New Knotted Headband Snoods

Just made today are these knotted headband snoods and a tieback snood.

The cream colored snood on the top left has tiny heart patterns on it.

The white snood on the top right is made of cotton pointelle knit with lovely diamond patterns. The light-blue snood on the bottom right has embroidered stitching on the body. The brown floral batik print snood on the bottom left has a pleated quilt-like wide tapered headband with tails.

Tutorial: Sew in a Set-in Sleeve

Our Blouse Patterns always come with long sleeves. Like many standard sleeve patterns, ours has a sleeve cap that needs to be "eased" into the armhole (armscye) of the bodice. Like the following video tutorial demonstrates, there are various ways of sewing a set-in sleeve to the bodice. Use the one you are most comfortable doing.

An alternative style of sewing such a sleeve that is not mentioned in the video is to sew in a couple of tucks (small pleats) at the sleeve cap to ease in the sleeve and for styling purposes. You don't need to gather at all. You just sew the sleeve directly onto the armhole (also called a flat method in the video), without gathering, but with two little tucks, one on each side of the sleeve cap. This choice is entirely up to you.

However, if you prefer a smooth sleeve cap without any gathers or tucks, then you will have to do it the way the instructor shows you in the video.

Tutorial: Sewing Facing to Curved Neckline

This tutorial is useful when you need to construct a garment out of our Kosher Foundation Pattern Blouses for Women and Girls.

This tutorial uses a fusible interfacing to line the neck facing itself, but this is really optional and up to you.

The technique is pretty much standard and is very useful for beginner sewers.

This video shows you how to understitch, which is required when you sew the neck facing so that it won't flap out of place when the garment is worn.

The goal is to assist our beginner sewers on the various proven sewing techniques, that we too use in our garment construction. Here is one playlist of tutorials on how to sew a hidden zipper, a very important task in sewing a modest garment. A hidden or invisible zipper does not show when sewn correctly and is very modest. We use only hidden zippers for our garments.

Important tips to remember:

You can use any length of hidden zipper you like
You don't need to sew the seam before you place the zipper
You need a special invisible zipper foot, available for many machines

Kosher Mehadrin Sewing Patterns for Gathered A-line Skirt

We are very pleased to announce our A-line Skirt patterns for 4 different sizings - Women (XS-3XL), Plus Girls (6-14), and Standard Girls (6-14).

This skirt pattern meets all halachic requirements for Jewish Modesty (Tzniut). It has built-in hip ease of at least 4" and skirt length of 6" (mehadrin). It is designed with easy-to-sew and easy-to-wear elastic casing for the waistband, to accommodate small changes in girth sizing as a person increase or decreases her weight.

This skirt pattern can be used for making a kosher half-slip that matches the flair of the outer skirt. You can also make a double-sided skirt with this pattern with very minor changes on the casing width.

Modest and Kosher Sewing Patterns

Unprecedented but much anticipated, kosher and modest sewing patterns have finally arrived. Modestanytime.com and KosherPatterns.com are pleased to usher in a new set of foundation pattern blocks that are the basis for modest and refined garments, according to Halacha on Tzniut (Jewish modesty).

What makes our patterns kosher?

The Torah defines the parameters in which a woman's body has to be covered. The torso, or the main trunk of the body, has to be covered in its entirety. The torso is defined as the horizontal portion that starts at the base of the neck and has to be completely covered. Shoulders, collar bone, and the second back
cervical bone are all included in the torso and have to be covered. The arm, including the elbow, has to be covered as well. The fit of a kosher garment has to be at least semi-fitted. If it is relaxed-fit, the garment is rendered 'mehadrin' or refined. The garment has to be long enough so that when the woman stretches upwards, her upper body will not be accidentally exposed. Kosher Foundation Pattern Blocks for Women

Our premier product, The Kosher Foundation Pattern Blocks for Women, is available from extra small to extra large, based on standard women sizes. However, for many of us, we do not fit into the standard proportionate sizes. Not to worry, as we also offer a custom pattern to be made just for you. Our patterns are digital downloadable PDF files, ready to be printed on 8.5" by 11" paper.

This pattern is deemed kosher 'mehadrin' because

The neckline (based on the measurements given for this size) is designed to cover above the collarbone and the second back cervical bone, with ample ease for breathing room.
The sleeve block covers below the elbow, which is beyond the minimal requirements.
The length of the bodice block is at the hips which will prevent exposure of the upper body in a stretched position.
The design ease is 5.5 in (14 cm) at the bust and 4 in (10.2 cm) at the hips, which falls in the relaxed-fit definition in the garment industry. (Semi-fitted garment requires between 4 – 5 in ease at the bust.)

If you are a sewer, you can use this pattern to make a jewel-neck blouse with long sleeves, has ample ease at the bust and hips, measures at hip length, and closes with a back hidden zipper. If you are talented, you can also use this foundation pattern as a draft for styling enhancements, such as adding various collar styles, a front button or zippered opening, variant sleeve styles as well as stylings with yokes, gathers, pleats, etc.

Measuring Directions

Waist – Measure around the the waist. Tie a string around the waist to mark its location for later measurement

Bust – Measure around the fullest part of the bust.

Hips – Measure around the fullest part of the hips.

Back width – At the center back, locate the neck bone. Place your tape 15 cm below the neck bone and measure the back width from armscye to armscye.

Shoulder – Measure from the neck to the shoulder bone.

Neck size – Measure the base of the neck, touching the front collar bone.

Nape to waist – Measure from the back neck bone at the center back to the waist (marked by the string tied around the waist).

Waist to hips – Measure from the waist (marked by the string) to the hip line.

Waist to knee – Measure from the waist (marked by the string) to the knee.

Armscye depth – At the center back, measure from the neck bone down to the armhole level.

Sleeve length – Bend the arm and rest it the hips, then measure from the shoulder bone over the elbow to the wristbone above the little finger.

The most important measurement is the neck size, in our humble opinion, as it will determine the kosher certification of the garment.

Vintage Inspired, New Embroidered Skirt Designs

At ModestAnytime.com, we are inspired by vintage fashions that promote modesty. One of our favorites is the Victorian era. We handpicked a few selected features of this era and added embroidery details to produce our unique designs.

These skirts are available in girls and women sizes tailored to your personal measurements for the best kosher fit. Made with all-season Polyester-Rayon Gabardine in a variety of colors.

The skirt on the top left features a paperback waist (a vintage 80's style) with horizontal rows of embroidery across the top and bottom.

The skirt on the top right features six panels with three curved pin tucks across the bottom on each panel.

The skirt on the bottom left also features six panels and are inspired by the Victorian Regency Era that features rows of lace on the front center panel at the bottom. Each lace is actually a triple-layer! The seam line of each panel is embellished with a helix embroidery pattern.

The skirt on the bottom right is versatile in that it can be worn like pictured above or rotated to feature the triple-layer of shell tucks on the front and back.

All the above skirts are elasticized and rolled at the hemline.
