning Your Current Portfolio

If you’re serious about getting work on Onemodelplace, then you have to be very careful when selecting your images for upload. Many models feel that more is better, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! The bottom line is that a photographer only really needs to see you in a few choice shots, to decide whether they want to work with you – so make them count. If you have 50 photos, choose the best 10 to post on your profile.

Fake Tearsheet Photos

There is a lot of pressure in the modeling industry to have modeled for someone noteworthy, so what many models do is they create ‘fake’ adverts – thinking that this will be enough to persuade a talented photographer to hire them for work. If you are a professional glamour or commercial model, then there is no need to make fake adverts. In fact, they scream ‘amateur’ and that’s not something you want to advertise. Concentrate on classic, simple and genuine shots – leave out the frills and fake brand names.

Clean, Up-Market Images

Glamour modeling often involves naked or semi-naked shots, but this is no reason to upload 30 naked shots of yourself. If you want to be taken seriously as a model on Onemodelplace, only upload images that you would feel comfortable showing your mother or father. They don’t have to be sexy or provocative for the photographer to see that you have what they need. Loading nude images of yourself invites many photographers that work in the adult industry to contact you about work. That’s not ideal for the ambitious model.

Your Statistics on Display

On Onemodelplace, your profile or stats lets photographers know what kind of modeling you are interested in doing. Make it very clear that you aren’t interested in erotic nude shots, or anything of that nature.

Include your weight, height and skills stats very clearly on your profile, as photographers often look at these as soon as they begin considering you for a role or shoot. In your ‘general information’ section, don’t go on about how new you are to the modeling scene – instead run through your ideal working situation.

Keep your goals clear in your mind before you upload images to Onemodelplace. You don’t want to invite the wrong kind of attention, so work on creating a profile that prevents that from happening. Every few months update these photos with new ones, from jobs or a more recent shoot selection. And don’t forget to ask the photographer you work with to recommend you on your profile.

Before I forget, you can claim your free Model Mastery tips here.

The Top 4 Modeling Agencies Exposed

The top 4 modeling agencies in New York send models all over the world, on the best shoots for the most prestigious clients. If it’s your goal to make it big, then it should be your goal to secure representation from one of these modeling agencies. Their agents are well connected, and can open doors for you into the world of high fashion, or high paid commercial advertising. Let’s take a look at the top 4 agencies to target, when you’re looking for a jump start in your modeling career.

#1: Ford Models

Ford Modeling Agency is one of the biggest in the world, with branches all over Europe and the US. If you’re looking for cutting edge fashion and photographers that will blow your mind – then you’ll want to become a Ford model. To do this upload four simple portfolio shots to their ‘become a model’ section on their website. Then wait for a reply. Remember that Ford is one of the top modeling agencies in New York, so they don’t take on many new models.

#2: Elite Models

Elite is another giant in the modeling world, and bursting with high profile models that get the largest contracts. With four branches in the US and models that go straight to the top – to become an Elite model requires a certain look and dedication to hard work. In their ‘be discovered’ section you can send in your details – along with a few photos of yourself. They are very clear about what they want, which is mostly girls between 14 and 22 years old that are around 6 foot tall.

#3: Click Models

Click Modeling Agencies in New York are the hottest place for modern photographers to find fresh faces for fashion and print work. Coming in at number 3, Click is an excellent choice if you’re looking to further your modeling career in a hurry. They have a submissions section, where you can send your photos and stats for review. If they like what they see, they’ll set up a meeting – so be patient.

#4: Wilhelmina Models

The final agency is none other than Wilhelmina Models, a consistent leader in the modeling industry. With modeling agencies in New York attracting thousands of model applications every day, you need to have something special to be considered by Wilhelmina Models. There are neat instructions on their website about applying to become a model at their agency, so follow those carefully for a shot at representation.

These 4 modeling agencies in New York are among the best in the world, so keep on trying to get their attention. If you are fortunate enough to be signed with one of these agencies, your career will blossom a lot sooner than if you had to have gone with a smaller agency. Remember to follow their guidelines, and single out a certain agent to contact for better results. If you are rejected, then keep trying – trends and faces change, and you never know when yours will be latest thing!

The Secrets of Success When on a Shoot

The key to getting modeling jobs all the time is to understand what is expected of you when you’re on a shoot. Of course, it goes far beyond simply showing up, doing what you’re told and then leaving. Modeling, like any career, requires hard work and strategy. It doesn’t have to be a complex process, but there are things that you can do that will increase your chances of being hired again – by the same people.

You already know that you need an agent, and a great portfolio. Once you have these two essentials, it’s up to your performance at the go-sees, and the Art Director’s choice. Sometimes you won’t get the job, purely because the photographer involved found someone else more suitable. In this case it’s not your fault. Once you have been selected for the job – that’s when you can make a real impact. Let’s take a look at a few of the simple things you can do to get modeling jobs more often.

Be a Professional Model

Art Directors and photographers work with models all the time. They know what a professional model is supposed to be like. In such a competitive industry it’s up to you to be the splitting image of professionalism, so that they remember you the next time they are in the market for a model of your caliber. Take your job seriously, work hard and be on time, so that the experience is effortless for them. That’s how you make a good first impression.

The Right Attitude

Having the right attitude means being an active participant in the success of the shoot. These advertising professionals give their modeling jobs to models that have a positive attitude, no matter what they do or where they are. You need to use the experience you have to make suggestions where appropriate, and to make the shoot as easy as possible. Be happy, motivated and excited to help your employers make the best advert they can, and it will show. They’ll appreciate the effort.

