That he wouldn't sign another record deal. That the 2006 "American Idol" was through.

"It's about driven me crazy to hold my tongue," Hicks says. "I've wanted to talk about this for three months, but I've been patient and trying to be smart about choosing my battles."

The battle, it seems, is over.

Hicks, who turned 32 on Tuesday, announced on his birthday that he had signed a deal to release his new CD in February 2009. It'll be on his own Modern Whomp Records label through Artist to Market (A2M), which gives the Birmingham native control over his recording destiny.

"I was offered a plethora of record deals, some traditional record deals and some non-traditional record deals," Hicks says. "It's been very hard not to just hop on the first one that was offered, but during that time when there was a lot more speculation that I might never sign one again, it couldn't have been further from the truth."

He calls the A2M deal "very cutting edge."

"In today's marketplace, having the control as the artist is key," Hicks says. "I'm in control of where I spend my marketing dollars, who I want to record with, and in control of the companies I hire out. It allows me a really focused release. Basically, I am my own record label."

What that means for the upcoming CD is that the bulk of it will be written or co-written by Hicks, who cut his musical teeth in bars in and around Birmingham.

"I've always been a singer-songwriter, and that's going to be able to surface a lot more than it did on the last record," he says. "On the last one, things had to move at such a quick pace that the actual art of songwriting couldn't really be seen on the last record."

Hicks is in pre-production of the CD now, working with producer Simon Climie (Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Faith Hill) in the studio.

"I don't have a title for it, yet," Hicks says. "I'm kind of waiting for it to hit me."

Announcement of the new record deal comes just after Hicks' stint in the Broadway production of "Grease" comes to an end, and just before he hits the road as that show's Teen Angel for the national tour beginning Dec. 1.

"It was such a success and such a great way for me to learn a new craft," Hicks says of his Broadway debut. "I feel like if I'm going to have longevity in the entertainment industry, I've got to cover all aspects. I have to reinvent myself."

The national tour of "Grease" will offer a unique hybrid for Hicks, he says.

"We're going to cross-promote this record with the `Grease' tour," he says. "I'll be allowed to perform my single in the show on tour."

Most importantly, it offers fans a chance to experience Hicks live, which he says is crucial to his success.

"There's such a live aspect to me," he says. "You put me on the radio, and you can't see me, you can't feel me, you can't touch me, so it's easy to count me out in that regard. On the road, that's where you really make your mark and have your longevity."

So don't count Hicks out just yet. He's only getting started, he says, and he doesn't pay attention to the naysayers.

"I hear those things, but I'm not into the talk, I'm into the walk," he says.

E-mail: aharvey@bhamnews.com

A Very Happy Birthday Deal for Taylor!

From: http://uk.sys-con.com/node/701997

Taylor Hicks Exclusively Partners With A2M to Release Album, Due Winter 2009

Birthday Boy Hicks Signs Cutting Edge Deal Unlike Any Other Idol
By: PR Newswire

Oct. 7, 2008 09:01 AM
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- He's "Takin' It to the Streets" on "American Idol" -- now Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks will be takin' it more directly to the people. Celebrating his birthday today, Hicks has tapped the independent artist services company Artist To Market (A2M) to release his much-buzzed-about new album, due in stores on February 10, 2009. The platinum-selling singer-songwriter will be releasing the new title with complete control of direction and ownership of his masters on his solely owned and operated, Modern Whomp Records label. Hicks is currently in the studio with producer Simon Climie (Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Faith Hill).
"In this digital age, when artists can connect more directly with audiences, this is a partnership that makes a lot of sense," says Hicks. "I'm very much enjoying being in the studio with Simon working on the new album and look forward to releasing it through A2M early next year."
"We at A2M are very excited to be working with the team at Modern Whomp Records on this release," said Paul Ignasinski, General Manager of A2M. "As the industry continues to evolve, it's exciting to see significant artists approach the marketplace in a new way, and truly take control over their own destiny. This is exactly why A2M was built in the first place -- to provide a service platform for these artists to prosper on their own terms."
During the last two years, Taylor Hicks has seen his self-titled Arista debut album certified platinum, performed with the likes of Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne, toured through Asia, penned the brisk-selling Random House memoir Heart Full of Soul, spent time in NY this past summer for his three-month Broadway debut as "Teen Angel" in Grease, and will take Grease on a national tour beginning December 1.
In August Hicks' Modern Whomp Records released Early Works (a reissue compilation of his two independent albums, In Your Time and Under the Radar) through the Welk Music Group. Hicks is also planning the release of Whomp at the Warfield, a DVD showcasing a live performance by Hicks and his band at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.
About Artist To Market Distribution:

