What reportage wedding photography actually is

Reportage is journalism. It is the recording of an event from the outside, from an observed position, with the photographer functioning as a witness rather than a participant.

There is nothing wrong with that. War photography is reportage. Press photography is reportage. The intention is to document what happened with clarity and accuracy. The photographer’s role is to be present but separate, to capture without influencing, to report.

Applied to weddings this means a photographer who works from the edges of a room. Wide frames, full scenes, the event as it unfolds from a distance. You will see the whole picture but you may not feel it.

Reportage is a cousin to documentary. It shares the commitment to capturing real moments rather than constructed ones. But the relationship between the photographer and the subject is fundamentally different and that difference shows up in the photographs.

What documentary wedding photography actually is

Documentary is intimate. The photographer is not outside the story looking in. They are inside it.

That position is earned rather than assumed. It comes from the trust that builds between a photographer and the people they are photographing over weeks and months before the wedding day arrives. By the time I’m standing in a ceremony room or in the middle of a dance floor I’m not a stranger with a camera. I’m someone the couple and their closest people have come to know and feel comfortable around.

That changes everything.

When people trust you they stop performing for you. They stop being aware of the camera in the way that makes photographs feel stiff or self-conscious. They return to themselves. And that is when the real moments surface.

It is a relationship. The images it produces are a record of that relationship as much as they are a record of the day.

The narrative question

There is another distinction worth making.

Reportage records. Documentary narrates.

A collection of reportage images from a wedding will show you what happened. A collection of documentary images will tell you who these people are. There is a sensibility to documentary work, an awareness of itself, a thread that runs through the images and connects them into something coherent. The photographer is making choices not just about when to press the shutter but about what the story is and how to tell it.

That requires knowing the couple. Understanding the relationships that define them. Recognising which moments carry meaning and which are surface. You cannot do that from the outside of a scene. You have to be in it.

What couples actually mean when they say they want candid photos

Most couples who come to me have a clear instinct about what they want even if the language around it is slightly blurred. They show me references. They describe a feeling. What they’re pointing at almost every time is a specific kind of documentary wedding photography. People at rest. Relaxed and completely present. Unaware of or unbothered by the camera. Whether they’re looking at the lens or not almost doesn’t matter. What matters is that they’re real.

That quality is not produced by a photographer standing back and waiting. It is produced by a photographer who has done the work before the day to make their presence feel normal and safe. Who knows when to get close and when to hold back. Who understands that the most important frame of the day might be a quiet moment between two people in a corner of the room that nobody else noticed.

At Emily and Cariston’s spring wedding in Bristol the frames I value most are not the grand wide shots of the Orangery or the group portraits against Goldney Hall. They are the tender moment at the end of the ceremony and the night portraits by the tower when the day had fully released into itself. Those frames came from being trusted. That feeling was joy. Uncomplicated, unperformed and completely theirs.

As a documentary wedding photographer this is the kind of day I live for. Nothing manufactured. Everything earned.

Bristol Registry Office

The day began at Bristol Registry Office in the heart of the city. The interior is rich and warm, deep red walls and a grand civic facade that carries a kind of weight without being heavy. It’s a space that asks something of you and Emily and Cariston gave it everything.

What struck me during the ceremony was how present they were with each other. Not performing for the room, not playing to the camera. Just genuinely there. The connection between them was quiet and certain and I found myself getting close rather than pulling back, because that’s where the feeling was.

The tender moment at the end of the ceremony is the frame I keep returning to. Nothing directed. Nothing asked for. Just two people at the exact centre of their day, together.

I was shooting on Kodak Gold 200 in my Nikon F100 alongside digital throughout. The red interior responded to film in a way that digital handles differently. Richer, more considered, slightly slower in the best possible sense.

Arriving at Goldney Hall, Clifton

From the registry office the day moved to Goldney Hall in Clifton, one of Bristol’s most quietly extraordinary spaces. The Orangery sits within the hall’s grounds and it earns its reputation. Light fills it from every angle. The garden opens out around it and at the far end of the grounds stands the iconic tower, the kind of architectural detail that photographers and location scouts have been quietly grateful for across decades of television and film productions.

On arrival the light was doing something particular. Early April, full sun, the kind of spring brightness that is sharp rather than golden but lands beautifully on film. I pulled Emily and Cariston aside almost immediately for portraits. Quick, instinctive, making full use of what the light was giving us. Those frames have a spontaneity to them that comes directly from the moment rather than from planning.