Make Connections

While it’s always difficult getting modeling jobs, once you have one there are a few advantages on your side for more future work. The first, is that the company you’re working for likes you already – the second, is that it will almost certainly have more jobs for a model like you. Make a point of being friendly to everyone at the shoot, and introduce yourself to the people in charge.

If you are open, friendly and courteous enough, the company will remember you. They might even recommend you to other companies, because they are so impressed. Once you have done this, the ball is in their court. Under no circumstances should you phone, or contact a photographer after a shoot. This will quickly identify you as a problem, especially if you call them often. Make an impression, and leave them to contact you the next time they need someone with your talents.

Once you are in the position to meet the right people, and promote yourself in person – that’s when you can make a real difference in your career. The secret to success when on a shoot is to remember that this is your chance to impress the people that matter. You will begin to build yourself an excellent reputation in the industry, and word will get around that you’re the model to work with. That’s how you get more modeling jobs, more often!

4 Excellent Tips for Launching Your Modeling Career

If you’re looking to get the hottest tips on how to become a model, then you’ve landed on the right article! The modeling industry can be difficult to break into, but with the right information and drive, you can become a first rate model. All you need is a plan, or a checklist, that will guide you in the best direction possible. Here are four excellent tips to follow before you can become a successful model.

Tip #1: Selecting Your Future Goals

The best thing you can do for your modeling career is to be realistic about your goals. Choose what type of modeling you think suits you best and stick with it. Models get further in their careers when they are focused on the right form of modeling. This means that if you want to be a fashion model, but you’re too short – then you should choose commercial modeling, because you can get further in that specific branch. Learning how to become a model begins with knowing where you fit in best.

Tip #2: Build on Your Skill Sets

Before you become a model in demand, you’ll need to give yourself an unfair advantage over other models in your field. This means finding out how you can become a better model, right at the beginning of your career. Do make-up and hair styling courses to improve the way they look on a shoot. Practice your poses in the mirror, and do fake shoots to practice different emotional effects. Sharpen each skill needed to become a successful model, and your chances will increase rapidly!

Tip #3: Find a Helpful Agent

If you’re itching to discover how to become a model the smart way, then keep this in mind: all great models have agents! You need to find yourself an agent, but not any old agent – the one that is going to fight for your career. The only way to do this is to approach agents that you’ve researched, and who you think will be best for your career. If your agent is helpful, they’ll get you work, and more work means more exposure.

Tip #4: Grow Your Career as an Self-Marketer

Once you have an agent, the work doesn’t stop there. It’s your responsibility as a model to promote yourself, and get your name heard by people in the industry. There are several ways to do this, but the best way these days is to set up your own website on the internet. Learning how to become a model takes hard work, so remember that it’s up to you to expand your network and promote yourself. Think of yourself as a self-marketer, and find out how to grow your personal brand online.

These four tips are just a few select ways that you can discover how to become a model, using the right mindset and work ethic. If there’s one final thing you need to know about modeling, it’s that most models give up before they make it. Stay focused on your goals – and measure every decision that you make, so that you can give yourself the best chance possible of becoming a world class model.

Discovering The 5 Features They Always Look For

Modeling agencies often have their own ideas on what kind of models they are looking to represent. Based on particular looks that are in demand, agents can decide whether or not your face is marketable. It’s a highly selective process that is based on little more than personal preference. So how on earth are you ever going to know what these agencies look for in a model? There are some key features that are always present, that you can work on as a model.

Serious About Modeling

All modeling agencies want to know that you are 100% committed to your career as a model. They don’t want you to see it as a part time, fun way to make money. Modeling is a business where only the serious survive. If this means quitting your day job to model more often, then that’s what they expect of you. If you can show them that modeling is your primary commitment, they’ll see you as a great investment.

A Professional Attitude

There’s nothing worse than a model that has all the good intentions in the world, but can’t show up on time for a shoot. Being unprofessional in any way is a huge red flag for a modeling agency – they simply don’t have time for it. Instead they look for well-rounded models that will uphold their agency’s name, and impress clients to encourage repeat work. If you are professional, then they want you.

The Complete Package

Believe it or not, modeling agencies are always on the look out for the ‘complete package.’ This means that they’re on the hunt for a model that is friendly, well-mannered, well-spoken and has the perfect posture – to compliment their excellent body of course! A complete package means that the agent will have an easier time getting work for the model, because they tick all of the boxes. When there’s nothing wrong, it’s easy for things to be so right.

A Unique Look

We’re living in the age of emo’s and the gaming culture – which means stereotypical shots of handsome men and beautiful women are not the only options available anymore. Instead, modeling agencies have opened up to include unique looking models that personify this culture. A very thin, pale male model for example, is found more often in alternative magazines these days. If you have a unique look, you might be able to fit into a perfect niche in the modeling industry.

The Right Work Ethic

A model that works hard is more likely to become a model in demand, and that means more money for the modeling agencies. They want you to be able to work all the time, and have the right attitude while you’re doing it. This means constantly developing your skills as a model to improve your chances of reaching supermodel status one day. Lazy models never make it, so you can bet that modeling agents are always looking for hard working models who really want to succeed.

These key features are a permanent part of modeling agencies’ screening processes. If you have the look, but you don’t have all of these features – you might be turned down for a safer option. Keep in mind that it takes more than beauty to make a well rounded model become successful.