Launched in 2005, Artist To Market Distribution (A2M) is an independent music distributor and artist services company designed to work directly with artists, labels, and content owners to streamline the supply chain, provide flexible service solutions, and deliver new product to the marketplace at a lower cost. Over the past two years A2M has partnered with a diverse group of platinum and multi-platinum artists including Dolly Parton, Tracy Lawrence, Tommy Lee, John Michael Montgomery, Sinead O'Connor, Unwritten Law, and Tracy Byrd, in addition to critically-acclaimed newcomers, The Cool Kids. Taylor Hicks made his debut on Broadway in the role of "Teen Angel" this past summer.

Taylor Hicks achieved widespread fame in 2006 as a contestant on the hugely successful FOX singing competition "American Idol." On May 24, 2006, Hicks was named the winner of the fifth season of "Idol" with over 63.4 million votes in total. Winning the title over Katharine McPhee, the announcement was made during the live finale episode which aired to a worldwide audience of over 200 million viewers.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Taylor Hicks' passion for music began at an early age. He toured the Southeastern Unites States during his teenage years and released two independent albums. Known for his energetic performances with influences derived from classic soul, blues and R&B music, he quickly grew a large fan base among the millions of viewers and voters who tuned in to "Idol" each week. His fans ultimately dubbed themselves the "Soul Patrol." Immediately following "Idol," Hicks signed a
recording contract with 19 Records Limited / Arista Records. His debut single, "Do I Make You Proud," debuted in the 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was subsequently certified Gold. His eponymous debut album, Taylor Hicks was released on December 12, 2006 and debuted in the 2 spot on the Billboard 200 charts and was later certified as a Platinum Album. After signing a book deal with Random House, Hicks' memoir Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way was released in July of 2007. Taylor is currently in the studio recording his next album to be released in early 2009.

"I had such a great experience on Broadway for the last three months," says Hicks. "This is such a great opportunity to visit fans and new fans across the country while bringing them a great Broadway show!"

This new production of GREASE™, which opened on Broadway on Sunday, August 19, 2007, was born out of NBC's landmark talent competition TV series, "Grease: You're The One That I Want." The weekly talent competition drew 90 million viewers, and America voted for its favorite contestants to play the lead roles of Sandy and Danny on Broadway. Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall (The Pajama Game, Wonderful Town), GREASE™ features book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

After spending a hopelessly devoted summer with Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in town, Danny Zuko's world is thrown upside down when Sandy appears at Rydell High on the first day of school. What follows is a rock n' roll celebration of growin' up, cruisin' with friends and goin' steady. The new production of GREASE™ features songs from the smash hit 1978 motion picture for the first time ever in a Broadway production including "Sandy," the Academy Award nominated song "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Grease" and "You're the One That I Want" - both of which were 1 hits on the Billboard Top 100 list. These songs will be heard in addition to the Jacobs/Casey songs made famous by the original stage production including "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightnin'" and "We Go Together."

GREASE™ features scenic design by Tony Award nominee Derek McLane (The Pajama Game), costume design by two-time Tony Award winner Martin Pakledinaz (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Kiss Me Kate), lighting design by Tony Award winner Kenneth Posner (The Coast of Utopia, Wicked) and sound design by Brian Ronan (Spring Awakening, Curtains).

GREASE™ is produced on tour by Paul Nicholas and David Ian, Nederlander Presentations, Inc. and Terry Allen Kramer by arrangement with Robert Stigwood.

Full casting for the tour will be announced at a later date.

The schedule for the national tour of GREASE™ is as follows:

- December 2 – 7, 2008 at the Providence Performing Arts Center, Providence, RI
- December 9 – 14, 2008 at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, East Lansing, MI
- December 16 -21, 2008 at Palace Theatre, Columbus, OH
- December 30, 2008 – January 4, 2009 at the Orpheum Theatre, Minneapolis, MN
- January 6 – 18, 2009 at the Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, IL
- January 20 – February 1, 2009 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Cincinnati, OH
- February 3 – 15, 2009 at the Hippodrome Theatre, Baltimore, MD
- February 24 – March 1, 2009 at the Music Hall, Tucson, AZ
- March 3 – 8, 2009 at the Civic Theatre, San Diego, CA
- March 10 – 22, 2009 at the Pantages Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
- March 24 – April 19, 2009 at the Golden Gate Theatre, San Francisco, CA
- April 21 – 26, 2009 at Keller Auditorium, Portland, OR
- April 28 – May 10, 2009 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, CA
- May 12 – 30, 2009 at the 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle, WA

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?f...9c-9a3d20a5c4f2

http://www.myspace.com/taylorhicks

Fan interview with Taylor

One of my favorite Soul Patrollers, Caryl won the phone call with Taylor and she did a fabulous job interviewing him! Here is a link to her blog! Thanks for a fabulous job Caryl!!!

