Jai & Neil ~ Suffolk Wedding at Butley Priory

I travelled up to Suffolk at the end of March for the wedding of Jai and Neil at Butley Priory. It was an emotional day, filled with laughter and sometimes tears- ending with a great party. Dusty the dog was ever present and seemed to enjoy himself too. Thank you guys for choosing me to tell the story of your day, it was amazing. January & February 2013 Adventures

In what must be the coldest start of a year in my living memory, I’ve been out and about, trying new things, messing about with new cameras. I’ve also shot new images for folk/ blues singer Brooke Sharkey. Brooke’s beautiful ballads can be heard most nights at quirky venues across London and I think she has big things in store for her. A family friend has donated to me a set of glass plate negatives, all shot in and around the beautiful seaside town of Clovelly in North Devon. I’ve managed to get one of the negatives developed, and the image below shows that some Victorians/ Edwardians knew how to relax! Unlike most stuffy portraits from the time, this informal image shows maybe a group of friends or family after what looks like a tea and cake picnic.. I’ll be getting all the images developed and will try and discover more about the background behind who took these photographs, and who is in them!

One of my favourite cameras is a mint green Diana F lomography camera. Here are a few shots from it- These cameras (more info here) are so much fun- you really dont know what you will get back from the printers.

Finally, these two panoramas are taken with the new iPhone 5, and edited using the VSCO cam app. I have experimented with the Visual Supply Company’s beautiful film emulations in Lightroom, in editing, and their app is easy to use and gives a gorgeous tone to these landscapes.

The wedding season kicks off in a couple of weeks for me, and I cant wait. First up is a central London wedding, with reception in Hoxton.. should be a great day. Dave x

Bridal Shoot Preview ~ Timeless Black & White

Today I’ve been thinking about black and white photography. I love the timeless feel and atmosphere that black and white images suggest, the classic simpleness of an image which perhaps were it in colour, might not have the same impact, or power to move the viewers emotions. It can zero in your attention to a look, like Tim’s on seeing his lovely bride Hannah for the first time on their wedding day ~

I also like the simple chic that black and white can give an image. In this recent bridal shoot, the image seems to just work in black and white.

Now, I don’t think black and white photography suits my taste or style for a whole wedding- there is something magical about capturing the atmosphere through colour, and the greater depth that colour gives. It is just that, for some moments, like the look that Chris gives Emma during their ceremony (see their wedding here) ~

Or Joyce caught unaware to give a beautiful portrait during her and Ben’s drinks reception (see their wedding here), black and white works. In these photos, what I love about black and white is shown so well- you notice straight away what is important about the moment- the emotion, the expression, the moment captured.

I am a big fan of colour and this is why I shoot and edit in colour- most of us see in colour and for pure atmosphere nothing beats it. But for a certain few photos, the timelessness of black and white is perfect. Dave x

Loulou & Stu ~ Married ~ Sheffield Botanical Gardens

Vogue Italia and looking forward to the year ahead

This time last year I was running to catch a plane to Beziers to shoot at the amazing Chateau Les Carrrasses (See that shoot here), after shooting an editorial inspired by the Great Gatsby (See shoot here) the day before. And I visited my favourite place in the world, Paris. It was FUN. This January, with all the overcast weather and a fairly quiet month, I’ve been looking back at January last year and thinking how awesome it was. I’m planning things for this year which will be epic, and ALL of the couples who’s weddings I’m shooting this year are such cool people- from Suffolk in March to Cornwall in October, I’ll be capturing the story of their big days across the UK and beyond and I can’t wait.

In the meantime, this cheered me up on a cold January day.

This is one of three images I have had published on Italian Vogue’s website! Being published on Italian Vogue is a milestone for my editorial work and has definitely cheered me up! I’ll be starting to photograph 2013′s couple’s engagement shoots soon in the spring, and nothing makes me more happy than doing this- photographing people in love. My editorial work gives me the chance to practise my creativity, the experience of which I’ll be using to discreetly capture the story of my couples weddings.. cant wait.
