RIDGID 18V Cordless Tools - FIRST IMPRESSIONS!!

Buying a cordless tool system is an investment, and I would be lying if I said that there is one tool brand that is perfect for anyone - there isn’t. However, I can confidently say that Ridgid is the right brand for a lot of people. Is it the right brand for you? Read on to find out…

First off, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be partnering with Ridgid over the next year to put their tools to the test, and provide my honest feedback not only to all of you, but to Ridgid. Part of this gig is that I get to make suggestions about how their already-stellar line of tools can improve -- how cool is that?!

I’ve owned a number of Ridgid tools for several years now, including two of my favorites - their 18V cordless router, and 18v cordless brad nailer. They have held up to some pretty heavy duty use over the years, so I was excited when Home Depot and Ridgid approached me about working together and putting Ridgid’s full line of tools to the test as I renovate an abandoned building and turn it into my dream home and workshop. With that out of the way, let’s get back to the question of whether Ridgid’s tools are right for you, as an individual reading this article. If you are a person who uses tools infrequently, once or twice a month when the odd repair or picture-hanging chore pops up, then there are probably cheaper tool brands that will do the job just fine. At the other end of the spectrum, if you always want the flashiest tool with every bell and whistle, there are more expensive tool brands that offer more bells and whistles. But, if you want a great combination of durable high-performance tools that won’t break the bank, then Ridgid is a great fit for you.

Smaller than other brands 12v tools so they fit in tight spaces, but still provide you with 18v power. What’s not to love?!

I Made a Guitar from LEGOs & Epoxy Resin - aka the "LEGOcaster"

I made a guitar out of LEGOs and epoxy resin, aka – the Legocaster!! I’m so excited to share this Lego epoxy guitar build. I had no idea how the Legos would hold together with the epoxy resin, but in the end, I think the guitar came out pretty sharp looking.

The most challenging part of this guitar build was creating a solid guitar blank from the Legos and epoxy. I put the Lego pattern on a backplate, and put the Legos face down into a partially cured layer of epoxy, then poured more epoxy to halfway cover the Legos.

After this epoxy cured, I could remove the backplate that was holding the Legos together, pour more epoxy resin over them to fill in the backs of the Legos. While the epoxy was still fluid, I added a second layer of Legos, and finally came back to fill in the entire form with resin. After I had the epoxy Lego guitar blank, I could just use standard woodworking processes for guitar building, to shape the guitar from the epoxy Lego blank.

I also added some custom Lego touches with a truss rod cover made from Lego base plate, and replacing the knobs on the guitar tuners with Legos.

Building a 1980s Steve Vai JEM Guitar from Scratch

I built and hydrodipped a DIY guitar body, which is modeled after a 1980s Ibanez JEM from Steve Vai’s Passion and Warfare cover. The process of hydro-dipping a guitar is also known as a swirl dip, swirl paint, or swirling. I used basic woodworking skills to build the guitar body, and the swirl paint finish is inspired by Steve Vai’s Ibanez JEM guitar. I’ve seen a lot of videos about how to swirl dip or hydrodip a guitar, but I’ve never seen anyone use woodworking skills to build the guitar body from scratch before swirl-dipping it, so I decided to try it. I also couldn’t find any videos showing how to make the Steve Vai Ibanez JEM body shape by hand, so I hope people find that interesting too. :)

For the woodworking aspect, I used my X-Carve CNC to make the templates for the guitar body. I then used a router to cut the neck pocket, pickup cutouts, and cutout for the Floyd Rose tremelo. I then used hand tools to carve the two signature features of Steve Vai's JEM guitar - the monkey grip handle and lion's claw tremolo cutaway. For the hydro-dip, I went with Magic Marble paints -- they make swirl dipping easier than any other type of paint I tried (including Humbrol, 1Shot, and Rustoleum). I then used Spraymax 2k clear coat to give the guitar a glossy finish.