Fan interview with Talor Hicks

http://a-caryling.blogspot.com/2008/09/taylor-tuesday-how-do-you-talk-to-angel.html

2009 Taylor Hicks Calendars!

This announcement has been posted a many Taylor Hicks fansites. "I turned around to my dad and said, 'That's exactly what I want to do.'"
Three years and countless hours of practicing later, 8-year-old Tallan is a blues guitar prodigy. He's played in bars and clubs, including the House of Blues in Chicago, and even jammed with Les Paul and Jackson Browne. He has a summer of festivals scheduled and has drawn interest from venues worldwide.
And what, you might ask, would a kid not even in the third grade have the blues about? The state of Wisconsin for one, and some possibly jealous older musicians for another.
An anonymous e-mail sent to state officials complained that Tallan was too young to perform in taverns and nightclubs because of state child labor laws. His booking agent even got an anonymous letter threatening her with death if she keeps booking him.
When Tallan's father read him the state's letter saying he couldn't play clubs anymore (he can still play festivals), the boy's response — like his music — seemed beyond his years.
"He goes, 'It's not how many times you get knocked down but it's how many times you get back up and go forward,' Carl Latz said his son told him. "And I told him that's exactly what this is all about and if nothing else this letter just taught you a life lesson."
The lesson can be stiff: Each day he performs, the employer can be fined $25 to $1,000 and the parent from $10 to $250.
Jennifer Ortiz of the state Equal Rights Division said her agency has a responsibility to enforce the law once it becomes aware of a violation.
"Well, the law prohibits it, and the Legislature enacted the laws to protect the health, safety and welfare of all children."
Latz, who also is Tallan's manager, has asked a legislator for help changing the law but it's unclear whether any action will be taken.
Latz received the letter a few days before Tallan was to perform at Lil Downtown Lounge in suburban Milwaukee, where club co-owner Michelle Boche said the boy always packed the place when he sat in with other musicians.
Latz claims that two weeks before getting the letter he overheard local blues guitarist Jammin' Jimmy, whose real name is James Kemeny, say Tallan shouldn't be in a bar and he was going to turn him in.
Kemeny, who's been playing for 44 years, denied badmouthing Tallan.
"It seems totally unbelievable that somebody would even go to that extreme to send a letter to somebody, let alone looking to find something about child labor laws," Kemeny said.
Boche said she has received backlash from musicians and area bar owners because she supports Tallan. Some have tried to take patrons away, she said. Some even called in fake incidents to police, causing them to look for guns or underage drinkers, she said.
"If my doors close and I never open again and this boy becomes successful, then I will be the happiest person in the world," she said.
Tallan's agent, Sharon Pomaville, said she received a threatening letter June 2 warning her to stop booking the boy. She thinks he's a local musician and believes he's harmless. Deputies came to her house, but she didn't want to pursue the case.
Greg Koch, 42, an internationally known guitarist and clinician for Fender Musical Instruments, called the backlash despicable.
He said most 8-year-olds don't have the strength or attention span to pursue guitar or can't endure the calluses.
"It's strange that a kid at this age would glean onto this particular kind of music and show the intensity and kind of the ability to function as kind of 8-year-old blues guy," he said.
Brad Tolinski, editor-in-chief of Guitar World magazine, said kid guitar prodigies are rare, with one emerging perhaps every four or five years.
"It would be unusual to find an 8-year-old who can play Joe Satriani licks," he said.
Carl Latz said there's no explanation for Tallan's blues connection other than he seems to have an old soul.
"I've had more people tell me, they say 'It's a kid's body but it has a 70-year-old dude inside,'" Carl Latz said.
Tallan, whose heroes are Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, has 13 guitars and endorsements from at least nine companies to use their equipment. He can read music but plays mostly from memory.
He has two bands — one with veterans called T-Man's Blues Project and another with 16-and-younger bandmates called Tallan "The T-Man" Latz and the Young Guns. He also sings and plays drums, harmonica, bass and piano.
Tallan said he likes to play guitar to "put smiles on people's faces" when they are having a bad day.
"It sounds awesome," he said. "I think it's so much you can do on the guitar."
He knows 30 to 40 songs and someday hopes to write his own. It was his idea to start playing in public.
"He drags me around," his dad said. "I don't drag him around."
Tallan said the problems he's faced have doing nothing to dampen his ambition to be a blues rock star when he grows up. Just the opposite, in fact.
"Because I got more inspiration, I got more sadness in me," Tallan said. "I'm just feelin' it."