This is something I always try to explain to couples before the day. The portrait session doesn’t have to be a formal interruption. When the light is right and the energy is right it can be the most natural fifteen minutes of the whole day. Emily and Cariston had been slightly apprehensive beforehand about whether they’d feel comfortable in front of the camera. By the time we were in that light at the Orangery that apprehension had gone completely. It always does. After more than 400 weddings I’ve yet to find a couple who didn’t settle into it once the day was underway.

The Orangery and the day in full

What defined Emily and Cariston’s wedding beyond the setting was the democratic quality of it. This was a day that celebrated their friendship group as much as their family. The two things aren’t in competition but when a couple’s closest friends are as central to the day as their relatives it shifts the energy. It becomes more celebratory than ceremonial. The whole day felt like a party that happened to include a wedding rather than a wedding that eventually became a party.

They moved through their guests with a laid back ease that never dropped. No obligation, no performance, just genuine pleasure in the company of the people they’d chosen to be there. The speeches had that same quality. Honest and personal and specific to them.

Evening on the lawn

As the light dropped the day didn’t slow. Emily and Cariston were on the lawn with their friends, dancing and celebrating in the way that only happens when a group of people have been building towards something together all day. The kind of scene you cannot direct or manufacture. You get yourself in the right position, you read where the energy is going and you stay ready.

The night portraits in front of the tower were the last frames of the day and among my favourites. The tower lit against the dark, the couple in front of it, the whole weight of the day behind them. Shot on film. The grain in those frames feels right.

This is what film wedding photography does particularly well. It holds the atmosphere of a moment rather than just recording it. The Kodak Gold 200 throughout the day gave Emily and Cariston’s wedding a warmth and texture that suits who they are.

Emily and Cariston wanted a day that felt real and intentional and completely theirs. No filler, no convention for convention’s sake. Just an honest celebration of their relationship and the people who matter most to them.

It starts with connection

Connection is the foundation of everything I do. Not a technique, not a style, not an aesthetic. The actual emotional currency of a wedding day.

What I mean by connection is specific. The way your partner looks at you when you’re not looking back. The moment your dad realises the day is almost over. Two old friends who haven’t seen each other in years finding each other across a room. The way you’ve placed your grandmother’s brooch on your bouquet and the only person who notices is your mum.

These moments exist whether or not a camera is there. My job is to anticipate them, be in the right place when they happen and have the trust of the people involved so that my presence doesn’t change anything.

Documentary wedding photography that isn’t rooted in connection becomes something else entirely. It becomes a series of technically competent pictures of people who are aware they are being photographed. That’s not what I’m after and it’s not what my couples are after either.

The misconception about standing back

There is a version of documentary wedding photography where the photographer stays at the edge of the room, shoots long and waits. Sometimes that’s exactly right. A wide frame that shows the scale of a moment, the architecture of a space, the way a hundred people are all looking in the same direction.

But emotion is rarely found at distance.

At Hannah and Max’s wedding in Clerkenwell the traditional Jewish and Assyrian dancing was the moment the whole day released. Max being lifted on a chair, Hannah thrown into the air by the groomsmen, guests who’d never met before that morning holding hands in a circle. I didn’t stand back and document the scene. I got close and shot wide, putting myself in the middle of it.

That’s a choice rooted in experience. You read the room, you read the energy and you make a decision about where the feeling actually lives. Sometimes it lives in the wide shot. Often it lives in the face of someone who doesn’t know you’re there.

Getting that shot requires something that has nothing to do with camera settings.

Trust is the real technique

Almost every couple I speak to tells me they find it awkward being in front of a camera. I understand that completely. It’s a reasonable thing to feel.

What I tell them is this. On your wedding day it will feel entirely natural to have your photograph taken. I know that’s hard to believe when you’re sitting in a coffee shop a year out from the wedding, but I’ve shot over 400 weddings and I am very familiar with the emotional flow that only a wedding day produces. You will be so present, so full of feeling, so surrounded by the people you love most, that a camera will be the last thing on your mind.

My job before the day even begins is to make sure they believe that. Not by reassuring them with words but by showing them through how I work. I get to know my couples properly. I understand the relationships that define them, the details that matter, the moments they’re hoping for even if they haven’t said so out loud. By the time the wedding arrives they’re comfortable with me being in their space. They can let themselves go.