How to Make a DIY Steam Bent Wooden LED Chandelier / Pendant Light - #rocklerbentwoodchallenge

This time I’m showing to make a DIY wooden LED chandelier or pendant lamp using Rockler’s steam bending kit. This LED chandelier / hanging pendant light is part of the Rockler Bent Wood Challenge. It took many attempts to steam bend the wood for the LED pendant – I tried maple and oak, but in the end the LED chandelier turned out pretty cool. I’m just using LED strips with an acrylic diffuser to diffuse the light from the LEDs. This LED chandelier or pendant light is a challenging but rewarding DIY woodworking project, which anyone can make with a bit of can-do-it-ness.

Making the "Wing" Table from White Concrete & Walnut

This time I’m making a DIY modern concrete coffee table using white GFRC concrete mix and walnut lumber. This project involves intermediate concrete and woodworking skills, but I think with some patience, anyone can create this modern concrete coffee table. It would also be cool to see someone scale this design to dining table size. The table has an aggressive wing-shape that I’m really happy with.

Oh, it was also featured on the cover of the August 2019 issue of Popular Woodworking :)

If you haven’t worked with GFRC before, it might seem a bit intimidating; but it isn’t. It really isn’t a whole lot more difficult to work with than standard concrete, and the results that GFRC produces are amazing. The woodworking skills involved are more intermediate, basically because you have to use a vertical cutting jig on the table saw to make the aggressively angled walnut base for the coffee table.

Making a Concrete Bench with MELTED CRAYON(!!) Inlay

This time I’m making a bench (or table) from white concrete, melted crayons, epoxy resin, and plywood. Building this epoxy crayon concrete bench was a crazy project, but a ton of fun. We used all kinds of techniques - woodworking, concrete, CNC digital fabrication, pouring epoxy resin, and more, so grab some popcorn…this one was fun! Hopefully it inspires some of you to get out there and use crayons and concrete to make a bench, table, or even something else!

For the concrete mix, I used glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) mix so the bench could be poured thin. We made a drip-shaped foam knockout for the concrete form using the X-Carve. This left the drip shape in the concrete. We could then pour a 2:1 epoxy resin layer in the drip inlay, before melting crayons on top of the epoxy. For the last step, we poured another layer of thick set epoxy resin (a deep pour epoxy) on top of the melted crayons. Lastly, we used the Shaper Origin handheld CNC to cut the legs out of plywood.

Making a Concrete & Epoxy "Arctic Erosion" Coffee Table

This episode shows how to make a modern coffee table from epoxy resin and white concrete. I’m calling it the “Arctic Erosion” coffee table. I used thick set epoxy resin with blue epoxy pigment, and a white GFRC concrete mix with white concrete pigment, to make this modern coffee table. Some have pointed out the concrete & epoxy coffee table somewhat resembles a Minecraft lake, although any resemblance is unintentional :)

I’m really happy how this table came out – the epoxy and white concrete both shine, and the design is probably my favorite thing I’ve made to date.

I think it is important when sharing designs, to give credit to other designers who inspired you. The design of this concrete and epoxy table was heavily inspired by Brandon Gore’s concrete erosion sink, and the art work of Ben Young. Since I don’t sell my work, Brandon would likely be the person to contact if you would like to buy a custom table that is similar to this. How to Make Simple DIY Geometric Succulent Planters

This time I show how to make modern DIY geometric succulent planters using simple woodworking skills. This is unlike many of my other DIY projects, because I’m re-creating a planter design made by someone else, rather than making my own design. I bought a set of similar planters on Etsy (from Revolution Design House, link below) about 5 years ago. Since they no longer sell these, and I have got a lot of requests from subscribers to show how to make these, I figured it was time to reverse engineer these and make some new ones for a build video.

These modern DIY succulent planters are a fairly easy woodworking project that you can make in a single day. These geometric planters are also something you could batch out to sell at a craft fair. Each set of planters is made from a single 3x3 wood turning block (make sure to get one at least 12”-14” long). The planter liners are inexpensive steel condiment / sauce cups you can get on Amazon (link below). Alternatively, you can 3D print planter liners if you have a 3D printer (email me for the .STL file).

