I ended up with a patch that generated 1 bar FM wave sequence. Each wave was created in real-time by modulating FM with a stepped LFO with each step at a 16thnote at 120bpm to accommodate slicing into a rack. I resampled, and then handed off the samples to AfroDJMac. He racked them up in Ableton Live's Sampler and created an entirely new performance instrument based on the harmonic content including the ability to select a wave or sweep through the wavetable with an LFO!

AfroDJMac did a very detailed post on the rack including some production notes and screen shots of my work. I’ll included the video below but direct you to his post for the details and the download links.
OUTPOST: AIRLOCK is a soundset made up of patches for U-HE's free shareware synthesizer Zebralette. The patches will also load into Zebra 2. This themed soundset picks up where “Sounds from a Distant Outpost” soundset left off and again takes place at the fictional dark and distant “outpost”. This outpost exists in the same “signals universe” as my two albums REBOOT and I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS. The 12 patches in this soundset will help you experience the journey through the airlock which connects the outer ring of the outpost to the first inner chamber. You might hear creatures along the way so stay alert.

What does it sound like when you mangle the sound of a florescent light being switched on with granular syntheis? "Emits a Photon" is the answer - a free granular synthesis patch for Camel Audio Alchemy. This sample was recorded in my dorm at Electro-Music 2010 Festival. Listen to the audio demo for some notes on how I created this patch. Modwheel controls filter.

To install:

In your Alchemy\Presets folder create a sub-folder called "Modulate This Patch Lab"

Download patchlab_emits_a_photon.zip

Unzip all files into the new folder

From Alchemy click "File->Load" then select "Emits a Photon MM.acp" and click "Open"

I’m very excited to start working with Waldorf Largo! It's shares 98% of it's architecture with Blofeld so it's been great experience to work with the architecture in soft synth form. I’ve actually created quite a few patches and thought I’d share one of my more crazy atmospheric patches called “Dolphin Jump Gate” as it shows off the awesome comb filter and FM on the Largo.

I have the filters setup in “Serial” mode. Filter 1 is a comb filter which colors the sound and Filter 2 is low pass to control brightness.

Modulate Notes:

Velocity controls Filter 2’s envelope velocity. Since filter 2 is set to a high-pass filter there more velocity you play with the brighter the overall sound.

Mod Wheel controls intensity of LFO1 which modulates Cutoff for Filter 1. Sweeping modulation cause a shearing effect. Mod Wheel also modulates Filter 1 panning.

Try playing some chords to create sub-harmonic “beating” effect. Turn the FM paramer up for Oscillator 3 to get even more sparkle.

A motion pad with vocal characteristics. Mod Wheel controls FXPingPong2Time. Use the Mod Wheel to add change speed and pitch of delays. I programmed “Crusher” so the patch works with it off and on. In the sample below, I use the same MIDI clip with Mod Wheel automation and record first with the crusher off and then with the crusher on. The Sequencer modulates resonance and bit crushing intensity.

One reason I like using Circle is it’s really easy to route modulation and quickly grasp modulation routings. Just drop the colored circle from a modulation source and drop it on a modulation target.

I left you a little home work this time. When you download the patch, you’ll notice that the patch responds with fixed velocity. To add keyboard velocity as a modulator for volume, drag the blue circle to the VGA Level source. You can change the intensity of the effect by following the instructions in the call out.

These oscillators have a metalic sparkling sound at the high end of the keyboard. In lower octaves this sounds more choir-like. On Oscillator C I'm using wave morphing with a cloud filter which sounds a bit like a class "computer" sci-fi sound. In the performance section there is an X/Y pad to add Oscillator C into the mix. Performance control 3 is assigned to Osc 3's Cloud filter and modulates grain randomness.