That behind the scenes access, that quiet permission to be close, is built over months not minutes. It’s why the approach I take to wedding photography in London is the same regardless of the couple, the venue or the day. Get to know them. Observe. Show them you’re on their side.

What this means for your wedding day

A prescriptive photographer brings a shot list and works through it. There’s a place for that but it isn’t documentary.

What I bring is attention. An understanding of your relationship and the people in your world. A sense of where the feeling is going to be before it arrives. And the experience to know that the moments that will matter most to you in twenty years are almost never the ones you planned.

The couple portrait session is a good example. Most couples I work with are slightly apprehensive about it. What I’ve found, consistently, across hundreds of weddings, is that it becomes one of their favourite parts of the day. Not because I’ve directed them into beautiful frames, but because it gives them fifteen minutes away from the centre of the whirlwind. A moment to just be together and enjoy each other’s company. The photographs are a byproduct of that.

That’s documentary wedding photography to me. Not a style applied to a day. A way of working that puts the couple at the centre of every decision, trusts that the moments will come and is ready when they do.

It’s exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph.

As a documentary wedding photographer in London, days like this are why I do what I do. The moments aren’t manufactured. They arrive and you’re there to catch them.

Morning prep at 100 Shoreditch

The day began at 100 Shoreditch on Hannah’s suite’s balcony terrace, high above the street with East London spread out behind Hannah and her bridesmaids. The light was that particular kind of British spring light — bright, clean, slightly hard. The kind that doesn’t flatter everything but when it works, it really works.

Hannah’s dress was a two-piece. A fitted corset and a ballerina-length skirt that moved beautifully every time she did. Friends arrived gradually, joining family on the terrace, drinks in hand, the city below them. It was relaxed in the way that only happens when the people in the room genuinely like each other.

I was shooting on Kodak Gold 200 in my Nikon F100 alongside digital. Film reads that kind of morning well. The colour response on Kodak Gold brought a warmth to the light that straight digital wouldn’t have given me in quite the same way. The ceremony at Bourne and Hollingsworth

Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings sits in Clerkenwell, one of London’s quietest and most characterful corners. The ceremony took place in their studio space which is minimalist and considered. Two large floral arrangements framed the end of the aisle. Free-flowing, generous, just enough.

Hannah and Max entered together. That choice told you everything about how they approach things.

The ceremony held a Jewish blessing and words from close friends. It felt deeply personal rather than formal. The kind of ceremony where you’re aware everyone in the room is actually listening. Max spoke with complete honesty. There was laughter and there were tears and at the end of it Max broke the glass, honouring his Jewish heritage. The room erupted.

The bridesmaids had quietly practised their walk beforehand, which I caught. Those small, unguarded moments before a ceremony begins are often among the most honest frames of the day.

The reception — where it really came alive

The main reception space at Bourne and Hollingsworth is part private members bar, part conservatory. Plants everywhere. Colour. Afternoon light pushing through the large windows at an angle that Kodak Gold handled beautifully, pulling out warmth from a day that was bright rather than golden.

During the drinks reception, Hannah’s parents spoke and then Max. At the wedding breakfast, Max’s parents spoke along with Hannah’s sister and Hannah herself. So did Max’s best man. Every single speech landed. Honest, warm, funny in the right places. The kind of speeches that make you feel like you understand two people completely by the end of them.

But the moment the day turned into something else entirely was the dancing.

Two cultures, one dance floor

First came the Assyrian dance. Then the Hora.

Nearly every guest joined both. The Assyrian dance unfolded through the drinks reception. A long chain of people moving together, generations mixed, no one sitting it out. It was the kind of moment that photographs itself if you stay out of the way and pay attention.

Then the Hora. The energy shifted completely. Max was lifted on a chair. Hannah was thrown into the air by Max’s groomsmen. At one point Max jumped over a line of his friends lying flat on the floor. The room was loud and joyful and completely uninhibited. Pure release. The frame I keep coming back to is Hannah in the air, mid-flight. Pure joy with London just out of frame behind her.

This is what London does better than almost anywhere. Two cultures, two sets of traditions, one room, no friction. Just people celebrating together. It felt specific to this city in a way I find hard to put into words but very easy to photograph.