The design of the geometric planters focuses on the continuous grain through all three planters, which is the result of cutting all the planters from a single piece of wood (I used maple and walnut). I painted the ends with spray paint, which really highlights the faceted geometric shapes of the planters.

How to make a Modern Concrete Planter Box || Easy DIY Outdoor Project

In this episode, I’m collaborating with Hikoki / Metabo HPT on a limited tools project — a modern outdoor concrete planter box. Back to the planter box, this is a great outdoor project that can add a touch of color and plants or flowers to any deck, yard, or other outdoor setting. I designed this outdoor DIY planter so it can be made with only a circular saw, drill, and sander (and of course the usual small things that are needed for mixing concrete and assembling a melamine form). A miter saw is nice, but not required.

The planter is poured into a melamine form, which has an inner and outer form. To achieve the colors and thin walls of this planter, I used a GFRC concrete mix. I also used PVC trim to create channels wrapping around 3 sides of the planter After pouring the concrete for the body of the planter, I came back and used red, orange, and yellow pigment in the GFRC mix to fill the channels with a gradient of pigmented concrete.

This video shows how to make a wireless DIY rainbow epoxy resin LED lamp that transforms between a sconce, table lamp, and task light.

This is a simple DIY woodworking and epoxy resin project. I used a layer of white epoxy resin covered by a layer of clear epoxy resin to diffuse the LED strips. The lamp is made of three pieces that connect with a clever system of magnets and steel washers, that allow you to transform the lamp from a vertical sconce, to a horizontal scone, to a desk lamp or table lamp, to a task light. And since the lamp is battery-powered and rechargeable, it is easy to use in many situations. (The batteries last about 3 hours under normal use.) To top it off, the LED controller I used has a Bluetooth app, that allows the LEDs to be controlled via a Bluetooth connection to your phone.

The lamp base and light bar are made from hardwood maple, and involve fairly simple woodworking skills. The support block was 3D modeled in Fusion 360 and 3D printed using my Anycubic 3D printer.

The LED strips I used were SK6812 RGBWW LEDs. These LED strips are individually controllable neopixels that have RGB LEDs and separate warm white LEDs, so the lamp can do colorful displays and operate in a music syncing mode, or serve as a more refined and sophisticated warm white light source.

Making a Floating Shelf with "Wave" shape using Fusion 360 and CNC (or with standard Woodworking tools)

This video shows how to make modern DIY floating shelves using easy woodworking or a CNC. This floating shelf was made from three 2'x4' plywood sheets. I'm going to be using these DIY modern shelves as small parts storage in my workshop. This is about as close to making a shop project as you'll see :)

The video shows not only how to make a modern floating wave shelf, but also how to use parametric design in Fusion 360 to create all kinds of cool parametric furniture and designs. Specifically, I used the Slicer plug-in for Fusion 360,allows you to take 3D models and slice them into 2D shapes that snap together. The software also will automatically create 2D templates of the pieces, so that you can cut them out with a jigsaw or bandsaw, making this a simple woodworking project. Or you can cut it out of the 1/2" plywood on your X-Carve CNC using the Easel project I created (link below).

Making a Battery-Powered Epoxy LED Cube Lamp w/ Wireless Charging

In this video, I show how to make a DIY wireless-charging battery-powered epoxy resin LED cube lamp. Since this DIY LED cube light is battery powered and wirelessly charged it is totally portable and has a ton of uses -- a mood light, a party light, a night light, etc. The video also shows how to make the custom wireless charging pad for the epoxy LED cube, which an easy woodworking project. This LED cube light is battery-powered by a LiPO.

I used Total Boat 2:1 epoxy resin to make the cube, doing small 1/2" epoxy pours to build up the epoxy in the melamine form. All the electronics are off the shelf parts from Amazon, including the music reactive sp106e LED controller.

