First off, will Ford sell a lot of Mustangs? Yes. Is there a global market today which necessitates a more global design? Maybe. Do you need to kiss ass in order to sell a car in today’s world? Apparently so. Have I owned and loved Mustangs for over 20yrs, yes. I converted a 1965 to a Shelby Clone, and my ’92 Fox has several parts from the Motorsports catalog. But this is not about performance, this is simply about exterior design.

My brain makes an immediate conclusion that these two overall shapes are pretty much the same. I need more time to note the differences….I need to look further to see why someone says one car is a Mustang while the other is a G37. Oh really? Other than the color you could have fooled me. Looking at the C-Pillar, the quarter windows look extremely similar. The trapezoidal shape of both quarter windows end the same. The entire rear profile of both cars have very similar lines. How the rear spoiler of the Mustang extends outward and has a similar angle to the Infiniti. The point is, most people look at a car and see more of a big picture instead of the details, that’s what they remember. Especially on the C-Pillar, or the entire window profile, it is very memorable…it sticks in your brain. The new 2015 Ford Mustang has some very interesting and likable details, the front fascia corners have an emotive shape reminiscent of a horses mouth as it glares. The rear taillight area looks smaller and is better proportioned than the previous few model years with those strange gawky mis-shaped tailights. At least these on the 2015 Ford Mustang look interesting. However, overall the front-end still looks like a truck, and the clearly Aston-Martin inspired grill is as proudly there as ever. I do generally think the design of the 2015 Ford Mustang is better, however only in points. If you sum up the details, yes it’s cool. But that’s the point, why do I have to sum up a design to even think it’s good? The connection one gets from looking at a ’60s Camaro or ’60s Mustang is nearly instantaneous. I don’t have to look at every detail to know I like it. Why? Because the connection of those more simple details of the classic cars is easier to make for the brain. I don’t have so many dots to connect, so many details to figure out. Why do today’s car designers not seem to realize what parts of the car people look at the most?  I think everyone has forgotten how to tell a story and is simply relying upon special effects to make you think you’re having a good time. So today’s designers are much like today’s movie makers…they’ve simply forgotten what a car is. However, I still miss the design language of the ’50s, ’60s and some of the ’70s of all cars.