This is also what I love about my role as a London wedding photographer. You cannot direct a Hora. You cannot choreograph someone being thrown in the air. You just have to be ready, be in the right place and let it happen.

Shooting Hannah and Max’s wedding on film and digital

I shoot every wedding as a film and digital hybrid. Film for the texture, the colour response, the way it slows me down slightly and makes me more deliberate. Digital for the flexibility, the low light moments, the speed when I need it.

On Kodak Gold 200 the afternoon light at Bourne and Hollingsworth had a quality I couldn’t have predicted but was very glad to have. The conservatory, the plants, the warm skin tones… it all translated in a way that felt right for a day like this.

Spring weddings in May provide slightly softer light and fewer tourists. Early October can also work well for couples wanting a more private atmosphere.

Wind is a consideration on coastal terraces. An experienced planner will account for this when positioning ceremony seating and decor.

The photographer observes. Anticipates. Responds. There is minimal direction outside of an agreed portrait time. Moments are not constructed for the camera. Reactions are genuine because they are not prompted. During speeches, I photograph people listening. During preparation, I photograph interaction rather than styling details alone. On the dance floor I capture energy as it unfolds.

The goal is to record behaviour and atmosphere.

In London where weddings often move between venues and through busy streets this approach feels natural. It adapts to real life rather than reshaping it.

What Editorial Wedding Photography Means

Editorial wedding photography draws influence from fashion and magazine work.

It involves more direction. Poses are considered. Composition is carefully arranged. Couples may be guided into specific lighting or positions for impact. This approach can create striking imagery. At high end venues in Mayfair or Kensington editorial photography can look polished and refined. It suits couples who enjoy being directed and want a curated visual narrative.

There is nothing wrong with this approach. It is simply different.

How It Feels on the Day

The practical difference is not just visual. It affects the atmosphere.

With a documentary approach you are not constantly repositioned. The camera blends into the day. Guests are less aware of being photographed.

With an editorial approach, you may spend longer on portraits. You may pause conversations to adjust positioning. You may repeat moments for clarity. Some couples enjoy that structure. Others prefer to remain immersed in the day.

The question is not which is better. It is which suits you.

The London Factor

London weddings add another layer.

Small preparation spaces in flats or hotels in Islington or Mayfair do not lend themselves easily to heavy staging. Registry offices such as Chelsea Old Town Hall run to tight schedules. Streets are busy. Space is limited.

Documentary photography works well in these environments because it requires less interruption.

Editorial photography can also work in London but it requires planning and protected time. Without that it can feel rushed.

London rarely offers consistent bright sunshine. More often you get soft grey skies, low winter light or strong directional sun between buildings. Film handles these transitions smoothly.

Kodak Portra 400 on medium format absorbs soft window light in preparation rooms in areas like Notting Hill or Hackney without making skin look flat. It also protects highlights when sunlight hits pale stone outside venues such as Chelsea Old Town Hall.

In winter when daylight fades early film maintains atmosphere without turning the scene harsh. I love film at this time of day.

For much of my portrait work I use Portra 400 on medium format. This format produces depth and separation without obvious blur. It suits formal venues in Mayfair and Kensington where architecture is refined. It also works beautifully in simple London streets where texture matters.

Portrait time in London is usually short. We might step outside a reception in Soho for ten minutes. Medium format film encourages focus. A small number of carefully composed frames rather than endless variations.

35mm Film for Movement

Alongside medium format I often use 35mm film, particularly Kodak Gold 200.

Gold 200 has warmth and character that works well in daylight around London streets. Guests laughing outside Islington Town Hall. Couples walking through Marylebone. It captures energy without over sharpening colour.

In the evening Gold 200 paired with flash brings clarity to dance floors in pub receptions or hotel basements. The flash adds structure while the film keeps tone grounded. Chef’s kiss.

This combination works well in East London venues where lighting is mixed and unpredictable.

Film and Registry Offices

London registry offices operate on tight schedules. Ceremonies are efficient. Space can be limited.

Film works well here because it does not require heavy staging. It adapts to existing light and preserves skin tones across different interior colours. Outside Chelsea Old Town Hall where guests gather quickly after the ceremony film captures both architecture and expression without pushing contrast too far.

Timing matters more than volume. Knowing when to press the shutter is more important than how many frames you take.

What Film Does Not Do

Film is not magic. It does not remove the need for planning.