This is a fairly simple DIY woodworking and concrete project with a modern look. To make this modern LED light I cut a channel in a 2x4, and put a PEX tube in it, then poured epoxy over the tube. This created a hollow channel where I could insert an LED strip. The tube and epoxy act as a diffuser for the LED lighting.

In this renovation video, I show how to make a DIY modern platform bed with surround cabinets, LED lighting, and a live edge slab headboard. The platform bed and cabinets are made from 10 sheets of maple plywood, and I added a live edge slab headboard. I used LED strips and acrylic diffusers to create overhead reading lights that are controlled by touch panel on the side of the bed. This modern platform bed turned out to be a huge project, but the woodworking techniques used are all fairly basic. This is my dream bed setup, and I hope you all can learn a few things from the process and mistakes I had to work through along the way.

Making a BLUE CONCRETE & Plywood Bench || DIY Tutorial

This video shows how to make a modern DIY bench with blue concrete legs and a plywood top. This is a fairly simple concrete and woodworking project, and you could easily change the dimensions to make a modern coffee table, side table, or even a dining table the same way. The form for the concrete legs is made from melamine and I used ½” plywood for the bench top. For an extra decorative touch, I also cut strips of curly maple for the outer layers of the stacked plywood top.

As usual, I used a glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) mix for the concrete. GFRC is incredibly strong without any additional reinforcement, beyond the alkali resistant glass fibers. Thus, it was the perfect material to use for this style of bench legs.

How to Make "Marble" Slabs from Concrete -- DIY Tutorial with GFRC

n this video, I explain in detail on how to create a DIY faux marble top from concrete. The video also explains how to mix GFRC concrete, than I've provided in past videos. (GFRC = glass fiber reinforced concrete.) The first half is intended to be more of a tutorial than my past videos. You can use the concrete marbling technique shown to make coffee tables, dining tables, "marble" concrete countertops, and so on.

However, in this video I also wanted to show a smaller project you can make with concrete. The second half of this video shows how I made two DIY 'marble' serving trays. The serving trays use the marble concrete slabs as tops, and simple wooden frames with handles cut out of them. The frames can be made a number of ways using simple woodworking techniques.

Making an Impossibly Thin Curved Concrete Bench -- Find out How!

This time, I show how to make a DIY curved concrete bench (or coffee table). Since we were using GFRC concrete, we made the bench insanely thin – we definitely pushed limits on this project. Stay tuned to the end of the video to see if it holds the weight of two adults! This project was a collaboration with Chris Salomone from Four Eyes Furniture, and we also made a Lego Concrete River Table, in addition to this bench / coffee table.

We made the sides of the form for the bench from melamine, and the base from bendy ply and vinyl siding. The bendy ply was supported from below by cross brace pieces cut from scrap plywood and melamine. The form making techniques shown in the video could be adapted for many types of tables, benches, or other types of DIY concrete furniture.

The grey concrete color was achieved by using Fishstone's naturally white glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) concrete mix, and adding a powdered charcoal concrete pigment to the mix.

"Soundwave" Ikea Hack - Nordli Dresser & Media Center || How to make your own doors for an Ikea cabinet

This Ikea hack video shows to make your own drawer fronts for the Ikea Nordli dresser. The Nordli dresser is very low-profile, and also makes a great media center – I’m actually going to be using my Nordli hack as a combination dresser / media center in my bedroom. This is a DIY woodworking project that can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be, and use everything from high-tech CNC machines to hand tools. The only limit is your imagination.

The soundwave pattern across the front of my dresser was created using Easel software, and cut out on Inventables’ X-Carve CNC machine at a local maker space. I made the drawer fronts out of curly maple lumber. Because the lumber was warped, I had to make a planer jig to flatten them, and then use my table saw to square of the boards for a glue up. I used dowels for the glue-up, and it made things go smoothly. For the dowel joinery, I used a vintage Stanley no. 59 doweling jig. I highly recommend this jig, if you can get your hands on one.