Taylor Hicks Releases His Pre-'american Idol' Music, Makes Headway On New Album

From KBS Radio

By: Lauren Moraski
Taylor Hicks'early music is officially getting released. Before he won American Idol, Hicks had been writing and recording his own music and put together two independent albums. Now Modern Whomp Records will combine both sets, In Your Time and Under the Radar, into one reissued collection, which is available beginning today (August 12th), exclusively at Target.
Hicks said, "These two (original) albums represent who I am and who I am trying to represent as a songwriter. 'Nostalgic'and 'endearing'are the terms that best describe them."
All but one of the tracks were written by Hicks. Some song titles include "Soul Thing," "The Fall," "Hold On to Your Love," "The Deal," "Heart and Soul," "My Friend," and "Georgia."
Hicks has been making some headway on a new album, which he hopes to release by spring 2009.
Also expected out is a live DVD, called Whomp at the Warfield, which features Hicks'recent concert at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.
He's currently starring as Teen Angel in the Broadway production of Grease.

Today's the Day!

Taylor Hicks Early Works released TODAY at Target!

Not like any of us will forget.....

Just thought I'd mention it. :)

From the Library of...Taylor Hicks!

Thanks to the New York Post for this! He and I share some favorites in common! :)

IN MY LIBRARY: TAYLOR HICKS

August 10, 2008 --

One of Taylor Hicks' favorite books is the one the "American Idol" crooner wrote himself.

"I might not be the greatest speller," concedes the author and subject of "Heart Full of Soul," which came out last summer, "but it meant the world to me to express myself through my own words, as opposed to having so many questions thrown at me, post-'Idol.'

"Letting the fans connect with me without a filter - that'll always hold a special place in my heart!"

Lately, fans have been connecting with the Alabama-born crooner through "Grease," in which he has a small but showy turn as Teen Angel through Sept. 6. And while he's waiting to go onstage, he says, he often reads a newspaper (he majored in journalism and business before dropping out to sing) and books.

"You can probably go back and look at all the great songwriters in the world, and they'll tell you reading's the key to success," the silver-haired Soul Patroller tells The Post's Barbara Hoffman. "Being around words helps you write words."

Here's what else is on his bookshelf:

Texasville

by Larry McMurtry

I remember my grandmother and I reading "Texasville" together at the beach. It's about a lower-income family that strikes oil, and basically goes through changes. I was probably 8 or 9 years old, and I remember how funny Larry McMurtry was. He's a brilliant writer.

Charlotte's Web

by E.B. White

One of my favorite children's books. The message is great.

The Da Vinci Code

by Dan Brown

I think the book is better than the movie, personally - more detailed. How that story unfolds just blew me away.

The Seat of the Soul

by Gary Zukav

He talks about how, when we feel an intuition, we need to recognize and learn from it so we can use that sixth sense even more . . . It will be released on August 12th. A new album cover is also forthcoming!

I do wonder though what the benefit is to Taylor by having it exclusive through Target? I am unfortunately very un-knowledgable about these things, does anyone know? Please share if you do! Whatever the benefit is, I hope its a good one for our Taylor!

Taylor Hicks...in his Own Words!

Well, sort of!!!

From Taylor, On Amazon.com

Taylor Hicks has this Editorial Review for his Early Works, on Amazon:

Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

First and foremost, these two albums represent who I am and who I am trying to represent as a songwriter. "In Your Time" was a first attempt at recording songs that I had written at the time. Some songs that were really hitting home with me at the time. "Under the Radar" was a second attempt at a first attempt to try to record an album that resembled the production quality of Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat." The songwriting was getting better and my direction as an artist was getting clearer. Warmth in the production was the main goal; "nostalgic" and "endearing" are the terms that I like to use for these two records.
Thanks for going on the ride!
Taylor

Early Works Album Cover!

New album art for Taylor Hicks' Early Works

What do y'all think??? :)

Early Works Now Available via Pre- Sale!

Check it out Soul Patrol!!!

Early Works by Taylor Hicks (Audio CD - 2008)
Buy new: $11.98
Available for Pre-order.
